HEAVY Music Interviews
From FRANKIES To DINGBATS PARTY PIT - Keeping Music Alive With JORDAN McDONALD

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersPhoto credit ALI NASSERIDecember 2023 saw the end of an era of live music that reinvigorated the entire Sydney music scene and spread that love throughout the rest of the country. For 10 years, Frankies Pizza was the cornerstone of the Sydney live music hub, bringing a swag of international bands through its doors as well as giving Australian acts of all genres and career trajectories a home where they could be heard. And, more importantly, understood. While the entire staff of Frankies was involved in bringing the club to life, one man would always be in the thick of things playing, performing, or moshing in the pit. That man - Jordan McDonald - became a legend amongst many, always smiling, always approachable and never judgemental. So, when Frankies closed its doors for the final time, the local music scene lost not only a great venue but also an icon of the industry. While being vocal that he did not want Frankies to continue in any shape or form in another venue - believing the legacy should end where it started - McDonald never turned his back on the music scene, continuing his drumming passion with local and touring acts as well as branching out into other areas of hospitality, but being an active and contributing part of the Australian music scene in a capacity where he could give back to the industry was never far from his mind.Initially launching his own business Nite Rite, aimed at helping businesses and individuals set up and run live music venues amongst other things, McDonald soon found opportunities knocking to start up something more based on his personal choices and experiences. This came in the form of a new live music venue situated in the heart of the Sydney CBD that was screaming out for live music. After getting his head back into the booking and promoting side of music, McDonald is now ready to launch a monthly live music night called Dingbats Party Pit at a venue underneath the Arcade Bar on O'Connell Street on March 7. But of course, as anyone who visited Frankies or knows Jordan McDonald would lovingly point out, the man has more on his mind than a once-monthly event.HEAVY sat down with Jordan for an interesting chat to flesh things out."I'm glad other people remember it, because I don't remember much," he laughed when we first bring up Frankies. "That was ten years of my life, and it was ten years well spent. It was fantastic. And it was one of these classic examples of the whole fake it 'til ya make it thing. I had this brilliant business partner who pulled me into the mix when I was selling him beers - because I used to tour with bands around the United States and I would come back to Australia and the closest thing to a craft beer would be your Little Creatures or Coopers or whatever. But there wasn't too much in the way of funky options out there, so I started distributing all these interesting beers into the country, and there was this dude who had a great little venue called Shady Pines Saloon and I would sell him a bunch of American beers. One night he pulled me aside, and he said, 'hey man, I've got this idea. I wanna do a rock n roll club. I have a space in the Sydney CBD that is a totally untried and untested area for this kind of thing.'"At that point of time everyone would go to the CBD to go to work, finish work, then go home. You just wouldn't hang out there. And he had this concept to throw a gig every night of the week, seven days a week until 4am, and he thought I was the solution to it. I didn't know what the hell I was doing, but I said yes, let's do this thing, and fast forward ten years and Frankies Pizza had built its name as a trusted force in the rock n roll world."In the full interview, Jordan talks more about Frankies and the legacy it left behind, what he has been doing since it closed down, his new company Nite Rite and how it aims to help the music industry, his new venture Dingbats Party Club and what to expect, the venue itself, the launch party of March 7, future plans to open it up for local, national and international acts and more. The March 7 launch event features 5 bands, each overflowing with Party Rock attitude. Drawing heavy inspiration from the Rock Clubs of Hollywood's Hair Metal heyday, Dingbats thought it best to come out swinging Sunset Strip style. If Big Red Fire Truck, Bloody Legend and The Hush don't leave you wondering who bought the time machine to 1989, Planet Earth's #1 Poison tribute act, Poizon'Us, will have you flying in the Flux Capacitor by the first four bars.In case anyone gets too