In September 2013, I was having the time of my life but burned the most important budget I had; my own health.I was project managing a dream project. The idea was my own, and I got to run with it - Spotify style. Everything would have been perfect if it wasn't for my own health. At the age of 27, when the project was finished, I just couldn't get out of bed. I had burned out and was left a wreck. I absolutely loved my job, but I had no idea how to take care of myself. The recovery took many years but eventually, it led me to what I do today. For this, I am incredibly grateful. I decided to share my story, to help others not end up where I did, or seek support, for themselves, a colleague, or a loved one if they can relate. Or get inspiration to what's possible even if it seems really dark at the time. I talk about my own burnout story, the background, the symptoms, the transformation, and the learnings. I also share how this led me to become a wellbeing and performance coach for women leaders and how I support my clients today. This episode was released for the first time exactly one year ago, but I decided to release it again, on the day, 11 years after my burnout, as it had a lot of downloads and is still as relevant today. I'm so excited for this third season, kickstarting by talking to the innovation leader, entrepreneur, board professional, TED-X speaker, and creator Sofie Lindblom.Sofie and I first met at Spotify in 2013, where she quickly advanced to lead the global innovation team.Over the past decade, she has continued to lead innovation initiatives across many roles and organizations such as H&M, Kronans Apotek, and Electrolux. As an entrepreneur, she is the founder and former CEO of ideation360, a digital platform designed to streamline the collection and management of ideas. In 2020, she launched her second venture, SPCE, to create the world's first digital salesroom to digitize the customer relationship between organizations and reduce their carbon footprint. Currently, Sofie is the Chief Product Officer at SPCE, leading the product and development teams. She has been named one of the 100 most influential women in business, one of Sweden's 100 future female leaders, and one of the 50 most inspiring women in the European technology industry. In this conversation, we talk about the need for more women in tech, how to get into boards rooms, creativity, stress, and the negative correlation between innovation and back-to-back meetings. We also dive into doing things she is scared of and how she works with mindset and confidence on stage. On top of that, we explore the definition of success and the challenges of being a founder. And of course, my favourite topic, Sustainable High Performance. She's a woman of many hats, to say the least, and this episode is packed.I hope you will enjoy listening! Do you feel present in your life? Or do you experience that wherever you are and whatever you do, you are already on your way to the next activity, to-do, and constantly in your head? This might not seem like a biggie, but it actually is. Not only does it create unnecessary stress and tension, it also robs you of a lot of joy and pleasure in life. Good news is, that practicing being present is something that will benefit you so much, in your life, leadership, performance and relationships. And now is a great time to make changes and do some experimentation in this area.In this episode, we will dive into using summer vacation as an opportunity to practice being more present. Being present is not woo-woo, it's a muscle that you can train, and being able to use that muscle, is a superpower that you might not be aware of. One of my coaches once said, the difference between panic and excitement is the exhalation. And it's so true. A normal reaction to stress is to hold your breath, or breathe very shallow. But when you are excited, the exhalation usually comes a bit more easily. And that exhalation can be such a game changer. Short-term stress responses are a natural part of life, and something that you can't avoid even if you would love to. But, long-term chronic stress is not something to take lightly as the consequences of that will affect you in a number of negative ways. I know this does not come as a surprise to you and I'm sure you are very aware of it. But what can you do to reduce the stress reactions? In this episode I will go through five ways that will support you to handle stress better and feel more in control. Are you your own harshest critic or your own best friend? Or maybe a combination of the two? Shifting from self-criticism to more self-compassion is one of the most important shifts you need to make to get to the next level, both in life and in your career. It's true, constantly beating yourself up or down for everything you do, or don't do, is not serving you or your purpose on this earth. I know you have so many talents and super powers, but still this feeling of not-enoughness kicks in. It's very natural and normal but I know it holds you back from reaching your potential and going after your dreams. What can you do about it? This episode is all about that; giving you concrete tools on how to switch negative thoughts so you can feel better, perform better, become more present and focus your energy on the things that matter.I will also talk about the consequences of letting that inner critic stay loud. DOWNLOAD THE 15 HEALTHY HABITS GUIDE HEREMany of the clients I meet (and the people around me) are not getting enough sleep.Either they can't sleep because of high stress-levels during the day, or because they work a lot in