FUNK FOUNDATIONS #51 / James MTUME It has been 3 years since we lost one of the most influential percussionist Philadelphia born James Forman aka James Mtume. Raised in a musical family where his father (Jimmy Heath) and uncles formed The Heath Brothers. In the 60's, James studied percussion and he started playing with Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and eventually became the percussionist for Miles Davis. In the Miles Davis band, he hooked up Reggie Lucas (guitar), and started a song writing partnership. The duo Lucas/Mtume wrote and produced mane tracks for artists. He also started his own project, Mtume, where he applied his most innovative sounds. I pay tribute to his boogie funk period with his band and production work which is deep in my funk foundation form E80's….Enjoy the show! George C

Many people know Philadelphia for the Declaration of Independence, Rocky, and cheesesteaks. Philly's deep musical history is less familiar, but its influence continues to inspire audiences and artists across the globe. For Carol Muller's graduate-level ethnomusicology field methods class, students focused on documenting the city's Black music history, interviewing figures ranging from Grammy-award winning hip-hop producer Jahlil Beats to Marc Cressman and Anthony Tidd of the Ars Nova Worskhop to radio icon Dyana Williams. The class also produced a podcast based on the book There's that Beat Guide to The Philly Sound by Dave Moore. Each student created an episode based on a chapter of the book, including music samples to make the material more accessible to all audiences. The class was part of the Paideia program at Penn, which is focused on educating the whole student. Paideia funded some of the guests, and other research interviews were supported by a Klein Family Social Justice Grant. Muller, a professor of music, has been teaching the field methods class since 2001. Supported by the Penn Global program, she recently has spent time in Australia working with aboriginal leaders— an experience that she says has helped her re-think the focus of her field methods class. The course now centers around deep listening and working to understand the relationships between humans, non-human animals, and the environment. “To fully grasp human sound production, we need to expand how we see, hear, and know the world,” she wrote in the course description. Hear from Muller and graduate students Kwame Ocran and Yuri Seung about the experience, and listen to some of the material they created, in this episode of the Omnia podcast.***Produced, Narrated, and Edited by Alex ScheinPodcast Logo by Hemani KapoorMusic excerpts by the O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Meek Mill (Pr.  Jahlil Beats), Chris Brown and Tyra (Pr. Episode 73 sees me pull my regular trick of starting with mid-tempo groovers, slowing things right down, then picking the pace back up for some party grooves in the second half. No surprise that I kept things eclectic, with some 80s chug, soulful house, Brazilian & African-inspired grooves, smoky soul, hip hop and house… then ending with a little tribute to James Mtume who sadly passed away last week. My guest in hour 2 needs no introduction, but I'll do one anyway. I'm incredibly excited to bring you a mix from London-based DJ and producer Adriel Leff, AKA Jet Boot Jack. Sonically Lazy 7/7 by Mtume I always looked at sampling like somebody making a quilt. The quilt is made up of many other blankets. You have to learn how to make your own blanket. I don’t down hip hop. I think it was a very creative thing, because for the young black kids, music was taken out of the schools. When was the last time anybody’s seen a music store in a black neighborhood? Maybe thirty years ago. You go to Harlem, and there are no music stores. It was the genius of desperation that brought about sampling. It also kept the DNA of Funk and RnB alive for kids who never really heard it. It’s gotten to the point now where a lot of the cats are playing with a band, and I find that terribly interesting. We have to go back to the period when hip hop was starting. There was a great social divide in the black community between the older blacks and younger blacks, especially black men. Many in my generation denigrated hip hop and rap. But each generation brings its own music. That divide gave a lot of anger to the hip hop artists, who felt they weren’t getting respect. If you have no youth and all old people, your glass is half empty. All youth with no age, your glass is half full. We have become sonically lazy. The only cat who ever broke out of the box was Sun Ra. The rest of us, I don’t care what avenue we take, we’re still in that box. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

