Originally released on May 7, 2021, this episode was an absolute rollercoaster! Between scheduling struggles, technical mishaps, and some hilarious behind-the-scenes chaos, this one took a little extra effort to bring to life. But in the end, it turned out to be an absolute blast!
In this episode, (the 89th!) I share some great news and also invite you to get to know artist, rapper, DJ and expert manifestor, Prince Hakim. It's an encore presentation of my interview with Hakim, who is an internationally known performer and whose family is no stranger to musical success (he's the son of Robert “Kool” Bell of Kool & The Gang). Hakim and I chatted about just about everything during this episode - from his friendship with music mogul Jermaine Dupri, to touring with the legendary Kool & The Gang, and opening for Van Halen and other music greats. And of course, we dove deeper into Hakim's thoughts on spirituality, meditation, and the power of manifesting with regard to his life and career. Hakim also spoke about the “Kool Kids Foundation,” which was founded by his father, Robert “Kool” Bell and his late mother, Sakinah Bell. The Foundation supports arts and music programs in schools. Since this episode originally aired, Hakim's career has only continued to skyrocket, and Kool & the Gang have gone on be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame - an honor that is both well-deserved and long overdue. As a bonus, at the end of the interview, you can listen to Hakim's song, “So Impressive,” featuring Walt Anderson. (You'll be walking around singing for the rest of the day!) ** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** It's the world premiere episode of Where'd You Get Your Funk From! Featured in WYGYFF Episode 1: Legendary bassist and leader of one of the most successful funk, R&B and pop bands of all time – Robert "Kool" Bell of Kool & the Gang! He is the last original surviving member of a band that was founded 55 years ago – notching 25 Top 10 R&B hits, 31 gold & platinum-selling albums and 7 Grammy Awards along the way – and recorded classics like “Jungle Boogie,” “Hollywood Swinging,” “Funky Stuff,” “Summer Madness,” “Spirit of the Boogie,” “Open Sesame,” “Ladies Night,” “Celebration,” “Too Hot,” “Get Down on It” and dozens more. This year, Kool and the Gang is FINALLY being inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. RECORDED SEPTEMBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. For over fifty years, Kool & the Gang have been essential innovators of funk, soul, disco, and R&B, creating rock & roll's most danceable anthems. They are one of the grooviest and most sampled bands of all time, with a recognizable sound that resonates across generations and has brought joy to millions of fans around the globe.Kool & the Gang took their funky groove all the way to the top with a mix of pop songwriting, fantastic vocals, and a killer horn section. Formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964, brothers Robert "Kool" and Ronald Bell got their start in clubs, mastering a repertoire of jazz standards and Motown covers. In 1969, they signed to newly formed De-Lite Records and released the up-tempo instrumental "Kool & the Gang." They subsequently released two live albums showcasing their ability to produce brilliantly crafted songs and blistering jams over an infectious beat. Their big break came in 1973 with the album Wild and Peaceful, which leaned deep into funky grooves, horn arrangements, and chanted vocals on the songs "Funky Stuff," "Jungle Boogie," and "Hollywood Swinging" - three instant dance floor classics. They slid easily into the growing disco scene, with their "Open Sesame" featured on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. In the 1980s, Kool & the Gang added lead vocalist James "J.T." Taylor and released two massive hits, the bumping "Ladies Night" and the smooth "Too Hot." With this, they accomplished something rare in the music industry - maintaining the fans who loved their funky roots, while reaching an entirely new audience tuned into their growing pop sensibilities. In 1980, they blew the roof off with the international hit "Celebration" and produced nineteen charting singles during the decade. Kool & the Gang's impact cannot be understated - from the throwback grooves of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars to the inclusion of the group's songs in almost every party playlist. Countless samples of their music laid the foundation for some of hip-hop's biggest hits by artists including Eric B. & Rakim, Tupac, Lil' Kim, and JAY-Z. We made it through the 60s, the 70s and the 80s with great hit songs. Then we asked ourselves "What are we going to do now?" We decided then to tour around the world and go into markets that we usually wouldn't travel to. 15:00 About 10 years ago, while we were touring in France, our promoter mentioned he was working on a champagne inspired by Barry White and and one for the Bee Gees and asked me if I was interested. I first said no, because I wasn't sure if our fans would buy a bottle of champagne at our concerts. What I wanted to do was to be on the shelves, together with Dom Perignon, Cristal, Veuve Cliquot, etc. 22:30 The inspiration behind the song "Ladies Night" came from watching people walk in New York. The sound of their steps inspired its famous baseline and I came up with the concept and title by going out to clubs in those times.

