When Chris Harper crossed the finish line triumphant in the Giro's Queen stage, Australia's cycling community rode on the back of his shoulders. The Domestiques is privileged to have the toast of Aussie cycling as special guest in this week's episode. How did he do it? What were the tactics? How significant is the result to his career? And does Harper have ambitions of chasing the General Classification at future Grand Tours? This episode is one to savour as the team reflects on one of the most memorable Giro's in recent memory.

Become part of the “Science of Sport” Discourse community via Patreon.Show notesThis week on Spotlight, we take a tour through some of the big stories in sport and sports science right now—from race tactics and concussion protocols to doping ethics, expert credibility, and how we identify and develop talent. We start with a lively discussion on the Giro d'Italia and that gravel stage. Was it thrilling unpredictability—or dangerous chaos? As the General Classification gets a dramatic shake-up, we debate whether the pursuit of entertainment justifies what some see as random, unfair risk and compromised race integrity. Do stages like this belong in a Grand Tour, or are they an unwelcome injection of chance into a sport built on precision and control? From there, we shift to cycling's ongoing concussion challenges. Jonas Vingegaard's recent comments compel questions about whether current policies do enough to manage brain injuries. Despite a policy that asks multiple people in the race to identify possible cases, the sport appears to be struggling to accurately identify who gets tested, when and how. Are critical medical decisions still slipping through the cracks because the wrong people, with misaligned incentives, are being asked to make them under pressure? Then it's time for our first featured topic: the evolution of the Enhanced Games. With swimmer James Magnussen chasing a chemically-aided world record and a million-dollar prize, we unpack the ethical and medical dangers of performance enhancement. What are the risks—for athlete health, for fairness, and for the messages it sends to the next generation?Next, we ask: How do you know who to trust? In an age of slick communication and pseudo-expertise, we explore the credibility of experts, and discover why true experts often sound less confident, not more. Ross explains how confidence can be a red flag, and why uncertainty and nuance are often markers of real scientific thinking. Finally, we dive into the messy reality of Talent ID. Ross explains four common errors—especially the “ghosts” created when resource-strained systems make early, high-stakes decisions that can harm both performance and people. We close with a brief segment on doping in Ironman, and why the “contaminated meat” excuse likely doesn't hold up—though science says it's not entirely impossible.LinksVingegaard on his concussion omissionThe UCI Concussion Policy that identifies all the right people to call for tests, but that frequently seems not to achieve thisDavid Epstein's recent article on fact checking and the illusion of expertiseOne example of the research studies used to sell BPC157, despite being in rats and showing nothing of the sort of promises companies make Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. The Giro d'Italia that ended last weekend was the ninth The Cycling Podcast has covered on the ground, in full, with daily episodes from every stage. Over that near decade, it's fair to say that our love of the ‘Corsa Rosa' and its host nation has deepened and broadened with every edition. Daniel Friebe was initially nonplussed with the route unveiled last autumn - thinking it lacked sporting uncertainty and both historical and topographical showpieces - but the journey from Turin to Rome ended up both reviving old loves, revealing new ones and providing a compelling canvas for the racing itself, for all that Tadej Pogačar robbed the General Classification contest of any suspense. In this podcast, you'll hear some of Daniel's personal highlights from road trip he shared with Brian Nygaard - and to which you, as listeners were vicariously invited, down and up ‘The Bel Paese', on and off-course, hopefully into the soul of the Giro d'Italia. Matt Stephens chats to Stevie Williams about how his career is no longer defined by a plague of knee injuries since adding the General Classification of the 2024 Tour Down Under to his palmares. The Aberystwyth native is a shining example of determination and credits consistency for getting him beyond his form prior to several setbacks over the years. The Welshman claims he couldn't have done it without the support of his friends and family, and has a refreshingly simplistic attitude when it comes to training.

The time trial we witnessed will undoubtedly remain a topic of discussion for a while. Many anticipated a close battle between General Classification leaders Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar. While Tadej delivered an exceptional performance, it was Jonas who achieved the pinnacle of his time trial career.

