Our guest next time on Red Barn Radio is a ensemble we've had with us before, watched grow with much glee, and have sorely missed because they've traveled and performed widely in recent years. Magnolia Boulevard, and band of great players and soul singing who have been widely recognized for what they bring to the stage.  For instance, they took home first prize in the “On The Rise” band competition at Floydfest, a grand and growing Virginia festival attended by 12,000 people. Magnolia Boulevard is a band that makes us proud to call Lexington home. We know you love ‘em because you ask about them all the time. It's Magnolia Boulevard, on Red Barn Radio.

This episode we talk with the ethereal Bailey Bigger about her new album "Resurrection Fern" and how she has grown and changed since her last album was released.   Resurrection Fern explores vulnerability, nature, and growth, all delivered through Bigger's distinctive lens. Known for her enchanting melodies and impeccable lyricism, Bigger dives deep into themes of renewal, fragility, and the resilience found in the human spirit. Each track feels like a conversation with an old friend, guiding listeners through moments of self-discovery and connection. As a storyteller, she paints pictures that are as vivid as they are introspective, drawing on personal experiences and weaving them into universal truths. Her poetic approach to music, combined with a rich vocal presence, marks her as one of the most exciting new voices in today's music landscape. With this release, Bigger continues to prove why she's being hailed as a fresh voice for her generation. Her ability to channel complex emotions into beautifully simple yet profound songs sets her apart, and Resurrection Fern is a testament to her growth as an artist and storyteller.  The 24 year old singer/songwriter/instrumentalist has collected back to back nominations at the Arkansas Country Music Awards, been named Songwriter of the Year in Memphis, won Audience-Favorite music video at Indie Film Fest, and has had multiple songs featured on TrueSouth on SEC Television. Bigger has traveled the country over the last four years, enchanting audiences with her siren song and classic American songwriting. She has shared stages and festival lineups with Sierra Ferrell, The Local Honeys, The Avett Brothers, and toured alongside Joe Purdy and Trampled by Turtles. Bailey's voice has graced the stages of Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Bluebird Cafe, Georgia Theater, and many festivals including FloydFest, Americanafest, and Memphis in May. Much inspired by her own Celtic heritage, folklore of the world surrounding her, and connection to the natural world, Bailey's new record, “Resurrection Fern,” (releasing October 25th) takes the listener on a journey through the four seasons, and the cycles of death that we, and the earth, face every year. Leaning into the mystery and lore of the unknown, human emotions, and the wild nature within all of us, “Resurrection Fern,” captures the magic that Bailey found within her years of tuning in deeper with the natural cycles, and the primal knowledge within.  Check her out here:  Website: Baileybigger.com Facebook: Bailey Bigger Music Instagram: Bailey Bigger TikTok: @coyotecreature

Seph Custer is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Southwest Virginia. For his first 7 years in music, his career revolved around playing lead guitar, banjo, slide and mandolin for numerous rock, americana, blues, punk, alternative, and traditional bands. With a desire to combine his love for a wide range of music, and a shortage of musicians to perform the required parts, Seph embraced the role of front-man for the first time in 2014. Since then, he's fined tuned his sound over the course of two studio albums and over 1,200 live performances, combining his diverse music taste with his skill set from several instruments; all delivered with only vocals and a modified guitar. Seph Custer delivers high energy solo performances utilizing techniques from guitar, mandolin and bass to create a soundscape on a single instrument that rivals some 3-piece bands: no looping or pre-recorded tracks required. Seph has been featured in The Floyd Country Store's annual tribute concerts, covering Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Carole King, and Paul Simon. In 2015, Seph's music was so well received at Callaway Brewing Company, they named a small batch German Wheat Ale "Sepheweissen." Seph Custer & The Papa Tom Band were included in Floydfest's 2017 “Artists on the Rise” competition. In 2018, he became a member of Brackish Water Jamboree playing mandolin, joined them on tour, and performed alongside them in the “Rockn' to Lockn” competition. His first solo album, 'Where You Are' was released on January 19th, 2016. 'Where You Are' consists of 8 tracks, including 3 songs with violinist Laurel Brooke. It has been featured on 101.5 The Valley's Music Place, The Roanoke Times, and on various blogs online. 'Where You Are' was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Windfall Studios by Dave Fason in December of 2015. Seph's sophomore album, 'Beginning to End' features 12 original songs, touching on many genres; Americana, Funk, Bluegrass, Singer-Songwriter, Folk, Blues, Old-Time, and Rock, all performed with only guitar and vocals. 'Beginning to End' was recorded live on November 1st at Windfall Studios - engineered, mixed and mastered by Dave Fason, all on site. It was released worldwide on November 18th, 2017. As well as being a performer and composer, Seph teaches acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, bass, violin, slide guitar, lap steel, dobro, and music theory.

