Free tickets to see Judith at the Jazz Cafe London on Monday 24th of July. www.judithowen.nethttps://www.instagram.com/judithowenmusichttps://twitter.com/judithowenJudith Owen, a performer whose stylistic range spans rock, pop, classical, jazz, blues, and musical theatre, Owen is also a comedic actress and master storyteller. Born into an overtly musical Welsh family, Judith Owen grew up in London surrounded by classical music, ballet, theatre, and the fine arts. Owen was also exposed to many jazz icons and Broadway musicals that her parents loved (the mixture would become her signature sound). Owen quickly began performing at a variety of different venues around London. Her unique hybrid of classical/ jazz-influenced styled sound soon affirmed a regular slot at Ronnie Scotts. The latest iteration of Owen began with the arrival of her 13th album, Come On & Get It. The project is rooted in her childhood fascination with the jazz music of some of the ballsiest women of the Jazz and Blues world, including unsung trailblazers - Nellie Lutcher and Julia Lee - whom she discovered hidden on the shelves of her father's record collection. Captivated and enchanted by these "unapologetic" chanteuses of the 40's/50's (along with Pearl Bailey, Dinah Washington, Blossom Dearie, Peggy Lee, Julie London), Owen made it her mission to dig deep and find out more from both a musical and historical perspective. The album was recorded at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans - the city Owen now calls home - with a stellar cast of musicians, including Jason Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Charlie Gabriel, Nicholas Payton, David Torkanowsky, Kevin Louis, Evan Christopher, Ricardo Pascal and many more. The result is the most joyful, uplifting, and empowering project. With the London Times calling it ‘one of the most joyous releases of the year', and having garnered support from flagship Jazz radio stations Jazz FM in the UK, TSF in France, and plays across NPR stations in the US, the album has already reached over a million streams on Spotify. Owen kicked off 2023 performing to thrilled audiences in Europe with sold out shows in both Paris and Milan. Accompanied by her All Star New Orleans band ‘the Gentlemen Callers', Owen's live shows are an ‘exercise in confidence' as she “lights up the room with her red hair and her charisma.” “In a snap of her fingers, she takes her .. audience with her, and dictates the tempo to her musicians with a naturalness that is almost divine.” [Toute la Culture] Owen will be on the road for much of 2023 starting with shows in New Orleans this May, before taking a 5 night residency at The McKittrick in New York. She returns to Europe this summer for a series of festival dates and a headline show promoted by Jazz FM at London's Jazz Cafe, before touring across the US in the fall. Judith Owen is co-creator and co-host of the annual “Christmas Without Tears” charity variety show, alongside husband Harry Shearer, that has featured guests including Steven Merchant, Tim Minchin, Catherine O'Hara, and many others.  Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