Kool & the Gang have made some of the biggest hits of all time. We're talking about some of the greatest party songs ever: "Get Down On It," "Celebration," "Ladies Night." But, we're also talking about a lot more than just dance floor fillers. Kool & the Gang hit the music scene in the mid-60s and took off running. By the time they started recording in 1968, they were one of the baddest bands in the country. Now, it's been a half-century since Kool & the Gang started making music, and they're still at it. They have a new album dropping on July 14th called People Just Wanna Have Fun. On Bullseye, Robert "Kool" Bell stops by to chat about the new album and his long career with Kool & the Gang. Plus, the stories behind the group's hit songs and what motivates them to keep recording after more than 50 years.

In episode 78 I talk to Jay "J-Zone" Mumford about Kool and The Gang, an American R&B/soul/funk band formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964 by brothers Robert "Kool" Bell and Ronald Bell, with Dennis "Dee Tee" Thomas, Robert "Spike" Mickens, Charles Smith, George Brown, and Ricky West. They have undergone numerous changes in personnel and have explored many musical styles throughout their history, including jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, funk, disco, rock, and pop music. Their most successful albums of this period include Ladies' Night (1979), Celebrate! (1980), and Emergency (1984), their highest selling album with two million copies sold in the US.

Grammy® Honoree, Hollywood Walk of FameLet's Celebrate a Golden Anniversary of Kool & The Gang! Founding Member Brother Ronald Nathan Bell (November 1, 1951 – September 9, 2020), Robert's NEW Brand is. La Kool. lKool had always envisioned having his own brand out of Europe. For many years, he sought out Grand Cru Vineyards from owners that have been selling for generations and decided to work with Paul Berthelot, a Multi-Vintage Grand Cru Producer since 1884.A couple years ago marked the official launch of Le Kool Champagne, and Kool also recently added a new rosé champagne to keep the summer season going through the winter. Kool & the Gang, officially launched in 1969, after performing for five years under various band titles, has influenced the music of three generations and the band has become true recording industry legends. Thanks to iconic songs like Celebration, Cherish, Jungle Boogie, Summer Madness and Open Sesame, they've earned two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, nine Top Ten Pop hits and 31 gold and platinum albums. From Nairobi to Newark, Kool & the Gang has performed continuously longer than any R&B group in history and their bulletproof funk and jazzy arrangements have also made them the most sampled R&B band of all time. A reviewer recently called their performance “a 24-karat show” and every year, even after a half-century on the road, yields a non-stop schedule of shows across the globe. The heavily-in-demand band has continued to tour the world, appearing most recently alongside Kid Rock, Dave Matthews Band, Elton John and The Roots and performing on a recent, 50-city tour with rock legends Van Halen. In 1964, Ronald Bell and his brother, Robert “Kool” Bell, joined Jersey City neighborhood friends Robert “Spike” Mickens, Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, Ricky Westfield, George Brown, and Charles Smith to create a unique musical blend of jazz, soul and funk. At first calling themselves the Jazziacs, the band went through various names – The New Dimensions, The Soul Town Band, Kool & the Flames – before settling on their famous moniker. Over the next several years they solidified their musical chemistry on the rough-and-tumble East Coast music scene supporting acts like Bill Cosby, Ritchie Havens and Richard