Assistant Principal Podcast Content Episode Outline  Show Description:In 2007 I lead a group of six professors at Western Carolina University in a total redesign of our masters of school administration principal licensure program. I was the coordinator of a program that had jest become fully online, our admissions were skyrocketing and our students were becoming much more diverse. The old program just didn't work, so we collectively decided to trash it and begin anew. It was a long process, building a program from the ground up – exhilarating, motivating, but also, at times, grueling. Once we had agreed to scrap the old program, our first step was to go offsite for a day and a half and develop a vision and core goals. What we came up with was this: Live your leadership journey courageously. I share all this as an introduction to an episode focused on vision, and when it comes to vision, I think many of use get it wrong.   Celebrations:Ranford Almond is my future son-in-law. He's a talented musician and has a remarkable gift to write songs that tap into our inner most being. Ranford had a big show at Floyd Fest this weekend and then traveled four hours to share a couple days with Pam and I, and his fiancé – my daughter Mara. I'm celebrating family, and the addition of a special person. I should mention that Ranford wrote and played the music for our show, and today I'll close the show with a full version of Old Soul. I encourage you to listen. The Big Idea I'm building this episode off a series of daily emails I wrote back in October and November 2021. I'll likely resurrect them as part of this show and send them out to my readers in a week or so, so if you are into daily leadership emails and don't already subscribe, head to https://www.frederickbuskey.com/ and hit a sign-up link.  Summarizing (The big takeaway)  You see things; and you say “Why?” But I dream things that never were; and I say “Why not?”-George Bernard Shaw, 1949 I have a love/hate relationship with vision. I used to be in love with the idea of creating a great vision. Then one day, a “leader” came into the organization I worked in and imposed his vision on all of the people and programs that had been there before him. Three years later, the “leader” was gone, but most (not all) of the people were still there. Those people were left to pick up the pieces of a painful and contentious series of changes. Vision is a double-edged sword. “Where there is no vision, the people perish…”-Proverbs 29:18, King James Bible Vision can be a powerful tool for good. Here is the challenge as I see it… The vision must be a shared vision. Leaders are servants first, and part of their job is to articulate the goals, dreams, and aspirations of the people within the organization. Where things are unclear, limited, or confused, leaders work to educate, clarify, and build consensus. Every organization should have a vision, but the genesis of that vision should lay at the intersection of the purpose of the organization and the people within it. So how do you sell a vision? You don't! People shouldn't have to buy someone else's vision. Instead, they should be investing in the collective vision – in the creation and implementation. Instead of selling, what if we focused on serving? Bring people together and help them clarify their values, aspirations, and beliefs.  Then help them identify the common pieces and articulate a vision – the impact that they want to have on the world. This is a shared vision. It is what we agreed to. There is no selling. And because we agreed to it, we hold each other accountable for pursuing it.  Yes, it takes more time to create a shared vision. It also takes more skill. However, in the end, a shared vision is so much more powerful.  The final kicker is that even after you leave, the people will still share the vision. How cool is that?    Creating a shared vision is not always simple. A vision really begins with dreams, and a group of people need four conditions to be able to dream:1.     Safety. This is best achieved by creating a community in which people can:a.     take risksb.     share divergent thinkingc.     trust each other2.     Space.a.     A physical space to gather togetherb.     Mental space to think and reflectc.     Emotional space to be authentic3.     Permission to dream without the limitations of current realities4.     Perspectives. Shared knowledge, experiences, and values need to be identified. Alternative experiences and views need to be embraced and included. Meeting these conditions lays the ground for developing a shared vision that works for the organization and its people.  Leaders don't create visions. They help people to clarify and articulate a shared vision. Sponsorship:I want to thank IXL for sponsoring this podcast… Everyone talks about the power of data-driven instruction. American Songwriter writes that the Asheville, NC based group, “filters 60's/70's psychedelia and 90's alternative rock through a modern lens–as if Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana co-wrote an album produced by Danger Mouse and Dan Auerbach.” The Get Right Band formed in 2011, built around the musical brotherhood that guitarist/singer/songwriter Silas Durocher and bassist Jesse Gentry have formed playing music together since middle school (25 years!). Durocher, who is a trained composer and has been commissioned to write for symphonies and chamber groups, has guitar chops that can soothe or rage, with a charismatic swagger as frontman and singer. I saw the band take an audience to a place they were not expecting to go, right to the merch table to purchase everything they could from the band.  Pressing Strings first formed in 2006 while Sokel was still in college. The band officially debuted in 2008 with their album, Where We Are, and now has a deep catalog that includes the albums Episodes (2010), Pressing Strings (2012), Life of a Tree (2013), Owe the Source (2015), and Settle In (2020) as well as two EPs, Most of Us (2016) and Morning Takes (2021). As Pressing Strings built up their impressive live show and paid their dues gigging, their fame was spreading throughout the entire Eastern Seaboard, leading to headlining venues across Maryland and Washington, DC and frequent festival appearances at Peach Music Festival, Firefly, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Floydfest, and more. Over the last decade, Pressing Strings has also toured and opened for the likes of The Beach Boys, Gov't Mule, Toad the Wet Sprocket, JJ Grey & Mofro, Rachael Yamagata, Neal Francis, The Toadies, Jerry Douglas, Sam Roberts Band, Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), Rayland Baxter, and Junior Marvin of the Wailers. Interview with The Jared Stout Band

