One of my coaches once said, the difference between panic and excitement is the exhalation. And it's so true. A normal reaction to stress is to hold your breath, or breathe very shallow. But when you are excited, the exhalation usually comes a bit more easily. And that exhalation can be such a game changer. Short-term stress responses are a natural part of life, and something that you can't avoid even if you would love to. But, long-term chronic stress is not something to take lightly as the consequences of that will affect you in a number of negative ways. I know this does not come as a surprise to you and I'm sure you are very aware of it. But what can you do to reduce the stress reactions? In this episode I will go through five ways that will support you to handle stress better and feel more in control. In this episode of Hormones with Sam, host Sam dives into the topic of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Contrary to its name, not all women with PCOS have cysts on their ovaries. Sam explains that PCOS is a metabolic issue that affects all hormones in the body. She discusses how insulin spikes can lead to lipogenesis, the process of fat production, which often results in belly fat for women with PCOS. Sam also highlights the prevalence of PCOS, with current statistics suggesting that 3 to 4 in 10 women in Australia are affected. However, she believes the numbers may be even higher due to outdated rating systems. It's easy to believe that the harder you work and the longer hours you put in, the more successful you become. Lise Alm, shares times in her career when the opposite was true. When she started saying no, setting boundaries, managing expectations and leaving work at a reasonable time, her performance doubled which was widely acknowledged around her. Lise is a lawyer, business developer, angel investor, and board professional with a mixed background from the tech and start-up world. Together with another power-woman, she runs ThinkAloud, a newly started consultancy firm that advises on strategy and operations for companies in change. In parallel, she is a member of several UN-led expert groups with a focus on the global digital economy, is co-founder and chairperson of a bunch of companies, and has held roles such as M&A lawyer, legal counsel at Spotify, Chief Strategy Officer at Worldfavour & Head of BD at the SCC Arbitration Institute. She's been around, to say the least. I truly loved my conversation with Lise as we discussed sustainability in a high-performance world, her zone of genius, her mindset, and her strategies when it comes to taking on new challenges. She also shares career advice that turns things a bit upside down and a lot more. Welcome to another episode of Restoring the Soul with Michael John Cusick. Today, Peter Zaremba is our guest, and we'll dive into the intricate topic of control and its negative impact. Control has become a paramount issue, particularly during the pandemic and times of global upheaval. It's a universal human condition, a survival mechanism, but often, the desire to control is tethered to our outcomes, and that's where things start getting complicated. Join us as we share our journeys with control, our struggles, and the toll it has taken on our well-being. It's not always easy to accept what we can't control, but there's a certain liberation in letting go. We'll explore the concept of the 'circle of control' - envisioning those things squarely under our control and those that aren't. As we meditate on our collective challenges with outcomes and control, we'll face the hard truth - that our happiness doesn't stem from our control over outcomes. We'll explore the confusing difference between a healthy desire for change and an unhealthy attachment to results. We'll delve into how our craving for control can lead to emotional turmoil, relationship struggles, and even addictive behaviors. Your brain is the most important tool you have. Are you taking care of it?Chronic stress affects your cognition, which is basically how you think, perceive, remember, and decide. I know that you are awesome at getting things done and tend to keep a high pace in your life. And I'm pretty sure that you have also had those days when you just can't remember where you put your keys, or when that important meeting is, even though you've checked your calendar like three times? Maybe you've even walked into a room and forgotten why you are there or keep on jumping from one task to another, not being able to focus for more than a few seconds. That's not just being 'busy'. That might be chronic stress talking. This is the second part in the series of How to Know When to Pull the Brake, listing the cognitive symptoms of chronic stress. Last week, I spoke about the physical and emotional symptoms, which are your body's signals to slow down. Now, let's zoom in on the signals from your brain. How do you know if you are pushing yourself in a healthy way, or pushing too hard, potentially leading to burnout?I meet high-achieving women leaders daily who are used to excelling in all areas of their lives. They get so much done and are very successful, but sometimes that hyper-achievement goes too far and they start noticing symptoms. I'm dedicated to supporting these women to thrive in their roles without sacrificing their health and happiness. I'm sure that you feel that a certain amount of stress and pressure comes with the job of being a leader. But when does that pressure become too much? When does it become unhealthy? This episode is the first in a series of How to Know When to Pull the Brake, starting with listing the physical & emotional symptoms of chronic stress and exhaustion. Next week will go into the second part, the cognitive symptoms. Why is this so important to know? Because the faster you pull the brake when you start noticing symptoms, the faster the recovery. Listening to your body's signals and adapting accordingly is key to performing at a high but sustainable level. As a kid I remember waiting all year for Fall and Winter Break. Not only did we get to enjoy class activities but I remember getting an opportunity to eat all the seasonal dishes , write a list, sing all the holiday songs in the car ride around town, and hang up the stringing lights. While some may be excited to spread the festive cheer, decorate homes and celebrate while gathering around with close family and friends. Other people may experience deep sadness and high stress during the holiday season. “Nearly a quarter of Americans reported feeling ‘extreme stress' come holiday time, according to a poll by the American Psychological Association.” Surveys and research have shown that some individuals suffer from anxiety due to the pressure of being around challenging family members that lack boundaries, Shame around financial pressure to food and gifts, and sadness from memories or anniversaries of a loss of a loved one. Emotional symptoms are one of the core issues with autism. From alexithymia to being unable to read others emotions, emotions lie at the core of human communication. Being shut off from intuition, not recognizing emotions in yourself or others, and having no sense of self were serioues problems for me. Emotional symptoms are at the core of a life of autism. Being unable to read others emotions is a problem when communication depends on comprehending another's emotional state. We go over the next 4 symptoms which are: a lack of smiling, a limited emotional experience or vocabulary, words of emotion aren't understood, and how a lack of emotional awareness and understanding of emotional context causes isolation and problems for those on the spectrum. We give examples of advertising being called 'propaganda', as well as my inappropriate behaviors and comments in different situations as I grew up. We think you'll find this enlightening! ~Mark & Michelle @ Heal Your Autism Mark and Michelle Hedges have been married 25 years. We hope you enjoy the show! ~Mark & Michelle @ Heal Your Autism Mark and Michelle Hedges have been married 25 years. For the first 19 years of the marriage, Mark was an undiagnosed autistic. Menopause occurs when there are very few eggs left to be fertilized, and the output of estrogen and progesterone is so small that the eggs are not stimulated to ovulate for most women, this happens in their early 50s. For other women, some external event brings on menopause: Bilateral oophorectomy puts the body into menopause immediately because there ar no ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone. A partial oophorectomy has a less severe impact on the body because only one ovary is removed. Removal of the uterus speed up menopause by approximately 2-3 years. Chemotherapy for cancer or pelvic radiation may damage the ovaries so they can no longer produce hormones. However, some younger women who are treated for cancer may begin to menstruate and ovulate again.
Many women experience physical and emotional symptoms during the menopause transition, caused mainly by #hormonal imbalance. Typically, a woman will begin to experience #menopause symptoms around her mid-40s. This stage of gradually falling and fluctuating hormone levels is called perimenopause, which can last for several years before a woman's final period. For most women, perimenopause symptoms end at menopause; however, some symptoms will continue. Below you will find plenty of useful information about all symptoms of menopause. Having a good understanding of their causes, prevention, and treatment options will help you tackle them with more ease.
