Graduation is a big moment. It means one chapter is ending and a new one is starting. You might feel happy, proud, relieved, or even a little worried about what's next. It's okay to have all these feelings. The most important thing is to stop and see how far you've come. Graduation also means remembering all the hard work and sacrifices you and the people who helped you have made. The future might seem unsure, and that's okay. After graduation, new chances will come, but it takes courage to try new things. Life doesn't always go as planned. You might face delays or problems, but that doesn't mean you failed. Keep going and remember why you started. Your reason will help you when things feel hard. In this graduation episode of Time Out with the Sports Doctor, I share encouragement for the Class of 2025. I talk about the power of knowing your purpose, dreaming big, and building a strong support team to help you step confidently into your future. Tune in as we reflect on lessons learned, celebrate how far you've come, and talk about what it really takes to keep winning on and off the field. In a world full of copy-and-paste success stories, it's easy to believe that hard work alone is enough to make you stand out. But the truth is, doing your best doesn't always mean you're meeting the standard and meeting the standard doesn't mean you're the best. Many people are comfortable with working harder or improving their skills, but the real challenge lies in being different. Being different means stepping outside of what's normal, expected, or accepted. That's uncomfortable. You don't have to be perfect. You don't need to rush. But if your goal is to be the best, then just meeting the standard is not enough. You have to push past it. You have to study what the best are doing, learn from them, and then take it a step further in your own way. What makes you different might just be what makes you great. Be different. Be great. In this episode, I reflect on a powerful experience I had at the Momentum Conference with Dr. Eric Thomas. I will share the key takeaways from his speech, focusing on the importance of setting a high standard for yourself, being relentless in pursuing your goals, and the mindset shift required to achieve success. Tune in to hear how you can apply these lessons to elevate your game! The journey through medical school and residency is tough, and it often feels like there's no time for anything else. But once the white coat is on, life outside of medicine starts to matter more. The pandemic forced many to rethink everything, showing that being a doctor isn't just about treating patients—it's also about handling personal finances, making smart investments, and taking control of your future. Financial literacy, something many of us didn't learn early on, became a real game-changer. Talking about money, real estate, and managing debt should happen sooner, not later. The truth is, many doctors face financial struggles in silence. Acknowledging this is the first step to changing that. It's time to open up the conversation about money in medicine, learn about finances, and empower the next generation to succeed in both their careers and personal lives. Success is more than just the work inside the white coat—it's about building a life outside of it too. Dr. Zwade Marshall is an Emory and Harvard-trained, double board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist. He serves as Chief Medical Officer of Regenerative Spine and Pain Specialists. With a background in Economics from Emory and clinical training from Harvard, Dr. Marshall co-founded Doc2Doc Lending to create physician-focused financial solutions after recognizing how traditional banks often misjudge the risk profile of early-career doctors. In this episode with Dr. Zwade Marshall of Doc2Doc Lending, we talk about the financial realities physicians face—from student loan debt and low early-career incomes to the challenges of building credit. We explore the importance of financial literacy and how destigmatizing debt can empower physicians to build wealth, stability, and peace of mind. "The beauty of companies that are started by folks who are a part of the community who understand the pressures, is that you get empathy with the business." – Dr. Zwade J. Private lending offers possible stock like returns over a short term time horizon while being uncorrelated with the activity of the stock market. There is thought to be a higher level of risk compared to investments like CDs or government bonds, but these investments can be backed by hard assets like real estate, and thus lowering the risk. Sound intriguing? Listen to learn more! In this episode, I mention the DLP Capital lending fund as an example. This is not meant to be investment advice and I get no compensation from DLP Capital. I have not personally invested with DLP Capital at the time of the creation of this podcast episode. I also mention Doc2Doc Lending, for which I do have a financial relationship and hold a small equity position (like holding stock) with Doc2Doc Lending.

