We finish up Getter Robo Armageddon and are left feeling very lukewarm. We talk about the characters (eh), the wayward plot (eh), and the giant robot fights (yeah!!!!). Fresh off our background reading, we dive into the "standalone" OVA series, Getter Robo Armageddon! We talk through the references, art style, and Extremely Noticeable Director Change of the first half of this show. We also finally have a real, lengthy mech corner. Devon and Tooch talk about Getter for even longer this time! In this episode we cover the final animated Getter Robo installment, released in 2004 as 13 episodes. Does this OVA hold up to the manga? Are Devon and Tooch Biased? Yes! Kinda. Seriously guys this one is worth it. (Syncing problems and volume levels have been fixed!)
Devon and Tooch finally talk about Getter again! Somehow they go for two whole hours! Will they stay on topic? Will the plot make sense? No.
Topic: Mecha Anime This week, Mom is out on Vacation, traveling the world as usual. So we Invited my Little Brother to join us. When asked what he wanted to learn about, Mecha Anime was what he said. So here we go. A primer on Mecha Anime! Tutorial: Mecha Anime: Any anime/manga/media where robots exist within a show, and are important to the story being told. Robot = Mech/Mecha Two Major Sub-Categories: Super/Giant Robo/Robot Real Robot History: 70s – Rise of Super/Giant Robot Series Mecha shows easier to handle because you don’t need to draw faces. Easier to produce in 70s. Shows largely not about war/conflicts between humans. Mazinger Z (1972) Dr Hell and Dr. Kabuto find ancient robots buried underground. Hell decides to use the robots to control the world, while Dr. Kabuto escapes and builds Mazinger Z before being killed by “half Man, Half woman” Baron Ashura. Robot is passed on his grandson Kouji Kabuto, who fights against Doctor Hell. Spin Offs Great Mazinger (1974) UFO Robot Grendizer (1977) Mazinkaiser (2002) Getter Robo (1974) Three jets become one Super Robo, but can reconfigure in to three different modes Daikū Maryū Gaiking (1976) Dinosaur like base ship where the head takes off and transforms in to Super Robo Gaiking Super/Giant Robot Series Robots are unique, one of kind, un-replaceable Fantastical/Squishy in tech/creation Heroic in Nature Stories are usually involve the Robots more as a major element of the show than a tool Magical/Mystical/Extraterrestrial/Super Science in Nature Lend themselves to Monster of the Week / non-serialized Became stagnant toward end of 80s Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) Also known as (Gundam 0079) During the Universal Century, Human have created colonies in space, but there is unease as spacenoids feel that the Earth Federation won’t allow equal representation, thus Spacenoid rally around the Principality of Zeon and declare their freedom from Earth Federation, starting the “One Year War”. Zeon has mobile suits, which are a ‘HUGE’ tactical advantage. Earth Federation Create the White Base and goes to pick up the new RX-78 Gundam, but Zeon is in tow and attacks the colony, killing most civilians and Federation crew. Amuro Ray becomes pilot for Gundam and the White Base launches out to defend against Zeon on their way home to Earth. Gundam = White Devil V-fin helmet Samurai look/motif Recurring themes Start in space, head to Earth, return to space to end Space Mobile Suits = 1 eye/ mono eye Earth/Federation Mobile Suits = glass visor for eyes Major Base to launch From, usually white in color Char Aznable – Villain, recurring theme of villain in Mask Initially not popular, canceled at 39 of 45 episodes. Rebroadcast as trilogy of movies in 1983 Gunpla = Gundam Model Kits Spin offs: Universal Century Zeta (1985) ZZ (1986) 0083(1991) Victory (1993) 08 MS Team (1996) Unicorn (2010) Thunderbolt (2015) Unique Series/Era/Centuries G Gundam (1994) Gundam Wing (1995) Gundam X (1996) Turn-a-Gundam (1999) Gundam Seed (2002) Gundam 00 (2007) Gundam Age (2011) Gundam IBO (2015) Real Robot Series Mecha are realist/conventional in nature, albeit with unique power sources/futuristic weapons Tend to be government/organization led Possible to Replace within reason/mass produced Tools of the universe Often stories about War or major conflicts Lend themselves toward long, serialized shows Super Sentai (1975) Known in the west as Power Rangers Basically Live Action Super Robo Series 80s – Rise of Real Robots Real Robot Series become mainstream as audiences begin to get tired of Formulaic Super Robot series. Many young adults were looking for more mature/serious mecha anime, allowing for Real Robot genre to take over. The Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982) Many Spin Offs Armored Troopers Votoms (1983) Volton (1984) US TV show incorporating footage of Golion and Dairugger Transformers (1984) Lots of Spin Offs Bubblegum Crisis (1987) Largely Females in Exo-skeleton Suits Patlabor (1988) Mecha Cops Gunbuster (1988) From Makers of Evangelion 90 – Mecha Revolution Real Robot / Gundam make big push in 90s, but lots of mech shows still show competition. Lots of themes / traditions come out of 90s that are still seen largely today. Very experimental. Brave Series (1990s) King of Braves GaoGaiGar (1997) Tekkaman Blade (1992) In the West as Technoman Magic Knight Rayearth (1994) Magical Girl / Super Robot Series Evangelion (1995) Mix of Real/Super Series Largely a deconstruction of Mecha Series Lots of largely psychological topics Genre Defining! Martian Successor Nadesico (1996) Vision of Escaflowne (1996) Lots of Female fans Largely Fantasy The Big O (1999) 2000s – Mecha Renaissance With introduction Digital Art/Inking, Anime become less expensive to produce, allowing more varied series to become introduced. Varying art styles allow more trial and expressiveness. Great Shows, Great stories, great characters Sakura Wars (2000) VanDread (2000) RahXephon (2002) Similar to Eva in themes Diebuster (2004) Sequel to Gunbuster Aquarion (2005) Eureka Seven (2005) Skateboarding/snowboarding in the Sky Mecha Code Geass (2006) Mechs are only about 15-18 feet tall Largely move around on wheels Fun Mix of Mystical elements and Real Robot series Great cast/show One of the Greatest non-Gundam Real Robot series Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2007) From makers of Evangelion Very silly Creators would split to become Studio Trigger One of the Greatest modern Super Robot 2010 – Decline of Mecha Mecha Shows are more difficult to get going, with lots of shows almost never finding an audience. Landscape of Anime may have changed; seasonal anime dominates, where mecha tends to like longer /epic running series. Also, many shows about conflicts aren’t as popular because we(Sic:Japan) aren’t really seeing or being influenced by war. Mecha using more CG(Computer Graphics) to make mecha in shows, but don’t look good in an animated/2D Landscape. Star Driver (2010) Light Hearted, Fun Super Robot Aldnoah.Zero (2014) Good first season, ultimately disappointing Robot Girls Z (2014) Parody on Mazinger Z and various spinoffs Captain Earth (2014) Darling in the Franxx (2018) Interesting beginning, ultimately Disappointing Review Material Gundam Unicorn 0096 (Either on Crunchyroll or Netflix) Star Driver (Crunchyroll)

Are you fans of digression and roundabout discussions? Because we are in full form this episode. Weltall sounds like a geriatric reporter padding their social security with opinon pieces on CNN by saying “millenials”. Tim keeps trying to steer it back to the show’s center to no avail. Speaking of Tim’s vain endeavor, it revolves around Getter Robo. It is likely the first series to introduce the concept of interlocking pieces forming a single robot a la Power Rangers or Voltron. There is a mad doctor who murders with zeal and built the robot, the eponymous “Getter”, and three pilots. They fight dinosaurs who’ve evolved underground and decided they’re tired … Continue reading Manga Pulse 348: Get Old →

This episode is literally hot off the press. Recorded, edited, and posted all in the same day, not to mention that I finished watching the review anime in the same day as well. That anime in question is Gunbuster, a short little show from GAINAX. Since last recording my Snap Judgements has been posted (and is soon to be updated), as well as Battle of the Koma!!! on A3KTV.Download Retweet Opening 0:00 – 1:30 MUCC – Yakusoku (Nightraid OP)1:30 – 15:30 NewsLeaked Episodes on YoutubeFapping = iPad?Other stuff I’ve been doing15:31 – 16:22 SSAA Podcast Thanks bro16:23 – 16:54 SHAFT I will be hanging with SHAFT for the upcoming Dysfunction podcast. This week Eeeper reviews, for the retro choice corner, Project A-Ko while Oni reviews Ninja Scroll! Yes I've got a co-host now in the form of Oni. Who is he? Well, you'll just have to listen and find out. He's been waiting to join the show for a while but only recently could he do so. The tone of the show is going downhill from here on in. Anywho if you need to contact me with hints, questions, comments, requests for reviews and anything else then drop me a line @ eeeperschoice- at -gmail.comAlso at GoogleTalk Voicemail @ eeeperschoice- at -gmail.comThe MyChingo flash voicemail box in the sidebarSend me an Odeo in the sidebarSnapvine Voicemail (US)+1-641-985-7800 then press * then 1723766 Please note that all images (excluding Show Artwork included in the mp3) unless otherwise stated are the respective copyright and trademark of their respective owners and licensers. Yes, the hardest working Internet launched anime in history is coming Here's hoping this doesn't turn out to be another Azumanga Daioh...