One of the Most Damaging Mistakes in HVAC System Design - Ignoring Part Load

The Engineers HVAC Podcast

One of the most common mistakes in HVAC system design is the lack of understanding of how equipment reacts at part load. Most equipment is sized for full-load temperature control with minimal attention to part-load temperature and humidity control. In this episode, we use psychrometrics to explain what happens at part load and the features you want to use to ensure proper temperature and humidity control over all load conditions. This third installment of our series builds on the information in parts 1 and 2. The links to all three sections are provided below. Watch Psychrometrics Part 1: https://youtu.be/vd2mPSVqvZ4 Watch Psychrometrics Part 2: https://youtu.be/4Z_usQB9vQ8 Watch Psychrometrics Part 3: https://youtu.be/hhsAsyX3VBc Download your Psychrometric Chart Here: https://www.insightusa.com/psychrometric-chart-pdf Visit our YouTube Channel, Insight Partners HVAC TV: https://www.youtube.com/InsightPartnersHVACTV Insight Partners Website: www.insightusa.com Connect with me on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tony-mormino View current line card: https://www.insightusa.com/manufacturers Connect to Insight Partners on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/insightusa We cover the full-load and part-load psychrometric processes of constant volume air handling units, including features like face and bypass and return air bypass. The dehumidification process is explained with varying reheat sources of electric heat, gas heat, and hot gas reheat. By the end of this episode, you'll have a comprehensive understanding of psychrometrics and be able to apply this knowledge in your field. Psychrometrics is a branch of thermodynamics that studies air's physical and thermodynamic properties and the relationships between these properties. The word "psychrometrics" comes from the Greek words "psuchron," which means "cold," and "metron," which means "measure." Therefore, psychrometrics is the measurement of the properties of air, including temperature, humidity, and pressure. One of the most essential tools used in psychrometrics is the psychrometric chart. The psychrometric chart is a graphical representation of the thermodynamic properties of air. It is a chart that displays the relationships between temperature, humidity, and pressure. The chart calculates the various properties of air, including the dew point, relative humidity, and enthalpy. Download your Psychrometric Chart Here: https://www.insightusa.com/psychrometric-chart-pdf To use the psychrometric chart, one must first determine the dry-bulb temperature, which is the air temperature as measured by a thermometer. Next, one must determine the wet-bulb temperature, which is the air temperature as measured by a thermometer with a wet wick. These two temperatures are then used to locate the point on the chart that represents the current state of the air. Once the current state of the air has been located on the psychrometric chart, it is possible to calculate various properties of the air, such as the dew point, relative humidity, and enthalpy. The dew point is the temperature at which the air must be cooled for water vapor to condense into liquid water. The relative humidity is the ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the maximum amount of water vapor that could be present at the current temperature and pressure. Enthalpy is the total heat content of the air. Understanding the psychrometric chart is essential for anyone involved in the design, installation, and maintenance of air conditioning and ventilation systems. It is also essential for anyone working in meteorology, agriculture, and industrial processing, where the properties of air play a crucial role.

