Before glam exploded and metal ruled MTV, one album tried to bridge the shred-heavy brilliance of Europe with the big-hook ambitions of American rock radio—only to be lost in the chaos of lineup changes and flashing lights. Literally. In this episode, we rediscover Assault Attack by the Michael Schenker Group—a cult classic released in 1982 that had everything going for it: a legendary guitarist, a powerhouse vocalist, and production by Martin Birch. So why didn't it break through? We dig into the story behind the album's creation, from the fallout after One Night at Budokan to the last-minute firing of Graham Bonnet before the band could tour. Along the way, we explore what makes Assault Attack stand out musically—from Schenker's melodic riffing to the underrated grooves laid down by bassist Chris Glen and drummer Ted McKenna. This episode is for fans of underappreciated hard rock, for those who love when bands sound like bands (not just guitar showcases), and for anyone who's ever found a hidden gem in the cassette bin and wondered how it got there. If you're into Rainbow, UFO, or even Iron Maiden's deeper cuts, this one's got something for you.Episode Highlights• 0:00 – [Intro: “Assault Attack”] – The mystery of a great album no one saw live• 5:12 – [Band History] – How MSG went from Budokan to Bonnet• 12:45 – [Album Overview] – Birch's production magic and the shift in sound• 21:30 – [“Desert Song”] – A haunting riff and vocal synergy• 29:00 – [“Broken Promises”] – The secret star: Chris Glen's bass lines• 34:20 – [“Dancer”] – Big hooks, goofy lyrics, and Bonnet's vocal drama• 42:00 – [Legacy & What-Ifs] – What could've been with Coverdale or a proper tour• 48:10 – [Community Pick] – How one vote brought this album into the spotlightDon't Miss OutDig deeper into forgotten albums and the stories that shaped them. S8E6 went out live from Sedgefield at 19h00 on 6 Feb 2025.  It was great to be back doing a live show.  We kicked off pretty chilled but that didn't last, we got through Ryan Eagles and into Pantera pretty damn quick.  There is something for everyone who loves guitars on this show.  The Twisted Twins featured two tracks called ‘Black & White'  by U.D.O. and Saxon.   The Rock and Metal Time Machine looked at 4 events: The Beatles on Ed Sullivan in 1964, Jimi Hendrix on ToTP's, The Clash signing to CBS, and Bon Scott's last-ever song with ACDC.  The Immortals was mellow with Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Diabolical Challenge was p@#s heavy with four albums produced by Ross Robinson, the godfather of Nu-Metal.  Slipknot, Sepultura, Korn, and Machine Head did the honours.    Artists featured:  Ryan Adams, Eagles, Thin Lizzy, Pantera, Hellyeah, Joe Bonamassa, Kid Rock, Counting Crows, Dio, Black Sabbath, Michael Schenker Group, The Winery Dogs, Alice Cooper, Saxon, U.D.O., BlackØwl, Black Stone Cherry, Seether, Accept, Rory Gallagher, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Clash, ACDC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Korn, Machine Head, Slipknot, Sepultura, LIVE, Tremonti, Rush, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Arch Enemy, The Gaslight Anthem.    The Story of Rock and Roll. S8E4 was prerecorded on 22 Jan 2025 to allow me to attend the Green Day, Offspring, and Fokofpolisiekar gig live in Cape Town on 23 Jan the night this show went out on Rebel Rock Radio.   And what a gig it was.  It seems like forever since South Africa got International bands of that calibre.  The last time I was out for a show was for Guns N' Roses in 2018, and then Covid happened and KISS got cancelled and that was the last time I was at a live gig.  So, it was amazing and one of the best shows I have ever seen.  Hats off to Fokofpolisiekar who show just how good they are amongst the best international acts in the world  Anyway back to this show.  We had all the normal features; Twisted Triplets, Evolutions:  Judas Priest, The Immortals, and This Week in Rock and Metal, PLUS The  Diabolical Challenge is back.  We looked at four albums produced  Martin Birch.  Heaven & Hell, The Number of the Beast, Rising, and Assault Attack by Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Rainbow and Michael Schenker Group respectively.   Artists featured:  Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Emigrate, Def Leppard, Saxon, Rose Tattoo, ACDC, Goodbye June, The L.A. Graham Bonnet in conversation with David Eastaugh English rock singer. He has recorded and performed as a solo artist and as a member of several rocks bands including Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Alcatrazz, and Impellitteri. He is known for his powerful singing voice but is capable of also singing soft melodies. In 1979, Bonnet was approached to join  Sweet to replace Brian Connolly. However, he was chosen by Ritchie Blackmore to replace Ronnie James Dio as the vocalist of hard rock band Rainbow. This was something of a musical departure for Bonnet, who had previously identified himself more as an R&B singer. Bonnet would later credit his time in Rainbow and his collaboration with Blackmore, in particular, as fundamentally changing his musical outlook to a more hard rock focus. He sang on the Down to Earth LP, which would become his most successful album. It spawned two hit singles in 1979 and 1980: "Since You Been Gone" and "All Night Long". During Bonnet's time in the band, Rainbow also headlined the inaugural Monsters of Rock festival at Donington Park, Castle Donington.

