Skip the intro chat: (8:00) - Start Sometimes people get so caught up in their personal situations that they become overwhelmed. Financial pressures, marital difficulties and employment troubles can all contribute to life feeling out of control. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two separate cases where men may have faked their own deaths in order to escape the lives they were living. In August 2024, Wisconsin man Ryan Borgwardt (44) told his wife of 20+ years that he was going kayaking. The couple have three children together. Ryan's wife raised the alarm when he did not return. His overturned kayak and a life jacket were found floating in the lake. Authorities became so convinced that he was not in the lake, they started investigating other avenues. They discovered that Ryan got a new passport, purchased airline gift cards and had been communicating with a woman online in Uzbekistan. Ryan Flynn aka Ryan Roth has been accused of stealing thousands of dollars over the years - including from his own grandmother. Ryan was known to set up fake charities, raise funds and then dissolve the organizations to keep the money for himself. On January 20, Ryan's motorbike, belongings and an apparent suicide note were found at the edge of a cliff in Uluwatu in Bali. Ryan's remains have never been found and many people believe that he may have staged his own death. Rusty Miller's early, regular foot surfing had competitive roots with Duke finals in '67 and '68, but quickly went brand ambassador with a national Hamm's Beer billboard ad, bombing down a sunset monster. Earning a history degree and traveling the world landed him in Australia and Indonesia, firmly indoctrinated into surf cinema canon with a featured presence in Morning of the Earth at Uluwatu, by Alby Falzon. Teaching surfing in Byron Bay and hanging with his wife, Tricia (alumni of Surf Stories Podcast), and his two daughters' families, is his latest masterpiece. Enjoy this chat with Rusty. Pantai Cinta, Love beach The words Pantai Cinta translate directly to Beach love. While that should be more like Lover's Beach or beach of love it sure is a beautiful place. It is quite incredible because it is a mixture of sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and a beautiful sloping green terrace area where little shops are set up. In Bali, the sun sets at nearly the same time every day. It does vary a bit here and there with the season. When the roads get busy it is because of two things. People are either getting off work or heading out to see the sunset. The ritual of a sunset. To me, every sunset is special to watch. It never gets old because I love to people-watch during this time. The kids, the teenagers, couples, and families young and old all come out to experience the end of another day. One cannot blame them. At times I have witnessed incredible colors and even lightning and sunset at the same time. This was something incredible to witness. Watching the sunset and the brilliant orange and gold colors light up the ocean. Yet as the sun was poking out the lightning could be seen in the clouds to the right. No matter where you are the beach is not far. Bali is not huge, so in general, the beach is close. Yet the farther you are from the main tourist attractions the more special the sunsets become. Yes, besides the obvious of having fewer people around, the most amazing part for me is the locals. When you wander off the beaten path and head out further and further, you can experience the simple life. Local families come out to the beach, with kids playing in the rivers as the freshwater rivers meet the ocean. These inlets are incredible. They carve their way down the mountain and towards the ocean, but they transform the beach every day. The sandy shores get moved, pushed, and eroded in different ways each day. The beach is alive, so each visit is different. The sunset. It is a calm and romantic time. Couples and families dance in the shadows while dogs chase each other up and down the beach. Kids playing soccer, throwing a Frisbee or just chilling with coconut drinks. Pantai Cinta is not different. But it is a special place for couples because of the stadium-like terraced plots that have been carved out. Usually seated on beanbags, it is a special time for locals to chill and watch the end of another day. Then after the sunset, there is traffic to get back home. In the end, it is worth it. If one sticks around for another hour or so, they may witness further light shows when the sky turns an orange, turquoise blue before darkness sets in. If you are in Bali, you would be a fool to miss the amazing sunsets in Uluwatu, Pantai Cinta, or the ones in Seminyak and Canggu. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zsolt-zsemba/message
Don't put things off, tomorrow may never come. Appreciate the little things. Today I went to grab lunch at a small restaurant near me in Ubud. Just goes to show you that a simple Google and a few photos are not enough in today's world. The map showed the restaurant and the lovely views so I took off on my scooter. My backpack as always was filled with my laptop, chargers, two phones, and my glasses are a must. I never know where I will end up. Having two phones sucks but it's the only way to separate business from personal use. My battery on the Mac is dead, it will last about 15 seconds without the charger. Same deal with the other phone, so it always needs to be near a charger or very little use before it dies. I had to bite the bullet on the new iPhone because it was simply a necessity. Off I went. As I said, I never know where I will end up. This time I visited Sommy restaurant in Ubud and wouldn't you know it, it was part of a small resort. There were individual cabins in the middle of a rice field and the restaurant belonged to the resort. No matter, I was impressed by the view and as seen in the photo. I am sure the locals think the rice fields look nice. When I was a kid I loved the rolling hills of corn fields and how we used to run around and get lost in them. Somehow, this all feels different and this leads to an interesting chat with Pak Made or Mr. Made. Never explore Bali. As I mentioned, I was getting ready to leave for lunch, when Mr. Made stopped me. He is a very gracious host and I like to chat with him. He casually asked where I was headed, and I said I was going for lunch he told me of a place where the locals like to go. This was not the point. I check out from this lovely little place on September the third 2022. I was telling him I want to go to Candidasa. It is a sleepy little town near the ocean and he said it is a lovely place. While talking, I told him how members of my small team never get out and explore Bali. For example, the places we shot content and social media videos for villas and clients were about an hour and a half from my team's home. When