Nicki Bluhm joins me on the show this week. I first heard her recent record “Avondale Drive” about 6 months ago and was blown away. She jas an incredible voice and writes really interesting tunes that draw from blues, soul, country and pop music. Nicki has made some killer records aside from Avondale Drive, and also had a really cool band called The Gramblers, which she fronted with her ex-husband and Mother Hips member Tim Bluhm that have a couple releases as well. Nicki is originally from the Bay Area and while she lives in Nashville now, she stays rooted in that scene with regular appearances with Phil Lesh and Friends as well as Little Feat, with whom she has been on tour recently as a featured guest and backup singer. She's also out touring with her band, and as a duo with her new partner Jesse Wilson, who she made Avondale Drive with during the pandemic. Keep posted with Nicki and all of her upcoming shows and new releases at www.nickibluhm.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca
Episode 219: This time I catch up with two dynamic women from Nashville with albums that are journalistic in nature, chronicling change and life passages. Nicki Bluhm is a national jam roots star thanks to hear years leading The Gramblers and numerous collaborations with the likes of Phil Lesh and Little Feat. On her new Avondale Drive album she ruminates on the end of her marriage and building a new self in Nashville. Lera Lynn, a veteran of the show, returns with Something More Than Love, largely about the tradeoffs and blessings of being a new mother. They make a fine pairing of candid conversations.
In the spring of 2021 I was joined on the Happy Hour by my good friend Nicki Bluhm. I'd first met Nicki when her band The Gramblers was opening for the Stringdusters in Montana. Later she joined us as a sixth member for our Ladies & Gentlemen tour following the release of the album by the same name. Funny, gracious, and kind, we became good friends and when I started the show she was at the top of my list. We had a wonderful couple of days playing and talking and the resulting interview is really special. Nicki Bluhm hails from Lafayette, California. The singer/songwriter released her first album in 2008. She also was a a part of Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers. Her latest project, Avondale Drive, deals a lot with making a fresh start in life - after a divorce and a relocation to Nashville, Bluhm is ready to make music on her own terms. The new album was produced by Jesse Noah Wilson and features guest appearances from folks like AJ Croce, Oliver Wood, Eric Slick and Jay Bellerose. After listening to her previous work, we think it's her strongest album to date.Note: the chirping you hear throughout the interview is a baby duck that decided to make friends while Bluhm was talking!
One of our favorite female singer songwriters, Nicki Bluhm will be releasing Avondale Drive in early June on Compass Records. This is, Nicki's second solo record, a follow up to her 2018 record To Rise You Gotta Fall. Nicki has been a mainstay in the jam band adjacent communities for years, and I've been a fan since her awesome van sessions that she did with her old band The Gramblers. Now this native Californian makes her home in Nashville, and Avondale Drive marks a new chapter in Bluhm's life. We sat down to talk about the new record, but first I admittedly gushed about her performance of the Grateful Dead's Sunrise with Phil Lesh and Bob Weir back at Lockin' 2017. Taraleigh and Dr. Leah had the pleasure of chatting with ALO bassist Steve Adams and his mom Cyndy Thomas about all things ALO. The quintet dive into ALO's Tour D'Amour XV, the first inception of the band and their first gig playing intermission of a Middle School play they joined just for the intermission gig. We talk about how they have evolved as a band since Middle School and early influences like James Brown. ALO fans get treated to inside stories from Steve and Cyndy and will leave with an even deeper appreciation for the band and their manager Jenna Lebowitz. For the “Did you Know,” Dr. Leah shares what is happening when we experience love and how it relates to live music. Taraleigh gives listeners tips on how to deepen the love right now in the “Daily Jam.”Bassist Steve Adams ties together many worlds, finding a meeting ground for feel-good jams, sparkling pop/rock, dust-kicking country/bluegrass, all with a deep admiration for the vintage grooves of Motown, Stax and the Wrecking Crew. As the bassist for ALO and Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers, Adams is a national touring veteran and festival regular. When songwriting from home, Adams fires up the drums, keys, and his trusty ukulele, which one can often find him roaming with at festivals seeking out new music/buddies. In Spring of 2017, Adams jumped into the debut line-up of Bay Area jazz/rock trio, Magic In The Other, and has been exploring newer spaces still in sound and vision. Both off and on tour, Adams can often be found digging through the bins at local record stores, drawing inspiration from the great vinyl past to filter into his creative endeavors. Which now includes his own record store, Mars Record Shop, in Oakland, CA. Cyndy Thomas is a Clinical Social Worker in the Bay Area in addition to being Steve's mom and greatest champion. She brings depth to the conversation knowing the founding ALO band members since they started playing together in Middle School. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. In this episode, Corey and Sean team up with BOTE Creative Director Rob McAbee to talk about the first ever “BOTE Presents” trip. It was a product launch for The Grambler—a board that Rob envisioned as being a surf style board that wasn't necessarily performance-based, but that would surf more like a longboard. Sure enough, that's what the Grambler became. A board forged in Florida, yet with a chilled out vibe similar to Northern California. In other words, “East Coast Style Meets West Coast Soul”, the operational tagline for the Grambler. And it's from this tagline that the “Grambler Out for Delivery” trip & film were born. Rob was good friends at the time with Tim and Nicki Bluhm—of the band Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers. They were planning on performing at the Hipnic Music Festival in Big Sur that year, and Rob loved the idea of pairing music with surf to fit the laidback ethos of the Grambler board. What better way than to set off on a surf-fueled, music-filled road trip up Highway 1 to deliver the boards to their musical ambassadors. Tune in to hear how the trip went, including stories about Sean's tramp stamp tattoo, his dart gun, and a tense run-in with some super protective locals. An avid fly fisher, Rob is the founder of Bugslinger Fly Gear and, in collaboration with Corey, the creative brain behind the BOTE brand. Sound Bites“What could have turned out to be a complete nightmare turned out to be a killer week with unlimited cool shit happening non-stop... It was rad, but it was no Kana Beach.” — Sean Murphy, Director of Photography at BOTE“The planning of a surf trip is one of those things in life that ranks up there with a kid's anticipation of Christmas morning. This trip was no exception and the gear lists, the online recon for camping and surf spots, and all the traveling arrangements were made with the same excitement of ripping into those special gifts from Santa.” — Rob McAbee / Creative Brand Director

You know it has been a long since you've done a podcast when you have to go back to your own site to find out the next episode number. This is episode 69 of the Live Music Podcast. Welcome back everyone and I'm glad you are joining me once again after so long. It would be rude to not at least acknowledge the extended absence from the podcast world so lets go over that real quick. If I had to pick one reason that I stopped and I'm sure this is true for any others who have pod faded is just a lack of time and energy to put into it. This was compounded by some health issues that have since been put to bed and ultimately I just wasn't listening to as much live music recordings as I was did. Sure there were a few occasionally that I would jot down for a potential future episode but nothing much came of those. I also thought that if I did come back I could cut out a lot of the extra monotonous work that really wasn't all that necessary. So why am I back now. Really it was just a what the hell I'm going to do a podcast moment. Unfortunately this does not mean that I will be returning to regularly producing podcasts again like in the old days. I just have too many other commitments that take precedence over this and in all likelihood it may be a 2-3 episodes a year kind of thing which is much more than I was doing. There are at least a few new artists that I have my eye on podcasting, Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers definitely comes to mind. As far as these other commitments a big part of that is starting a recipe and health blog at slowcarbchef.com. Switching to the the Slow Carb diet was an enormous part of getting me out of my health funk and in that process I became very passionate about eat healthy and cooking. So please check that out if you are interested. In closing I want to thank you for understanding on the abrupt stoppage without explanation. I got a few messages curious about if there were going to be new episodes but nothing negative so I appreciate that. The music for this episode features a band that I have listened to more and more since the last podcast and although I don't usually like to pick favorites if you pressed I would have to say they currently are at the top of the list for me. This concert was recorded at the Firefly Festival in Dover, Delaware on July 22nd, 2012. I hope you like it and please tell your friends to listen as I'm sure a lot of my original subscribers are long gone. Special thanks goes out to the taper for making this show available and please support the Black Keys by purchasing albums and concert tickets. Looking forward to the next time friends, thanks for tuning in. In some circles, the names Merle, Buck and Gram don't require surnames. They're patron saints of a style of music that continues to inspire countless imitators - and although imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, Brokedown in Bakersfield is no cheap knock off. Assembled from the cream of the crop of Bay Area musicians, the 6-piece band's set list reads like the whiskey stained jukebox selection of a Nashville honky tonk circa 1972 - and they approach these classic songs with nothing less than reverence. All the key elements are here: two steps, Scully shirts, weepy pedal steel guitar, tear jerking harmonies and snappy Telecaster chicken picking. The band is fronted by the husband and wife duo of Motherhips' frontman Tim Bluhm and Gramblers chanteuse Nicki Bluhm - and the bearded Blum's laconic baritone blends perfectly with his wife's breathy and respectful channeling of Loretta Lynn. Backing them up are Telecaster twanger Scott Law and Lebo, Steve Adams and Dave Brogan from the funky San Francisco band ALO. Listening to this band's amped up take on classic country brings to mind another adage... if you're going to steal, steal from the best... or better still, just be the best.
