Summer is upon us once more! What better soundtrack than HTTT? Our guest this week is the amazing Paul Groves. Hailing from Guildford, Surrey, (UK), Paul developed a passion for house music and started DJ'ing in the early 90's, making regular appearances in bars, clubs and underground parties across London and the South East. After a ten-year break, Paul returned to the decks in 2009 after being inspired by Greg Wilson's seminal disco/edits Essential Mix on Radio 1. He quickly established himself as a resident DJ for Shade Disco where his love of nu-disco, filtered, soulful and jackin' house, have seen him on warm-up duties for Michael Gray, The Shapeshifters, Late Nite Tuff Guy, Dr Packer, Hifi Sean, Fingerman and Babert to name but a few. It hasn't been easy for Sean Dickson. In fact, he doesn't even look like the Soup Dragons frontman you remember from early 90s hits like "I'm Free" and "Divine Thing". There's a good reason for that - almost nothing is the same. Since the Soup Dragons closed up shop in the late 90s, Sean came out, left music for many years, spent some time battling mental health, marrying his husband and finally becoming an in demand DJ named HiFi Sean and releasing a hit new album with vocalist David McAlmont recently called Happy Endings. Sean opens up more than he ever has before, especially when it comes to the endurance of "I'm Free" which he doesn't benefit from. It's a lot and, ultimately, a story of redemption. Whether with his first band Thieves – hugely underrated, I listen to those songs all the time – his Britpop era partnership with Suede exile Bernard Butler – the union of which produced arguably the finest pop song of the mid-1990s - his work with the great Dave Arnold or the English composer Michael Nyman, the voice of David McAlmont has been a fixture of my listening habits for almost three decades. Turns out that's not stopping anytime soon. These days David has paired up with one Sean Dickinson – aka HiFi Sean, aka Sean from baggy boys the Soup Dragons – for a new venture, the spoils of which can be heard on February 3rd, 2023, via Plastique Recordings. The record is called Happy Ending, and it's an eclectic collection of songs that are unmistakably of the modern age – angsty, twitchy, sad, sombre, maybe even a bit paranoid, confused, hopefully, looking for meaning and love. It's not even 2023 yet and I might have found my favourite record of next year already. And so on this episode I speak to David about that record, but also his work with all of the aforementioned, and get into the machinations of one of my lifetime's most unique talents. Per #Wikipedia Crystal Waters is an American house and dance music singer and songwriter, best known for her 1990s dance hits "Gypsy Woman", "100% Pure Love", and 2007's "Destination Calabria" with Alex Gaudino. All three of her studio albums produced a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. In December 2016, Billboard magazine ranked her as one of the most successful dance artists of all time. Her accolades include six ASCAP Songwriter awards, three American Music Award nominations, an MTV Video Music Award nod, four Billboard Music Awards and twelve #1 Billboard Dance Chart hits. Her hit song "Gypsy Woman" was sampled in musician Trey Songz's 2017 song "1x1" from his album Tremaine the Album, which she co-wrote. _________ Waters' first job in the music world was as a backup singer at a local recording studio. She realized she wanted the creative control of writing her own music. Meeting the Basement Boys at a D.C. conference, they agreed to collaborate. Waters' self-described style was jazz and the Basement Boys was house. The first two songs she wrote for the 'Boys were "Makin' Happy" and "Gypsy Woman". Waters signed a writing contract with Mercury Records in 1989.[citation needed] Her single "Makin' Happy", with contributions by remixer Steve "Silk" Hurley, shot quickly to #1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs.[citation needed] With her 1994 follow-up album Storyteller, Waters made a mainstream comeback with her hit single "100% Pure Love", which hit number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100,[5] #1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs and became one of the longest-charting singles on the Hot 100 at 45 weeks ("Gypsy Woman" had remained on the chart for 16 weeks). The track is a mashup, taking the instrumental from Rune's "Calabria" and the vocals from Alex Gaudino's and Crystal Waters' "Destination Unknown", both originally released in 2003. It was produced with the help of Maurizio Nari and Ronnie Milani (Nari & Milani), matching the saxophone hook/riff from "Calabria" to Crystal Waters' voice. "Destination Calabria" was released as a 12-inch single by the Italian label Rise Records, and as a CD single on March 19, 2007 by British label Data Records. It originally charted in Australia in February 2004, peaking at #98 under the title "Destination Unknown" before being re-released as "Destination Calabria" and reaching #2 in 2007. In 2012, "Le Bump" with Yolanda Be Cool gave Waters another #1 on the Beatport House Chart.