they said they have never been I was shocked. I mean Uluwatu is by the cliffs with incredibly stunning sunsets. Yet my husband and wife team had never been. Bedugul, a place that I have written about several times was so far off their radar that they had only gone there when we took some photos for an Airbnb villa. Feel free to check out that link. We think we have time. We all do it. We procrastinate and wait, we put things off another day and we plan for tomorrow. Tomorrow may never come. A friend of the family was in Thailand, he stepped off the curb, looked the wrong way and got hit by a bus. To this day his wife feels he is alive and does not believe his death because she never got to say goodbye. A sad story to end the blog on but such is life. I told my team that they are living in Bali, Island of the Gods and they have seen way less of it than I have. I am their tour guide and I am the one who makes them get out of the house and that is because of work and the content we are shooting for others. Don't put things off, tomorrow may never come. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zsolt-zsemba/message
As much as I love recording in Bali, it has it's challenges. It feels that nowhere is safe from the screeching sounds of an angle-grinder, loud motor bike, barking dog, or in this case a generator from a large truck pumping water. Half way into this episode there is some pretty significant background noise. I did my best to 'soften' it in editing, however, I've never been the best audio engineer...however, Augusto's words and messages are clear and easy to understand. An enjoyable episode, filmed and recorded on the roof-top terrace of Mana Restaurant in Uluwatu in Bali, as a 6-8 foot swell unloaded across that mystical stretch of reef. Augusto and I check-in, talk breath-holding, managing stress under duress, his Peruvian roots, free-diving experiences, challenges and hopes for the future.Astungkara,ShanAugusto supports and advocates for: SELF-AWARENESSCheck-out his Survival Apnea course: Here. Thanks to the THT affiliates! What does it mean to be happy? What is unhappiness? Can we learn how to 'switch' our happiness on & off, or is our happiness entirely out of our control? In the end, is it even possible to achieve true happiness? In this How To Die Happy Chinwag, Martin O'Toole has a conversation with Uluwatu's very own cosmic wizard and surf mecca proprietor, Jake Mackenzie, about the meaning of happiness. As the intro suggests, there are many ways to approach the subject of happiness. Perhaps, the most obvious way to start is to discuss what happiness is and its many facets. For example, owning a big house, car, and healthy bank balance is happiness for some. In contrast, others are happy owning nothing, feeling free of energetic ties through this minimalistic and straightforward approach to living. Does happiness thus derive from the concept of ownership and attachment? Considering the discussion from another angle: why do we become unhappy? What makes us so? Perhaps it results from events in our lives that force us to feel unhappiness. After all, it's natural for humans to ask, "Why is this happening to me?!" But how many of these events occur without our involvement versus those that came out of the blue? Moreover, is there another way to view such events—regardless of how tragic or life-changing they may be? Perhaps, as with everything in this realm of duality, we can apply and embrace one or more contrasting truths. So instead of asking, "Why is this happening to me?" some ask, "What is this teaching me?" Which are you? And can you see the connection between these perspectives and happiness? For anyone who's followed the How to Die Happy Podcast from the beginning, you'll know we view the relationship between life & death as paramount to understanding the secrets of finding true happiness. It is in the territory of learning the arts of living that we can also perfect the art of dying. And if we can get to the end of our lives (assuming we're lucky to have a planned or expected death), then being able to say—hand on heart—"I've lived a good life; I have no regrets," then surely we can say that we are happy, can we not? Alan Watts wrote a book called The Meaning of Happiness. His original title for this work was The Anatomy of Acceptance. So it's here, discussing the subject of acceptance, where Martin & Jake kick off this charming & insightful discussion. And so, the two embark on the journey of answering one of life's greatest mysteries in an hour. We hope you enjoy the conversation. Join them now. CONTACT US Love or hate what we're doing? What is Bali Truly like? As a personal note here... I love to wake up to the sights and sounds of Bali! Normally the blue skies and the coconut trees make it all worth it. As Bali wakes up your enjoyment can be interrupted. That local rooster that you feel like slaughtering. The cats' mating rituals can keep you up at night. The overly loud guy on a scooter or motorcycle wakes up the neighbourhood. These minor annoyances do not hinder your stay here on the Island of the Gods. The tourist places tend to have these problems solved. Private villas are usually quiet. However, you can hear kids playing, the occasional dog barking but it will not affect your stay. Once more, do some research. Villa's, Resorts or Hotels? This question is asked a million times and it depends on you. Villa rentals are great for families. They are private and you get the run of the house. Nearly all villas have local staff. They come and do the morning rituals and offerings at the villas. Staff will also come and clean the yard and the pool. A chef or cook can be hired and they will cook breakfast at the time you wish to wake up. If you need help with villa rentals please contact us at Power Property. If you are choosing a hotel or a resort, there are thousands of options and price points. Personal preference is the key. Keep in mind that the hotspots are all roughly one and a half to two hours from each other. Ubud to Uluwatu or anywhere in between is not that far away. Research and Learn. From villas to hotels and drivers alike, don't only rely on Google searches and reviews. Ask around, talk to friends and join Facebook groups to learn more. Often, you will find great advice on food, lodging and sights to see. Hospital and even medical information are also easily accessible. Feel free to reach out to us at Power Property. This is especially important in today's world where Covid announcements and other political changes can adversely affect travel and world political situations. Before you travel. Several apps need to be downloaded before arriving in Bali. The local apps that are a must are available on the government websites. These are crucial to have and to be filled out for a smooth arrival. The Android version is here. Apple app store is here.

