The Deal with Alex Rodriguez and Jason Kelly
World Cup 2026 Recap

The Deal with Alex Rodriguez and Jason Kelly

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 23, 2026 49:39 Transcription Available

The 2026 World Cup is done and the numbers are astounding. FIFA reportedly expects to bring in $15 billion in revenue, blowing past their original projection of $12 billion. This number isn’t surprising considering that almost 7 million people attended the tournament’s 104 games and 60 million people in North America tuned into Sunday’s final. In this episode of The Deal, we dig into the stories beyond these record-smashing numbers. First up, Jason talks to Fox Soccer broadcaster Melissa Ortiz about how this World Cup compared to the others she has covered as a broadcaster and played in as a member of the Colombian national team. She also explains what made the officiating so frustrating and why she is already looking forward to next summer’s women’s World Cup. Next, Jason is joined by Bloomberg News sports reporter and Business of Sports co-host Vanessa Perdomo about what makes this World Cup such an incredible business story and why FIFA will likely be eager to host another major tournament in the U.S. She also gives her take on how the World Cup’s momentum will impact the MLS and predicts the future of hydration breaks.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Shakira

Shakira Biography Flash a weekly Biography. Shakira's week has been a tight mix of global spectacle, music-business momentum, and the kind of personal glimpses that quietly shape her long-term story. The biggest biographical headline is her continuing role as the musical face of the 2026 FIFA World Cup: AOL Entertainment reports that Dai Dai, her official World Cup anthem with Burna Boy, is now being heavily profiled for its meaning and positioning in the tournament, underscoring that Shakira remains the go-to artist for football's global soundtrack and cementing yet another era-defining World Cup chapter in her career. The song's rollout is being amplified by the official Dai Dai music video on YouTube, which has drawn reaction content and breakdowns in the last couple of days, a sign of strong engagement and likely long-term impact on her catalog and streaming presence. On the public-appearance front, Fox Soccer highlights Shakira's backstage reaction while celebrating Colombia's victory during her concert schedule, a short but revealing moment that blends her national pride with her ongoing status as a touring global star. Social media clips on TikTok via ESPN FC also show her son Milan rattling off every World Cup champion, a family-football crossover that feeds the narrative of Shakira as both global icon and engaged mother passing down the sport's mythology to her kids. Business and image have also been part of this week's story. A Spanish-language celebrity page Upsocl Celebs on Facebook reports that Shakira recently addressed online chatter claiming she uses a body double, explicitly denying the rumor and “clearing up doubts about her appearance.” That move is small in day-to-day terms but significant for her long-term biography, reinforcing her preference to confront conspiracy-style speculation head-on and control her public image in the age of deepfakes and viral rumor. On the music side, the SPINALL remix of Dai Dai is circulating on YouTube, expanding the anthem's footprint into club and DJ culture, a business-savvy way of stretching a single World Cup track into multiple markets. Meanwhile, Instagram chatter about her distinctive nails, noted in a widely shared reel analyzing “Las uñas de Shakira,” keeps her fashion and beauty influence in circulation; it's minor gossip on its face but fits a decades-long pattern of Shakira's aesthetic choices becoming micro-trends online. As for fresh romance or relocation rumors, such as YouTube claims that Shakira has “returned to Miami and left all the artists in an awkward situation,” these are circulating on smaller celebrity-news channels without confirmation from major outlets or Shakira's own accounts, so they remain speculative at this stage rather than solid biographical fact. Thanks for joining this Shakira Biography Flash. Please subscribe so you never miss an update on Shakira, and search the term Biography Flash for more great biographies. Thanks for listening. In this episode, Alex starts by worrying about how the United States doesn't appear ready to host a FIFA World Cup in a few years. As he has been watching both the Euro Cup and the American Cup, Alex has noticed that the Fox Soccer crew has not only had bad (and dumb) takes, but also just seems lackluster in understanding the nuances of the game. He cites an article in the Guardian that explains it all. For the rest of the episode, Alex looks at how recent elections in the UK and France can send useful messages to Democrats/centrist movements in the world (especially the United States). In both the UK and France, the far-right was held back by moderated left-leaning parties and uniquely built coalitions that served as bulwarks against extremism. Alex worries that as Joe Biden and his allies are struggling to have tough conversations around his ability to run for four more years, some of the political dynamics in Europe can serve as both warnings and advice.

Stu Holden is FOX Soccer's lead analyst. He joined the Press Pass Podcast to discuss Saturday's Copa América final between Argentina and Brazil, which naturally features two of the world's most exciting players in Lionel Messi and Neymar. Stu gives his analysis and prediction for the big game while taking a step back and evaluating what a Copa championship would do for the legacies of both international superstars.    Stu also took the time to talk about his transition from on-field play to the life of a broadcaster; he played soccer at the professional level both in the MLS and Premier League for nearly a decade. He discussed the differences between the two experiences, the advice he'd give to athletes-turned-broadcasters, and some of his greatest hits working as a broadcaster for FOX.

With NFL training camps less than one week away, Rich Eisen and the podcast crew fire back up the microphones for an all new edition of the #REP. The guys touch on a few of the storylines that have been circulating in recent weeks before welcoming back in-studio VP of production for Fox Soccer, Jason Wormser. “The Worm” shares his final thoughts on what was a brilliant 2014 FIFA World Cup that concluded on Sunday with Germany taking home the hardware. Up next, Eagles Pro Bowl running back LeSean McCoy dials into the program. McCoy enjoyed the best season of his brilliant young career in 2013, rushing for a league leading 1,607 yards and totaling 2,146 yards from scrimmage. This was also good for best in the NFL. Voted the fifth-best player in the National Football League on the “Top 100 Players of 2014″ countdown list, “Shady” talks with Rich about the loss of wide receiver DeSean Jackson to the division rival Redskins, the addition of the versatile Darren Sproles to the Eagles backfield and if the Eagles can remain atop the NFC East in 2014.