Kicking the year off on a high note, Virginia's alt country powerhouse - The Jared Stout Band - is ready to introduce an emotive storyline about the working man's desire for love out of his league. Paired with a high powered music video directed and produced by Jamie Neighbors of Boss Motion Pictures, they follow a night in the life of a blue collar worker who meets the girl of his dreams at a bar. The only problem? She might be way out of his league. His inner monologue pleads for the price of her love as he questions whether or not he is enough for her. A song about love, lust and leaving, the music video portrays a woman from a higher class as she ventures into a small town bar; out of place with her surroundings, she finds her attention fixed on the band that is playing, while the band's lead singer finds his full attention fixed on her.   “There's price tags on your lovin, Like your heart is made of gold / Or is it something quick your wantin, Just a night to hold” ~ “Cost”   Latching eyes from across the room, the singer builds up the courage to ask the girl to dance and the two find a connection stronger than anyone could have expected. Now wondering, “What's the cost of your kiss?”, the unsuspecting couple dances in the bar as everything fades away. Caught up in the moment, they kiss and everything fades to black. Transparent about the fact that they come from two different classes, we witness curiosity, courage and the pursuit of a genuine connection despite any societal limitations.   Set to play Virginia's nationally-renowned Floyd Fest in 2023, The Jared Stout Band is well-positioned for the festival circuit. Delivering a dynamically unforgettable LIVE performance, their show has been coined as something that you definitely don't want to miss. Having previously opened for notable artists like Blues Traveler, Phil Vassar, 38 Special, Cassadee Pope and Eric Paslay, their talents are praised by some of the biggest artists in Country music. Their work has received high praises from notable outlets like Celebmix, Broadway World and Hometown Country Music. Now back with a song to be applied to a vast array of life experience, their new track has a little something for everyone who is ready to turn their luck around. https://www.thejaredstoutband.com

