It's May 2025 — and what a month for Status Quo fans! Not only is the 8-disc expanded edition of Quo Live dropping, but The Way We Were – Volume One by Francis Rossi is also on the way! This collection brings together demos recorded over the past 25 years; All written by the songwriting team of Francis Rossi and Bob Young— many of which became Quo album tracks, singles, or appeared on Francis's 2010 solo album One Step at a Time. Even more exciting: several songs in this collection have never been released in any form before! In this episode, I share my thoughts on the second teaser track, Money Don't Matter — a song that originally appeared on Quo's Heavy Traffic album in 2002 and later featured on the Driving to Glory compilation.I talk about how the demo compares to the final version, how it captures the essence of the song in a raw and relaxed way, and why it holds such strong personal memories for me. Plus, I touch on what Francis himself had to say about how the demo made him reconsider the finished track.

In this episode of The Quo-Cast, Jamie Dyer discusses a Rick Parfitt-penned song that he believes could have been a huge hit had things been handled differently. 1985 was the year Status Quo played Live Aid was also the time the band experimented on various solo projects. Francis Rossi teamed up with Bernie Frost to release several singles including "Modern Romance" and "Jealousy" with a backing band of Pete Kircher and Andy Bown. Rick Parfitt entered the studio with producer Pip Williams to work on his solo album, where he worked alongside bassist John 'Rhino' Edwards and drummer Jeff Rich for the first time. The song "Halloween" was originally recorded for Rick Parfitt's unreleased solo album "Recorded Delivery". It was later repurposed as the B-side to the 1988 single Who Gets the Love, which was a minor hit. It was later included on Parfitt's posthumous solo album "Over and Out". In this episode of The Quo-Cast: A Status Quo Fan Podcast, Jamie Dyer gives his thoughts on Aquostic: Stripped Bare, which turns 10 this year. Aquostic (Stripped Bare) was released in 2014 and was produced by Mike Paxman. The album features acoustic reworkings of some of Status Quo's greatest hits and fan favourites. The lineup on this album consisted of Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, John 'Rhino' Edwards, Andrew Bown, and Leon Cave. The album marked a departure from the band's signature electric style. Aquostic was a commercial success, peaking at No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart. The album's success led to a series of live acoustic shows, including a memorable performance at London's Roundhouse for BBC Radio 2. Happy New Year! This is the first episode of The Quo-Cast for 2024. In this episode, Jamie Dyer reviews the documentary spoof The Kemps: All Gold, which aired on BBC2 over Christmas. It featured a cameo appearance from Status Quo's Francis Rossi, who played a fictionalized version of himself. Jamie is joined by a special guest to discuss why Rossi's appearance is significant, and how his public image has changed over the last 12 months. The Kemps: All Gold is the sequel to the 2020 mockumentary The Kemps: All True, it follows Gary and Martin Kemp over a year, and documents the antics they find themselves in. Written and directed by Rhys Thomas, it has a narrative connection to the world of Thomas' Brian Pern series of spoof music documentaries.
Status Quo are one of Britain's longest-running bands, staying together for over six decades. During much of that time, the group was only successful in the U.K., where they racked up a string of Top Ten singles over the decades. In America, the Quo were ignored after they abandoned psychedelia for heavy boogie rock in the early '70s. Before that, the band managed to reach number 12 in the U.S. with the psychedelic classic "Pictures of Matchstick Men" Following that single, the group suffered a lean period for the next few years before the band members decided to refashion themselves as a hard rock boogie band in 1970. The Quo have basically recycled the same simple boogie on each successive album and single, yet their popularity has never waned. If anything, their very predictability ensured the group a large following. The guys started out as The Spectres with Francis Rossi (vocals, guitar) Alan Lancaster (bass) drummer John Coghlan and organist Roy Lynes. The group added Rick Parfitt (guitar, vocals) and changed its name to Status Quo. Throughout the '70s, each album Status Quo released went into the Top Five, while their singles -- including the number one "Down Down" (1974), "Roll Over Lay Down" (1975), "Rain" (1976), "Wild Side of Life" (1976), and a cover of John Fogerty's "Rockin' All Over the World" (1977) - consistently hit the Top Ten. Since they were experiencing a great deal of success, they didn't change their sound at all, they just kept churning out the same heavy boogie. John Coghlan left Status Quo in 1981 – during rehearsals for the band's 20th Anniversary album in Switzerland. Tensions had developed and John left to form his own band. By 1983 his own band featured a selection of respected musicians, comprising; guitarist Ray Majors (ex-Mott and British Lions), bass player Ian Ellis (ex-Savoy Brown and Steamhammer), and keyboard player Jeff Banister. That same year