This year, I'm turning Buddhist, meditating with a sangha (a community of Buddhist practitioners), bowing in the morning, and taking lessons from Buddhist teachers. This happened because I started reading Billy Seol's Substack (https://substack.com/@julylifecoach), which he writes every single day (impressive!) I've come to consider Billy as a kind of spiritual god brother. In this deep dive into the intersection of Buddhism, coaching, and personal growth, Billy takes us through his journey of: Early experiences with depression Career in tech companies (Apple, Disney) Searching for a comprehensive approach to understanding life and ending sufferingEmbracing Buddhism as a practical life approach And we have a brainy debate about applying Buddhist principles to real-life workplace challenges for women and people of marginalized identities: Dealing with discrimination and marginalization Finding agency under challenging situations Doing hard things on purpose as a path to growth Mentioned in the podcast: Billy's website: https://www.julylifecoach.com/Zen And The Art of Dealing with Office Politics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcmoJuGwm4oHOME with Simone Seol (Billy's sister): https://www.simonegraceseol.com/come-homeText me your thoughts on this episode!Enjoy the show? That deep connection between rider and machine isn't just sentimentality—it's at the heart of Robert Persig's philosophical masterpiece, "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance."Today we're winding through the philosophical landscapes of Persig's influential work, exploring what it means to truly engage with our motorcycles and, by extension, with life itself. When we're cruising at 70mph and it suddenly feels like we're perfectly still while the world moves around us—that's Peace. That's presence. That moment when time disappears as you work on your bike late into the night, completely absorbed in the task—that's mindfulness.Persig suggests we can look at motorcycles (and life) in two ways: as fragmented collections of parts or as unified living systems. This perspective shapes everything—how we maintain our bikes, how we approach problems, and how we find harmony in a world that feels increasingly disconnected. We explore "gumption traps"—those frustrations like stripped screws or self-doubt that drain our enthusiasm—and the practices that restore our energy and focus. At its core, motorcycling offers us a path to that elusive peace of mind we're all searching for, if we approach the journey with awareness and care.Ready to find your Zen on two wheels?
I recently led a group session called Zen and the Art of Dealing with Office Politics, where I helped professionals—especially women and underrepresented folks—navigate the messiness of workplace dynamics with more calm and clarity. We kicked off with a guided brain exercise to shift out of high-frequency beta brain waves (you know, that anxious, go-go-go energy) and into a slower, more grounded alpha state. It's a small shift that opens up space for creativity and better problem-solving.Then I walked folks through three key ideas:1. Power DifferentialWe named the real (or perceived) authority gaps in the workplace—how power plays out, and why it matters when you're trying to be heard or make change.2. Conflict StylesUsing the Thomas-Kilman model, I explained the five common ways people handle conflict:CompeteCollaborateCompromiseAvoidAccommodateI talked about how being “conflict flexible” is a leadership superpower—especially if you're someone who usually avoids or accommodates by default.3. Personal InterpretationWe explored how your story about what's happening can either fuel stress or open up new choices. The way you interpret workplace friction directly impacts how you feel and what you do next. All throughout, I brought in Zen metaphors and references from Asian culture to drive the point home: You don't have to control every outcome. The goal is to stay present, stay adaptable, and not let office politics hijack your peace.Download the companion guide HERE.Watch the full replay on YouTube HERE. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is the seminal motorcycle book. And its most misunderstood. Author Mark Richardson, who's book Zen and Now is an homage to Zen and the Art, gives us the lowdown on Robert Pirsig's masterpiece and chronicles the troubled life of an author Richardson calls a “genius.”