In episode 10 of the How To Die Happy podcast, Martin and Jules speak to the Uluwatu waterman and cosmic wizard, Jake Mackenzie. Jake and the beacon of light he created (AKA Drifter Surf Shop & Cafe) are beloved by surfers and adventurers worldwide. A recovered addict of 26 years, Jake has some incredible stories, some of which he shared at a cliff-side villa, with the sound of the waves to carry his tales of transformation, peace, and love. This was a truly soulful and open-hearted discussion that included cycling adventures to wizard hats, Rainbow Gatherings, ashrams in India, and advice for an addict's mother. Moreover, this episode offers bucketloads of hope to anyone affected by addiction—addicts, family, or friends. There is life after addiction. Jake Mackenzie is living proof that it's possible to live a happy and healthy life in recovery. Actually, that's an understatement. Jake Mackenzie is living proof that it's possible to thrive in recovery. Life events are lessons in drag, after all. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/howtodiehappy/message

Born and raised in North Haven, Mid North Coast NSW, Matt started body boarding as a really young grom, before getting his first surfboard from his Dad when he was 7years old. Mainly he rode shortboards and body boards until he was mid teens. He grew up watching local guys like Ian Bell, Ian Goodace, Gary Taylor, Michael Young and Mick Branch ripping on longboards and thought, he needed to give that a try.Moving to the Gold Coast in his early 20's and Matt was lucky enough to learn a lot from Wayne Deane, Wayne and Col looked after him like one of their family, spending A LOT of time surfing with Wayne, Jimi and Noa. He competed in longboard contest all over Australia and around the world at different levels, from local regional contests, State and Australian Titles, Qualifying series and made the World Longboard tour in Italy in 2011. His best results came mainly from riding Old Mal's and Logs,Becoming a mutliple Log and Old Mal Champ at Crescent Head, 4x Malfunction Champ, and a bunch of other wins at Byron Bay, Evan's Head, Scotts Head etc. He has always surfed a large range of boards, from fishes, shortboards, Performance Longboards, Log's, Old Mal's and Big Wave Gun's.In 2013 Matt started working for Pyzel Surfboards, where today he is the Brand Manager working with world tour surfers John John Florence, Jack Freestone and Tyler Wright. He stepped back from chasing the longboard contest scene (still doing the odd fun event) and now likes to chase bigger swells paddling into many at places like Pipeline, Waimea Bay, Shipsterns, Cloudbreak, Uluwatu etc. In 2018 at Uluwatu with one of the biggest swell's in over 30 years Matt paddled into some of the biggest waves ridden in Indonesia. Nowadays his favourite waves are Pipe, Waimea Bay, Uluwatu, & Lovers.