the evenings, they get disturbed by kids, or because of habits that might be contra-productive to a good night's sleep that they aren't aware of. Is this you? Or someone you know?Whatever the reason is, there are a LOT of things that can be done to improve sleep, and the bonus effects of turning a bad sleeping situation around are huge. In this episode, I will go through 15 healthy habits that will improve the likelihood of getting a good night's sleep. We can't always control all the things that might keep us up at night, but let's focus on the things that we can control. Sleep is a topic that is very close to my heart, as there have been times in my life when I have felt that I was operating at 20-30% of my capacity, at best, because of sleep deprivation, so I really understand what it's like, and have been hacking my own and my client's sleep for many years now. As soon as I hear that someone is struggling with sleep, I always go through this checklist with them to quickly see where to focus the attention. Some of the habits or tricks are super low-hanging fruit, and some require a bit more effort, but all of them are great and will benefit you, your health, performance, and sleep. Last week I had a discovery call with a woman leader who felt that her perfectionism was keeping her stuck in procrastination, stress & performance anxiety. She was never good enough in her own eyes and the fear of failure stopped her from taking on projects that she wanted, because if she did, and failed, she felt that she couldn't live with herself. So it was better to not do it at all, because then she did not risk anything. I asked her; What are you longing for? And she paused, and said, “I want to feel peace. I want to be able to enjoy life more. To be present. To not always be striving, to be able to let go of things and not be so demanding of the people around me. To have more fun. And to not always over-work stuff until the last minute.” You have no idea how common this is, so that's why I want to bring it up. This woman has everything you could wish for on paper, and still feel so self-critical on the inside, pushing herself like crazy. Maybe you even recognize yourself in some of this? This is an episode series in two parts. In this first one, I will talk about what perfectionism is, and the real cost of it on your health, relationships, and performance. I will go into three different kinds of perfectionism and how those might play out in your life. In the second part I will talk about some of the root causes, how I work with my clients to reduce their perfectionism, and some things you can do yourself. Today, you will meet my former client Ellen Dieden Sandell. Two years ago, when she reached out to me, she was feeling demotivated, overwhelmed and on the verge of burnout. As a high-achieving women leader and HR Director at a scale-up, her life was full on with very little time for reflection, rest & recovery. She was constantly doubting herself and her capabilities and feeling that she was not in the right place, but had no idea what to do differently. This is her story of our journey together and to the place where she is now, living her dream life as a coach and entrepreneur. We cover how she discovered her true passion, how she overcame her fears, limiting beliefs, resistance, regained her strength and energy and started her own company. We also talk about our shared passion for women's health and how that was big part of her healing journey and the huge role the coaching program played in her transformation. This episode is filled with golden nuggets on how to incorporate self-care into your daily busy life, things you can do to balance your hormones, and a big dose of inspiration to what's possible when you find your own path.Find the show notes and other resources at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast--------------------Find all episodes & show notes at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast. Pingis is a serial entrepreneur, CEO, author, podcaster, board professional and economist who has founded several companies within e-commerce and fast-moving consumer goods. Today she is running Economista, which is Sweden's largest community for women related to personal finances. Now she is empowering hundreds of thousands of women to take control over their finances and through that, their lives. Pingis and I spoke about juggling career with two small kids, sleep, exercise, confidence, saying no, setting boundaries, values, what she needs to stay healthy and a lot more. It's easy to believe that the harder you work and the longer hours you put in, the more successful you become. Lise Alm, shares times in her career when the opposite was true. When she started saying no, setting boundaries, managing expectations and leaving work at a reasonable time, her performance doubled which was widely acknowledged around her. Your reality is highly influenced by your belief systems. And this is both positive and negative!Positive if your beliefs support you in your life and where you want to go and negative if they hold you back and lead to destructive behaviors. Beliefs are a fascinating topic we will look at today in this episode because they are fundamental to your success and wellbeing. And why is that? Because what you believe shapes every aspect of your life. From the way you interact with people to the risks you take, and even how you respond to challenges. Your beliefs are like the software running in the background of your mind, quietly but powerfully influencing every action you take. What if I told you that by simply becoming aware of and reshaping these beliefs, you can unleash a version of yourself that's more powerful, confident, and successful? As a coach and wellbeing specialist, I've seen incredible transformations, all starting with a shift in beliefs. Do you want to leverage your strengths, skills, and passions? I thought so