John Coghlan teamed up with a trio of other well-known musicians called the Rockers. The four man line up boasted John on drums, Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy's frontman) on bass, guitar and vocals, Chas Hodges (from Chas ‘n' Dave) on keyboards and Roy Wood (ex Wizzard, ELO and The Move) on guitar and vocals. Coghlan continued to tour regularly playing with various musicians. He began working with Alan Lancaster in Australia who was putting together a band with Australian guitarist John Brewster, called the Bombers. John worked with The Bombers for a year but returned to the UK in 1990. John Coghlan started working with his own band, John Coghlan's Quo, during the late 1990s. By that time, Status Quo had scored 50 British hit singles, which was more than any other band in rock & roll history at the time. This week John Coghlan joins us to explain what those heady days were like, why he left the band in 1981and what life holds for him today. With that in mind, it's possible that the tune is a fever dream fantasy of familicide, with the wah-wah parts imitating his newborn baby crying ... who knew that there could be such a push-and-pull between the domestic and the psychedelic? (- The Beatles, probably) ... The second snapshot is by The Invaders, from South Africa (1:30:01). This one has a much dryer sound than the original, but it's punched up with some punchy trumpet that wah-wah pioneer Clyde ("Don't Call Me Claude") McCoy would love! The third in this week's triptych is the band with the longest name we've ever featured: Charlie y Manny Con Otto de Rojas Y Su Conjunto (1:49:41). Is that a harmonica in there? A chunky drum sound and some cool "sliding" effects in the organ and bass keeps the picture sharp. Do dee do dee do!!

Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake and Richard are back with another episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Brian bemoans the software industry as he has technical issues and it fires him into rant mode. Wampler made a pedal once that people thought was too weird for us, Brian tries to relate this to cars, and the conversation drifts into hillbilly territory…Richard discovers that Brian, and Blake, have never heard of stadium dad rock giants, Status Quo, and is audibly shook by this telecaster based injustice. We discuss the infamous telecaster mods of Francis Rossi and then Brian reveals that the team have been working hard on some new products before he fantasises about breadboarding in Starbucks.Blake gives us an update on his Rickenbacker to vintage Orange cab trade, Richard admits he not really into vintage amps so the guys pour well deserved scorn on his silly views. They then have a little bit of a look at Orange as a brand and Brian lowers the tone and reveals why he is the worst medical doctor to have. How do you approach learning? Do online methods and apps work better for you than say traditional sheet music or tab ? The guys have different views on how they take in info and which learning style works for them. Brian then declares victory on the music taste front when Richard confesses to downloading Skid Row and Dokken.ASMR for electronics nerds, mean comments, Dad metal, Bigsby and Grunge pedals, did we mention Patreon? Meet Lee Lee is a singer-songwriter and was the Drummer / Singer in a band called EastEnd Lee recorded “This is me ” with Status Quo frontman Francis Rossi who produced and co-wrote 3 of his tracks. Lee has been a cabbie 3 years. This is his story…
Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, was brought up in Skewen, a small village near Swansea. She grew up to become one of Wales' best known performers, achieving chart success all over the world. She is recognised for her distinctive husky voice, and a long list of hit singles including Total Eclipse of the Heart, It's a Heartache, Holding Out for a Hero, Lost in France, More Than a Lover, Bitterblue and If I Sing You a Love Song. In her 50-year career, Bonnie has performed for audiences in countries across the world, and she has enjoyed critical acclaim for her recent albums Rocks and Honey and Between The Earth and the Stars. Her latest album The Best Is Yet to Come – due for release on 26 February 2021 – is a contemporary approach to the sounds and styles of 80s pop rock. As a teenager, Bonnie was influenced by the biggest female voices of the 60s, especially Tina Turner and Janis Joplin. After spending several years performing in local pubs and clubs around South Wales, first with Bobbie Wayne & the Dixies and later with her own band, Imagination, Bonnie was discovered by talent scout Roger Bell in 1974. RCA Records launched Bonnie's recording career two years later with her debut single My! My! Honeycomb. Her breakthrough hit was Lost in France, written by her managers Ronnie Scott and Steve Wolfe. The single peaked at no. 9 in the UK, and spent six months in the German charts. After enjoying further success with subsequent singles More Than a Lover and Heaven, Bonnie finally broke into the Billboard charts with It's a Heartache, which reached no. 3 in the United States. Of the four albums that Bonnie recorded for RCA, Natural Force was the most successful, selling over half a million copies in the United States. Ready to embrace the new decade, Bonnie moved to CBS Records to work with