In this episode of The Quo-Cast, Jamie Dyer discusses a Rick Parfitt-penned song that he believes could have been a huge hit had things been handled differently. 1985 was the year Status Quo played Live Aid was also the time the band experimented on various solo projects. Francis Rossi teamed up with Bernie Frost to release several singles including "Modern Romance" and "Jealousy" with a backing band of Pete Kircher and Andy Bown. Rick Parfitt entered the studio with producer Pip Williams to work on his solo album, where he worked alongside bassist John 'Rhino' Edwards and drummer Jeff Rich for the first time. The song "Halloween" was originally recorded for Rick Parfitt's unreleased solo album "Recorded Delivery". It was later repurposed as the B-side to the 1988 single Who Gets the Love, which was a minor hit. It was later included on Parfitt's posthumous solo album "Over and Out". Aquostic was a commercial success, peaking at No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart. Status Quo are one of Britain's longest-running bands, staying together for over six decades. During much of that time, the group was only successful in the U.K., where they racked up a string of Top Ten singles over the decades. In America, the Quo were ignored after they abandoned psychedelia for heavy boogie rock in the early '70s. Before that, the band managed to reach number 12 in the U.S. with the psychedelic classic "Pictures of Matchstick Men" Following that single, the group suffered a lean period for the next few years before the band members decided to refashion themselves as a hard rock boogie band in 1970. The Quo have basically recycled the same simple boogie on each successive album and single, yet their popularity has never waned. If anything, their very predictability ensured the group a large following. The guys started out as The Spectres with Francis Rossi (vocals, guitar) Alan Lancaster (bass) drummer John Coghlan and organist Roy Lynes. The group added Rick Parfitt (guitar, vocals) and changed its name to Status Quo. Throughout the '70s, each album Status Quo released went into the Top Five, while their singles -- including the number one "Down Down" (1974), "Roll Over Lay Down" (1975), "Rain" (1976), "Wild Side of Life" (1976), and a cover of John Fogerty's "Rockin' All Over the World" (1977) - consistently hit the Top Ten. Since they were experiencing a great deal of success, they didn't change their sound at all, they just kept churning out the same heavy boogie. John Coghlan left Status Quo in 1981 – during rehearsals for the band's 20th Anniversary album in Switzerland. Tensions had developed and John left to form his own band. By 1983 his own band featured a selection of respected musicians, comprising; guitarist Ray Majors (ex-Mott and British Lions), bass player Ian Ellis (ex-Savoy Brown and Steamhammer), and keyboard player Jeff Banister. That same year John Coghlan teamed up with a trio of other well-known musicians called the Rockers. The four man line up boasted John on drums, Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy's frontman) on bass, guitar and vocals, Chas Hodges (from Chas ‘n' Dave) on keyboards and Roy Wood (ex Wizzard, ELO and The Move) on guitar and vocals. Coghlan continued to tour regularly playing with various musicians. He began working with Alan Lancaster in Australia who was putting together a band with Australian guitarist John Brewster, called the Bombers. John worked with The Bombers for a year but returned to the UK in 1990. John Coghlan started working with his own band, John Coghlan's Quo, during the late 1990s. By that time, Status Quo had scored 50 British hit singles, which was more than any other band in rock & roll history at the time. This week John Coghlan joins us to explain what those heady days were like, why he left the band in 1981and what life holds for him today. Welcome to Episode 8 of the “Lovecars On the Grid” podcast, the global motorsport roundup! This week with Tiff Needell and Paul Woodman, we toast Sir Lewis Hamilton the GOAT in terms of pole positions with his 100th pole of his career, after another almost flawless weekend of racing in what's normally a bit of a snoozefest at the Barcelona Grand Prix. Have Red Bull cracked under the pressure? Long pit stops. Bad strategy. No second driver to rely on. Or are Mercedes-AMG just in a different class? Did Valtteri Bottas disobey orders to make Lewis' pass more difficult? And are Lewis and Max Verstappen just on a completely different level to the rest of the field? All is revealed! Also on this weeks show, it's Formula E in Monte Carlo. A BRILLIANT spectacle and great to see Formula E looking so good on this historic street circuit. Still not sure about the little gimmicks though... what do you think? And it was the return of the BTCC at Thruxon, the fastest race circuit in the UK. Reigning champion Ash Sutton will be determined to make an impact, together with old hands, Jason Plato and Colin Turkington, and the only rookie in the field, Rick Parfitt jnr. Are the rear wheel drive cars better? Or would the front wheel drive cars take the advantage? We also take a look at the reverse grids in Formula 3. Are they ruining the opportunities for the best drivers? Together with the whole Thruxton roundup with MINI racing, Ginetta Cup and Formula 4.