Imagine that you had a power that could shift your mindset, your thoughts, and your energy to more positive and empowering ones, in a matter of minutes.Would this give you a sense of being in control? And make you bounce back from challenges quicker?I believe it would. The good news is that this power is accessible to you, and it's a technique called reframing. This morning I was out walking in the woods, as I usually do. First I was a bit bitter and tired and not in a great mood because I have gotten way too little sleep lately due to being sick myself and also having sick kids. Then I realized something. I have a choice here! The choice to dig an even deeper hole or to see this situation as an opportunity to learn something or make a change of some kind. I coached myself in this very moment, and you can do the same! This is reframing in action. In this episode, we will look into this powerful tool and I will also teach you how to do it yourself. I'm pretty sure you will find it very handy both at work and in your personal life. This is the story of when I accidentally flushed down my phone in the toilet and felt incredibly relieved! Click this link to find out more about Balance & BrillianceI used to be addicted to being busy. The more I stuffed in, the better I felt. Until it all became too much and I felt suffocated instead.I remember one day when I was studying at Uppsala University, I was 24. At the time I was vice president of the student union, so on top of all the studies and parties, I had a huge amount of meetings and other commitments. And one day, I accidentally dropped my phone in the toilet and flushed!Pooff, and it was gone!Probably from doing so much multi-tasking and being so busy. And tired! But the crazy thing was that instead of panicking that my life-line was gone, I started laughing hysterically. I was so relieved that I couldn't be reached for at least a few days, until I managed to get a new phone. That constant feeling of being haunted, where I wasn't in control of my own schedule, and not seeing the end and a break, made me go bananas. And so many of those things I loved, and had chosen myself! And still, it made me totally exhausted. This was the time leading up to my first mini-burnout, and a few years later, I crashed for real. In hindsight, I can see all the things that led to that, but not at the time. I had no idea how to slow down and take care of myself. Today, we're diving deep into a topic that's close to my heart – the art of slowing down to speed up.That is; how to find space & rest in a busy schedule, to own your time, so you can continue performing at a high level, and maybe even higher? A couple of months ago, I had a coaching session with a new VIP client, and as always, I finished off by asking; What are your main takeaways from today? She said, “That maybe, there's a way that I can be successful, without killing myself”.And I answered, YES there is! And not only that, you will be MORE successful this way.Her response really hit me, and I know that so many of you out there, are working so hard, but with constant feelings of self-doubt, self-criticism, stress, and anxiety, which affects both your mental health and your performance. The topic my client and I had been exploring during that session, was the 10 saboteurs from Positive Intelligence and how they affected her. What on earth is that you might ask? It's a framework that could revolutionize how you think, act, feel and live, and unlock your true potential. In this episode I will walk you through those 10 saboteurs, giving you examples of how they might show up in your life and how counteracting them will boost your mental fitness.Find the show notes and other resources at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast--------------------Find all episodes & show notes at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast. What would be possible in your life if you got more restorative sleep? And what are the bonus effects of that? And the bonus effects of the bonus effects? This is something that is worth reflecting on! Sleep is such an important cornerstone of health and high performance, and still, so many are suffering from poor sleep and/or not enough sleep. Taking care of your sleep is the nicest gift you can give yourself and it will truly have a ripple effect in your life.Giving yourself time and space to relax and unwind in the evening can have such a big impact on the sleep you get - and of course, what and how much you can achieve during the day. I decided to share my story, to help others not end up where I did, or seek support, for themselves, a colleague, or a loved one if they can relate.Find the show notes and other resources at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast--------------------Find all episodes & show notes at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast. Do you wish you had a superpower to use in any situation of overwhelm, stress, chaos, or uncertainty? I have good news for you. There is such a thing. Meditation is a super powerful tool, and science is proving time and time again, its positive effects on mental and physical health. And yet, so many are struggling to make it a daily practice. Why is that? Because of misconceptions, beliefs, fears, and blocks. In