Pryor. Their self-titled 1969 debut album introduced their signature instrumental sound and fierce horn arrangements and spawned their first Billboard R&B charted single, Kool & the Gang. In 1969, Kool & the Gang released their self-titled debut album/ It was the introduction to a theme, music is the message, that Kool & the Gang stands by today. The instrumental album was an expression of their deep love of music. It was also an introduction to their signature sound and the fierce horn arrangements created by Khalis, Dee Tee, and Spike. Their debut album spawned their first Billboard R&B charted single Kool & the Gang and later Let the Music Take Your Mind. In 1970, their audacious sophomore set Live at the Sex Machine peaked at #6 on Billboard's R&B chart and yielded three hit singles: Funky Man, Who's Gonna Take the Weight, and I Want to Take You Higher. Next came The Best Of Kool & the Gang Featuring The Penguin, Kool & the Gang Live at PJ'S, Music Is The Message, and Good Times, all of which helped solidify a sound that wowed not only fans but such contemporaries as James Brown and Nina Simone. The band's stellar reputation grew with each album, but 1973's gold disc Wild & Peaceful took Kool & the Gang to another level (#6 R&B, #33 Pop), spurred by the immortal party anthems Funky Stuff, Hollywood Swinging and the platinum smash Jungle Boogie. Hits like Higher Plane (#1 R&B), the classic Summer Madness (featured on the Grammy-winning movie soundtrack Rocky) and LPs Spirit of the Boogie, Love & Understanding and Open Sesame followed. The latter's title track was featured on the top-selling movie soundtrack of all time, Saturday Night Fever, earning the group their second Grammy. In 1979, Kool & the Gang unveiled a smooth new sound with Ladies Night. Produced by the legendary Pop/Jazz musician Eumir Deodato, it became their first platinum album. The #1 R&B title track reached #8 at Pop. It was followed by Too Hot (#3 R&B, #5 Pop). The 80's would see them dominate the mainstream, starting with the double platinum-selling album Celebrate (driven by the international monster hit Celebration, which spent six weeks atop the R&B chart and became a #1 Pop single). Celebration, which played as the American hostages returned from Iran, remains de rigueur at joyous occasions worldwide. The smashes Get Down On It, Take My Heart, Let's Go Dancing, Joanna, Tonight, Misled, the #1 R&B, #2 Pop giant Cherish and the #1 R&B anthem Fresh (these last three from the multi- platinum LP Emergency) solidified the group's international stardom. Kool & the Gang landed global commercial endorsements, supported countless charitable causes and were the only American group to participate in Band Aid's 1984 Do They Know It's Christmas project for famine victims in Africa. With the explosion of hip-hop in the 90's, Kool & the Gang's incredible catalog of grooves made them DJ favorites. They were second only to R&B icon James Brown as sources of rap music samples. Today, the group enjoys global fame and recognition and a following that spans generations due in part to the groups widely sampled catalogue. Kool & the Gang's drum beats, bass, guitar and signature horn lines lace the tracks of numerous artists including the Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Cypress Hill, and P. Diddy. Kool & the Gang is the most sampled band in hip-hop by far. Their music is also featured on the soundtracks for Rocky, Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction, Wreck-It Ralph and countless others. In 2014, they were honored with a BET Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award and in October 2015, in the town they sing about in one of their earliest hits, “Hollywood Swinging,” Kool & the Gang was honored to take their place as American musical icons with a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2016, they released a single, "Sexy (Where'd You Get Yours),” which rose to #15 on the Billboard Adult R& B chart. The song signifies a modernization of Kool & the Gang's unmistakable sound, down to the dance floor-tailored bass grooves and the perfectly timed horns. It was their first airplay chart hit in a decade. © 2023 Building Abundant Success!!2023 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

