The dust had hardly settled on Anheuser-Busch InBev's 2015 acquisition of Elysian Brewing Company when Budweiser's Super Bowl ad, “Brewed the Hard Way,” poured salt in the wound by punching down at the entire craft brewing industry on the biggest stage imaginable. Today on Taplines, we're joined by Elysian cofounder Dick Cantwell for a look back at that pivotal moment, when ABI did a little mask-off mudslinging at America's microbrewers even as it was actively buying into the segment. Wes Craven's New Nightmare – The Master Returns

Hops and Box Office Flops

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 2, 2020 79:36

Wes Craven's New Nightmare came only a decade after the original, yet somehow—in that short span—it missed the height of the character's popularity. Freddy Krueger, for a time, transcended the screen. Toys, a TV show, and halloween costumes flooded the marketplace. Yes, Freddy Krueger, the burned, sadistic child molester, was even on a children's bubble gum. So, quite unfortunately, by the time New Nightmare arrived, the franchise had declined both critically and commercially. The horror icon—like many other properties we've covered on the pod—had been squeezed of all his juice. Thus, New Nightmare was facing an uphill battle. After all, Freddy was literally dead. Hence the title of this movie's predecessor. And The Final Nightmare wasn't exactly the pinnacle of the franchise either. Rather, it was a continuation of the downward trend that began with The Dream Master (Part 4). All that said, New Nightmare did have one ace up its sleeve—Wes Craven. Freddy's creator—the writer and director of the original—returned for one final journey into the dream world. Who better to helm the true sendoff of the character? The answer, as one may guess, is no one. Craven built the nightmarish landscape that Freddy haunted. This intimacy allowed him a clear eye on the issues that had plagued the franchise since his departure. He knew he could not possibly do another sequel in the vein of those that came before. Instead, he gave us New Nightmare, a meta exploration of the terror the gloved man had perpetrated for so many years on the big screen. This film is an ode to Freddy, the actors who faced him, and the logical continuation of their onscreen personas battle against his unspeakable evil. And, it is quite brilliant. As mentioned, though, the quality of this film was lost in the disinterest of Freddy's former fans. New Nightmare is the lowest grossing entry in the franchise, earning a sub-par $19.8 million on a budget rumored to be anywhere from $8 to $13 million. Do not let that deter you. Unlike most horror sequels—those of this franchise included—New Nightmare truly brings something new to the table. Sure it treads on nostalgia, but it also provides closure for the character in a why that had never been done before. Most important, it made Freddy scary again. For too long, he'd been the wisecracking killer that audiences were meant to root for, instead of fear. Craven understood that the powerlessness one feel's in their dreams was never meant for goofy kills and one-liners. It was meant to paralyze us, make us think twice before turning out the lights at night. Sure, we can all enjoy the more approachable Freddy, but he was never the one who haunted any of our nightmares. So sit back, slash open a Nite Owl Pumpkin Ale from Elysian Brewing Company, and brew a fresh pot of coffee! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are assembling the Dream Warriors to take on Freddy one last time! This Week’s Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – In what may have served as a litmus test for Scream, Craven put a meta spin on his classic creation. (00:00) The "Skin the Cat" Elm Street Trivia Challenge – I challenge Chumpzilla and Capt. We live increasingly busy and complex lives and the same is true of our money. Repeatedly making smart money moves is hard. It’s easy for us to forget or just get plain lazy when it comes to doing the right thing with our funds. Between our different bank accounts, multiple credit cards, and debt obligations, it can be difficult for us to take action on a consistent basis that will have a long-lasting effect on our personal finances. That’s where automation comes in- it helps us to engineer money success ahead of time, instead of trusting ourselves in the moment to continually muster the willpower to make it happen. But like many of the financial tools at our disposal, it’s not all puppies and rainbows. So, in addition to the clear benefits, be sure to listen and learn why you should also be careful when it comes to employing automation in your personal finance life. In episode 125, Tony & Eddie sit down to talk about the fast paced, thrill packed, abundantly twist filled flick, Bad Times at the El Royale (2018). Are you a fan of a heist film? How about an action flick with powerful female characters? What about deeply character driven plot points? Or... did you like the TV show, LOST? If any of those answers are "yes", the