[Link] Also on 25th January just under 1/4 of a million people viewed the special ending of Haruhi from volume 7 of the Japanese DVD when it was posted up on YouTube. A quarter of a million people!?! Have these people no real lives!? Oh, wait. Sorry, wrong person to ask that question... [Link] Mushishi is being courted for a release of it's l;ive action version. God, I must have missed this when it first came out. So, on the podcast no offense was meant to Mushishi fans at all. Betcha one of parties interested in the film was ADV and another was Harmony Gold. I mean without any new licences, they only have Robotech to fall back on for profit. Right? Right!? RIGHT!?! Oh here's that link to Jo Odagiri's ANN page. [Link] Funimation announced they have the rights to Mushishi the anime, Ragnarok The Animation and Suzuka. OK, let's just hope they finally fix their subtitle problems this year....YEAH, RIGHT!!!Christ, I can't escape from Mushishi! And it's been given one of the worst re-titles for this year. BugMaster! (As Weevil Underwood(English Version)): Oh no, you've broken my Great Moth! We hate that voice actors take on Underwood. Also Funimation expand their programming block on their Funimation Channel. Now we can watch more DragonBall then ever before! [Link] Bandai Visual USA have said they will release Gunbuster 2[Link] Manga Entertainment have announced that they will release the Ghost In The Shell:SAC movie Solid State Society in July. Apparently they weren't brave enough to release it on Blu-Ray [Link]I've tried to find the article on Anime News Service about Blu-Ray outselling HD-DVD in Japan but as of the time of my writing this, I've had no luck...Any one who read it can email me the link at the usual address. YouTube and Google reps met with members of the The Japanese Society of Rights of Authors and Composers (JASRAC) and The National Association of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan. With literally hundreds of thousands of copyrighted clips of anime available on YouTube, JASRAC is starting to get nervous. What!?! They're only getting nervous now?!? The GITS DVD we were talking about can be found here but is now out of print. You might be able to find it on Yahoo.co.jp Auctions but it's up to you. And finally, as I promised here is the Wiki Entry on Pentacost Reviews Air Gear Huh? Where's the review? Sorry the section with Oni ran long so it's going to be next week before you can listen to Eeeper review this. Project A-Ko This amazing movie from 1986 remains one of Eeeper's favourite anime of all time and set a benchmark for parodies of anime and manga to come. Captain Harlock, Maison Ikkoku and Fist of the North Star are some of the titles that get poked to death in this treat. Eeeper goes all over the world for sport in this review before actually getting to the PLOT. Try and stay with him on this one, it does pay off. Central Park Media released this movie along with the OVA sequels comprising of the DVD volumes Love and Robots and Uncivil Wars. Oni watched Uncivil Wars but Eeeper didn't so only the first film and part of the OVA's are covered. This film was one of three VHS available to rent from 24-Hour Video in Eeep's hometown (the other two being Giant Robo Part One of the OVA and StreetFighter II: The Animated Movie) so it got serious playtime in the Eeep household. CPM page for Project A-Ko the collected edition Wikipedia page on A-Ko ANN page on A-Ko Ninja Scroll 10th Anniversary Edition Yeah! This kick ass movie from 1993 has it's flaws (no character devolpment for secondary characters for one thing) but it's getting the Manliest award from us. It may be replaced soon ( Mazinger Z and Getter Robo are on order) but for now bask in the glory of it's testosterone! The plot doesn't matter! After all it is a public safety service announcement from Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Oni has never tried to review anything before this so his review should be taken in the spirit in which it was approached. Which is the Spirit Of Vengeance. Go Ghost Rider! Wikipedia page for Ninja Scroll ANN page on Ninja Scroll Competition Time plus other stuffYep, it's our first give away and up for grabs is the first volume plus artbox of Fafner! Yeah I know it's an Evangelion rip-off but it's brainless, entertaining stuff anyway. The competition is open to all regardless of location. Only stipulation is that you must be able to play Region ! DVD's . That's it. To win you'll have to listen in. Open Request to all podcasters! If you have a podcast promo that you think we can play on our show send them in, please! Also speaking of podcasts, we are now on Digg, Technorati, Podcast Pickle and also Podcast Alley. Please add us to them! We need all of your help! Don't make us beg! It'll be embarrassing and sticky.... PromosNinja Consultants Fast Karate For The Gentleman Otaku Generation Anime World Order Next Week: Oni will be reviewing the classic shoujo sci-fi film, They Were Eleven. While Eeeper will tackle another Kawajiri title from 1995, Birdy The Mighty plus the late review of the manga Air Gear by Oh!Great. Just in time for the anime from ADV.