We talk about how spotting opportunities are often about being determined and interested in people, and never giving up on a good story is a good hack style. Nick talks about interviewing Rick Parfitt from Status Quo following a lead that became a massive story about the Myra Hindley and also being involved in the early days of a conservation charity before it became a massive player in world politics. Pt 1: In the first part of our special double episode, we talk to Rick Parfitt Jnr in a feature length interview about racing, rock n roll, and RVs, as well as putting him in the hotseat with our quickfire questions.
June 2020: Little did drummer John Coghlan know when that he joined Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in the newly-formed band The Spectres back in 1962 his life was on a course for rock stardom. The addition of Rick Parfitt, a change of name and touring strategy later, chart-topping success beckoned for Status Quo which became one of the most successful rock bands of all time. With over 60 UK chart hits, twenty-two reaching the Top 10, they appeared on Top Of The Pops more than any other band. Opening Live Aid at Wembley Stadium in 1985 and achieving a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, Status Quo have written their place in music history. #JohnCoghlan #StatusQuo #JohnCoghlansQuo #rock #covid19
Drei Akkorde, ein unwiderstehlicher Refrain und der wohl einfachste Tanzschritt der Popgeschichte: Rockin All’ Over The World wird 1977 in der Version von Status Quo zum einem der erfolgreichsten Hits der britischen Rockband um die Gitarristen Francis Rossi und Rick Parfitt.
It was such a pleasure sitting down Status Quo's own Francis Rossi for a conversation. The interview took place in the American hotel in Amsterdam, where Rossi said he had lived for several months in years past. He seemed to be in a great mood and is quite the conversationalist which made the interview flow very naturally. We talked about his experiences in the music business, his relationship with friend and colleague Rick Parfitt and Status Quo's latest album Backbone and a lot more. In this week's episode of the RBP Podcast, Mark Pringle and Jasper Murison-Bowie are joined by David Stubbs to talk about his book Mars By 1980, which traces the story of electronic music from its beginnings in the mechanical experiments of the late nineteenth century through Stockhausen and musique concrète to Stevie Wonder's cosmic funk, the 80s electropop of bands like Depeche Mode and beyond. Mark and Jasper hear how David got his start at Melody Maker after co-founding Oxford magazine Monitor as a student; he confesses that at the time he was in a 'slightly pompous phase' where the only music he was listening to was avant garde classical and jazz or funk. These areas inform much of the discussion that follows, as the three of them consider the initially slow and then suddenly meteoric rise of the synthesizer in popular music. The week's audio interview is with Francis Rossi of Status Quo in 2010, with the chosen clips concerning the adjustment of Her Majesty the Queen's undergarments as well as his relationship with bandmate Rick Parfitt. The free feature is Slade, with three pieces about Noddy and co up for grabs. In the archive section, Mark highlights a few pieces including Cecil Taylor's hands blurring with the speed of his playing live in Hammersmith, Muddy Waters interviewed by Max Jones and Dennis Wilson opening up about his time with Charles Manson for the first time to Joel Selvin. Jasper selects Evan Parker playing the Invisible Jukebox game with Mike Barnes for The Wire plus a piece by their illustrious guest about whether humour and music can mix. Mars By 1980: The Story of Electronic Music is available via the Faber website at https://www.faber.co.uk/9780571351299-mars-by-1980.html.

There are many stories in rock and roll about how a fan ended up playing in his favorite band. But Richie Malone's story has to be the most rock and roll of all of them. His father was a huge fan of Status Quo and took Richie to their gigs. This started a chain of events that ended up in Malone stepping into the shoes of his mentor and band co-founder Rick Parfitt. Today Richie is living the rock and roll dream - making albums and touring with his favorite band from childhood.