Steve Levine may really be the most interesting man in the world. From a young age growing up on the Westside of Los Angeles he had a zest for adventure and was particularly lit up by his passion for surfing. This first led him to attend college in Santa Cruz where he charged infamous surf breaks like Mavericks with menacing waves in frigid waters littered with great white sharks. Coming from a prominent real estate family, Steve was expected to go to law school after college and was on a trajectory for a lucrative career as a power broker in Los Angeles. A surf trip to Bali in the early 1990s changed his plans. After becoming close friends (and eventually business partners) with a local gentleman from Uluwatu Steve decided to take the road less travelled. He followed his bliss and gave up everything and everyone he knew in Los Angeles to build a new life in Bali. After immersing himself in the local culture for many years and learning the language Steve became a well known local figure in Uluwatu and forged strong relationships throughout Indonesia. Luck , timing and tight relationships put him in a once in a lifetime position to acquire a significant ocean front parcel overlooking the infamous Uluwatu surf break from a local family. This moment set Steve on a path he still follows today. Over the years, with his local partner, developed a luxury boutique hotel in front of the famous surf break and a second surf camp on a remote island with 30 inhabitants. This is a unique story about following your bliss, turning your passion into your life's work and seizing the opportunity when it arrives. Discover with me their stories, their greatest successes, amazing behind the scenes and much more! Today with us is Jake Mackenzie, founder of the legendary Drifter Surf Shop in Bali. We discussed with him about the history of Drifter, his surfboards collection, key tips for opening a surf shop and much more!
https://terriblehappytalks.com/Jake Mackenzie is a husband, father, surfer, waterman, entrepreneur, and when the Bombie at Uluwatu is breaking...he is often the guy paddling into the best waves of the day. Like many of us, Jake wears numerous hats in his life, however, personally I see a clean living family man, and a passionate surfer, who possesses a keen sense of spirituality. Over the years, I have found myself magnetically drawn into his “anti-surf, surf shop” - Drifter at Bingin Uluwatu. Its a space that has an immediate warmth, coupled with inspiration found in the boutique range of surfboards, artwork and books it has in stock. Fresh from a surf trip to Sumba, in this week's episode, Jake is with from his home in Uluwatu, Bali to share his journey, experiences, challenges and hopes for the future.Jake advocates for:PEACE DAILY MEDITATIONSea Shepard https://www.seashepherd.org.au/Checkout his surf shop:https://driftersurf.com/Thanks to INDOSOLE AND TECTONIC COFFEE for supporting the showI feel so blessed to be affiliated with these companies. Hello, horizontal lover. horizontal is the podcast about sex, love, and relationships of all kinds, recorded while lying down. This is Season 4, my Season of Experiments. This season marks the first time I’ve ever recorded remotely. So, many times, I’m no longer in the same bed as my guest— which is already a grand experiment in itself, as every single episode of my first three seasons was recorded in person, lying down, wearing robes, shoulder-to-shoulder, right next to my guest. As though stargazing, or post-coital, or in the deep hours of a very long road trip. I’m always saying that I want to expand people’s notion of what intimacy is, and can be. Remaining overseas during a global pandemic has encouraged me to expand my own notion of intimacy. I used to disparage the value of virtual connection... and suddenly, that’s most of what most of us have. And we must figure out how to make it nourishing for us… or go hungry. My mission holds steady: To make the world a more intimate place. One episode, one conversation, one essay, one video, one session, one workshop, one course, one talk at a time. So here is my current pursuit: to weave the kind of empathetic cocoon that I cultivate in person, in bed, to inspire a blossoming conversation full of raw, revealing, vulnerable, genuine intimacies, with someone who is horizontal literally across the world. In this, and the following three episodes, I lie down with the delicious Kelsey Grant, known on Instagram as @radicalselflove. She is my new friend. And I feel very proud to say so. Apropos of this season’s overarching intimacy-across-distance motif, we have not yet met in person. I look forward to the day when I can put my arms around Kelsey and squeeze. Kelsey is a Love Educator, an incisive writer, a boundaries expert, a singer and creatrix of various mediums, and a powerfully tender woman. She has a generous laugh, and her wisdom is free of bullshit. She’s in it, she doesn’t pretend to be otherwise, and that’s what makes her a whole, human, and a great leader. I have much to learn from her, and I imagine you will, too. Half of our episodes will be available in all the podcast places for all horizontalists, and the other episodes will be available exclusively to patrons of the horizontal arts. You can become a patron right this instant for access to The Full Horizontal by navigating directly to patreon.com/horizontalwithlila When you become a patron, I send you a personal thank-you video (with a Happy Dance). If you seek guidance for your intimate struggles, I offer Personal Intimacy Roadmap Sessions: 60-minutes of judgement-free, sex-positive guidance… with a takeaway plan (your roadmap)! What ails you in the realm of sex, love, & relationships of all kinds? To schedule, email lila@horizontalwithlila.com and I’ll send you a fun form to fill out (well, I think it’s fun; I made it) so I can best prepare for you. One of my happy clients said, “I’ve had a lot of therapy. But you give advice a therapist cannot give.” Bam! Here, in my first experiment with Kelsey, we scrap the structure, and instead of starting at the very beginning (a very good place to start), as a classic horizontal episode does, we start from the very right now (also a very good place to start) with the question, “What is alive in you?” And that is how this episode came to be all about nourishing female friendship, envy, & backstabbing, the 6-month inner circle vetting process, mother-wounds, getting kicked out of the house as a teenager, emotional release & worrying