boys think you might not want to miss out on this Drew Goddard film. They also sampled new brews from Levante Brewing Company and Elysian Brewing Company. If you're an avid listener, you know that Eddie loves Christmas, and of course he loves a good Christmas beer. Plum diddly, by Levante is a fruit and spice infused imerpial stout that really jingled his bells. Tony sipped on an American Pale Ale from Elysian called Salute the Sun. As technology evolves, we’re increasingly flooded with advertisements everywhere we turn and consequently, traditional marketing often misses the mark. How do you best engage your audience in 2019? Joe Bisacca, co-founder of Elysian Brewing Company, sat down with When Would You Want to Know to discuss the out-of-the-box branding tactics that helped his company earn Large Brewpub of the Year three times. Approach Marketing from a Psychological Point With a psychology and english background, Joe Bisacca naturally approached marketing from a customer perspective, “when you're creating a brand, you're creating something that has a 1-to-1 relationship with the customer. Wholesalers are not your customers, so when you're making a decision for a package, don't make it because the store wants it. That's disingenuous for the customers.” Understand Your Customer The goal is to engage a person at their point of interest, pull them in with a story or piece of information that just scratches the surface and make them want more. Joe uses the example of throwing a house party for some friends, “if you were having a party at your house and everybody had a great time, you're probably on to something… in throwing those parties, you're engaging with people, finding out what people like. You don't have to overthink it.” Be an All-Star at Failure “Brewing and marketing is like baseball” Joe describes, “if you suck 70% of the time, you're an all-star.” When brainstorming, start by throwing a bunch of things out there and then beat things up. Try to personify the brand. What do they look like? Are they a guy? Are they a girl? How old are they? Where do they like to hang out? What does their house party look like? The sky's the limit, “if you don't fail often enough, you're probably not pushing it far enough” Stop Talking, Observe, and Refine As Joe’s grandmother used to say, “God gave you two eyes, two ears and one mouth. You should use them in the proportion you’ve got them. Shut up, watch what's going on, listen to what's happening and then adjust from there.” Joe often loiters in the grocery stores aisles and observes customer interaction with his product. “Don't talk about it a lot. Just observe and observation is what led us to refine that brand and kind of get it to where it was. I think it's what we do with all of our stuff.” More From this Episode Joe answers some of the biggest questions about creating an authentic brand, testing your products, and working around human biases. In Episode 13, we have a full house as Derek, Rich, and George are joined again by Matt Dapkins of Massive Beer Reviews and a very special guest - Peculiar Culinary Company chef and owner Gene Philbin! We talk about our upcoming Peculiar Dinner with the Dead on Wednesday, Oct. 21, which pairs a scary menu of unknown items with beers selected specifically to celebrate the Halloween season during a screening of George A. Romero’s classic zombie film that started it all, “Night of the Living Dead.” We also discuss our love/hate relationship with “The Walking Dead” and nothing but animosity for the spin-off, “Fear the Walking Dead,” making movies into video games, cooking with beer, restaurants and breweries, and much more! Those who make it to the end of the episode earn special rewards, especially if you join us on Oct. 21 at Peculiar Culinary Company (30 Center St., Hughestown)! The beers sampled in this week’s episode are Dawn of the Red and The Devil Went Down to Oregon by Ninkasi Brewing Company, Blood Lust by Spring House Brewing Company, Shallow Grave and Evil Twin by Heretic Brewing Company, The Dread by Elysian Brewing Company, Speedway Stout by AleSmith Brewing Company, Big A IPA by Smuttynose Brewing Company, and The Audacity of Hops by Cambridge Brewing Company. Derek Warren’s popular How to Pair Beer with Everything column on nepascene.com is now a podcast! Joined by NEPA Scene founder and editor Rich Howells and beer enthusiast George Zvirblis, they’ll try a different brew each week and examine it through all the senses, diving into personal experiences and opinions, pop culture, news, or whatever comes to mind. While Derek is an experienced beer reviewer and aficionado (and co-host of the Beer Geeks Radio Hour on WILK 103.1 FM) and George is a beer collector who travels to breweries nationwide, Rich is more of a casual craft beer drinker (and co-host of the NEPA Scene Podcast), so they’ll both offer their own uncensored perspectives and ask guests to share their own. Every episode is available on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher, and nepascene.com.