comfortable, Dingbats are dropping a wildcard set from one of the world's most exciting up and coming alternative acts, MANNEQUIN DEATH SQUAD. A 2 piece DIY tour de force taking the world by storm. DJs NITECALL, AXL BROS & JORDAN ADAM will be reducing a Heavy Metal jús before, between and after all featured acts. And that's not all. Thraxxy Kilmister's Horrendously Bad Tattoo Competition calls upon all cretins present to bare their most regrettable ink for a chance at mega merch packs, tattoo credit and a generous portion of champion's glory. This is a fully accessible event with seamless wheelchair access and disabled facilities. Creating an Owner Mindset that Inspires Creativity, Jonathan Weiss

When Jonathan Weiss, a German technical lead, sold his startup to AWS 13 years ago, he thought he was going to spend all of his time in software development. Instead, it was a more encompassing, dynamic role that would also let him connect with customers, take on complex problems, and eventually thrive within a culture of innovation and ownership. Today, he leads over 2,600 developers in Berlin, and what keeps him up at night is the creative freedom AWS affords him. From Startup to AWS: A Founder's Journey, Jonathan Weiss His journey began in Berlin, where he co-founded a startup to simplify cloud management for businesses. The timing was perfect; AWS was in its infancy, and there was a glaring need for tools to help startups migrate to the cloud. Weiss recalls, "We saw the same problem over and over, helping companies deploy their applications and manage their workloads." The solution was a cloud management tool which attracted the attention of AWS leadership, then and now CEO Andy Jassy. Soon after pitching their idea - and the potential of Berlin as a hub for development - the startup was acquired, its product evolving into AWS OpsWorks, still a core service today. What kept him at AWS long after the acquisition is its very particular culture. "I stayed because of a feeling of agency," he says. "At AWS, whether it's the CEO or an intern, if you've got a good idea, people will listen." The Power of Ownership and Decentralization The AWS culture emphasizes ownership from top to bottom. "It's not an infrequent occurrence for somebody to come to me with a challenge and say, 'Amazon should do this,'" he reports. "My response is always, 'Who is this Amazon person you're talking about? If you see the problem, propose the solution." This is an ethos of accountability and empowerment throughout the organization. The organization is decentralized, almost in some ways like startups within the greater AWS ecosystem. Each team owns their products, their roadmap, and their customer satisfaction to make sure it's all very agile and creative. "It's possible to be incredibly creative at AWS because of this autonomy. We push decisions as close to the problem as possible, trusting those who understand the customer best to make the right calls." A Startup Mentality in a Global Giant Despite its scale, AWS retains the entrepreneurial spirit of a startup. According to him, his role hasn't really changed much since his days as one of the founders of a startup: "The only thing I don't do anymore is clean the toilets," he jokes. Beyond that, he's still deeply involved in customer relations, product development, and cross-functional collaboration. At AWS, wearing several hats is not only encouraged but expected. "We don't work in silos. If the task at hand requires marketing expertise or legal input, you step in and contribute. The end goal is always the same: make the customer happy." This strongly contrasts with the rigid traditional corporate environment where well-defined roles and responsibilities choke innovation. "At AWS, there's no 'not my job' mentality," he asserts. "Everyone is empowered to solve problems, no matter their title or role." Creativity Meets Practicality Asked if it is possible to remain creative within a large organization, he uses the decentralized nature of AWS as an enabler. "Our teams are small and independent, which enables us to experiment and have fast iterations," he says. "We encourage ourselves to think big, but start small with iterated learning from customer feedback." A case in point is PartyRock, which started life as an internal tool for experimenting with generative AI models. "It started off as a side project to help our team understand large language models, but it quickly gained traction within AWS, and we decided to launch it publicly." Today, hundreds of thousands of users are building AI-driven apps on PartyRock, from vacation planners to soccer team managers. "This sort of bottom-up innovation is wh...