The Asheville, NC resident currently plays with Schooner, Better Twin, & Emily Easterly in addition to writing and performing under his own name. Carpenter has released two under-the-radar-but-stellar solo albums, Full Flight, in 2011, and Prey Tells, in 2017. Carpenter's aesthetic lends itself to Big Star's memorable hooks with the wry, eviscerating wit of Andy Partridge. Catchy, cerebral, and a little pugnacious. "… traces back through songsmiths Tobin Sprout and Matthew Sweet to Robyn Hitchcock and Ray Davies - nostalgia obsessives unafraid to dress their melancholy in pop trappings." -John Schacht, Independent Weekly (NC)      Annabelle's Curse is an electrified indie-folk band from Bristol, TN/VA. The band has developed a reputation for high energy live shows and immersive studio albums. Its members are Tim Kilbourne (vocals, banjo, guitar), Carly Booher Edwards (vocals, mandolin), Zack Edwards (guitar), Travis Goyette (drums), Kirk Bagnall (auxiliary percussion), and Andrew Clark (bass). They have released five full-length albums and one EP.    Since forming in 2010, Annabelle's Curse has toured extensively, developing a devoted fan base throughout the southeast and mid-Atlantic. They have supported acts such as Blues Traveler, Anderson East, Langhorn Slim, Amythyst Kiah, 49 Winchester, Folk Soul Revival, Humming House, The Black Lillies, The Hackensack Boys, Allison Russell, and honeyhoney. The band has performed at Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion 10 times and has played Floydfest, RoosterWalk, Fall for Greenville, NC Brewer's Fest, Music City Roots on PBS, and countless other festivals and events.

There are music festivals. And then there is FloydFest. FloydFest is pure magic. It'd be inadequate to describe it any other way. If you know, you know. Located in the beautiful mountains of Floyd, VA, their mission is to be the best music festival experience of our time. And they accomplish this year after year by selling a limited quantity of tickets to the highest-quality event experience, bar none, celebrating music, art and life in an intimate, visually stunning environment. There are few places in this world that combine music - both rising and well-known artists, art, comedy, vendors, acceptance, and genuine love like FloydFest. Lucky us to get to have Sam and Brian on the mic for this episode.

THERE IS a calm, serene spirituality about Ann Wilson in 2022 which instantly draws you to her. She feels like a warm, wise someone who has seen enough bullshit to know how to avoid it calmly, and someone who is at peace with whatever she needs to be at peace with. Perhaps that is why the soul (and, indeed title) of her latest album, Fierce Bliss, offers such universally entertaining, engaging, honest and safe harbor from these unpredictable times. It is classic rock comfort food of the finest ingredients, carrying a richness and light that allows you to escape into timeless nostalgia, 11 perfectly weighted and selected songs ranging from Wilson's own co-penned originals to breathtaking covers and collaborations. One of the premier hard rock vocalists of all-time, Ann Wilson smashed boundaries with her band Heart, the 8-times platinum, 35 million-plus selling Rock and Roll Hall of Fame trailblazers who formed in 1973. During a decades-long career, Wilson rode the roller-coaster of fame, fortune and madness, learning both joyous and hard, hard lessons along the way. In recent times, she'd managed to find a band out on the West Coast that she toured with, and as the pandemic started in March 2020, Wilson found herself with time to absorb both her life and her future. He received his first major break at age 15, performing with Lacey Sturm, of Flyleaf. This would catapult him into pursuing a promising career in music. At age 18, he moved to California and began performing as a drummer gaining success in just a few years. He then decided it was time to focus on writing music for other artists and bands. This move would lead him back east to Pittsburgh where he eventually would meet a young producer, Caleb Thomas. Together they began to create the first major project of his career. KOLE's nine track LP titled CaH20, is set to release in 2021.