This week we respectfully welcome back to the show Slamfest Podcast host: Mad Brad Rusthoven. He has called us out on a grave mistake of not having played Black Country Communion on any of our recent New Wave Of Classic Rock episodes. Therefore, we give you “Grave Mistakes: BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION Shoulda Been Huge”… scratch that: Should BE Huge!!! Celebrate this amazing supergroup with us. Apologies for a little hiss and background noise in the episode (our crack staff must have been smoking crack again). This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we mentioned before on the show and played an offshoot band from them. They contain some household names in classic blues and rock and have a hell of a pedigree, but unfortunately, their brilliance has yet to be recognized to the degree that it truly deserves. This is the bastard child of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin for the love of Lemmy! We think they SHOULD BE HUGE… Songs this week include:Black Country Communion - “Beggarman” from Black Country Communion (2010)Black Country Communion - “The Outsider” from 2 (2011)Black Country Communion - “The Great Divide” from Live Over Europe (2012)Black Country Communion - “Midnight Sun” from Afterglow (2012)Black Country Communion - “Sway” from BCCIV (2017)Black Country Communion - “Stay Free” from V (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

In the 80s, the idea of special acoustic or unplugged albums and shows became a new medium that continues to today. Most think that Mtv started the movement in 1989 with their series called “unplugged”, however, most rock bands were playing acoustic renditions of their songs on radio when they would do in-town promotions long before then. This week we are celebrating bands that can re-imagine their songs with acoustic instruments and still rock! We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air guitars! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artist that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs.Songs this week include:The Struts – “Fallin' With Me” from Unplugged At EastWest - EP (2023)Kingdom Come – “Janine” from Live & Unplugged (1998)Helloween – “Future World” from Unarmed (2009) Wednesday 13 – “Scary Song” from Undead Unplugged (2014)Corey Taylor – “Lunatic Fringe” from CMFB… Sides (2022)Courage My Love – “For Now” from For Now (Acoustic Sessions) (2012)MSG – “Lights Out” from Unplugged Live (1993) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Ronnie Dawg Robson is a highly sought after session musician. While he is primarly known as a top shelf bassist, and is listed in "The Titans of Bass" as one of the top 130 bassists the world over, he has a much broader resume than that. This is from his own website:   To date, Ronnie's resume is outstanding for he has recorded bass tracks with current and/or ex members of; Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Hollywood Monsters, Deep Purple, Megadeth, Testament, Quiet Riot, Blue Oyster Cult, Thin Lizzy, The Band, Paul Di'Anno, Mayan, Alice Cooper, Prophecy, Firewind, Ronnie James Dio, Fludd, John Lennon, Platinum Blonde, Hand Over Fist, Sunroad, Rainbow, Jeff Beck, Hollentor, Metalium, Danko Jones, Goddo, Heaven and Hell, Jethro Tull and the Michael Schenker Group. He has been in the music business for forty-one years, studying classical piano from the age of seven with the Royal Conservatory of Music, moving on to guitar studies at the age of twelve. At the age of nineteen, he began working in multiple Toronto based recording studios as an engineer, session musician, forwarding into stage and tour managing with various acts, to opening his own production company - aligning with various artists in both concert, television and documentary productions. We discussed all this and more during our chat.    Here's where you can find his web site:https://www.ronnierobson.com/Here's where to find my YouTube channel for the raw video version of this episode:  @tommysolo9154And if you like this podcast & would like to help me to keep it going, why not go to this site & buy me a coffee or two?     https://buymeacoffee.com/tsolobandqBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tommy-solo-s-famous-friends--4318572/support.

The Mets immediately came to terms with Correa and his agent, Scott Boras and as this is being typed on Christmas day, the Mets have similar concerns.  According to Cot's Contracts, the Mets have an opening day 2023 payroll of $365 million (including Correa), which is about $150 million over the luxury tax mark.  This would result in a $111 million tax.Hooks & Runs - www.hooksandruns.comHooks & Runs on TikTok -  https://www.tiktok.com/@hooksandrunsHooks & Runs on Twitter - https://twitter.com/hooksandrunspcCraig Estlinbaum on TwitterLink: https://twitter.com/CraigEstlinbaumAndrew Eckhoff on Tik Tok (it's true!)Link: https://www.tiktok.com/@hofffestRex von Pohl (Krazy Karl's Music Emporium) on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/people/Krazy-Karlz-Music-Emporium/100063801500293/ Music: "Warrior of Light" by ikolics (Premium Beat)This podcast and this episode are copyright Craig Estlinbaum, 2022, all rights reserved

Jeff played drums om albums and tours for UFO, Paul Gilbert, George Lynch, and Dokken. He played drums in Surgical Steel before switching to lead vocals and was the drummer/lead vocalist for St. Michael, both Phoenix, AZ-based bands that at one time featured future Badlands cohort Greg Chaisson. Badlands, of course, featured the talents of ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Jake E. Lee and was signed to Atlantic Records. Jeff played drums of the bands 2nd and eventual 3rd releases while also touring on with them on the “Voodoo Highway” tour. Jeff has some of the best rock n' roll stories, many of which could have been compared to Spinal Tap! So check out episode# 38 for some of those great stories and his career!