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig. It's a peculiar book, especially for a bestseller. Not a lot of it is actually about zen or motorcycle maintenance, it combines a travelogue, a father/son story, and philosophical musings, and the structure of its narration makes it hard to follow. Thus, it's the kind of book people often buy, start, and then put down without finishing. That's initially what happened to Mark Richardson, an author and automotive journalist who was born in the UK but has lived most of his life in Canada. But when the book finally clicked for Mark, he was so inspired by it that he actually undertook Pirsig's motorcycle pilgrimage himself. Mark shares that story in Zen and Now, which intersperses stories from his own road trip with an exploration of Pirsig's life and famous book.If you've wanted to read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, but haven't been able to get into it, today Mark will offer an introduction to what it's all about. We discuss Pirsig's ideas on the metaphysics of quality and our relationship to technology, and how he tried to combine the ethos of Eastern and Western thought into a unified philosophy of living. We also get into why Mark wanted to recreate Pirsig's road trip, the joys of traveling by motorcycle, and what Mark learned along the way.Resources Related to the PodcastZen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values by Robert M. The girls in the boat are heading to Paris and Folsom's Michelle Sechser has Lake Natoma to thank. Sechser is a two-time Olympic rower in lightweight double sculls. She fell in love with the sport at age 14 after following her older sister to Capital Crew. That rowing club is based at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma and has produced multiple Olympic champions. "When I started at Capital Crew, never in a million years that I think I will be a two-time Olympian," Sechser said. She started seriously pursuing the National Rowing Team after grad school and came in 5th at the Tokyo Olympics. Lightweight sculls feature athletes much smaller than those found on the eight-person boats. That leads to races being won (or lost) in the blink of an eye. At 37, Sechser is older than a lot of rowers. She'd already planned on Paris being her last Olympics. Then the International Olympic Committee announced her event would be dropped from the Olympic lineup after 2024. Sechser predicts an epic final saying, "I know every girl on that starting line will be having the exact same thought, which is I've got nothing to lose, cause this is it. It's all or nothing." On this Dying to Ask: The Zen of rowing How rowing with a partner is like being in a marriage How to build physical and mental endurance and push through boredom

Imagine one moment of perfect calm. You feel the air move around you, free from gravity. In the blink of an eye, everything becomes clear as water. It would be beautiful – if only you weren't in the midst of a violent highside.Racing means crashing, something Mat and Peter are all too familiar with. But what happens when a rider loses control? What goes through your mind in that moment between error and violent consequence, and what does an engineer see when a bike goes flying in ways it was never meant to? What does it mean to learn the limits of your bike the hard way, and how can someone like Marc Márquez both have the most wins and the most crashes? This week, we throw all caution to the wind as we look at why riders crash. With big thanks as always to Brad Baloo from The Next Men and Gentleman's Dub Club, who wrote our theme song. “Quality...you know what it is, yet you don't know what it is. But that's self-contradictory. But some things are better than others, that is, they have more quality. But when you try to say what the quality is, apart from the things that have it, it all goes poof! There's nothing to talk about. But if you can't say what Quality is, how do you know what it is, or how do you know that it even exists? If no one knows what it is, then for all practical purposes it doesn't exist at all. But for all practical purposes it really does exist.” Welcome back to another episode of Made You Think! In this episode, we're discussing Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig. Join us as we ride through the intersections of philosophy, a father and son motorcycle trip across America, and the pursuit of Quality. We cover a wide range of topics including: Different learning styles and the value of hands-on experience Exploring the elusive concept of Quality Reflections on the narrative and philosophy of the book Overcoming gumption traps and staying enthusiastic How the journey is just as important as the destination And much more. Neil connects his college experience to the book, describing the contrast between theoretical vs. applied learning. (5:35) Different learning styles, emphasizing hands-on experience, and the importance of practical understanding over theory. (10:34) Why is it that not every great athlete can go on to become a great coach? It all comes down to being able to apply and share your knowledge in a given setting. (13:50) Sharing our thoughts on how the story was written, the narrative of the motorcycle trip, and how the sequel compares to this story. (19:34)The author opens the door to a variety of ideas such as learning to be in the present moment and how to focus on one thing at a time. Though Pirsig is intuitive across several domains, we find that he struggles to put these concepts into words. (24:03) While on a trip with his son and another couple, the author reflects on flashbacks in his life, including the treatment of his past insanity. Through fixing the bike and traveling across the country, he learns many valuable lessons and philosophies along the way. (29:14) We briefly discuss the sequel where Pirsig highlights William James Sidis, known for his incredibly high IQ and profound ideas on the origin of life. (33:34) Comparing bike riding to a full-body meditation. Each limb has a specific task to operate the bike, and you have to be focused on the road in front of you, truly bringing yourself to the present moment. (35:01) Nat, Neil, and Adil ponder the concept of Quality, its connection to science, spirituality, and the importance of peace of mind. Quality is all about applying yourself and your senses in the present moment, and being one with what you are doing. (41:45) Nat shares his perspective on the book's cognitive challenges and the reconciliation of theory and practice within the book. (46:09) One unique factor about this book is that it doesn't necessarily mean to give you a conclusive solution at the end. It's all about enjoying the journey, and being okay with the fact that you may not have arrived anywhere by the end of the book. (49:44) Appreciating the book's humor, comical dialogues, and character depth, with a desire for more insight into the minds of the minor characters. (52:56) It can be very difficult to get started on any project, especially when you think of the whole scope of what you're about to do. In 2013, when Florida lawyer TJ Fraser set out to find a law practice management solution for his firm, he tested just about every product on the market, he says, but he could not find one that solved the problems he encountered in his day-to-day practice. So, rather than keep looking, he and his team decided to build the solution they needed for themselves. By 2018, they had dubbed the software ZenCase, and in 2021, after continuing to develop and refine it, they migrated their first 50-plus user law firm onto the platform and officially launched it commercially to the legal market at large. On today's LawNext, host Bob Ambrogi is joined by Fraser, who is now the CEO of ZenCase, and Olivia Mockel, its president and COO. Mockel recently moved to ZenCase after several years in leadership roles at other practice management companies, including most recently as CEO of PCLaw | Time Matters, a joint venture between LEAP and LexisNexis. So what makes ZenCase different from other practice management platforms and what types of law firms is it suited for? In today's episode, we'll hear from Fraser and Mockel about all that and more, including how they are incorporating generative AI and their plans for future development. Cost and efficiency can't be the only things that matter. Sometimes you need to take the meandering route. There might be some concerns with seeing the raw data, but trust that Jake be there with his expertise and keen eye to help you navigate any issues. Like your good doctor, Jake has seen it all before. With his easygoing ways and subtle suggestions he reminds you that your goals are aligned here. This week while he is working his way around Pitti Uomo in Florence, it seemed appropriate to share a conversation we had about style, tailoring and what it's like to still do things in the traditions of the past. Schuyler and Jeff chat United's unpredictable form, Arsenal's opportunity to move up the league table, and the impact of multiple midseason international tournaments. Also, they spend 10 minutes determining if Schuyler's microphone is on. Typical.