about the neighbors, swamping, resisting the codependent parental undertow, & how Kelsey and her best friend heal by re-parenting each other. This episode was mixed and mastered by Irving Gadhoury of IGrecording.com. My cover art was illustrated by Shana Shay, whom you can find on 99designs. The remix of my original intro music was created by kidmental, an acapella beatbox musician, and a Black creator you can support right now on Fiverr or Patreon. In next week’s exclusive, patrons-only episode, we talk about my best friend, the defining factor of a tier one inner circle friendship, virtual and in-person connection, the ability to hold simultaneous conflicting emotions, nerding out, my weekly Covid-era ritual of Escapist Animated Movie Night, & how Kelsey’s ability to express loving boundaries with me, marks the beginning of a beautiful friendship. To gain access to the next episode (and all the other part twos, or threes and fours going back to the beginning), navigate to patreon.com/horizontalwithlila and become a patron of the horizontal arts! Now come lie down with us, in Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia, and Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Craig represented Australia at the Salt Lake City (USA), Torino (Italy) and Vancouver (Canada) winter Olympic Games, he spent 10 years on the World Cup tour and qualified for six world championship events. Better known as “Bud” to his friends and family, he is also a passionate surfer, husband and father to his son Ziggy. I also consider him to be one of my best friends. Since retiring in 2010 after the Vancouver Olympic games, Bud has maintained an international career as a ski racing coach and he is now Director of Alpine Sports and Head Coach at Thredbo Resort in NSW Australia…which is on the back of one of the worst ski seasons ever! Despite his desire to go fast on a set of skis, Bud is relaxed, calm and patient by nature. He is deeply connected to surfing and the Ocean. Last time I recorded with Bud, we were sitting by the pool at The Pink Coco resort in Uluwatu, a place we have had many good times together, surfing, partying and in more recent times, chasing our kids around the pool. Hello my horizontal lover. horizontal is the podcast about sex, love, and relationships of all kinds, recorded while lying down. This is Season 4, my Season of Experiments. I’ll be playing with form in all sorts of ways: with coaching sessions and mash-ups and crossovers, happenings and themes and advice sessions, horizontality in unexpected places, and other intimate surprises. In the first four episodes of this season, I (virtually) lie down with Lemarc Thomas, global matchmaker, relationship expert, sweetheart, psychology-versed purveyor of kindness, native St. Helenian, marriage equality advocate, husband to Michael, and, as he has been dubbed by The Telegraph, “the gentle but determined Cupid.” Our first two episodes are available in all the podcast places for all my horizontalists. Parts three and four will be available exclusively to patrons of the horizontal arts. Become a patron for access to The Full Horizontal by navigating directly to patreon.com/horizontalwithlila ! In our first part, episode 112. broken a few hearts, Lemarc interviewed me as if I were his newest matchmaking client. It’s a particularly revealing and tender episode for me, as I disclose my visions for a romantic relationship, struggles with belief & sexual attraction, past experiences with some of the men I’ve hurt, and some who’ve hurt me, my pattern of choosing unavailable men to love, fear of feeling suffocated, whether I’ve experienced emotional and sexual attraction at the same time, what I love about being me, and what I imagine my future partner will love about being with me. You could use episode 112 to Think Like Your Own Matchmaker, and get closer to envisioning the core of your heart’s desire. Check the show notes on horizontalwithlila.com for the series of questions Lemarc asked me, and perhaps try journaling on them, or getting together with a beloved friend to ask them of each other. If you do so with a friend, I suggest you record it, so you can listen back and see: am I exploring love in accordance with my values. This is the second episode of my four-part arc with Lemarc. Our experiment is my very first themed episode. I interview Lemarc all about matchmaking. We discuss: * the differences between traditional matchmaking and Lemarc’s modern take on the industry * his 4-step process * love coaching vs. therapy * being our full rainbow & sharing our crazy * how to not to date like a teenager * non-negotiables & deal-breakers * cultivating communities that will hold the love that we meet * The Matchmaking Experiment * becoming a matchmaker * how Lemarc keeps his vast network in mind, & * his signature love advice. This episode was mixed and mastered by Irving Gadhoury, IGrecording.com on the interwebz. My cover art was illustrated by Shana Shay, whom you can find on 99designs. This remix of my original intro music was created by kidmental, an acapella beatbox musician, and a Black creator you can support right now. If you’d like one-on-one guidance from me on your intimate struggles, I now offer Personal Intimacy Roadmap Sessions. They are 60-minute sessions of sex-positive, judgement-free, kink-aware, LGBTQ+ celebratory, gender-affirming support for what ails you in the realm of sex, love, & relationships of any kind. A session includes exercises, techniques, recommendations, homework, & a tailored roadmap of resources to use as you navigate the terrain of your intimacy challenge. One happy client said, “I’ve had a lot of therapy. But you give advice a therapist cannot give!” To schedule, email lila@horizontalwithlila.com, and I’ll send you my welcome form, so I can best prepare for you. If you desire ongoing support of your intimate growth, become a patron of the horizontal arts at the $100/month level and receive a 30-minute coaching session every month! To peruse all the patron tiers and sign up, navigate directly to Patreon.com/horizontalwithlila, and thank you for being a part of making the world a more intimate place. In next week’s patrons-only episode with Lemarc, we explore his childhood as a effeminate boy growing up on one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world, belonging and outsiderness, chameleon-like behavior, and codependency. Come lie down with us in Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia & Stockholm, Sweden.

