Nate's alumni could film testimonials strengthening community and values over marketing hype. Building community through shared experiences Nate aims to shift from one-person recruitment to alumni-empowering friends to attend. Loreta advised sharing families' experiences through social media to drive retention and recruitment through shared joy. Expanding reach through media relationships Loreta suggested contributing articles globally to spread unique stories and validate leadership. Nate wondered how a part-time team could achieve this; Loreta proposed alumni and niche sports media relationships for local and international influence. Next steps in humanizing the narrative Loreta encouraged focusing on social platforms to better integrate messaging and storytelling. We are joined by Professor Hughes in the third event of our series of events to mark the centenary of the British Mandate in Palestine (1922-48). Professor Hughes will use material from his recent book on Britain's repression of the Arab revolt in the 1930s to detail Britain's devastatingly effective methods against colonial rebellion. The British army had a long tradition of pacification that it drew upon to support operations against Palestinian rebels in 1936. An Emergency State of repressive colonial legislation underpinned and combined with military action to crush the Arab revolt. The British had established in the 1920s in Palestine a civil government that ruled by proclamation and it codified in law norms of collective punishment that British soldiers used in 1936. This was ‘lawfare'. It ground out the rebellion with legally bounded curfews, demolition, fining, detention, punitive searches, shootings, and reprisals. Such repressive legislation facilitated soldiers' violent actions. Rebels were disorganised and unable to withstand such pacification measure, and so they lost. About the speaker: Matthew Hughes is Professor of History at Brunel University London. His 2019 Cambridge University Press book on Britain's pacification of Palestine during the Arab revolt has been translated into Arabic by the Center for Arab Unity Studies. He is currently working on a book examining the British colonial state and British soldiers' actions on Borneo in the 1960s during the Confrontation with Indonesia.

Stephan Ferris, a Bay Area activist lawyer, received one of the first 40 reported diagnoses of monkeypox after attending a Pride celebration in San Francisco, California. Here, Ferris sits down with host, Tammy Kremer, and Dr. Akanksha Vaidya, a clinical fellow responding to the current health crisis, to share his experience and discuss the need for improving treatment accessibility and provider education concerning a monkeypox diagnosis.   This is a follow-up on an episode we put out on June 1st of this year with Dr. Ina Park at a very different stage of the spread of monkeypox. With the US and the World Health Organization declaring this a public health emergency, Ferris and Dr. Vaidya use their respective lenses to reflect on representation of this disease in the media, transmission, and the stigma associated with those who receive a diagnosis. If the government is consistent about any one thing, it is this: it has an unnerving tendency to exploit crises and use them as opportunities for power grabs under the guise of national security. Cue the Emergency State, the government’s Machiavellian version of crisis management that justifies all manner of government tyranny in the so-called name of national security. The government’s proposed response to the latest round of mass shootings—red flag gun laws, precrime surveillance, fusion centers, threat assessments, mental health assessments, involuntary confinement—is just more of the same. It’s a simple enough formula: first, you create fear, then you capitalize on it by seizing power. Be warned, however, when you put the power to determine who is a potential danger in the hands of government agencies, the courts and the police. After all, as constitutional attorney John W. Whitehead makes clear in this week's podcast, this is the same government that uses the words “anti-government,” “extremist” and “terrorist” interchangeably.

Fatherland - Mini-Series Part 3 (13:30) Aaron connects an aborted essay, the anxiety of parenting and a vision of a fallen soldier to something like an allegiance to ‘The Fatherland’. We ask what the relationships between state power and patriarchal power could be. From the etymology of patriot, which follows the Greek patrios, we explore historical cultural expressions of the patriarch. Aaron points us to The Road (by Cormac McCarthy), The Walking Dead, Mad Max: Fury Road and Mad Men to argue that the characteristics of the mythical patriarch have been questioned and, maybe, undone. If so, Phil wonders about the implications in relation to state formation. Can a politics of state relations be imagined without the image of the patriarch? What does that entail? Recommendations (1:29:38) Aaron recommends The Hobbit (by J.R.R. Tolkien) as a good seasonal read. Phil recommends Dennis Molinaro’s An Exceptional Law: Section 98 and The Emergency State, 1919-1936.