In New Orleans, we're big on tradition. We believe that doing things the same way they've been done for generations keeps us connected to our history and maintains the grandness of the city that our forebears created. But there's a difference between tradition and habit. That difference can be knowledge.  For example, in the 1950's if you, your parents, and grandparents all smoked cigarettes, you might have called yourselves “a traditional tobacco family.” Now that we know smoking is the cause of seriously life-limiting medical conditions, you'd be more apt to describe that family as having a bad smoking habit. Which brings us to Mardi Gras. Wait, what? If you've lived in New Orleans for any time and you go to Mardi Gras parades, you've probably caught or thrown hundreds, if not thousands, of Mardi Gras beads. Mostly manufactured in China, these plastic beads are allegedly made from unregulated petroleum products and reportedly contain unhealthful levels of lead, arsenic, and other chemicals you don't want your kids anywhere near. Are Mardi Gras Beads as bad for you as cigarettes?! We put that question to Brett Davis. And we're betting you can guess the answer. Brett is Director of an organization called Grounds Krewe. Grounds Krewe's mission is to make New Orleans events  sustainable by diminishing waste and instituting recycling wherever possible. When it comes to Mardi Gras, Grounds Krewe's aim is to get us to replace plastic beads - and other toxic throws - with sustainable throws that are local, healthful, and as affordable as the ubiquitous, Chinese, plastic beads. Now let's move on to another mainstay of the New Orleans economy in which there's a blurred line between tradition and habit: the music business. The traditional way the music business is structured in New Orleans tends to financially benefit purveyors of alcohol more than the creators and performers of music. That's because we have a very robust live music culture that's centered mostly in bars. Unlike other music-centric cities - like Nashville and Austin - we don't have a similarly robust allied music economy. If you're a New Orleanian and you want a high-level career as a music business attorney, agent, manager, song writer or recording artist, you're in the same position locals in other businesses were in till recently. That is, you have to leave New Orleans. Think about that for a moment. You live in a city people come to specifically to hear music. But to be truly successful in the music business you have to leave. This tradition has been going on for some time. Louis Armstrong left New Orleans to make it. So did Lil Wayne. Winton Marsalis. Jon Batiste. Evan Christopher. Harry Connick Jr. Davell Crawford. Nicholas Payton. No Limit Records left. Cash Money Records left. Daniel Lanois, Lenny Kravitz, Trent Reznor, and Ray Davies from The Kinks all moved their music operations here, then left. You could argue that Winton Marsalis had to leave here for his prestigious job as Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Jon Batiste had to leave here to be music director on The Tonight Show. But that's the whole point. We're the birthplace of jazz but we don't have a jazz institute. And we don't have the infrastructure a national TV show needs to originate from here. At what point do we go from regarding this talent-emigration as a tradition, to calling it a habit - and do something about breaking it? Best-selling songwriter Jim McCormick knows as much as anybody about finding an answer to this question. Jim is a New Orleans native who left. He went to Nashville for 15 years. Then he came back. Jim has written a string of hit songs for artists like Jason Aldean, Tim McGraw, Kelly Clarkson, Brantley Gilbert, and many more. He's been nominated for a Grammy 5 times. He's had 3 songs hit number one on the Billboard country chart. And he's done much of that while living in Orleans parish. It's easy to keep doing things the way we've always done them. It feels good to label ourselves as the home of Mardi Gras, because Mardi Gras is amazing - if it doesn't bring a smile to your face probably nothing will. And we're justifiably proud of New Orleans being a place where you can hear enormously talented musicians all around town, every night.  None of this has to stop. But it can change. What's already good can be better. And what are now just hopes, dreams and visions can become reality. We can have a healthy Mardi Gras that's safe for everybody. And we can have a robust music business that makes money for musicians and everybody else in the chain of music marketing. But none of that is going to magically just happen. For things to change it takes people like Brett and Jim, giving us the benefit of their knowledge, experience, and passion for the city of New Orleans. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom. Evan Christopher: The Tradition is Eternally Modern