Hello my horizontal lover. horizontal is the podcast about sex, love, and relationships of all kinds, recorded while lying down. This is the kickoff of Season 4, my Season of Experiments. I’ll be playing with form in all sorts of ways: with coaching sessions and mash-ups and crossovers, happenings and themes and advice sessions, horizontality in unexpected places, and other intimate surprises. In all my visions for Season 4, I never considered recording virtually as one of the experiments, let alone the central experiment. But the world changed. I never wanted to record virtually. I was, in fact, entirely adamant about recording in person, right next to my guest, sharing a pillow, shoulder-to-shoulder, wearing robes. That’s how it went. I felt the vibe depended on it. The depth. The felt intimacy translated from our proximal bodies, through the magic of the recorded sound waves, and into you. I thought the only way you would truly feel as if you were lying down next to us was if we were, in fact, literally lying down next to one another. But then the world changed. And in this world, recording in person becomes… less of an option. In this world, our intimate struggles have only intensified. I’ve started giving Free Love Advice on Instagram, and offering Intimacy Roadmap Sessions on Zoom — 60-minute coaching sessions with a takeaway plan. Our need for nourishing connection remains central to our wellbeing— the difference is: now, pretty much everyone is aware of that. Therein lies the paradox for us to manage, as Esther Perel says. We are more aware than ever that we require intimacy, and Covid times make it exponentially harder to meet those needs. The struggles people bring to me are so often about distance now. We ask: when will it be okay to hug our friends again? Go to a party? Dance with strangers? Do anything at all in a crowded room? How can we connect across distance? Have sex at a distance? Cultivate intimacy despite distance? Feel nourished by the kinds of intimacy available to us at a distance? How can we date responsibly, in a way that feels real? I grapple with questions like these daily, in parallel to you. It feels like a test of my superpowers, in a way. But, perhaps this is just the sort of thing I’ve been preparing for. I have a toolbox full of ways to connect, that I’ve been honing for most of my life, and my mission holds steady: To make the world a more intimate place. One episode, one conversation, one essay, one video, one session, one workshop, one course, one talk at a time. So here is my current pursuit: How can I weave the kind of empathetic cocoon that I cultivate in person in bed, with someone who is horizontal across the world? I have so many opportunities to find out! Once I embraced the idea of recording remotely, and grappled with the technical learning curve, I became enlivened by the possibilities. I could potentially lie down with anyone on the planet! In the first four episodes of Season 4, I virtually lie down with Lemarc Thomas, global matchmaker, relationship expert, sweetheart, psychology-versed purveyor of kindness, native St. Helenian, marriage equality advocate, husband to Michael, and, as he has been dubbed by The Telegraph, “the gentle but determined Cupid.” Our first two episodes will be available in all the podcast places for all the horizontalists. The second two (in which we explore Lemarc’s childhood as an effeminate boy growing up on a very small island, belonging, and his landmark marriage to his Swedish husband Michael) will be available exclusively to my patrons of the horizontal arts. Become a patron for access to The Full Horizontal by navigating directly to patreon.com/horizontalwithlila In this, my first horizontal experiment with Lemarc, he interviews me as though I were his newest matchmaking client. (Full disclosure: I am the only horizontal one for this episode. Lemarc is in consulting mode, seated in his office in Sweden and I am, in a way, on the matchmaker’s couch, across the world in Bali. And just in case you were concerned, Lemarc does get horizontal with me in our upcoming episodes.) In this episode, I reveal myself deeply. I share my visions for a romantic relationship, my struggles with belief & sexual attraction, some of the men I’ve hurt, and some who’ve hurt me, my pattern of choosing unavailable men, a fear of feeling suffocated, whether I’ve experienced emotional attraction and sexual attraction at the same time, and what I would need to feel free be all in. At the end of the session, Lemarc asks me what I love about being me, and what I believe my future partner will love about being with me. To peruse all the patron tiers and sign up, navigate directly to Patreon.com/horizontalwithlila, and thank you for being a part of making the world a more intimate place. Next week, in part two of our four-part arc, I interview Lemarc. Our second experiment is my very first themed episode. The topic? Matchmaking. I have so many questions! Thank you for listening to this experiment. Thank you for getting horizontal. And now, come lie down with me for one of the most vulnerable episodes I’ve ever recorded, in Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia & Stockholm, Sweden.

