Yoga, Cider Day and Youth Camps in today's show with Lisa Burke, plus a look back at the week's news. My guests this week are Isabelle Thill, owner and teacher at Exhale Yoga; Carlo Hein, founder and president of the board at Ramborn Cider Company; Vicky Koster and Louisa Guarda who are National Junior Representatives of CISV. And, of course, Sasha Kehoe who gives us a reflection of the week's news. First Yoga Conference in Luxembourg I first met Isabelle Thill a few years ago when I was encouraged to try her yoga classes. Isabelle is someone you don't forget. She exudes zen, great beauty, poise and flexibility one could only hope to achieve in their lifetime. Since then, Isabelle has lived in South Africa, Paris during covid times, and has now returned to Luxembourg. Covid altered teaching conditions (and income) for many yoga teachers as people frequently take classes online now. As someone who has always travelled the world to discover new yoga styles and teachers, Isabelle is now bringing that expertise to Luxembourg. The first Yoga Conference in Luxembourg will be held on 15, 16 and 17 of September with much more besides yoga: music, meditation, lectures, massage, healthy lifestyle seminars and vegan cuisine. Ramborn celebrates World Cider Day Ramborn Cider company has developed award winning artisanal ciders from local apples, pears and even quince. The company is committed to working sustainably and to continuing the heritage that Luxembourg once had for cider-making. Carlo Hein and his family have been working in the sustainable construction sector and renewable energy sector since 1996 with their company Becolux. They built the first windfarm and first open solar park. Committed to good business practice, Ramborn Cider company is one of the first B Corps in Luxembourg too. World Cider Day will be celebrated on June 3rd and symbolises the start of the apple cider season. You can celebrate at Ramborn, where they'll have cider-making masterclasses, a DJ who will incorporate natural sounds and can also make cocktails, tours of the Cider Haff, food and fun for all the family. Naturally there will be cider tastings, plus the first 'Cider Pong' tournament in Luxembourg. CISV - a youth organisation to build global friendships Vicky Koster and Louisa Guarda joined CISV through word of mouth. Sadly, due to the decline during covid, the Luxembourg CISV chapter is at risk, and these young students came to tell us the great worth of this initiative. Have you got a gap in your summer plans and you're aged 11 upwards? Well then it's worth getting in touch with CISV to look at what they have on offer, not just for summer, but throughout the year. The idea is to connect people around the world and help develop great global citizens of the future. Their events are organised depending on age, from global villages to youth meetings, 'step up' and seminars. They provide amazing opportunities to travel too! Get in touch to see what's going on this summer.

"Less is more. You can be really clear and concise at the same time." "I always like to think of gathering content as the first piece of the puzzle." "Who is it exactly that you are trying to attract?" "People need to know that you're the expert in what you do, in order to trust you." "You have control over how your audience moves through your site." "Especially when it comes to websites, they're really a living, breathing thing. So websites really should be getting updated pretty often." "You don't have to necessarily start over because you've shifted a little bit." "Thinking about that emotional connection that your yoga expertise has with your clients - that's really going to be the key to helping you put all the pieces of the puzzle together."

In today's podcast, we talk to Yoga Expert Lakshmi Nair about Yoga, People of Colour and Cultural Appropriation. In celebration of Black History Month, we talk about how yoga impacts our current culture. How we share yoga responsibility, and it is necessary to have brave spaces for POC to practice. Lakshmi Nair lived in the stories and philosophy of yoga and Ayurveda from a young age, Lakshmi formally studied yoga at Vivekananda Yoga Kendra and Kaivalyadhama Ashram in India in 2002. She also attended 4 years of graduate study in South Asian Studies at UC Berkeley, where she studied Sanskrit, Tamil, and contemporary South Asian literature. In 2014, Lakshmi started Satya Yoga Immersion for People of Color, one of the country’s first and perhaps only yoga immersion and teacher training programs exclusively for people of colour. Since 2014, Satya Yoga Immersion has grown into Satya Yoga Collective (www.satyayogacollective.com), a yoga collective offering yoga for people of colour by people of colour. In 2016, Lakshmi was a panellist at the 3rd annual Race and Yoga Conference at Mills College in Oakland, California and also at the Center for Trauma and Resilience's Diversifying Your Practice Symposium in Denver. She writes about her experiences as a South Asian American yoga teacher and about her journey to POC yoga in the Yoga and Body Image Coalition’s new book Yoga Rising: 30 Empowering Stories from Yoga Renegades for Every Body, edited by Melanie Klein, available