BET Networks"Well, my name is FATi because I'm sweet, short, and petite. I was born in Liberia raised in the Ivory Coast but grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. As soon as I was born, I wasn't crying, I was singing (laughs) so pretty much all my life.FATi means love and faith, its perfect because I'm living in my faith. I'm living in my purpose now."Born in Liberia West Africa, FATi's family tree is deeply rooted in artistic expression. Her musical heritage includes jazz vocalist and songwriter, Senabella, The Bronzevilla Diva, a great-grandmother who was a celebrated jazz singer in the '40s, a grandmother who is a published author in Africa, and an uncle, Robert Kool Bell of Kool and the Gang.FATi's sound blends elements of R&B, hip-hop, reggae, and soul with cool savors of Afro-pop into infectious concoctions of superbly delicious music. Her music video for “Queen” surges with potent dynamics, while her previous hit video, “L.O.V.E. Love,” simmers with sultry soul and R&B flavors. From one angle, FATi's “QUEEN” is an audacious production: it fuses hip-hop and R&B with drums, brass, and lead guitar suggestive of Afropop, and matches it with a sparkling, warm-weather vibe suitable for any Tropical playlist. From another angle, it's all perfectly consistent. The track feels less like a balancing act and more like a homecoming. Afro-Pop recording sensation has recently released an Island vibe single, entitled “L.O.V.E. Love”, inspired by the sun, water and beauty of the beach in West Africa, and the universal joy of love. The song is a prelude to her next single, an anthemic song of inspiration called “Queen.” Both are releases from her new album, “Give Me More”, named because once you hear it you will desire more, and more and more.Chances are, a talent as audacious as FATi would find an audience anywhere on earth. Right now, she's tearing up the music scene in Kenya, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast, and she's established herself as an exciting new voice in one of the undisputed centers of musical culture in the world. She's absorbed and synthesized all of the traditions of Liberia and Abidjan – the local heritage, the colonial influences, the fascination with American pop – and she's making sounds that are wholly her own."I want to dedicate my single, “L.O.V.E” to Nipsey Hussle. I want to send love and light to those who were affected by his passing."© 2022 Building Abundant Success!!2022 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud
In this episode, I sat down with artist, rapper, and DJ, Prince Hakim, son of Robert “Kool” Bell of Kool & The Gang. We spoke about just about everything - from his friendship with music mogul Jermaine Dupri, to touring with the legendary Kool & The Gang, and opening for Van Halen and other music greats. #koolandthegang #celebration #funkdisco Bio: https://www.koolandthegang.com/history Kool & the Gang, officially launched in 1969, after performing for five years under various band titles, has influenced the music of three generations and, at the age of 49, the band has become true recording industry legends. Thanks to iconic songs like Celebration, Cherish, Jungle Boogie, Summer Madness and Open Sesame, they've earned two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, nine Top Ten Pop hits and 31 gold and platinum albums.