Enmeshed with little resistance from a fearfully obedient, confused, face-mask wearing and hand-sanitising public, the result for many is economic ruin, loss of livelihood, mental illness, family breakdown, poverty and starvation at global levels not seen before. All while a mainstream-media monkey rides joyfully on the back of it all. In this week's episode, Krystian is with me to check-in, share his experiences, challenges and hopes for the future. Lekker divers dus!
Kristyan Stjerne is a surfer, yogi, artist and a calming presence in pandemic times. Kristyan divides his time between California and Bali, making art, maintaining his yoga practice and connecting with the ocean. Kristyan finds his spiritual home in Uluwatu Bali, which is where we recorded this episode...sitting on the cliffs of the Bukit peninsula, listening to the sounds of the Indian Ocean bouncing waves off the reef. Uluwatu has always felt like a sacred place for me (like many) and to record a podcast in this location was a profound moment for me. Like Kristyan said to me recently "It is a sacred place for sacred souls".When you spend time with Kristyan, you realise very quickly that you are in the presence of a deeply conscious human of a high frequency. You feel safe from judgement or ridicule when you are around him. Kindness, gratitude and empathy radiate. I am grateful our paths aligned so this conversation could take place. For me, there was some real healing that came out of our discussion both on and off record (who spoke for another hour or two after the show). Mike is a father, surfer, and entrepreneur. Mike is the founder of the unique and progressive recovery retreat Further. Mike grew up surfing in California and was a sponsored pro, free-surfer for the skateboard and clothing brand Zoo York at the age of 21. Through his early 20’s Mike traveled the globe, surfing and gaining exposure for the brand. These days, when Mike is not spending time with his daughter Maya or working on the development of his unique rehab program, he can often be found chasing extra-large Indonesian swells around the archipelago or just charging some of his local surf breaks such as Padang Padang and Temples at Uluwatu. Mike is soft-spoken in his approach, powerful in his drive to help others, and continually focused on being the best version of himself. Tai Graham is a professional free-surfer, entrepreneur, curator, businessman, club promoter, music lover and most importantly, a loving family man. Based in Bali for over a decade, Tai landed on the Island of the Gods (Bali) in search of a lifestyle that included pumping waves, good food, and good people. Since making the decision to settle full-time in Bali, Tai has made his mark by masterminding and co-founding the iconic, bar, restaurant and live music venues; Single Fin at Uluwatu and The Lawn at Canggu. Tai has a deep appreciation for the local people and culture. He works to support the community and help protect the natural environment in all that he does. Tai is affectionately known as “Buddha” to his friends and he always seems to make time for everyone he meets, even when the surf is pumping or he is chasing swells around the archipelago. He is approachable, kind and committed in all that he does- you just have to watch him charging extra-large swells to understand his level of commitment. " Mad" Mark Baker is a skateboarder, entrepreneur, business owner, club promoter, health enthusiast, animal lover and... well, I don’t even know where to start? Basically, he is an enigma of positive energy and someone who has led, what can only be described as a surreal life. When he literally ran away with the circus at just 9 years old, his intensity and lust for life were obvious early on. Since then, Mark became Britain’s first-ever professional skateboarder in the ’70s, a member of the legendary Dogtown and Z-boys (yes, the Californian crew that birthed modern-day skateboarding). He toured the world, skateboarding with the likes of Tony Alva. He co-owned and managed legendary nightclubs in New York; Lotus, Double 7 and the list goes on. Mark’s kindness, sincerity and innate empathy for others resonate throughout everything he does. Mark has found his happy place in Bali where he owns and manages Beach Garden, Juice press New York, In The Raw, and he is the Ambassador For Fun at Omnia nightclub in Uluwatu. Nowadays, Mark lives with his amazing and beautiful Wolf-dogs and his cats. On this week's episode, Mark shares his experiences, challenges, and hopes for the future. #3 Argot: Language, the way mankind communicates through voice and mainstream culture. Early south-east Asian music; kecak performance at sunset, Uluwatu, Indonesia; record played in Hong Kong; car radio, UK; man in the street with a boombox, London; Mark Leckey interview; extreme spin class, London; Harrods video; wedding; club, unknown; family in Hong Kong; TV channel, hotel in New York; Unknown; Gig, unknown; car radio, Mariah Carey; gym class; bar, Mayfair; HXE in club; something outside the window; radio in Indonesian taxi; restaurant, China; store, Hong Kong; Unknown; gallery, last London; girl in car at 6am in Vienna on the way back to the venue (sorry). Drawing inspiration from a story during a journey to the abandoned Arctic settlement of Pyramiden, Ubi Sunt is the culmination of years of collected sonic moments. It was said that from this archipelago in the far north, left behind by all of its 1000 inhabitants for over a decade, ‘ghost’ radio signals had suddenly been detected. A singer whose family were from the original town had been sent an anonymous cassette tape, with recordings of them picked up from the region. Ubi Sunt