Trauma can be subtly present in coaching sessions, even when clients may not explicitly seek help for trauma-related issues. Trauma-informed coaching helps clients process trauma in the present and integrate their experiences in safe ways through creating a trusting environment where they feel heard and understood.  Our guests today are: Jenny Rogers is a leader in a new approach to coaching which combines insights from psychotherapy with the pragmatic emphasis on change, drawing on a career in coaching spanning three decades. She works with senior clients in the law, medicine, finance, healthcare, performing arts and media who typically face a major transition in their lives. Jenny won the Henley Business School Award for Outstanding Contribution to Coaching in 2019. She is the author of Are You Listening? and nine other books on coaching. Julia Vaughan Smith is an Accredited Master Executive Coach and Supervisor and was in private practice as a Psychotherapist, focusing on trauma processing and healing. Together with Jenny Rogers, she has co-facilitated Masterclasses and associated workshops on trauma and coaching. She is the author of a number of books including ‘Coaching and Trauma', ‘Therapist to Coach', and ‘Daughters: How to Untangle Yourself from Your Mother', exploring the impact of developmental and ancestral trauma on this relationship and how to become untangled. “The way you see money is about the way you see yourself and your lived experiences.”  Dr. Darnyelle Jervey Harmon Ever find yourself saying things like "all money is not good money?" If you've said this, you might be experiencing a trauma response to money. According to Google, Money Trauma is defined this way: a term that describes emotional, cognitive, relational, and physical symptoms that can result from significant financial stressors. Some examples of money trauma include poverty, financial co-dependency, divorce, sudden loss of assets, housing insecurity, money scarcity, caregivers who valued work more than family time, caregivers who taught that money success was the only worthy metric of success.    The truth is money, which is a tool, medium of exchange and transactional energetic expression is neutral - it is neither good or bad. But, based on your experiences and what you have been taught to believe you might think is bad or evil and as a result experience what some call money trauma. According to Google, Money Trauma is defined this way: a term that describes emotional, cognitive, relational, and physical symptoms that can result from significant financial stressors. Some examples of money trauma include poverty, financial co-dependency, divorce, sudden loss of assets, housing insecurity, money scarcity, caregivers who valued work more than family time, caregivers who taught that money success was the only worthy metric of success.    When I first became an entrepreneur, I used to hear constantly “entrepreneurs solve problems for profit.”  The challenge for me back then was that I hadn't ever experienced profit.  I was born in lack to lack-minded drug addicts and when given a chance to have my own money, the lack I was born into seeped into my own money management. It took filing bankruptcy and the bankruptcy trustee requiring that I take a financial literacy course where I was exposed to Happy Pocket Full of Money by David Cameron Gikandi.  That book changed my life and the way I saw money and therefore myself.  It was the beginning of my journey to heal my money traumas and the subsequent trauma responses that are quips and axioms used by most of the people you know every day without understanding the real consequences of speaking such things over themselves. Literally one year after filing bankruptcy, I was a millionaire and a few years later I was running a million-dollar business.  Today, I am a proud, unapologetic multi-millionaire running a multi-million-dollar company. While I am not a mental health professional and I do not play one on TV, it is my hope that this episode spurs a desire in you to determine which trauma responses you're believing and living so that you can disrupt the pattern and shift your life and business around money.  Let's be clear: money matters.  It's hard to be the change when you don't have any.  And until lack to loosens its grip on your conscious and subconscious mind, beliefs, thoughts and actions, you will mess with your money and that will make it challenging to achieve your goal to make the move to millions. “Effects of Sexual Trauma Experiencing sexual abuse puts individuals at risk of experiencing long-term effects from their trauma. In children, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) like sexual trauma can contribute to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance misuse in adulthood.6 These challenges can also negatively impact their ability to pursue education, job opportunities, and personal growth. Negative Coping Strategies People may develop negative coping strategies in response to sexual trauma. Some may engage in ‘numbing' tactics like substance use, disordered eating, and self-harm. Others may dissociate to disconnect from their bodies or external surroundings. Self-isolation or avoiding trauma triggers are additional examples of unhealthy coping patterns. Physical Symptoms Sexual trauma can coincide with various somatic experiences that range in severity. Some of the physical effects of sexual assault include sexual dysfunction (vaginal pain, erectile dysfunction, limited to no libido), acute or chronic pain, muscle tightness, gastrointestinal distress, headaches, and panic attacks. Difficulty Going Back to Normal Life Readjusting to daily life after experiencing trauma can be challenging as survivors may have difficulty in their relationships, returning to work or school, and regaining a sense of normalcy and identity. They may also experience sexual anxiety, as even healthy sexual experiences may trigger flashbacks of their trauma.6 Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) PTSD from sexual abuse can occur with either