Sunflower Radio Promo (1970) The Beach Boys - Slip On Thru (Instrumental backing and backing vocals ) (1970) The Beach Boys - Forever (1970) The Beach Boys - Til I Die (vocals only) (1971) The Beach Boys - Add Some Music To Your Day (1970) The Beach Boys - Seasons In The Sun (1971) Originally titled "Le Moribund" ("The Dying Person"), it was a huge hit for Terry Jacks in 1973, who had previously been part of a husband-wife band called The Poppy Family. The Poppy Family had a sitar player in the band. Four people. One was a sitar player. ANYHOO, Jacks tried repeating his luck by recording another Brel song, "Ne Me Quitte Pas", as "If You Go Away", but as the French say, "La foudre ne frappe jamais deux fois." Wikipedia: The first version of the song was recorded by Jacques Brel, who also wrote it in a brothel in Tangiers. Sung in a marching tempo, it tells of a man dying of a broken heart and shows him saying his last farewells to his close friend Emile, a priest friend, an acquaintance named Antoine, and his wife who has cheated on him numerous times with Antoine. Despite knowing of Antoine being his wife's lover, he wishes no ill upon him but tells him to take care of his wife. The American poet Rod McKuen translated the lyrics to English. In 1964, the Kingston Trio first recorded an English version of "Seasons in the Sun", which was later heard by Terry Jacks and became the basis for his rendition. Jacks rewrote the lyrics, although he is uncredited for it. He justifies the rewriting by stating that he deemed the original version and its translations to be "too macabre". The inspiration for the rewritten lyrics was a close friend of his who was suffering from acute leukemia and died four months later. The Terry Jacks rendition, which was later dedicated to the friend, has the dying man giving his last words to his loved ones with whom he shared his life, much like the original. However, unlike the Jacques Brel version, the man does not die broken-hearted but instead, acknowledges the rights and wrongs of his actions in life as he passes away peacefully. In the rewritten version, the man first addresses his close friend, whom he had known since childhood, and reminisces the happy times they had such as playing and studying together ("climbed hills and trees", "learned of love and ABC's"), and friendships with others ("skinned our hearts and skinned our knees"). He then addresses his father, who tried to give him a good upbringing and exert a positive influence on his undisciplined life ("I was the black sheep of the family", "You tried to teach me right from wrong", "wonder how I got along") which included overindulgence, vices, and revelry ("too much wine and too much song"). The man finally addresses "Michelle", possibly his daughter or niece, and stating how she lifted his spirit up in times of despair. Before he dies in peace, the man reminds all three that he will always be alive in their hearts and will be present in spirit when they see people or visit places; pretty girls (old and new friends) for the close friend, young children playing for the father, and flower fields for Michelle. This version is actually produced for The Beach Boys BY Jacks. He produced this one song and they gave him the heave-ho. Maybe he said, "I'll produce, but there's this song I wrote called 'Put The Bone In' which you might like." The ticket back to Vancouver was on its way. Off-season, Bill and Lisa perform on cruise ships, including trips to the South Pacific and the Orient." Kool and the Gang - Raw Hamburger (1969) Formed by Robert "Kool" Bell, his brother Ronald Bell and a bunch of their New Jersey teenage friends in the mid-60s (then called the Jazziacs), Kool & the Gang played traditional jazz in regional venues for several years, slowly morphing their style to incorporate emerging funk sounds of Sly and the Family Stone and James Brown. They were signed by the De-Lite label in the early '70s and gathered a small but loyal national following (in particular for their 1971 release Live at the Sex Machine). The group's fortunes exploded in 1974 with Wild and Peaceful, an infectiously raw album that spawned three smash hits, "Funky Stuff," "Hollywood Swinging," and "Jungle Boogie," all featuring great instrumentation and lyrics virtually shouted by the group. However, as quickly as they rode to fame, Kool & the Gang faded, their rough sound appearing out of place against the slick, dance-oriented sounds that began to dominate popular radio in the late '70s. And then they broke up, never to be heard from again. Kool and the Gang - Country Junkie (1972) Looking Glass - Sweet Something (1973)

KOOL & THE GANG HISTORY LESSON WITH ROBERT 'KOOL' BELL Lara Avetoom interviews the legendary lead member of 'KOOL & THE GANG' Robert 'Kool' Bell.Formed as a jazz ensemble in the mid-'60s, Kool & the Gang became one of the most inspired and influential funk units during the '70s, and one of the most popular R&B groups of the '80s after their breakout hit "Celebration" in 1979. Just as funky as James Brown or Parliament (and sampled almost as frequently), Kool & the Gang relied on their jazz backgrounds and long friendship to form a tightly knit group with the interplay and improvisation of a jazz outfit, plus the energy and spark of a band with equal ties to soul, R&B, and funk. Robert "Kool" Bell and his brother Ronald (or Khalis Bayyan) grew up in Jersey City, NJ, and picked up the music bug from their father. A professional boxer, he was also a serious jazz lover and a close friend of Thelonious Monk. With Robert on bass and Ronald picking up an array of horns, the duo formed the Jazziacs in 1964 with several neighborhood friends: trombone player Clifford Adams, guitarists Charles Smith and Woody Sparrow, trumpeter Robert "Spike" Michens, alto saxophonist Dennis Thomas, keyboard player Ricky West, and drummer Funky George Brown (all of whom, except Michens and West, still remained in the group more than 30 years later).