Interview with The Get Right Band

We had the pleasure of interviewing The Get Right Band over Zoom video! The Get Right Band released their fifth album on May 23, 2020. Itchy Soul explodes with fresh ideas and original production--voices fade into synths, drums distort and echo through space, crunchy guitars twist and bend and rage, the bass is one moment heavy and driving, the next hypnotic and groovy. The Get Right Band filters 60's/70's psychedelia and 90's alternative rock through a modern lens--as if Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana co-wrote an album produced by Danger Mouse and Dan Auerbach. There’s a new level of maturity and confidence to GRB’s fifth release. This is all-in, maximalist rock n’ roll for grown up people (kids and adults alike) who know the world is falling apart, who know social media is rotting our brains, who know politicians are taking away our rights, and who know that art and beauty and music and love and action are the antidotes. Itchy Soul will make you remember the power of music. In the first few weeks of its release, Itchy Soul has been featured on WTF with Marc Maron, Live For Live Music, and tastemaker radio stations like KEXP, WTMD, and WNCW. Eschewing the trappings and limitations of conventional recording approaches, The Get Right Band recorded and mixed the majority of the record outside of a studio. Programs had to be learned, gear bought and borrowed, techniques trial and errored. In giving themselves the time and freedom to experiment, to obsess over sounds, and to record exactly what, when, and how they wanted, they made something singular and compelling. The album features a collaboration with comedian and podcaster Marc Maron on the gritty, existential track “However Broken It Is.” After many hours in the van listening to Maron’s WTF podcast, GRB started collecting particularly poetic quotes and eventually turned them into a co-written song with Maron. Even the album cover stands out as something unique and creative--it’s augmented reality art! Just download the app Artivive and point your phone at the cover to see the artwork come to life.Compared to their previous work, the new album moves one step closer to pop with catchy hooks and modern production, and one step closer to psychedelia with experimental effects and layers of sound--all the while bringing the very best of their signature high-energy indie rock. The end result is sure to resonate with fans of modern rockers like Arctic Monkeys, Cage The Elephant, and My Morning Jacket. The lyrics of Itchy Soul take on real world problems, from the very personal--the title track explores themes of self-acceptance, isolation, and agitation--to the very global--”Future Blood” is a climate change call-to-action with driving, distorted guitars. “Fire With Rain” combines danceable grooves with well-crafted poetry about the highs and lows of life as a traveling musician: “here we are hawking magic to the disbelieving masses, with a pink neon sign lit by vaudeville’s ashes--we fight fire with rain.” The Get Right Band’s origin story goes back to 1998, when singer/songwriter/guitarist Silas Durocher poached bassist/singer Jesse Gentry from another middle school band. A lifelong friendship and musical partnership developed (along with a quirky shared sense of humor and their own made up language), and the two formed The Get Right Band in 2011. With the addition of Jian-Claude Mears, the group gained a jet engine, powerhouse drummer (and a new best friend), and stepped into the great tradition of genre-bending power trios. The Get Right Band has shared the stage with Everclear, UB40, Rusted Root, Dr. Dog, Smash Mouth, Lifehouse, Dawes, Ozomatli, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Victor Wooten. They have appeared on NPR’s World Cafe, Paste Studios, and Nashville’s Music City Roots television show, and have performed at major festivals and venues including The Fillmore, The Orange Peel, Brooklyn Bowl, Theatre of the Living Arts, The Hamilton, FloydFest, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, StrangeCreek, and Riverbend Fest. We want to hear from you! The current lineup of Andrew Scotchie (Vocals/Guitar), Eliza Hill (Drums) and Keith Harry (Vocals/Bass) came to be in early 2016 and since then have been revered far wide for their engaging, interactive High-Energy, Funk-ti-fied Rock n’ Roll show.  Couple the abilities and in the moment spirit of a jam-band with a punk rock fierceness and energy, and you’ll get a show that will have familiar songs but with a twist that offers a listener something only in that moment.   2018 in particular brought the band many new opportunities traveling to previously untapped regions to connect to new fans, especially after the release of our latest and most eclectic album, Family Dynamo.  Last year the band toured up and down the East Coast from Florida to New York, electrifying and magnetizing fans and new folks alike with the live show and new record.  Some notable venues along that trip include The Grey Eagle, 1904 Music Hall, Visulite Theatre, Brookfield Place, The Pour House, Barter Theatre, Floyd Fest, and the Purple Fiddle.  2019 has already taken the band to new heights and places. The band wrapped up a month long “Winter Out West Tour” in February with a sold out show in Steamboat Springs (Old Town Pub), and many other highly successful and impactful shows in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Idaho.  Building on the success of that winter tour the band took to the van again for the follow up Summer Out West Tour.  The summer tour took them to many of the same places as the winter tour, but with new stops in Helena, MT and Jonesboro, AK. Consistent studio recordings, year round touring, earnest songwriting & sharing show bills with such greats as Sonny Landreth, Blind Boys of Alabama, Drivin N Cryin, Ghost Light, Eric Gales, Big Daddy Love and Bettye Lavette has made Andrew Scotchie & the River Rats one of the industry’s fastest growing Rock n Roll bands, and WNC’s best Rock band 5 years running.  Rolling Stone’s Garret Woodward gave mention to the band in his coverage of Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam stating that the band is “starting to make a name for themselves on the national scene”. Current Lineup Andrew Scotchie: Guitars/Lead Vocals Keith Harry: Bass/Backup Vocals Eliza Hill: Drums