In Episode 68 we give the latest updates in Week 2 of the US Open tennis, and we also review the General Classification standings in the last week of cycling's La Vuelta Espana, and the one=week Tour of Britain race. With the final cricket test v South Africa and the T20 World Cup coming up, we wonder how Jonny Bairstow's bizarre golfing injury will impact the England team, whilst in Rugby League we confirm the teams that have made the play offs after last minute drama in the final regular league games of the season. Our guest this week is Dr Peter Swoboda, a consultant cardiologist who is also conducting research at Leeds University into cardiac health in endurance athletes, with the aim of making the sports safer. Peter shares with us the drivers behind his choosing this specialist area of research and how it links to his enjoyment of distance running, as a marathon competitor himself.
We are deep into the final week of the 2022 Tour de France, and we are well and truly on our way to the Pyrenees. Stage 16 saw Canadian stallwart Hugo Houle win in an emotional victory, with little change in the General Classification. So, we took the opportunity to spend almost the full episode with Jimmy Whelan, former EF Racing member and winner of the 2022 Santos Festival of Cycling and second place at 2022 Australian Road Nationals. Jimmy had a nightmare 2021, in a story that would test the most devoted of athletes. From crashes to broken promises, and everything in between. Jimmy hasn't given up, nor has anyone that knows him. His story is one that needs to be heard, and we are proud to tell it. As always, please Like, Subscribe, Comment, and Share. We want to hear from you.
We suggest “Hopular”, a novel Deep Learning architecture for medium and small sized datasets, where each layer is equipped with continuous modern Hopfield networks. The modern Hopfield networks use stored data to identify feature-feature, feature-target, and sample-sample dependencies. Hopular's novelty is that every layer can directly access the original input as well as the whole training set via stored data in the Hopfield networks. Hopular outperforms XGBoost, CatBoost, LightGBM and a state-of-the art Deep Learning method designed for tabular data. Thus, Hopular is a strong alternative to these methods on tabular data. 2022: Bernhard Schafl, Lukas Gruber, Angela Bitto-Nemling, S. Lance, Johan, and JB reflect on the first 9 stages of the 2022 Giro D'Italia. Names come to mind for the overall that were not heavily considered before the start of the tour. The sprinter conversation is equally as interesting as the General Classification. With all the talk the last few years about the young guys changing the game, it turns out endurance and experience can prevail with a few seasoned veterans.
Christophe & Macka dissect a hellish stage and what it did to the General Classification
With over 5 minutes lead the victory of Tadej Pogacar in this years 2021Tour de France was all but decided…but the stage win and positions in the top 10 of the General Classification are still yet to be determined.
Brad welcomes back Bernie Eisel to talk over how the blue touch paper was lit on the Col du Portet for a statement victory from Tadej Pogacar over his nearest General Classification challengers on Stage 17 of the Tour de France. In the company of Graham Willgoss, the pair discuss how Pogacar's UAE team are finally showing themselves to be the strongest in the race: "UAE isolated Richard Carapaz, and we expected it to be the other way around," says Brad."Pogacar wanted to put a mark on it: 'I'm here to win this Tour,'" says Bernie. "And it makes it easier for the team in the coming days... his team just took it on. It was great to watch, and it was the first time they had to do something in the mountains."But was Pogacar, at one point, going to let Carapaz have the stage? Brad thinks that might have been on the cards, but after Carapaz refused to pull his wait on the front, Brad wonders whether Pogacar called his bluff, "got pissed off and went for it himself". The 2012 Tour de France winner also asks: are we seeing a change of mentality at Ineos?"They're kind of smiling and accepting that some of their riders aren't up to the standard," says Brad. "And it never used to be like that. Sean Yates would come off afterwards and he'd want answers as to why you didn't do your job."Brought to you by Zwift, where fun is fast. The Bradley Wiggins Show is produced by Pete Burton. Sir Bradley Wiggins is joined by Graham Willgoss and Orla Chennaoui for the latest podcast to review Stage 20 of the Giro. The Ineos Grenadiers once again produced an exhibition of General Classification riding on Saturday. The performance all but delivered Egan Bernal a second Grand Tour win, and left a stage that had promised fireworks, lacking in genuine GC action. That fact left Chennaoui feeling ‘empty'.Simon Yates cracked in the final few kilometres but the Team BikeExchange rider will likely finish on the podium, which Wiggins and Chennaoui agree is a great result, concluding that ultimately the Brit was beaten by the collective excellence of Ineos. In fact, Ineos have such depth that, Wiggins says, they could name a completely different team for the Tour de France and remain as strong. The pressure of team leadership is also debated given the contrasting fates of Bahrain–McLaren team-mates Damiano Caruso and Mikel Landa. Finally, the big reveal: Who will be singing what at the karaoke wrap party.Brought to you by Zwift where fun is fast. The Bradley Wiggins Show is Produced by Pete Burton See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

As much as I want to say DeFi and crypto is easy to enter, it is not easy to fully grasp and understand it. First you need to understand technology. Then to understand math, finance and economics. This podcast is to help you bridge the learning gaps. A subscriber (shout out to Magnus) mentioned that a general ELI5 episode would be good to run through the few common terms. Here, I've picked up 15 terms that are commonly used. Instead of giving you the "just google what it means" term, this is an ELI5 explanation with human explanation. That's the best way to learn, in my experience. 15 terms we run through and explain: *General Classification* 1) Layer 1 2) Layer 2 3) Dapp *DeFi General Terms* 4) DeFi 5) Money Lego 6) Compostability *Scalability Problem + Solution* 7) Scalability 8) Sidechain 9) Roll-ups *More Technical Elaboration* 10) ZK roll-up 11) Optimistic roll-up 12) ZK-SNARKS *Other Terms* 13) Quadratic Funding 14) Flash loans 15) Front Running My textbook for economics and math of defi and token engineering it now out for preorder! A warm feeling resonates through BeSpoke's Gareth Rhys Owen as the breakaway just kept their advantage after separating from the peloton 170kms out, with Italy's Damiano Cima winning by inches in just his second year as a professional. Richard Carapaz maintains the overall lead in the General Classification with 1min 54 over Vincenzo Nibali and Primoj Roglic back in third. Cycling broadcaster Laura Winter joins Jeremy Whittle and Gareth as the Giro nears completion and discusses whether Simon Yates has egg on his face and how prevalent mechanical doping is in elite cycling.
Bad weather and dangerous descents made for a captivating 16th stage of the 2019 Giro. The Italian rider Giulio Ciccone won, whilst Richard Carapaz remains the race General Classification leader, a lead he took from Primoz Roglic whose tour turned on its head after a badly timed toilet break. He now sits third behind Carapaz and Vincenzo Nibali with just five stages left. BBC Cycling commentator Simon Brotherton, joins Jeremy Whittle and Gareth Rhys Owen.
In the sixth and final episode of Adam Blythe Interviews, presented by The Cycling Podcast, Adam sits down with fellow Lotto-Soudal rider, Thomas De Gendt. De Gendt finished 3rd in the General Classification at the 2012 Giro d’Italia and was once Belgium’s biggest hope for a Grand Tour winner. He has since established himself as a breakaway specialist, winning stages at all three Grand Tours and a handful of week-long stage races including Paris-Nice, Volta a Catalunya and the Tour de Romandie, where this episode was recorded following the time trial prologue. He talks Blythe through his career to date, his unique riding style and what he has in store for 2019. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science in Sport.