Dr. Funkenstein, a.k.a, Star Child: Singer, songwriter, bandleader, and record producer. Born in Kannapolis, NC, he grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey. Clinton became interested in doo wop during the early ’50s. Basing his group on Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, Clinton formed The Parliaments in 1955, rehearsing in the back room of a Plainfield barbershop where he straightened hair. The Parliaments released only two singles during the next ten years, but frequent trips to Detroit during the mid-’60s – where Clinton began working as a songwriter and producer – eventually paid off their investment. The Parliaments finally had a hit with the 1967 single “(I Wanna) Testify”. But his label ran out of money and George refused to record any new material. When the label was bought out by Atlantic, Clinton decided to abandon the Parliaments name rather than record for the major label and record the same band under a new name: Funkadelic. (In 1970 he regained the rights to The Parliaments name) Inspired by Motown ‘s assembly line of sound, He gradually put together a collective of over 50 musicians and recorded during the ’70s both as Parliament and Funkadelic. While Funkadelic pursued band-format psychedelic rock, Parliament engaged in a funk free-for-all, blending influences from the godfathers (James Brown and Sly Stone) with freaky costumes and themes inspired by ’60s acid culture and science fiction. He is regarded, along with James Brown and Sly Stone, as one of the foremost innovators of funk music. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, alongside 15 other members of Parliament-Funkadelic. Key Artist Kool & the Gang, "Best Band Ever!?!?" Formed in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1964 by brothers Robert "Kool" Bell and Ronald Bell. They have explored many musical styles: jazz, soul, funk, rock, and pop music. After three albums, the band had commercial success with Wild and Peaceful (1973) which contained the US top ten singles "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging". They reached a commercial peak between 1979 and 1986 following their partnership with Brazilian musician Eumir Deodato and the addition of singer James "J.T." Taylor to the line-up. Their most successful albums of this period include Ladies' Night (1979), Celebrate! (1980), and Emergency (1984), and the hit singles "Ladies' Night", "Celebration", "Get Down on It", "Joanna", and "Cherish". The band continues to perform to this day. Open Comments: Question: What makes a track funky? Movie Scene - Royal Black Hollywood Strikes Back Both movies were deliberate attempts to counter the Blaxploitation movement. Claudine - "The Poverty Technician" (Plot) The film tells the story of Claudine Price (Diahann Carroll), a single Black Harlem mother, living on welfare with six children, who finds love with a garbage collector, Rupert Marshall (James Earl Jones), whom she calls "Roop". The pair's relationship becomes complicated because of several factors. Among these are that the couple do not want to marry because they would not be able to support the children without welfare, and that the kids themselves, particularly eldest son Charles (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs), are apprehensive of Rupert, and believe that he will leave their mother just like her previous husbands had. Claudine and Rupert meet while both are at work. Rupert asks Claudine out on a date with him and Claudine accepts. When Rupert becomes invited inside Claudine's apartment, the children are rude and vulgar towards Rupert. This is also the first time the audience meets the children and sees the inside of Claudine's slum-like apartment. Later, in the film, the audience finds out that Claudine receives financial aid from the government through the welfare program. Throughout the film, Miss Kabak, the social worker, visits Claudine at her home and asks her if she is employed and if she is dating anyone. Claudine always denies Miss Kabak the truth and lies to her about being unemployed and single. If Claudine tells the truth and says that she is employed, the amount of financial aid she receives from the welfare program would decrease or she could also no longer receive any more financial aid. If Claudine dates anyone and receives gifts from her boyfriend, the social worker must deduct any money or gifts