Within 48 hours, the video amassed nearly half a million likes. Stablecoins zijn uitgegroeid tot een van de belangrijkste bouwstenen van de cryptomarkt. Maar wat zijn het eigenlijk? Kort gezegd: digitale munten die gekoppeld zijn aan een andere waarde, meestal een traditionele munt als de Amerikaanse dollar. Bekende namen als de USDT, USDC en Dai (DAI) proberen op verschillende manieren een vaste waarde te behouden. Dat gebeurt vaak door echte dollars als onderpand aan te houden, of door slimme algoritmes die vraag en aanbod reguleren. Opvallend is dat bijna alle grote stablecoins zich koppelen aan de dollar. Andere valuta, zoals de euro of de yen, zijn nauwelijks terug te vinden. Dat komt deels door de dominante positie van de dollar in de wereldhandel, maar ook omdat veel crypto-innovatie uit de VS komt. Die dominantie is niet onopgemerkt gebleven. Overheden werken inmiddels aan eigen digitale munten, zoals de digitale euro of digitale dollar. Toch lijken stablecoins voor te lopen op die plannen. En dat gaat verder dan alleen fiatgeld. Er wordt ook geëxperimenteerd met koppelingen aan grondstoffen of zelfs aandelen. Maar het gros van de stablecoins blijft gericht op de dollar, omdat die het grootste bereik en de meeste liquiditeit biedt. Stablecoins hebben verschillende functies. Ze worden veel gebruikt in handel: als tussenstation om snel van de ene naar de andere munt te gaan. Maar ze worden ook ingezet voor betalingen, als opslag van waarde, en steeds vaker door institutionele partijen als brug naar de cryptomarkt. Het gebruik is de afgelopen jaren geëxplodeerd, vooral omdat stablecoins relatief eenvoudig en snel te gebruiken zijn. Dat roept de vraag op of juist deze munten, en niet bitcoin, de echte betaalrevolutie van crypto aanvoeren. Beleggers kunnen daarvan profiteren door te investeren in de infrastructuur rond stablecoins – van uitgevende bedrijven tot onderliggende technologie. Toch zijn er risico’s. Dat bleek pijnlijk bij TerraUSD, een algoritmische stablecoin die in 2022 instortte. Maar ook centraal beheerde stablecoins kenden problemen, zoals USDC dat tijdelijk de koppeling verloor na problemen bij een bankpartner. Het verschil tussen algoritmische en onderpandgestuurde modellen is cruciaal. En ook de vraag naar decentralisatie speelt mee. De meeste stablecoins worden beheerd door centrale partijen, die soms zelfs bankachtige functies uitvoeren. Juist daarom komen er steeds meer regels. In Europa geldt inmiddels de MiCAR-regelgeving, waarin ook eisen aan stablecoins zijn opgenomen. In de VS werkt de overheid aan de zogeheten GENIUS-wet, die onder andere toezicht op stablecoin-uitgevers moet regelen. Die regulering kan helpen om de risico’s te verkleinen, maar roept ook vragen op: wat betekent dit voor plannen rond een digitale euro of dollar? Bedrijven zien in elk geval brood in stablecoins. Niet alleen Amerikaanse fintechs, maar ook Europese banken ontwikkelen hun eigen varianten. Zelfs Big Tech flirtte al met het idee, zoals Facebook destijds met Diem (voorheen Libra). De interesse is logisch: stablecoins zijn hét toonbeeld van tokenisatie. Inmiddels zijn er ook rentedragende stablecoins, en kijken partijen naar getokeniseerde aandelen en banktegoeden. Stablecoins zouden daarmee wel eens de eerste stap kunnen zijn in een veel bredere digitale transformatie van geld en vermogen.