My first experience with "The Motherland" was playing with the Umoja (Unity) Ensemble. We were scheduled to play in "The Rumble In The Jungle." We were scheduled to be on that show. Miles booked some gigs in Europe so I couldn't do it. The next time I visit Africa we're going over there for the 50th Anniversary of their revolution in Ghana. I stayed a bit in Ghana, the next year I was made a Chief. I've been going back and forth for the last fifty years. I was enstooled as a chief, a friend of mine took me to see the primary Chief. We started hanging out and I visited the Palace. We got tight and he said, "I'd like to enstool you as a chief." My official name in Ghana is "Nana Mensah." I never played for him. The first thing we got tight in was that my wife and aunt donated a bunch of computers for a school in one of the villages. That was just vibrations and a whole new world for those kids. He wanted me to be one of his personal advisors. They slit a goat in front of me, cooked it, ate it. I've never mentioned that in any interview in my life. You went never never land on me." African Folklore is still healthy but you see that change is coming. My son and I were just in Cuba in May. We were standing in the middle of Revolution Square and I sent my whole family two months later. My wife, my kids and my grandkids. I said, "I want y'all to check this out now before McDonalds gets there. It no longer will be a picture of change, it will be Ronald McDonald on the front cover. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Happiness Injection with Shonette Bason

Shonette is a big fan of the phrase "don't let people (or silly things) steal your happiness". She was reminded of this last week at an event she was speaking at. One of the attendees was crying during the happiness workshop and it turned out to be down to something somebody had said to her previously but she'd been going over and over and over it in her head. Now Shonette admits she is one of the worst offenders for "doing her own head in" because of others or situations she's got not much control over.So how can you learn from Shonette to stop doing your own head in and being your own worst lemon sucker?Well Shonette turns to another phrase in these moments "it is what it is" and in this episode of Happiness Injection she'll explain how this works and you'll hear her bonus icing on the cake mantra to use in partnership with "it is what it is".A note from Charlotte the podcast women - in answer to Shonette's question - No. Not really, but we can use the example in this episode under a couple of legal defences. Don't forget to check out Shonette's website If you want to hit her up on insta it's @basonshonetteTwitter is @ShonetteBasonand here is the all important music credit - Music used under creative commons license. This week, our guest curator, Matt Fleeger got us thinking about the tensions between jazz's glorious history and its relentless drive toward the great new sounds.Tension is good, in a creative sense, right? But you can't help but notice how these dyad has driven some of the most ferocious conversations about the nature of jazz, and the rightful path for the American art form.Witness the fury over Stanley Crouch and James Mtume's epic head-to-head about Miles Davis' electric period, provided here (with added commentary from the always-excellent Ta-Nehisi Coates). Crouch basically suggests Davis was pressured by label execs to go for a broader audience. Mtume insists the decision to plug in was an artistic one, born of "technical exhaustion". It's a sample of a debate that consumes both fans and musicians. With Matt's help, we lined up three musicians who share very different views on the subject.

THE SCIENCE OF MUSIC, IMPACT AND EMOTION. With Co-Host: Michelle 4X and Harold Muhammad Special Guest: Philadelphia born percussionist James Mtume has done something unique in the music business: he has had a successful career while preserving his integrity. A successful session man, songwriter, bandleader, and producer, Mtume bowed out of the music business in the mid-'80s, when he felt the quality and history of R&B was slipping away, only to return triumphantly to lend his stellar ear and deep knowledge of black music to neo-R&B acts like Mary J. Blige. Mtume, the son of jazz saxophonist Jimmy Heath, first made in-roads into the music business in the early '70s when he moved from the city of brotherly love to New York. There he met and played with greats such as Freddie Hubbard and Sonnie Rollins, before being asked to join Miles Davis' touring group as a percussionist. Mtume spent five years with Miles and leveraged the prestigious position to become a session man, playing on Lonnie Liston Smith's Astral Traveling and Roberta Flack's Blue Lights In the Basement, among others.