Claudine is receiving from whomever she is dating. Just before he is to announce his engagement to Claudine to the kids, Rupert is served papers for a court order relating to underpayment of child support of his own children; his work wages are garnished to pay the difference. Rupert becomes so upset about this that he disappears for a couple of days and loses contact with everyone. He moves out of his apartment, does not show up to work, and does not show up to the Father's Day celebration the children had prepared for him. Charles eventually finds him drunk at a bar and angrily confronts him. Charles is angry at Rupert because he left his mother without any explanation. Out of the anger Charles felt for Rupert, he engages in a physical fight with him. After the incident at the bar, Rupert eventually shows up outside of Claudine's apartment and speaks to her. After some time, the couple talk things over and make up. After several hardships and debating over whether they should marry because of financial issues relating to welfare, the couple decide to marry. They hold a wedding ceremony, but it is interrupted when Charles runs inside the apartment in the middle of the ceremony while the police are chasing after him. The couple and the rest of the children run after Charles, leave the ceremony, and board the police wagon. The film ends on a cheery note with the entire family, along with Rupert, walking happily hand in hand through the neighborhood. Question: Should welfare be (a) reformed or (b) avoided? What would a or b look like? Conclusion: Regardless of the message, Gladys' music was on hit (3rd #1 R&B LP) and Diahann Carroll was great, she was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards in 1975. Uptown Saturday Night - "The Good Guys (Sidney & Bill) Get Over" (Plot) While enjoying themselves at Madame Zenobia's club on Saturday Night, Steve Jackson (Poitier) and Wardell Franklin (Cosby) are held up by robbers who raid the club, taking Steve's wallet as a result. Upon realizing that a winning lottery ticket worth $50,000 is in the wallet, they set out to find the crooks themselves. Determined to retrieve the ticket, they search for it using the help of gangster Geechie Dan Beauford (Belafonte), who wants to defeat his rival Silky Slim (Lockhart). Using their wit, perseverance, and fearlessness, Steve and Wardell devise a plan to get the ticket using the help of both gangsters, in the hopes that it will pay off for them. Question: Is this truly anti-Blaxploitation or just another version? Television Scene - A Tale of 2 Black Families That's My Mama, "Warm and Fuzzy" (1 season, 1974-75) (Plot) Set in a middle-class African American neighborhood in Washington, D.C., the program revolved around the character Clifton Curtis (played by Clifton Davis), a man in his mid-20s who worked as a barber at Oscar's Barber Shop, the family barber shop he had inherited from his late father. While Clifton enjoyed being a bachelor, his loving, but tart-tongued and opinionated mother Eloise "Mama" Curtis, played by Theresa Merritt, wanted him to settle down and find a nice wife. Additional characters – such as Clifton's two best friends—Earl, played by Teddy Wilson, an easy-going mailman and Junior, played by Ted Lange, a suave and good-humored ladies' man—came and went over the course of a typical day at Oscar's Barber Shop. Other characters included Tracy, Clifton's little sister, played by Lynne Moody and later by Joan Pringle and her husband, Leonard, played by Lisle Wilson, as well as local seniors Josh and Wildcat, played by DeForest Covan and Jester Hairston. Clifton Davis and Hairston would work together again years later in the hit sitcom, Amen. Conclusion: Never a ratings success. Good Times, "Classic" (6 seasons, 1974-1979) (Plot) Florida and James Evans live in a Chicago housing project and have three children: James Jr., also known as "J.J."; Thelma; and Michael, called "the militant midget" by his father due to his passionate activism. When the series begins, J.J. is seventeen years old, Thelma is sixteen, and Michael is eleven. Their exuberant neighbor, and Florida's best friend, is Willona Woods, a recent divorcée who works at a boutique. Their building superintendent is Nathan Bookman. The characters originated on the sitcom Maude. Episodes deal with the characters' attempts to overcome poverty. GT was intended to be a good show for