They discuss how these experiences served as the inspiration for starting STAT Careers. On the platform healthcare professionals select 50 preferences they have for their ideal job and the hospitals post jobs also with 50 preferences selected. Subsequently, their proprietary algorithm finds potential matches for both the hospitals and potential employees. Drs. Adkins hope STAT Careers will make the healthcare job market more transparent and decrease turnover. Lastly, Drs. Adkins describe how they balance their busy lives of 2 practicing physicians, family life, and a growing startup. *Views expressed in this podcast are those of the individuals, not their respective institutions Thank you to our sponsor Doc2Doc Lending, the Personal Lending platform designed for Doctors, by Doctors. In this episode we discuss why it matters to what your brain is paying attention. There are several terms we discuss including: selective attention: tuning out unimportant details in order to focus on what matters mental filtering: focusing on the negative rather than the whole picture, negativity bias disqualifying the positive: minimizing the good things in our lives Reframing and changing perspective is key, but is NOT the same as toxic positivity. It is acknowledging that there is both good and bad in the world, but choosing to focus on the good parts on purpose. If you're stuck in negativity, we discuss ways to challenge your point of view. Eventually, with enough practice, neuroplasticity allows our default thoughts to be much more positive. Some quotes: George Lucas: "Your focus determines your reality." Tony Robbins: "Your life is controlled by what you focus on," and "energy flows where your attention goes." Tune in on Monday, 7/24/23, for a brand new episode of The Doctor Whisperer Show featuring Founder & CEO of SRA 831b Admin, Van Carlson. ▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎ A︎BOUT OUR GUEST: As Founder & CEO of SRA 831(b), Van is an innovator, developing products for a variety of industries that can take advantage of adding additional revenues while mitigating risk at the same time. By delivering institutional-type ideas to small-and-mid-sized business owners, SRA positions its clients at the forefront of their industry, allowing them to weather any storm. Van Carlson has an extensive background in Risk Management with more than 24 years in the industry. Prior to founding SRA, Van ran his own property and casualty firm for 15 years. With many commercial business owners as his clients, he saw the Great Recession of 2008 hit hard, and just like them, he was also affected by the sharp downturn in our economy. During this time, he realized there must be a better way to manage risk overall. From that desire to improve business operations for both himself and his clients, along with his extensive background in insurance, risk management, and finance, SRA was formed. Since its start in 2008, several changes in US Government regulations have allowed the business to thrive – substantiating what Van already believed in: businesses needed a better solution to mitigate risk and create a war chest for the future. In 2013, increases in domiciles allowed the company's success to skyrocket – with double-digit growth year over year. ▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎ Thank you to our sponsor, SRA 831b Admin, for supporting the show!Click here to learn more: http://831b.com And thank you to our sponsor, Doc2Doc Lending! In this episode, Kristin Yates, DO joins us to talk about Inappropriate Things Doctors Brag About (and why we keep doing it). The reason we do this is likely because of both external and internal pressures, she says. External pressures in that it's what everyone else is doing. And internal pressures in that many of us have replaced our sense of inherent worthiness as a human with having to earn our worthiness through performance. On the list of misguided badges of honor: Exhaustion Being Busy Time without a Vacation High Patient Volume Versus what we SHOULD be proud of: Spending quality time with fewer patients Resting every day and using our vacation time Cutting back hours if we need/want to Getting a full night of sleep Having a day of doing nothing Doing this is seemingly an act of rebellion in our current medical system. But the more we start doing it, the more inroads we'll make in creating a better place for ourselves and those who follow. On today's episode we talk with Dr Christina Shenvi who candidly helps us understand that we can't buy more time, but we can be wise about the time we are given. She comes with an incredible academic pedigree including Princeton, Berkeley, Yale, and UNC. She's a mom of 4, a practicing emergency physician, educator, keynote speaker, and leader. She's going to talk with us about how she gets everything done with tips for time management. Here are some highlights: Effort has three components: direction, intensity, and perseverance. Reflecting on if you are moving in the right direction and applying the right amount of intensity and persevering for only a given amount of time. How to approach a challenge: Priority: Spend time on the right things. (Can always make more money or invest money and earn interest. Can never make more time, yet we're often more careful with our money than with how we invest our time.) Get clear on personal priorities and big values. Make sure you're going the right direction. Strategy: Work in the right way. Architect your day/time. Deep work, shallow work, allocating time and deciding ahead of time what you will work on. Efficiency: Anything that requires little brainpower or that you do repeatedly, find ways to