Letting The Mongrel Out To Play With THE REVEREND From WEST THEBARTON

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersFrom humble beginnings in Adelaide, party rock outfit West Thebarton have spread their metaphorical wings far and wide, drawing all who listen deeper into their intricate musical web of enjoyment.Since announcing themselves on the scene with their 2015 debut EP West Thebarton Brothel Party, which catapulted them into the earholes of fans and industry professionals alike, West Thebarton have continued to grow at their own pace and volition. The years between West Thebarton Brothel Party and their 2018 debut studio album, Different Beings Being Different, saw a marked evolution within the band. Line-up and name changes brought the group into a new era, one that West Thebarton have continued to flourish within since.Which brings us to 2024. West Thebarton have experienced the full plethora of trials and tribulations life can throw at you over the last five years with personal life changes: parenthood, love, loss, moves interstate and moves overseas all having the potential to derail this rock train short of their second stop. But fear not, for Adelaide's favourite sons have returned with their second album Mongrel Australia, which finds the band at the crest of a particularly high creative peak; focussing on what lay ahead instead of dwelling in the past.Vocalist/guitarist The Reverend joined HEAVY to bring us up to speed."We've just got a new record out called Mongrel Australia," he began. "It came out a couple of weeks ago, but we're heading out on the road, ready to take on all the East Coast cities."We ask how Mongrel Australia was received after a lengthy break between albums."Number one, it's been awesome just to be out there, to be honest," he replied. "We've been sitting on these songs and playing them live for a couple of years now with everything that's been going on. So just having it out there in the world has been a huge sigh of relief for us. We were super anxious putting them out there and seeing how they would be received, but so many people have been telling us how awesome it is to have a new record out there that they can listen from end to end. Also, there's been a bit of a change of tone on some of the songs on this record. We were in a bit of a different place on the second record compared to the first record, and so some of the content and themes are a little bit different. We've had a bunch of people reach out to say this is awesome to hear some of the slower songs. We've got a song called Slow on there which is very stripped back - it's not very chainsaw to the throat West Thebarton like (laughs)- but people are really loving it, which is awesome to hear. That's one of the things you always worry about as a musician is are your fans going to enjoy the stuff you put out."In the full interview, The Reverend discusses the process of going into an album and internal talks about the possible direction, Mongrel Australia from a musical perspective, which three songs he would advise people listen to from the album to best get to know the band, how it differs musically to their debut album Different Beings Being Different, what has changed in the band between albums, the early days of the band, their upcoming tour, what to expect from West Thebarton live and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Mike Miller is the Director of Project Management at AWS, and he joins us today to share about the inspirational AI-powered products and services that are making waves at Amazon, particularly those with generative prompt engineering capabilities. We discuss how Mike and his team choose which products to bring to market, the ins and outs of PartyRock including the challenges of developing it, AWS's strategy for generative AI, and how the company aims to serve everyone, even those with very little technical knowledge. Mike also explains how customers are using his products and what he's learned from their behaviors, and we discuss what may lie ahead in the future of generative prompt engineering. Key Points From This Episode:Mike Miller's professional background, and how he got into AI and AWS. How Mike and his team decide on the products to bring to market for developers. Where PartyRock came from and how it fits into AWS's strategy. How AWS decided on the timing to make PartyRock accessible to all.   What AWS's products mean for those with zero coding experience. The level of oversight that is required to service clients who have no technical background. Taking a closer look at AWS's strategy for generative AI. How customers are using PartyRock, and what Mike has learned from these observations. The challenges that the team faced whilst developing PartyRock, and how they persevered. Trying to understand the future of generative prompt engineering. A reminder that PartyRock is free, so go try it out! Quotes:“We were working on AI and ML [at Amazon] and discovered that developers learned best when they found relevant, interesting, [and] hands-on projects that they could work on. So, we built DeepLens as a way to provide a fun opportunity to get hands-on with some of these new technologies.” — Mike Miller [0:02:20]“When we look at AIML and generative AI, these things are transformative technologies that really require almost a new set of intuition for developers who want to build on these things.” — Mike Miller [0:05:19]“In the long run, innovations are going to come from everywhere; from all walks of life, from all skill levels, [and] from different backgrounds. The more of those people that we can provide the tools and the intuition and the power to create innovations, the better off we all are.” — Mike Miller [0:13:58]“Given a paintbrush and a blank canvas, most people don't wind up with The Sistine Chapel. Additionally, we discuss some of the previous tools Mike's team has delivered at the intersection of developer education and entertainment, including DeepLens, a computer vision hardware device, DeepRacer, a programmable vehicle that uses reinforcement learning to navigate a track, and lastly, DeepComposer, a generative AI model that transforms musical inputs and creates accompanying compositions.