In the final episode of the first series of Dead Rock Stars, we present a contractual obligation fulfilling Greatest Hits. Just thank Dio we didn't opt for a live album. Or our very own Metal Machine Music. Talking of which, you'll find a heated discussion about that very album, plus chat about Bon Scott's nickname of Road-test Ronnie, Rick Parfitt's big night in, Elvis and the Memphis Mafia, Lemmy's love of poetry and fax machines and the harrowing account of the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash (where some of the band exploded off the scene). Plus eye opening insights on David Bowie, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Phil Lynott, Freddie Mercury, Metallica, Ronnie James Dio and Marc Bolan. School District of Lee County Director of Safety & Security Rick Parfitt joins us to talk about what he and his team are working on to make sure students and staff are as safe as possible for the 2018-2019 school year.
In the latest eye and ear opening instalment of Dead Rock Stars, Mick Wall and Joel McIver take a look at the long and, quite frankly, legendary career of Rick Parfitt of Status Quo. Though often derided by snobby critics for their reliance on 3 chord boogie, The Quo was a band of the people. In fact, they had 60+ top 40 singles in the UK, and were the band who famously opened Live Aid in 1985 with the perfect "Rocking All Over The World". And Rick was their charismatic, talismanic, tousled-haired blonde bombshell, who guys wanted to be, and women wanted to be with,. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

....a tribute to #BobbyVee who was one of the many artists we lost this year.......Rick Parfitt from #StatusQuo....very sad....and #GeorgeMichael who I thought was a massive talent.......not forgetting #DavidBowie and Lemmy.. The TV over Christmas has been pretty bad........there are a few programmes which stand out....Room 101 with the great Frank Skinner and Would I Lie To You....but that's about it....and when you watch these "stadium" comedians with the audience falling about laughing I just don't get it. .... is the mis-use of the English language which is steadily going worse...the letter T seems to be redundant.........thank goodness we Merseysiders speak standard English. ...proof that some things never go away.....I wrote and produced an album of wrestling songs for exotic wrestler #AdrianStreet in the mid 80s....

In the hours after the winning numbers in Spain’s massive El Gordo Christmas lottery are drawn every December 22, discreetly dressed men and women carrying suitcases stashed with bank notes fan out across the country headed for bars, lottery outlets, and banks before the fortunate owners of the prized tickets cash them in. Acting on behalf of wealthy clients, their mission is to buy their winning tickets: they pay cash, ask no questions, and offer a generous bonus on top. It’s a very simple way to help reduce their clients’ tax bill. Two left-wing activists have been arrested in the Greek port city of Igoumenitsa after they were discovered attempting to bring eight refugees to Spain by hiding them in the back of a caravan. Motorists in Madrd were hit with unprecedented measures on Thursday to reduce traffic with only vehicles whose license plate ends with an odd number permitted to enter the city center. The regional government of Valencia has announced it will oblige state schools to grant transsexual minors access to bathrooms and changing rooms corresponding to their chosen gender, rather than that they were born with. As The UK still continues to defy Brexit doom forecasts the salaries of high profile business bosses rose by more than 80 per cent in an 11 year period, new research has revealed. Chief executives' pay went up from £1million in 2003 to an average of £1.9m in 2014. The research by the Lancaster University Management School found that during the same period Britain's top 350 companies' performance improved by less than 8.5 per cent. The year has ended with the sad departure of more stars with George Michael and Rick Parfitt heading the UK list. Meanwhile, Paul Gascoine, Gazza, who has battled alcoholism for two decades, was reportedly rushed to an east London hospital after a fracas with other guests at the boutique Ace Hotel in Shoreditch. Figures from the Department for Education show 720 pupils were suspended from school last year and 470 of those incidents were to do with racial abuse. Laura Kuenssberg, the BBC's political editor has said she was told that the Queen supported EU withdrawal, but did not report it as she could not find a second source. A boy raider has been locked up for six months for robbing two shops and a man at knifepoint in a five-month reign of terror when he was just 12.