via Llewelyn Worldwide. Lakshmi Nair's Additional reflections on Cultural Appropriation "I appreciate when people are serious about their study of yoga, and they go to Indian sources...especially for things like Sanskrit pronunciation, etc. You know? Treat it like a language. You wouldn't try to learn French from exclusively Chinese sources, right? Also, I appreciate when people approach yoga as a spiritual tradition first and not as a business or as just a fitness modality or as a hot trend. It's hard to say how, but you can only tell when someone approaches it with the humility and respect that we humans naturally feel for the sacred. And finally, the one thing I see zero of is actual care and concern about South Asian people. If you are so into a spiritual tradition of a people, you should give a damn about the people, right? A powerful example of this is when that mass shooting happened at a gurudwara in Oak Creek, WI several years ago. I see all these white kundalini practitioners in their turbans, some of whom are making lots of money from it, and identifying with the Sikh spiritual tradition, but not identifying with the people enough to even feel anything when such a thing happens in a gurudwara, let alone show support. When you only care about the things you can consume, our food, our clothes, our cool spirituality. It just feels a lot like taking. And that is just reminiscent of colonialism. What makes something appropriation is when it mimics the colonial relationship to race and culture. Cultural appropriation is when there is just a one way to the flow of resources. Who is benefitting from the relationship? When yoga classes are all or mostly white, we can see clearly who is profiting from yoga and who is not. If we truly believed that we are all one, that would be reflected in our yoga temples, but what is indicated is that we care more about the money to be made that we do about the essence of yoga. And the people who are the haves in this society are primarily the people who historically (and currently) benefitted from colonialism. Hi guys! I’m back from my break in the Spanish Desert. I went to a European Burning Man Festival Called Nowhere and had a lot of fun building a camp, feeding the build crew lots of high vibe conscious eating food at our camp, as well as teaching yoga, teaching the chakras, discovering awe inspiring creative projects and connecting with like minded people. I also lost my voice for 5 days because of the tremendous amount of dust and wind storms, so if my voice sounds a little off to you today, that’s why. I drove to Paris from Spain yesterday where I’ll be practicing some yoga , and maybe catching some interviews for the show, before I head back to Spain to attend the Yoga Conference in Barcelona where I hope to get some interviews as well. If you guys want to follow my yomad (as in yoga nomad) travel adventures, you can find me on instagram at Visionary Lifestyle Guide and of course the IG for the show at Visionary Lifestyle Podcast. Today’s guest is Jules Febre. Jules Febre was born and raised in a section of New York City known as the Lower East Side. At the age of 13, Jules spent three months in India; two of which were spent in Mysore studying Ashtanga Yoga with Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois. During that time he was invited to share satsang with Swami Nirmalananda and Shyam Das, two radical yogis that have each contributed greatly to the progression of yoga in the West. At the age of 16 Jules began working at the Jivamukti Yoga School helping to clean, and is now considered one of the leading teachers of the Jivamukti Yoga method, teaching the method world wide as well as facilitating at the very highly regarded teacher training programs. Jules travels and teaches for a major part of each year, including Europe, Australia, Asia, and more. His classes offer a wide range and depth of understanding of Yoga Asana as well as Meditation, Chanting, and Yoga Philosophy. Teaching yoga is Jules’ passion. He is grateful to his teachers, Sharonji (Gannon), Davidji (Life) who he has had the privilege of studying with for over 15 years, for igniting his devotion to the Jivamukti Yoga practice and for inspiring countless students around the world. I met Jules in India where he was teaching at the International Yoga festival in Rishikesh, where we recorded this interview in a garden at the Parmarth Niketan Ashram. Jules is a bit different than most of the yoga teachers I’ve met. He has a wicked sense of humor, that he brings into his classes, and he’s clearly very well studied and only when he speaks do you realize his tremendous depth. In this interview we discuss the 5 Tenants of Jivamukti Yoga, the yogic perspective on Veganism, his experience Teaching in Correctional Facilities Yoga Beyond the 8 Limbs, the importance of Planting Seeds, and Jules gives us a deep explanation of what it means to live the first tenant of yoga, Ahimsa. As always, notes to things discussed are in the show notes, which you can find on the blog post for this episode at visionary-lifestyle.com/podcast Enjoy and Namaste Show Notes ___________________ Cowspiracy Film http://www.cowspiracy.com/ What the Health?