the previous episode, nr 16, Astrid Gyllenkrok Kristensen was a guest on the show. She's the CEO and co-founder of the FemTech startup LEIA Health and she shared some of her tips and tricks on how to stay healthy and sane in the stressful world of being a business owner and mum of three. She mentioned that practicing meditation was the most important hack and that it made a massive difference in her life.So I decided to dedicate this episode to explaining what meditation actually does to your brain and exploring the misconceptions and blocks many women have about it. The intention of this episode is not to overwhelm you with more to-dos and make you feel bad about yourself for not doing things that are good for you. It's rather about raising knowledge around tools available to reduce the feelings of overwhelm and mental fatigue and make you see things about yourself that you were not aware of. Just like a coach is supposed to do :)Find the show notes and other resources at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast/17--------------------Find all episodes & show notes at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast. Your brain is the most important tool you have. Are you taking care of it?Chronic stress affects your cognition, which is basically how you think, perceive, remember, and decide. I know that you are awesome at getting things done and tend to keep a high pace in your life. And I'm pretty sure that you have also had those days when you just can't remember where you put your keys, or when that important meeting is, even though you've checked your calendar like three times? Maybe you've even walked into a room and forgotten why you are there or keep on jumping from one task to another, not being able to focus for more than a few seconds. That's not just being 'busy'. That might be chronic stress talking. This is the second part in the series of How to Know When to Pull the Brake, listing the cognitive symptoms of chronic stress. Last week, I spoke about the physical and emotional symptoms, which are your body's signals to slow down. Now, let's zoom in on the signals from your brain. How do you know if you are pushing yourself in a healthy way, or pushing too hard, potentially leading to burnout?I meet high-achieving women leaders daily who are used to excelling in all areas of their lives. They get so much done and are very successful, but sometimes that hyper-achievement goes too far and they start noticing symptoms. I'm dedicated to supporting these women to thrive in their roles without sacrificing their health and happiness. I'm sure that you feel that a certain amount of stress and pressure comes with the job of being a leader. But when does that pressure become too much? When does it become unhealthy? This episode is the first in a series of How to Know When to Pull the Brake, starting with listing the physical & emotional symptoms of chronic stress and exhaustion. Next week will go into the second part, the cognitive symptoms. Why is this so important to know? Because the faster you pull the brake when you start noticing symptoms, the faster the recovery. Listening to your body's signals and adapting accordingly is key to performing at a high but sustainable level. You want to have the energy to deal with anything that might come up but, being a busy bee with multiple responsibilities and pressure to perform at your best, this equation can be tricky. What often gets neglected for many ambitious women leaders, is sleep and food. Without enough sleep, no energy, and without proper food, your sleep will suffer. So, today, I want to highlight one key strategy that can transform your sleep experience: to stabilize your blood sugar during the day. When your blood sugar goes on a roller coaster throughout the day, it actually creates a stress response. When the blood sugar drops, your body tries to bring it up. It pumps out adrenaline & cortisol, the “fight or flight” hormones that, among other things, tells your liver to make more glucose (blood sugar).Adrenaline also makes your heart race and it can make you feel cranky, stressed, and anxious and you can't think properly. This episode will cover how you can eat to optimize blood sugar levels, and therefore, feel better during the day and improve your sleep at night.Find the show notes and other resources at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast --------------------Find all episodes & show notes at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast. Do you often get stuck in the self-critical rabbit hole?I'm seeing too many of my clients and friends being ruled by the feeling of not-enoughness. They are not enough as a parent, as a partner, as a co-worker, friend, sister, daughter – you name it. This is creating unnecessary stress and can spiral into anxiety and impostor syndrome. I'm hearing things like, “If I stay late at work, I feel that I'm not home enough and miss out on time with the kids, and if I'm going home early, I feel that I'm not committed and ambitious enough at work and others will judge me.” This is a VERY common thought among ambitious high-achieving women leaders, and it's not doing you any good. Not only does it sabotage your mental health and happiness, it also shrinks your performance levels. That's what this episode is about, to learn how to become aware of the stories that are running in your head and what to do with them.Find the full transcript and other resources at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast/1--------------------Find all episodes & show notes at sofiavoncelsing.com/podcast.
