In this episode we are in conversation with Elana Kaufman. Elana uses the pronouns (she/her) and is a yoga teacher, Reiki II healer, space holder, creatrix and musician. Luna Lotus Healing is the ever evolving container that hosts Elana’s practice and offerings, which prioritize accessible, intentional and respectful exploration of healing movement and relaxation modalities for all. “Luna,” the Spanish word meaning Moon, is the representation of her connection and devotion to the Divine Feminine and a bow to Elana’s Puerto Rican roots; “Lotus” encapsulates the energy and experience of rising in honor of one’s darkness, the uncertain, the uncomfortable, and the unseen, to flourish and flower. In acknowledgement of and reverence for our shared human experiences as well as our differences in race, gender, religious or spiritual affiliation, sexuality, age, mobility, and socioeconomic status, Elana maintains a safe container of exploration and relaxation. Her passion for music, sound, and song are deeply interwoven into her offerings and are brought into practice through chanting mantras, creating healing playlists for her classes and singing songs. She believes in the power of restorative revolution- when we nurture ourselves, do our inner work to process and integrate our healing, we can better show up in service of our collective. Today we explore the power of mantra and prayers and how change happens when people come together to make a better world.
This week on Unorthodox, we’re obsessed with the Olympics. Our Jewish guests are 20-year-old twins Jack and David Cahn, co-authors of a new book called When Millennials Rule: The Reshaping of America. They tell us what they think of the 2016 election, which twin is better at chess, and how to prepare for the Millennial takeover. Our Gentile of the Week is Gaura Vani, a lifelong Hare Krishna and performer of Mantra Music, which is based on the ancient call-and-response devotional tradition known as Kirtan. He leads us in a chant and even tells us we have good voices. Like listening to us each week? Consider making a contribution to support the show. We love hearing from you! Two of the great ambassadors and talents from the mantra music world stop by the kitchen table to discuss the origins of the universe and the very meaning of life! Not really but it sure seemed like that. But we did talk about the Chant4Change project going on in Washington DC on 10/08, the practice of Bhakti Yoga in the west, the power of sound, the essence of mantras and how to find a deeper connection no matter what faith you do or do not belong to. He travels often to Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia performing both as a solo artist and with his sacred music ensembles Sita & the Hanumen and As Kindred Spirits. Gaura Vani performs regularly at eclectic venues like private homes, theatres, temples, yoga studios as well as festivals like Lollapalooza, Bhakti Fest and Wanderlust. This talk, through music and narrative, explores the life and legacy of Bhaktivinod Thakur – a great teacher of Bhakti who lived in the 1800's. Dr. Krishnabhishek Ghosh is a scholar, teacher and a long time practitioner of bhakti yoga. Born in a family of Vaiṣṇavas in Bengal, he is a disciple of Tamal Kṛṣṇa Goswami and became the first Indian citizen to pursue research on Hindu Studies at Oxford University, writing a thesis on Lord Jagannath in the Caitanya Cartāmṛta. He recently received his doctorate from the university of Chicago for a dissertation on Bhaktivinod Thakur titled “Vaiṣṇavism and the West.”