Jim Steinman in the early 80s. Their fateful collaboration resulted in the groundbreaking international hit Total Eclipse of the Heart, a multi-platinum selling single that still enjoys cultural relevance in the 21st century. It is lifted from her fifth album, Faster Than the Speed of Night, which saw Tyler become to first British female artist to make her debut appearance on the UK Albums Chart at no. 1. During the 80s, she recorded several songs for movie soundtracks, including the UK no. 2 hit Holding Out for a Hero for Footloose, and the Grammy-nominated single Here She Comes for a restoration of Metropolis. Hide Your Heart became Bonnie's third album for CBS, produced by Desmond Child. It features several songs that became hits for other artists, including The Best for Tina Turner and Save Up All Your Tears for Cher. In the 90s, Bonnie signed with German label Hansa Records for three albums. The first, Bitterblue, rivaled the success of her career-defining album Faster Than the Speed of Night in some European countries, earning 4x Platinum status in Norway. Her follow-up albums Angel Heart and Silhouette in Red also became Platinum records in parts of Europe. Bonnie reunited with Jim Steinman in 1995 after signing with EastWest Records. She recorded epic cover versions of Making Love (Out of Nothing At All) and Two Out of Three Ain't Bad for her album Free Spirit, which featured the work of top producers including Humberto Gatica, Christopher Neil and David Foster. Her second record with EastWest, titled All in One Voice, arrived shortly before the new milennium. The celtic-influenced pop album was recorded in Dublin and Hamburg, and features a haunting cover of “I Put a Spell on You”, produced by Mike Batt. In the early 2000s, Bonnie signed a one-off deal with EMI to record Heart Strings, an album of classic rock covers featuring her touring band and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Bonnie recorded her next two pop-rock albums, Simply Believe and Wings, with producers Jean Lahcene and Stuart Emerson. Bonnie received an ECHO Music Prize for ‘Best International Pop/Rock Female Artist' in 1994. She has also received three Goldene Europa awards, three Grammy and BRIT nominations, two AMA nominations and one ACM nomination. She is the recipient of an honorary degree from Swansea University, and she was presented with a Gold Badge from BASCA (now The Ivors Academy) in 2013. Bonnie has represented the United Kingdom at two international music contests. In 1979, she won the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival with her song ‘Sitting On the Edge of the Ocean'. After competing in the Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Believe in Me' in 2013, Bonnie picked up two ESC Radio Awards for ‘Best Song' and ‘Best Singer'. Over and above the timeless tracks that made her a household name, Bonnie has proven her versatility by enjoying a bilingual number one album in France, and performing duets – past collaborators include Vince Gill, Cher, Fabio Jr., Shakin' Stevens and Todd Rundgren. In 2013, she released her country-influenced album Rocks and Honey, recorded at the legendary Blackbird Studios in Nashville with David Huff. In 2019, she released Between the Earth and the Stars, another contemporary record with nods to past moments from her 50-year career. She recorded it with David Mackay, who produced her first two albums back in the 70s. Songwriters include long-time collaborators Kevin Dunne, Brian Cadd and Stuart Emerson, with new contributions from Sir Barry Gibb and Amy Wadge. The album also boasts three exciting duets with Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard and Francis Rossi. Her follow-up album The Best Is Yet to Come will arrive in February 2021. The release was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but now Bonnie feels ready to celebrate: “I hope these new songs will lift your spirits. I am so happy and proud of this new album. It simply rocks and brings a smile to my face every time I put it on. The moment we can get back on stage and see your smiling faces will be extra special. I promise the best IS yet to come.“

In this Headliner Icons podcast we catch up with the extremely entertaining Status Quo frontman Francis Rossi about his extraordinary career so far: we delve into the songs that catapulted the band on a global scale, and chat about how he has written his autobiography as honestly as he could. We also reflect on how the live events industry might look when it finally finds its feet again - and why live touring may never be the same again.
For 25 years, Alan Lancaster was bassist with one of the most successful rock bands of all time. A band he founded with school friend Francis Rossi and one which enjoyed multi-platinum album sales and stadium gigs. But an acrimonious split after Status Quo opened the stage at Live Aid in 1985 left Alan alone in the wilderness, trying to navigate his way through the music business jungle. Alan tells me about how he survived rejection, playing with the Bombers and the Party Boys, and what it was like to be part of the biggest musical event the world has ever witnessed. Track: Is This The Way To Say Goodbye (Bombers)

In this episode of The Quo-Cast, Jamie Dyer reads the latest Status Quo announcements from Rhino's Revenge and Francis Rossi.
