In this episode, Kristen and Carol sit down with Bri, a digital nomad coach, sustainable travel content creator, and travel blogger. Bri talks about how she initially started blogging to keep her family and friends updated on her adventures while traveling. And over time, Bri became a certified travel agent and her blog evolved into a comprehensive ethical and sustainable travel website known as Travel Munchers, where she provides in-depth guides and recommendations for various destinations. They discuss the concept of greenwashing, where companies falsely claim to be environmentally friendly or sustainable, highlighting the need for consumers to be discerning. They talk a bit about various aspects of sustainable travel, including eco-conscious practices, such as supporting local communities, minimizing waste, and choosing eco-friendly accommodations.Throughout the episode, the conversation naturally shifts to everyone's favorite travel destinations, including the Nordic countries, renowned for their strong emphasis on sustainability and conservation efforts; Indonesia, including popular destinations like Bali, Lombok and and the Gili Islands; and other potential destinations, including Figi, Madiera, Zanzibar, Thailand, Laos, and Sri Lanka.Mentions:Blog: https://travelmunchers.comIG: https://www.instagram.com/travel_munchers/Zanzibar aribnb Independent "restaurants":  https://www.travelingspoon.com/Zanzibar:  on google mapsSupport the showPlease download, like, subscribe, share a review, and follow us on your favorite podcasts app and connect with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wherenextpodcast/View all listening options: https://wherenextpodcast.buzzsprout.com/HostsCarol: https://www.instagram.com/carol_freelance_life/Kristen: https://www.instagram.com/team_wake/ If you can, please support the show or you can buy us a coffee.

5 Annoyances Or Scams You Can Avoid In Vietnam

In this episode I run down 5 common mistakes or uncomfortable situations you can avoid on your first trip to Vietnam. Some could be considered scams or overcharging, in other cases just minor uncomfortable situtations that can be easily avoided. We've all been scammed or overcharged at least once on our travels. I remember I was overcharged for a speedboat ride to the Gili Islands by what I thought were friendly staff in the hotel I was staying at in Bali many years ago. They are situations that can easily put a damper on, or in extreme cases ruin a trip. In Vietnam, there are several examples of overcharging, or misunderstandings, that typically take place around tourist attractions or areas where visitors tend to spend alot of time in. Knowing what to expect can help you avoid these uncomfortable scenarios. Come for an audio tour of the last part of my Southeast Asia trip with the sounds of Bali and Gili Islands. Bali is known for tropical drinks, yoga, ancient architecture, temples, and a welcoming attitude for tourists. But it is also known for instagram models, long waits for those aggragated posts and videos that go viral, wild parties, crazy traffic, and tourist traps. I will remember it for ancient dances and stories, beautiful instruments, offering baskets, rhythmic chopping of ingredients, and very cheap and so very delicious food. And so much culture that I could not get enough of. There is also Gili Trawangan, one island of a remote island chain, off the coast of Lombok, with it's own vibe and party attitude. But I loved it for it's snorkeling, the nightlife that resembled a speakeasy lounge, and bike riding. I loved my time traveling on this trip, but I will never forget about Bali. The faces and people I met will be forever imprinted in my memory for a long time. It was so different from my day to day life and everyone should do it as well.

They do this by linking young people to mentors & providing funding for their ideas. Some of their young ‘pirates' have even landed an internship at NASA! The beautiful Indonesian island of Lombok has long sat in the shadow of its neighbour, Bali. Things may change in future, as the coastal region of Mandalika has been prioritised by Indonesia's government for tourism infrastructure development. On today's show, Gary chats about capturing travel on camera in different Lombok locations with Senggigi-based independent filmmaker Josh Edwards. Josh's career took a twist during the pandemic, as he relocated from the UK to Lombok and set about producing an engaging travel show series called The Lombok Life. Season 1 featured broad-ranging documentaries filmed in the Gili Islands and at the Bayu Nyale Festival. He also climbed Mount Rinjani, and interviewed his local guide about his experiences climbing the volcano during the 2018 earthquake. Josh is currently shooting Season 2, and promises new episodes covering local cuisines, coral reef restoration and the Mandalika motor-racing circuit, which will host the Indonesian Moto GP in March. We also talk about the recent floods in western Lombok, the scale of development in Mandalika - and his work with an environmental foundation that organises beach clean-ups and helps protect Lombok's mangroves and reefs.

A troubled childhood and high school dropout at 15, Glenn Dawson always looked for something fulfilling to do with his life and find meaning in the lack lustre careers he'd had in his journey (his words!). Eventually, Glenn took the plunge and moved with his wife to Lombok (Indonesia), and bought a run-down bar and restaurant on a beach. He then proceeded to build a new hotel on the site in 2006, and in 2009 he built a second hotel in the backpacker famous Gili Islands. While the hotel business conjures up images of a life of exotic adventures, it also brought to light the devastation of single use plastics that were washing up on the beaches daily.Glenn had a lightbulb moment that cascaded into endless research about straws and the devastating effects they had on the planet. The project idea was abandoned and allocated to the back blocks of his mind as Glenn longed for a world that would or could have the plastic straw banned one day.By 2019, the hotels were sold and Glenn and his wife were living back in The Gurdies, Victoria permanently. Glenn's hope picked up as he heard the governments of Australia talking about bans on plastic straws, and decided to act on his idea. Applying his passion, and gaining entry into the prestigious Startup Gippsland incubator program, Glenn's kickstarted his project, and successfully made it through to the final. The Only Straw, is a completely biodegradable, compostable and zero waste drinking straw, and Glenn is excited about how it will evolve into in the future, and hopes other green products will follow.Socials:Website: The Only Straw https://theonlystraw.com.au/Insta: The Only Straw @the.only.straw LinkedIn: Glenn Dawson FB: The Only Straw @jointhestrevolution Twitter: @TheOnlyStrawMentions:Startup GippslandBass Coast ShireLatrobe Valley AuthorityJim RohnEnjoy the visual here on Youtube

Today our podcast travels to Indonesia, to the tiny group of the Gili Islands, situated North of Lombok and East of Bali. Indonesia has a few native pony breeds which is unusual for a tropical island nation. Horses have always played an important economic as well as religious role in Indonesia and especially so on the Gili Islands, as they have banned all motorised vehicles. So pony carts are the main way of transportation there. At the same time the odds are striking, no natural sweet water source, very little grass and few skilled vets or farriers. Add Corona and suddenly the situation gets really bad for most of the ponies and their owners. I am talking with Tori Taylor, an American who made the Gili Islands her home and as a veterinary technician, is predestined to help the ponies. She has founded the NGO Horses of Gili and helps to feed and care for them. Additionally she has started to teach local kids riding on rescue ponies, all in the middle of the Corona pandemic. https://equestrianadventuresses.com/2021/06/11/horse-podcast-ep-144-saving-the-ponies-of-the-gili-islands/