outsource, delegate, make efficient, or create shortcuts. Reflection: Activation barrier, and why managing time is all about managing emotions. In 2016, after serving in his role at Stanford for 11 years, he did the unthinkable and walked away while at the top of his field. Dr. Weill was burnt out from the daily battles of being a doctor: the patients that couldn't be treated because of finances, the operations that failed, and the countless hours spent trying to make the modern miracle of organ transplants a bit more miraculous. He has written a riveting memoir Exhale: Hope, Healing, and A Life in Transplant, which offers readers an inside look at the immense psychological pressure medical professionals face on the job and the toll a career in transplant took on one of the nation's most successful transplant doctors. The origin story of Unbiased Science began with the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Jessica Steier and Dr. Andrea Love realized that their friends and family were reaching out to them to make sense of all the information that was being hurled at them in terms of headlines. They were individually educating their networks, but then they decided to join forces and create Unbiased Science. The podcast was formalized after they did some joint Facebook lives and Instagram lives for their networks, and people commented on their chemistry and how comprehensively they were covering these topics. Unbiased Science provides a framework for thinking about how to approach information and misinformation. They cover a wide range of topics, including vaccines, COVID-19, nutrition, mental health, and more. They aim to provide evidence-based information and to debunk myths and misconceptions. They also provide tips on how to evaluate sources of information and how to be critical consumers of information. This episode is sponsored by Doc2Doc Lending. We are honored to host a special guest that is so brave to advocate for such a special topic. In this episode, Dr Michelle Chestovich shares her beautiful and heartbreaking story of how she lost her sister to death by suicide. She has become a voice and an advocate for not only awareness but "normalizing" this conversation. She is bringing it out of the darkness that is usually hides it and illuminating it with the amazing tools she learned by certifying as a physician coach. We are so glad she is with us on this episode and join her as allies in the quest to bring physician mental health to the forefront of every wellbeing initiative. Favorite moments from Dr Chestovich: The work that you are doing is certainly helping people because I think it begins, number one, raising awareness, and number two, normalizing that we too are human and we can have problems with our brain. Just like we can have kidney stones and back problems, our brains can get sick too, and in fact, we're at higher risk for such things. And again, this is like my town cry. Not only are we all at risk, but number two, children aren't gonna save us. I mean, I get it that it's part of our culture that we so identify with our profession, particularly physicians, but maybe we can realize like we are amazing humans outside of that. When we take that hat off, we're still pretty badass. Dr Alexandra Lukianoff had a promising start in the healthcare field as a Nurse Corps officer in the Navy. After leaving active duty, she was hired by DoD to the be the Patient Care Coordinator for the Division of Vascular Surgery at NMC Balboa in San Diego. It was during this time that she decided to become a surgeon, and so the long path began. During her time as a surgical resident at UCONN, she was determined to pursue a path to surgery. Her interests vacillated between general surgery and plastic surgery. She ultimately decided to go into trauma and critical care, but was able to do extra training and research in plastic surgery. During her chief year of surgery she had the life changing experience of breaking her back in a car accident. It took multiple operations and 10 months to get fully back on her feet, and back into surgical training. She was accepted into the trauma and critical care fellowship of her choice, and steamed forwards. Unfortunately she herniated two cervical discs during a lap chole, and for a time lost function and feeling in her dominant hand. She managed to complete her general surgery residency and decided to take the following year, after even more surgery and recovery time, to step away and to rethink her future. It was at this time that serendipity stepped in once again, and she became the Local Medical Director for a very busy wound care center in Connecticut. Over the next 3 years she became a physician mentor, and then a regional medical director offering education and training, as well as mentorship, and coaching to hundreds of physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses over the following years. Over the last year she has decided to work towards establishing a wellness practice in Franklin, TN. Over the years she has seen a great many patients and loved ones struggle with day to day health, self image, and weight loss with very few options available, and very little support in the area. She recently opened the doors to Taproot Total Wellness. She is starting a small individual practice, and is establishing a Wellness Network in the area to bring like minded physicians and businesses together. She has also just started a blog called ‘What is Wellness?' In this she is pulling together leaders from all different industries and walks of life to gain their perspectives on what wellness is to them, and how they implement it into their person and professional relationships.