Esther Rolle and John Amos. Both expected the show to deal with serious topics in a comedic way while providing positive characters. However, J.J. became the breakout character. As a result, the writers focused more on J.J.'s comedic antics instead of serious issues. Through seasons two and three, Rolle and Amos grew increasingly disillusioned with the direction of the show. Rolle was vocal about it: "He's 18 and he doesn't work. He can't read or write. He doesn't think. The show didn't start out to be that...Little by little—with the help of the artist, I suppose, because they couldn't do that to me—they have made J.J. more stupid and enlarged the role. Negative images have been slipped in on us through the character of the oldest child." Jimmie Walker was the only cast member to not show at Rolle's funeral. Amos also spoke out: "The writers would prefer to put a chicken hat on J.J. and have him prance around saying "DY-NO-MITE", and that way they could waste a few minutes and not have to write meaningful dialogue." Amos was ultimately fired after just 3 seasons. [Audio Clip] Open Comments: Question: Did/do you know anyone in real life like J.J.? Conclusion: They didn't recast James Evans, they just killed him off and Esther was playing a single mom after all. She quit after season 4. Vote, Biggest Impact for 1974:

Robert"KOOL"Bell stops bye to discuss is career and his humble beginnings from the Jersey City projects along with his brother Ronald Bell to form KOOL AND THE GANG
BIO DJ Soulswede "He has looked Robert "Kool" Bell (Kool & The Gang) straight in the eye! He dared to ask him why they have been faking the funk in recent years. He has sat in a car with Mitch McDowell from General Kane, discussing at length the problems of crack in the young Afro-American community. He also spoke with Mitch about his passion for p-funk. He has hooked up with old school hiphoppers The Jungle Brothers at a noisy airport. He’s even given Patti Austin a huge hug in Copenhagen. He has met Chicago housers Full House and Daryll Pandy during the period when four channel mixers were the only studio equipment needed for house music." Born in 1967 and raised in southern Sweden. At the age of 8, he asked his parents for the new George McCrae single “Rock You Baby". There was something special here with a soulful voice on top of a melodic soulful groove. He then began to explore his fathers' vinyl collection. The favorites came from Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder. In 1980 he bought his own first album, “Secret Combination? by Randy Crawford. His father is a musician and has been playing organs in churches almost all his life. Maybe there is a connection. In the mid 80’s he discovered local radio stations, which were a rather new phenomena back then. But he did not appreciate the music they were playing. One day he asked one of the stations if he could run a show playing soul music and "Soul Power Radio" was born. Later "Soul Food Radio". He was doing a one hour weekly show playing soul and funk music only. The response was not overwhelming. Soul music was not the most played genre back then. He was even threatened on one of his live shows and was actually haunted by people for playing black music on the radio. He had to leave the studio through a backdoor for a period of time. During that time he also did some freelance work for The Swedish National Radio. He interviewed Robert “Kool? Bell and Dennis “DT? Thomas of Kool & The Gang. He also did his “own? interviews with artists such as Tyrone Davis, BeBe & CeCe Winans and Mitch McDowell of General Kane. It was not always an easy thing to do interviews at a young age of around 20. But the artists respected him for his big knowledge and deep love for the music. In 1991 he moved abroad to work in Spain for a couple of years, following this time he moved to Stockholm for a period. He lost close contact with the music for a couple of years during the 90’s, and is now trying to catch up with the music missing on his soulful map for that decade. Over the years he has been playing everything from raw, naked and “uncensored? hiphop to quiet storm, smooth jazz, soulful house, deep soul, and hardcore funk. But his heart is in the deeper school of soulful music. It “must? contain a strong melody. He always comes back to the fact that soul music must reflect the person behind it. It’s all about credibility.
