Shantala Sriramaiah is the founder of Veda Studies and a Veda recitation teacher in the Mysore lineage, trained under Sri M.S. Sreenivasan and mentored by the Challakere Brothers. Born in Bangalore into a family of chanting — her mother taught for over thirty years — Shantala now leads a global community of thousands of students through rigorous online instruction grounded in Śīkṣā, the vedāṅga governing Vedic phonetics. Her courses range from foundational chanting to the full Śrī Rudram, and a Teacher Training Programme developed in partnership with INDICA. In this conversation, we explore what it means to carry a living oral tradition into the digital age, the place of women in Vedic transmission, and the pedagogy of a practice that demands nothing less than complete attention. Brenda McMorrow discusses mantra music and medicine songs. Brenda McMorrow is a Canadian Devotional Chant artist who is known for her unique and warmly embracing style of mantra music, in which she blends elements of acoustic folk, world rhythms, and ancient Indian chants with a sweetly introspective singer-songwriter's sensibility. Yoga Journal describes Brenda as having “a knack for expressing the deepest realizations in the sparsest lyrics”.  As spiritual teacher Ram Dass has said: “Brenda has a gift”, and her music has been touching people's hearts worldwide.Originally a folk/pop singer/songwriter, it was when Brenda participated in her first Sanskrit chant while attending a Yoga workshop in 2004, that she had a profound knowing her musical journey was leading her to places more expansive and heart-opening than she had ever imagined. Brenda remembers: “It was a very simple chant (Om Namah Shivaya), and at the time I had no idea what it signified: all I knew was that every cell in my body started vibrating, and I felt absolute joy”. While in India soon thereafter, Brenda began combining her own songwriting with ancient Sanskrit chants – and she has been flowing with this divine wave of Bhakti energy ever since. With 5 celebrated devotional chant albums, Brenda is a featured artist on White Swan Records, a Colorado label.. She has shared festival stages with Krishna Das and Snatam Kaur; has been accompanied by Grammy award winning cellist David Darling; has been a guest musician with esteemed Kirtan musicians Jai Uttal, Wah!, David Newman, Girish, Mirabai Ceiba, Jai Jagdeesh, Shantala and Dave Stringer; and has been invited to Bhakti Yoga festivals and events across North America, Europe and Asia. When not on the Bhakti road, Brenda calls the countryside near beautiful Guelph, Ontario, home.https://brendamcmorrow.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/truth-be-told-paranormal--3589860/support.

IN THE LAST FOUR DECADES, the ardent world of Indian devotional music has been transformed by an international group of world and ambient musicians. Inspired by this venerable heart-centered vocal tradition called bhakti, working with both traditional and progressive Indian musicians, they've stretched the boundaries and expanded the atmosphere of the genre with electronics, echoes, reverberations, overdubs, and studio magic. Slow, deep, and meditative, with vocals in classical Sanskrit, you don't have to know anything about Indian music or religion to enjoy it. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, devotional chants and contemplative instrumentals inspired by the bhakti religious tradition of India, on a program called DEVOTION 3. "In turbulent times, ambient world musicians project calm and harmony." It's an instinctive response to our super-charged environment, a way to transmute chaos and instability into order, reduce anxiety, restore regular breathing, and take down the temperature. Perhaps more remarkable, even in our electronic era, they do it mainly as they have for centuries — with traditional acoustic instruments and consonant harmonies. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a transcultural acoustic fusion of influences from South America, Jamaica, North Africa, the Middle East, Indonesia, and India — on a program called HARMONIC WORLD. As I am away for a couple of weeks, I wanted to re-air a couple of specific podcast episodes. I've chosen thoughtfully those that I think are the most helpful for entrepreneurs who think about their businesses from a spiritual perspective and are using spiritual practices to help support them. Today's episode originally aired in October 2021, and it's an interview with my Vedic chanting teacher. Since then, I've taken more of her chanting courses, which I highly recommend. Join us!Shantala Sriramaiah studied Sanskrit chanting and Indian scriptures from an early age as part of her family tradition and school education in Bangalore, India. After being mentored by several Vedic scholars, she teaches a growing global community of students through her online platform. Our discussion covers her journey from being an engineer to starting her spiritual business, along with her family lineage as a chanter. We'll get her perspective on being a spiritual person offering services in the Vedic traditions, and why she feels good about charging for her services. She shares how chanting supports you and how you can use it to summon the courage to get to the next level in your business. I hope you enjoy this impactful interview. Mantra music, or kirtan is a growing phenomenon in the west. Over the past decade, as yoga has become more popular, so too has kirtan. What most people who go to a kirtan gathering or concert will say is that it enlivens you, lifts you up– and then takes you on a journey inward. My guest for this podcast is Aleah Gandharvika, a kirtan singer who has traveled the world for over a decade with her partner in the kirtan duo the Love Keys. She's performed at thousands of events and festivals in over 15 countries – and has toured with other kirtan artists including Shantala, Adam Bauer, and Tina Malia. Aleah is also a vocal coach and facilities Bhakti Yoga immersions. In today's episode, we're going to take a deep dive into the mystical world of mantra… Our program begins with a short two-minute performance by Aleah, which, unfortunately, doesn't have the best sound due to zoom, but I decided to keep it in the podcast because you can still feel the deep beauty of her voice and transmission. In this 12-minute podcast, learn what's special and spiritually uplifting about the increasingly popular musical form from India called kirtan chanting. Also, hear about the remarkable upcoming musical performance at 7pm on Sunday June 12th at the Dayaalu Center in Winslow, when the husband and wife kirtan chanters called "Shantala" will be joined by three top instrumentalists. Benjy and Heather Wertheimer have been leading kirtan (sacred chanting) worldwide since 2001 as the duo "Shantala". As is said on the Dayaalu Center website: "They are known for their special gift of bringing the audience into a vast and loving experience through their unique blend of exquisite voices with instruments of India and the West. Together they create music with beauty, passion, and reverence." BCB's interview guests include Tyler Ryan, the production and creative director for Shantala, and Jeny Vidal, a program director at Dayaalu Center, who describes the remarkably varied activities and services that are available at the Center. Tyler describes each of the five musicians who will perform on June 12th. For example, in addition to the Shantala duo, Steve Gorn is a Grammy Award winning Indian classical music performer on the bansuri. Bibi McGill is a powerful guitarist who also serves as musical director on tour with Beyoncé. And Sean Frenette is an instrumentalist who has performed three times at Carnegie Hall. Kirtan chanting is typically a call and response participation, but you are welcome to come and enjoy and listen, whether or not you choose to participate in the chants.