If my full interviews are like albums then look upon this as a single! For nearly a decade at the start of the 21st century, I interviewed many of the most famous musicians in the world, for a radio series called Under The Influence. Taking my cue from the fact that hearing two particular Elvis songs when I was a child - I tell that tale in the intro to the podcast - changed my life, changed it utterly, I always kicked off each show by asking a musician if she or he had a similar memory that maybe led to an epiphany and to them wanting to make music. So, now, alongside my uploading already four of the full shows - Christy Moore, Elvis Costello, Micky Dolenz, and the other Joe Jackson- I have decided to "release" these "singles" which focus on the song that became a clarion call of sorts to the musician in question.

June 2020: Little did drummer John Coghlan know when that he joined Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in the newly-formed band The Spectres back in 1962 his life was on a course for rock stardom. The addition of Rick Parfitt, a change of name and touring strategy later, chart-topping success beckoned for Status Quo which became one of the most successful rock bands of all time. With over 60 UK chart hits, twenty-two reaching the Top 10, they appeared on Top Of The Pops more than any other band. Opening Live Aid at Wembley Stadium in 1985 and achieving a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, Status Quo have written their place in music history. #JohnCoghlan #StatusQuo #JohnCoghlansQuo #rock #covid19
It was such a pleasure sitting down Status Quo's own Francis Rossi for a conversation. The interview took place in the American hotel in Amsterdam, where Rossi said he had lived for several months in years past. He seemed to be in a great mood and is quite the conversationalist which made the interview flow very naturally. We talked about his experiences in the music business, his relationship with friend and colleague Rick Parfitt and Status Quo's latest album Backbone and a lot more. In this week's episode of the RBP Podcast, Mark Pringle and Jasper Murison-Bowie are joined by David Stubbs to talk about his book Mars By 1980, which traces the story of electronic music from its beginnings in the mechanical experiments of the late nineteenth century through Stockhausen and musique concrète to Stevie Wonder's cosmic funk, the 80s electropop of bands like Depeche Mode and beyond. Mark and Jasper hear how David got his start at Melody Maker after co-founding Oxford magazine Monitor as a student; he confesses that at the time he was in a 'slightly pompous phase' where the only music he was listening to was avant garde classical and jazz or funk. These areas inform much of the discussion that follows, as the three of them consider the initially slow and then suddenly meteoric rise of the synthesizer in popular music. The week's audio interview is with Francis Rossi of Status Quo in 2010, with the chosen clips concerning the adjustment of Her Majesty the Queen's undergarments as well as his relationship with bandmate Rick Parfitt. The free feature is Slade, with three pieces about Noddy and co up for grabs. In the archive section, Mark highlights a few pieces including Cecil Taylor's hands blurring with the speed of his playing live in Hammersmith, Muddy Waters interviewed by Max Jones and Dennis Wilson opening up about his time with Charles Manson for the first time to Joel Selvin. Jasper selects Evan Parker playing the Invisible Jukebox game with Mike Barnes for The Wire plus a piece by their illustrious guest about whether humour and music can mix. Mars By 1980: The Story of Electronic Music is available via the Faber website at https://www.faber.co.uk/9780571351299-mars-by-1980.html. Produced by Jasper Murison-Bowie Pieces discussed: Janet Jackson, Aphex Twin, DJ Shadow, Yo! Bum Rush Foucault!, Status Quo audio, Slade, Slader, Sladest, Cecil Taylor, Al Green, Muddy Waters, Cherrelle, Manfred Eicher/ECM, Evan Parker and seriously funny music.

This week the Condition Mint team put shame to one side and share with you their dirty musical secrets - I.e. songs they are embarrassed to like. It’s a deep dive into territory generally ignored on the podcast but fortunately, plenty of the usual nonsense is also discussed such as the location of the Crabcore Nebula and how Francis Rossi would fare competing in the Stawell Gift. Join the conversation with fellow persons of Minterest on our Facebook page If you like any of the music we discuss on the show, support the artist!Buy music. Buy merch. It's not a bloody library! Music discussed this week includes: Spiller feat. (Sophie Ellis Bextor) - Groovejet (If This Aint Love) (2000) Fatboy Slim - Rockafeller SkankFrom: “You’ve Come A Long Way Baby” (1998)
Då släpptes skivor som Dog Of Two Head, Piledriver, Hello!, Quo, Blue For You och Rossis egen favorit On The Level. Musikjournalisten Håkan Persson har träffat Rossi för ett samtal om den långa vägen till framgång och de intensiva åren 1971-1976 och inte minst berättelsen om Rossis legendariska gitarr - hans gröna Fender Telecaster.