By Adam Olenn June 2, 2011 Violinist Morwenna Lasko and guitarist Jay Pun met in a class called Music of India in their last semester at Berklee in 2003. The two found a common interest in exploring musical vocabulary off the beaten path and moved to Charlottesville, Virginia to incubate their unique sound in this hip enclave at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their iconoclastic sound has been a hit with listeners, and in addition to teaching private lessons, they have a robust gig schedule, including appearances at Floydfest and the Ocrafolk Music Festival. "One Moore Farewell" comes from their 2009 album, Chioggia Beat, and eulogizes late saxophonist LeRoi Moore. The track features trumpeter Rashawn Ross '00, who makes his living as the trumpeter for the Dave Matthews Band.

In 2002, Stuart Robinson (piano) and Daniel Michalak (bass) met on an orientation trip for Duke University. The two began making music together. In 2004, Daniel met fellow Duke student Bryan Rahija (guitar) while studying abroad in Bolivia. They returned to the U.S. with a few demos as well as some of the local flare that still shines through their signature sound. Daniel, Stuart, and Bryan enlisted Daniel's brother John on the drums and the quartet soon began making music together under the moniker Bombadil. The head of Ramseur Records stumbled upon a few demos and immediately signed them. In 2006, they released a self-titled EP. In 2007, John left the band. One Craigslist ad later, they had found James Phillips to man the drum kit. With the new band assembled they completed and released their first full-length album A Buzz, A Buzz in 2008. The album as well as their energetic live shows found them receiving more and more attention. They found themselves touring all across the U.S. and playing festivals such as Bonnaroo and Floydfest. Now with recognition as well as some mileage as a band, they hit the studio again to record Tarpits and Canyonlands. By the time the album was released, the band had fallen into limbo. They declared themselves in a state of hiatus as Stuart had left the band and Daniel was suffering from nerve damage in his hands. In November of 2010, the quartet reconvened at Pendavavis Farm near Portland, OR (where the Decemberists recorded The King Is Dead) for an intense, ambitious 10 day recording session that would become All That Rain Promises. After more than a year off, Bombadil had come back from the brink. The album was officially released in 2011. 2012 saw the return of Bombadil as they began regaining the momentum that they had. They also began test driving songs for their newest effort Metrics of Affection due out July 23rd. Although Bryan has stopped touring with the band to finish grad school, the other three have hit the road hard this year in support of their upcoming album. After overcoming every possible obstacle, Bombadil is back and better than ever before. They are hitting the road with a new ferocity and cohesiveness. They are four incredibly talented musicians who continuously write music and hone their skills. There are not too many bands these days with 4 vocalists, 4 songwriters, and a producer. If their recent shows are any indication, Metrics of Affection is bound to be their best album to date. Check out the album cover and tracklisting below.Bombadil will also be playing having a Metrics of Affection album release show at Lincoln Theatre on July 27th at 9pm. They are sure to have some special surprises in store.  If you missed the Local Artist of the Month interview with Bombadil in which we talked about the new album and debuted quite a few new songs, you can listen to it below or you can subscribe to our iTunes podcast.