This is the third-time return of one of the great thinkers and educators in human performance today, Nick Winkleman. Nick currently serves as the head of athletic performance & science for the Irish Rugby Football Union. I recently bumped into him at a Perform Better Summit in Orlando, Florida where he and I were speaking. He was presenting a topic seemingly out of context for the environment entitled "Zen and the Art of Coaching." I was intrigued and spent 75 minutes listening to a man talk about a subject I knew little about, but found myself moved to better understand.Later sitting by the pool, we further got into a deep discussion, and I invited him to come back to the LYM podcast to enlighten our listenership with his insights. Nick has been through a great deal of change, some unexpected, and some expected in recent years. His faith has helped him navigate this change, and he felt moved to share what he has learned through this unique presentation, and now in this wonderful conversation. What is the intersection between psychotherapy and Buddhism? For decades, Mark Epstein, MD, a practicing Buddhist and psychiatrist, has deeply explored how Buddhist philosophy can be integrated into therapy to help patients heal from trauma. His key insight is that Buddhism grants us the wisdom to reshape our relationships with our personal stories, through which we conceptualize and contextualize our emotions and identities. Dr. Epstein is the author of Thoughts Without a Thinker, The Trauma of Everyday Life, Advice Not Given, The Zen of Therapy: Uncovering a Hidden Kindness in Life, and other books. Over the course of our conversation, Dr. Epstein shares how he discovered Buddhist meditative and mindfulness practices during his formative years, how he helps patients reframe their understanding of suffering, and what it's like to be allowed into the most vulnerable, intricate, and even spiritual spaces in the minds and hearts of other people. In this episode, we discuss:2:12 - Dr. Epstein's reluctant path to medicine after growing up as the child of a doctor10:08 - The lessons Buddhism has taught Dr. Esptein about himself and his relationships with others and the world17:12 - Differences between “medical materialists” and “medical humanists”19:33 - How Dr. Epstein's humanistic views of medicine have affected his approach to treating patients 23:45 - An overview of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis28:12 - How Dr. Epstein's approach to working with patients differs from other psychiatrists due to Buddhist influences36:54 - The extent to which Dr. Epstein's patients are aware of the source of his approach and techniques39:42 - How Dr. Epstein grapples with the high stakes involved when treating the mental suffering of his patients46:12 - Dr. Epstein's advice for medical students and clinicians on managing the mental distress of patientsDr. Mark Epstein is the author of many books, including:The Zen of Therapy (2022)Advice Not Given: A Guide to Getting Over Yourself (2018)The Trauma of Everyday Life (2013)Going On Being (2008)Psychotherapy Without the Self, Open to Desire (2008)Going to Pieces Without Falling Apart (1998)Thoughts Without a Thinker (1995)Visit our website www.TheDoctorsArt.com where you can find transcripts of all episodes. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, rate, and review our show, available for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Does picking the right investments, avoiding debt, or saving for goals stress you out? To most of us -- even the best savers -- stress is a reality, and just part of the "game" of money. Michael Gilmore, the Seven Dollar Millionaire, says that it doesn't have to be that way. Today he's on the show to teach us how Zen philosophy can help us relax, unwind, and still reach our financial goals (and maybe while living a better life). In our headline segment, there's LOTS of money sitting in cash right now, according to new data out. We'll share why sitting in cash might be a huge mistake, and also why trying to time "the right investment" is equally as dangerous. Plus, in our TikTok minute, we'll share a video shared by a listener about ONE financial measuring stick you might not have considered. Would it make sense to pay more attention? We'll share. Of course, Doug shares trivia and there's much, much more.