an immediate or delayed onset. Hallmark symptoms include ruminating thoughts about the abuse, flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and intense feelings of shame or guilt. Not everyone who experiences sexual trauma will develop PTSD, but a lack of support, poor coping skills, and complex trauma can increase the risk. Relationship Difficulties Sexual trauma triggers can seep into everyday life, and they may become more pronounced in intimate relationships. For example, some people find being emotionally or physically vulnerable with another person challenging. They may struggle to trust others due to a past history of betrayal. Similarly, they might present as either overly guarded or permissive with partners. Mental Health Conditions Sexual trauma is a risk factor for numerous mental health conditions, including anxiety, substance use disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, and dissociative disorders. Sexual trauma itself likely does not single-handedly cause these conditions. However, the unresolved effects can result in significant distress, leading to subsequent issues. Loss of Self The emotional effects of sexual assault can erode an internal sense of safety and chip away at core values. Some people report a deep hollowness after experiencing or processing trauma. These feelings may speak to the intense fear, anger, and helplessness that can emerge after such a life-threatening event. Emotional Dysregulation Emotional dysregulation is often a product of feeling powerless and unsafe after significant events, including sexual trauma. Emotional dysregulation can include problems expressing emotions, intense and sudden mood swings, and lashing out. Some people may also struggle with self-destructive behaviors or suicidal thoughts. Depersonalization & Derealization Depersonalization refers to feeling detached from the body or inner thoughts. Similarly, derealization is a disconnect from the outside world, where the external environment may feel foggy, dreamlike, or otherwise distorted. On this weeks episode of Do the Work podcast, Sabrina is joined by her big sister Jaimie Bailey for a heart-to-heart talk on trauma and its manifestation in her relationship with food. Jaimie is a holistic nutritionist passionate about wellness and a healthy relationship with food and diet and she has her own indoor cycling studio in San Diego called Grindhouse Cycle.  Jaimie talks about how trauma initially manifested itself with her and her fixation on tiny details about herself. Her older brother's addictions began to influence her choices and her addiction to the high. Her household environment was hostile and lacked joy, so her feeling of joy was tied to substances. It also led to the avoidant attachment style because of coping alone and the lack of trust in others to protect her.  Jaimie shares her experiences with body shape changes in high school and while living in New York. She lost weight through healthy lifestyle changes, but her home environment led to her experiencing body dysmorphia. Jaimie realizes that her relationship with food has been influenced by her need to be numb and avoid addressing her unresolved inner child issues.  Her now partner, Ashton, supported her during her relapses of indulging in food over the years. Her discovery of a holistic nutrition program introduced a new way of looking at food as a source of anxiety. Jaimie reflects on how working with her clients is like turning pain into purpose, yet she sometimes feels like an imposter because of shame. The susceptibility to relapse is there; she had to figure out how to make peace with it all daily.  However, at the end of the day, her radical acceptance of her addictions helps her to be fully present for her clients. Her current approach to food is to consider all the factors that affect her relationship with it and whether each meal will provide her with the necessary energy. The first step in dealing with a problem like binge eating is understanding why it is happening. Many of you have been told that you complain too much or that you're too negative. Neurodivergent brains tend to report the truth, and we are very discerning about what we like and what we don't like. This can be perceived as negativity, complaining or being depressing to be around. What if it really wasn't about you?   CO-HOST Jen Perry, MSEd, MA, LPC   HIGHLIGHTS Summary   In this conversation, Patricia and Jen discuss the difference between complaining and sharing honestly about personal struggles. They explore the challenges of navigating conversations around difficult topics and the importance of holding space for each other's experiences. Has your partner ever accused you of pulling away from the relationship? Of shutting down? Of being emotionally unavailable? Maybe you even feel that you are. Then you wonder if this is all your fault for not being engaged with them anymore. This is another example of reactive abuse or trauma response. My husband accused me of pulling away emotionally. I wanted to scream, Of course I'm pulling away! Even a child knows to pull away when they have been hurt over and over again. I was accused of not being emotionally available to him anymore. Of course I'm not! I had peeled open my heart and laid it at his feet repeatedly. And he had stomped all over it again and again. You want me to continue making myself available for that??? You can't be serious? Do you really not understand this? Can you really not see why I pull away? After all the attempts I made at explaining this to him, I could not believe that he could stand there and tell me that I should be more emotionally available to him! You have got to be kidding me! Shutting down is a normal and common trauma response to an abusive environment. Don't judge your responses. They are completely justified and understandable. Identify where they came from. An abusive environment. They are survival skills. But you don't need these survival skills in a safe environment. As you learn more about them, you will begin the process of letting them go.