is a new audio work by Flora Yin-Wong, commissioned by Somerset House Studios, composed of a tetralogy of sound pieces that abruptly jump between, cut up and stitch over six years of recordings captured in known and unknown locations - unlabelled and often lost sources. The connection between memory, emotion, and recorded moments that have accumulated on an iPhone is something that everyone could have their own version of. Hundreds of these snippets represent connections between the recall of memories, alternate worlds and spaces intangible, yet can be connected to across physical spaces. In collaboration with artist Go Watanabe, the series will be accompanied by artwork that adopts the underlying themes via the camera work of the film. The scene slowly moves horizontally from left to right, which reminds of the viewer the movement of playing cassette tapes, or driving a car through a road. Household objects are placed as if they are constructing a town. The objects were developed submerged in natural light from a window, but for this piece, the shade remains on the surfaces in a new space of absolute darkness. The remaining shadows are the metaphor of memories that carried from the past, said to emerge as ghosts. Varying from the sound of deep crunching snow in a forest in Hokkaido, Turkish EDM on the car radio, the rush of a reservoir in rural Wales, Buddhist monks chanting in Hangzhou, K-Pop in a teen clothing store in Seoul, and old vocal recordings - fragments that shift from the highly personal, nostalgic, to the extremely banal, or contrived and obnoxious are momentarily placed together. Flora Yin-Wong is a London-born, Chinese-Malaysian artist working with field recordings, dissonance, and influences from contemporary club culture.

Grab a copy of Brett's Book --> http://brettcampbell.net/book Hello, it’s Brett Campbell here and today I want to talk about the power of giving. I would to share with you a story that’s really close to my heart. A few months ago my wife Emily and I were travelling in the beautiful country of Bali. If you have never been there, I would highly recommend you to go over there, despite all the possible bad media you may have heard about, but if you go to the right places, it’s absolutely beautiful. It’s almost like my second home. We like to spend a few days in the built up, busier area, around the shops and cafes and so forth. But we always like to spend a couple of days connecting with nature and ourselves in a more secluded area. We were spending a few days of what we would call ‘the seclusion component’ to our holiday. We were staying at a nice little resort in Uluwatu, which is at the bottom of the island. After spending the day at the beach, we were cruising around the streets on our scooters and on our way back to the hotel to grab some lunch we noticed in the distance what looked like to be a small trailer moving very slowly, but as we proceeded closer, it was actually an elderly gentleman. If I have to predict the age, I have to say 70+ and on this gentleman’s back, I couldn’t believe it, there were literally bags and bags of things he was just carrying which ended up being every item that he owned. It was his life, he was walking around the streets with his life on his back and that really struck me. I thought wow! I have seen homeless people before but this particular person somehow just resonated with me. As we proceeded closer, I did the check out, as you do and I looked down at his feet and he had no shoes on and literally his feet had dried blood from walking on stones, he had cracks and cuts in to his feet and I was thinking: ‘oh my gosh, this is horrific.’ He is carrying his life on his back, he was using an old stick as a walking stick, and I could tell his hips and everything were all out of alignment. It just really touched me and Emily and we both thought lets go and get him some shoes, and tried to imagine what he would feel like, as it looked like he had never worn a pair of shoes in his life. We didn’t have any shoes to give him as we both had bare feet. The preference is don’t ride a scooter with bare feet but we thought when in Bali! We jump back on the scooter and cruise back to the hotel and I grab my havianas/ thongs/jandals whatever you want to call them wherever you are,( for my American friends ‘flip flops), and we went back to find this gentlemen. And literally he had maybe moved about 40 meters and then we pulled over and we preceded to approach the gentlemen and say “hello” and he didn’t understand a word of English but there seems to be this universal language that everyone seems to understand and it’s the language of energy: you just feel when something is happening and this gentlemen, you can see in his eyes, they totally light up, because he knew that I think he knew what was about to happen, so I grab my thongs and I said that: “Look, we want to give you these.” And we put them down on the ground in front of his feet and you can see he was struggling to even stand on one foot, he was out of balance, because again he was carrying his life on his back and he went to put on the thong and I can tell you he didn’t know really what to do, because the thong part lined up in the wrong toe and so we have to take it back off and almost do a shoe fitting on his foot. And at the time something happened that was quite remarkable; along the street there were residents who came out of their home, stopping to look at what was happening and were probably thinking “what are these guys doing”, and they stopped to look at what was happening, they could see what we were doing and a family down the road did a thumbs up to us and I thought that was awesome.