The Working Artist Project

In this weeks episode of the Working Artist Project, Darrian Douglas and Gregory Agid speak to clarinetist virtuoso, Evan Christopher Evan Christopher combines virtuosity, immaculate taste, and enthusiasm with a commitment to exploring the full range of possibilities in the New Orleans clarinet tradition. His highly personal brand of “contemporary, early jazz” strives to extend the legacies of early Creole clarinet heroes such as Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard and Omer Simeon. Critics remarking on Christopher's dynamic expressiveness have coined his style “close-encounter music” (NEW YORK TIMES) and have called his respect for the music traditions of New Orleans, “a triumph, joining the present seamlessly to a glorious past.” (THE OBSERVER, UK). His journey on Clarinet Road began in 1994, when he left his native California to join the New Orleans music community. Diverse freelance work included gigs with musicians such as Al Hirt and veterans of Preservation Hall to funk and brass bands including the Nightcrawlers and Galactic. But in 1996, he left for San Antonio, Texas to appear nightly for nearly three years with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band and record several of their public radio programs, Riverwalk: Live from the Landing. When Christopher returned to New Orleans in 2001, his published research on the New Orleans clarinet style initiated pursuit of a Master's degree in Musicology at Tulane University. He began touring internationally and producing his “Clarinet Road” series of CDs (STR Digital). In August 2005, when Federal levees failed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina decimating the city, Christopher left again for Paris at the invitation of the French Embassy's Cultural Services division, where he formed his group, Django à la Créole. This Europe-based quartet fused Gypsy Swing with Latin-tinged grooves of New Orleans and beyond and was distinguished for an acoustic intimacy paired with driving swing. Critics charmed by the group queried, “Is there a more graceful band at work at the moment?” (THE SUNDAY TIMES UK). Three CDs for Lejazzetal (London), in partnership with Frémeaux & Associés (Paris)—Django à la Créole (2007), Finesse (2010), and LIVE! (2014)—earned the group critical attention worldwide for its elegant character. As a composer, Christopher's original songs are the high point of acclaimed recordings including Delta Bound (Arbors, 2007) featuring pianist Dick Hyman, The Remembering Song (Arbors, 2010) featuring guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, his clarinet feature on the Grammy-winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra's Book One (2012) and his latest Clarinet Road CD, Bayou Chant & Other Textures (STR Digital, 2016). In July 2010, he had the honor to debut his Treat It Gentle Suite with the Minnesota Orchestra, which was the first concerto written for clarinet with band in the New Orleans style. Evan Christopher began his musical training on clarinet at age 11. In high school, he received the Louis Armstrong National Jazz Award and was one of the first graduates of the prestigious Idyllwild Arts Academy. He continued studies at the University of Southern California and graduated with honors from California State University, Long Beach. A brief teaching stint at the University of New Orleans saw the creation of a New Orleans music ensemble that performed with guest mentors such as Lucien Barbarin and Marcus Roberts. Since 2008, having returned once again to New Orleans, Christopher actively advocates for the cultural workforce and music education. He frequently tours with and records as a guest with forward-looking artists, while performances under his own name are often complemented by workshops and educational and community outreach. Occasional columns about the music scene and New Orleans culture written for NolaVie.com, evidence Evan's passion for the city's indigenous traditions.

In this week's episode, Kendall aka Kangore takes over DM duties as he runs a special one shot for the rest of the month.  We begin with Kragl and Odd Thrill being "dreamnapped" to the Inbetween with two strangers; Lumbardo the Golitah Rouge (played by Teague Parker) and Nephux the Belly-Dancing Tiefling (played by Evan Christopher). All four were summoned by the imprisoned god, Morpheus and are tasked into finding five keys to escape the strange plane they find themselves on. However, in doing so, they also free they're captor as well.  How will the players outwit the DM this week?  If you like Lumbardo aka Teague Parker, please check out his production company "Come Up Productions" ; they are creating free theatre for the public in the Greater Seattle area. He also teaches "Improv for Wellness" as private classes either for individuals or groups if your interested! Evan Christopher is a New Orleans based jazz clarinetist and composer. He is known for his unique style which blends contemporary jazz with the styles of early New Orleans jazz musicians. Dr. Nick sat down with Evan to see how a boy from Long Beach, California came to appreciate New Orleans style jazz, and how that appreciation grew into him becoming one of the most respected and lauded jazz musicians in New Orleans. Evan also talks about how being both the product of adoption and divorce has affected his current relationship, how he sort of fell into becoming an ambassador for New Orleans, and why being a musician is so important and not something to be taken lightly.

Evan Christopher is a New Orleans-based clarinetist and composer. His performances and recordings preserve and perpetuate the tradition of the New Orleans clarinet style, with influences from greats like Sidney Bechet, Omer Simeon and Barney Bigard. After meeting the clarinetist Tony Scott at a Rome night club, Evan Christopher asked him for an autograph. Scott wrote "Good luck on 'Clarinet Road.' Lots of curves!" Evan Christopher has been going down that road ever since. Gainesville, Georgia was a recent stop along the way; where this interview was recorded in the "before hours" piano bar of a hotel. We invite you to listen to an interview with a man who takes the calling of being a jazz musician very seriously, yet all the while remains humble and relatable.