RACT manual co-author Eugene Silberstein joins the podcast to talk about the titular topic of his book, Pressure Enthalpy Without Tears.  Pressure Enthalpy Without Tears is a book that introduces engineering concepts to HVAC technicians in a way they can understand and apply in the field. Enthalpy is a fancy way of saying “heat,” and we use it to refer to the total heat content (BTUs). The pressure-enthalpy chart shows the relationship between the refrigerant pressure and enthalpy in a system; it's like a P-T chart that shows the relationship between heat content instead of temperature.  Each refrigerant has its own pressure-enthalpy chart, but the points and lines on the chart usually form a right trapezoid. Dirty air filters and other less-than-ideal conditions can distort the trapezoid or shift it on the chart. Each side of the trapezoid represents the refrigerant inside a major component of the HVAC system: evaporator, compressor, condenser, and metering device. The pressure-enthalpy diagram allows you to get a look at individual components while keeping the entire system in mind.  To plot points on a pressure-enthalpy chart, you need the high side pressure, low side pressure, condenser outlet temperature, evaporator outlet temperature, and compressor inlet temperature. Pressure is usually measured in absolute units (rather than gauge units), but ballpark estimates are typically sufficient. Entropy is another concept we need to consider. Compression theoretically leaves no additional entropy and is reversible. Crossing a line of entropy means that a process is no longer reversible. Eugene and Bryan also discuss: Technicians vs. engineers Temperature vs. heat content Psychrometric and pressure-enthalpy charts Using the pressure-enthalpy diagram to assess operation costs Electrical measurements Predicting compressor failure Putting passion into learning and trades education   You can visit https://www.escogroup.org/ to purchase Pressure Enthalpy Without Tears and access all of ESCO Group's resources. These are released FRQs from previous exams and copyright of the College Board.Question 4 of the 2021 exam starts with our favorite equation: mcAT (1:34). In part b) you calculate the mass of iron and in part (c) discuss the effect of doubling the mass of iron on the maximum temperature. Question 5 of the 2017 looks at similar concepts, but it is a combustion reaction (3:40). It starts again with calculating the magnitude of heat energy and using mcAT. In part (b) we calculate how much energy 1 mole of 2-propanol would release. Part (c) asks about the effect of having a water/propanol mixture on the final temperature. Question 3 of the 2013 exam starts with stoichiometry - identifying the limiting reactant (5:30) and in part (b) the inconsistent trial. In (c) we are using again mCAT for our calculations. (D) and (e) have us calculate the enthalpy - in d) using experimental data, in (e) as enthalpy of formation. In (f) we are provided with an explanation for the discrepancy between (d) and (e) and are asked to explain if that could be the reason.Today's Question of the day is about Enthalpy. How do we calculate the enthalpy using bond enthalpies?A. bonds broken - bonds formed B. bonds formed - bonds broken C. bonds broken + bonds formed D. bonds formed + bonds brokenThank you for listening to The APsolute RecAP: Chemistry Edition!(AP is a registered trademark of the College Board and is not affiliated with The APsolute RecAP. Our episode starts with a clarification of using the terms thermodynamically favored vs spontaneous (1:19). To determine if a reaction is thermodynamically favored, we calculate Gibbs Free Energy using the Gibbs Free Energy of formation (2:45). Taking a closer look at Gibbs Free Energy we relate it to enthalpy and entropy and look at four different situations: exothermic and increase in entropy as well as endothermic and decrease in entropy don’t require calculations (3:37). But what if I have a reaction that is endothermic but increases entropy (5:46) or a reaction that is exothermic and decreases entropy (6:36)? The episode connects the mathematical sign of enthalpy to the heat being absorbed / released (1:39) and discusses the extensive character of enthalpy (2:06) as well the value of reversed reactions (2:23) and its dependency on the state (2:47). We also recap two approaches to calculate the enthalpy of a reaction: taking into account the bonds broken and bonds formed (3:06) as well as the standard enthalpies of formation (5:25). To clarify the calculations using the standard enthalpies of formation, we discuss the combustion of propane (7:10).Question (9:20): What is the law called that allows us to use the sum of enthalpy changes, independent of the steps?Thank you for listening to The APsolute RecAP: Chemistry Edition!(AP is a registered trademark of the College Board and is not affiliated with The APsolute RecAP. We are surrounded by exothermic and endothermic reactions. Episode 29 starts by describing the first law of Thermodynamics (1:39) as well as the terms system and surroundings (1:53) using the combustion of hydrogen as an example. We take a closer look at the bond breaking and bond formation of the combustion (2:20) and describe the energy diagrams for exothermic (2:51) and endothermic reactions (4:12). Hand warmers and cooling packs are great examples of exothermic and endothermic processes (4:47). But also purely physical changes, like water freezing or ice melting can be described as exothermic or endothermic (5:31).Question: In Chemistry, we use Enthalpy as a measurement of heat content. What is the sign for enthalpy for an endothermic reaction?Thank you for listening to The APsolute RecAP: Chemistry Edition!(AP is a registered trademark of the College Board and is not affiliated with The APsolute RecAP.
