Steve Poltz is a… a.. what is he? In the man's own words, “I'm just a weirdo, a freak, a bon vivant, a rounder, a rabble rouser, a workaholic, a people pleaser, an idiot and a grateful kid who ran away and joined the circus.”Most of us know Poltz as one of the most charismatic live folksingers working today. Whether he's playing little club in Halifax, or trading verses with Jewel (whose hit song “You Were Made for Me” he co-wrote), or serenading Cayamo, Poltz is Poltz, full on and no exceptions. Hence the the superlative, announced each night, by the man himself:“This is the Greatest Show of My Life!”I shared a show with him once. Unsurprisingly, it was the same night I met Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. We became friends. Weird things happen when Poltz is around.Besides Jewel, the East Nashville-based folksinger has cuts with dozens of artists — Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Deer Tick, Sierra Hull, Nicki Bluhm among them — as well as a collaboration with the Wood Brothers on his critically-acclaimed record Stardust and Satellites. We talk about early years in the California folk rock scene. Hilarity ensues. Steve recounts what a typical show at the Belly Up was like during the Rugburns' heyday. Destroying stuff, making memories for everyone in the house except himself, since he was wasted. But we also explored more sensitive territory. Steve got clean more than fifteen years ago, after suffering a stroke onstage. We talk alot about that time, the before and after. I asked him how his motivations changed when he got clean. His answer is worth the listen alone. One thing about Steve Poltz is that he is better than just about anybody I know at making a person feel like he's the center of the world. Time and again in this interview a few minutes would pass before I'd realize he was interviewing me.Somewhere in there we played a song together, Steve's song Conveyor Belt. Steve played and sang and I did a harmony and even finagled a little solo into the deal. A sweet moment captured in the studio. This interview was the most fun I've had on the Morse Code Podcast so far. I hope you enjoy it. The show was the first time Anastasio performed in public with Lawton and Markellis, who were joined by guitarist/vocalist Tom Lawson of The Pants, saxophonist Dave Grippo, trombonist James Harvey and vocalist Heloise Williams of Viperhouse.“First Tube” was seemingly named for its placement as the first song played at the 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes show, which also saw the premieres of future Phish/TAB songs “Sand,” “Mozambique” and “Last Tube.” Trey, Tony and Russ would go on to form the first incarnation of the Trey Anastasio Band which made its debut — back at the Higher Ground — in February 1999. That concert again featured “First Tube” as part of the setlist. The same TAB trio was also the lineup on Trey's first solo tour in May 1999. By the end of that acoustic/electric tour, “First Tube” was a full-on show-stopper that highlighted many electric second sets. Along with fellow 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes original “Mozambique,” “First Tube” made its Phish debut on September 9, 1999, in Vancouver, British Columbia. One of two instrumentals on Farmhouse — along with “The Inlaw Josie Wales” — “First Tube” earned Phish a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2001. Nominated alongside Peter Frampton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Joe Satriani, Phish lost to Metallica, Michael Kamen and the San Francisco Symphony's “The Call of Ktulu” First Tube” was played by Phish four times when they returned in 2003 but not at all in 2004, the year that began a second break lasting until 2009. Since coming back from the second hiatus, “First Tube” has remained a staple of both Phish concerts and Trey solo shows  SHOW #2:           Possum53:40 – 55:09Phish w Derek Trucks Live - YouTube The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday (often abbreviated as TMWSIY) is a 1987 concept album written by Trey Anastasio, the guitarist and lead vocalist of the American rock band Phish, as his senior thesis while attending Goddard College. Composed in 1987, the thesis included an essay piece and collection of songs (recorded by Phish) relating an epic tale from the band's fictional land of Gamehendge. On the album, the story of Gamehendge is told in nine parts, with short spoken narration in between. The saga can be compared to rock concept album projects like The Doors' Celebration of the Lizard or Rush's 2112 suite.The story's primary protagonist is Colonel Forbin. Other major characters include Tela, the "jewel of Wilson's foul domain" and the "evil" Wilson himself. Several of the album's spoken narrative sections are accompanied by background music borrowed from sections of the Phish songs "Esther" and "McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters". The final track, "Possum", is the only song on the album not written by Anastasio, having been written by former Phish member Jeff Holdsworth and later added to the Gamehendge cycle.Jeff Holdsworth is a musician who was a founding member of the rock band Phish.[1] Founded at the Redstone campus dormitories of the University of Vermont (UVM) in the fall of 1983, the band originally featured Holdsworth and Trey Anastasio sharing lead vocal and guitar duties, Jon Fishman on drums, and Mike Gordon on bass guitar. Holdsworth left the band in 1986 after graduating from UVM to pursue a career in electrical engineering, shortly before the band recorded their debut self-produced album, The White Tape, though he had played on some of the demo recordings (done in a dorm room) that would later be re-recorded for that album. His songs "Possum" and "Camel Walk" continue to be Phish live show favorites.  James Casey                       ARTICLE Show #3:             Dear PrudencePhil & Friends (Casey singing)  Rick Mitarotonda (Goose), John Medeski, Grahame Lesh, Nicki Bluhm, James Casey, Katie Jacoby, John MoloMarch 17 2023Capitol Theater3:12 – 4:36Phil Lesh & Friends - Dear Prudence - Feat. The song was written by John Lennon and credited to the Lennon–McCartneypartnership. Written in Rishikesh during the group's trip to India in early 1968, it was inspired by actress Mia Farrow's sister, Prudence Farrow, who became obsessive about meditating while practising with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.[2] Her designated partners on the meditation course, Lennon and George Harrison, attempted to coax Farrow out of her seclusion, which led to Lennon writing the song. Lennon wrote "Dear Prudence" using a finger-picking guitar technique that he learned from singer-songwriter Donovan. Its lyrics are simple and innocent and celebrate the beauty of nature. The Beatles recorded the song at Trident Studios in late August 1968 as a three-piece after Ringo Starr temporarily left the group out of protest at McCartney's criticism of his drumming on "Back in the U.S.S.R." and the tensions that typified the sessions for the White Album. Dear Prudence" has received praise from music critics, with many praising its lyrics and the band's performance. Lennon later selected it as one of his favourite songs by the Beatles. The song has been covered by many artists, including the Jerry Garcia Band, Ramsey Lewis and Siouxsie and the Banshees, whose version was a top-five hit in the UK in 1983. SHOW #4:           No Men In No Man'sTAB (Casey Sax solo)11.19.2022Reading PA:55 – 2:03TAB's James Casey…Smokin Sax Solo. My, oh, my, we are excited about today's guest, a remarkable musician and guitarist who is about to bless the world with an unbelievably joyful album next week. It's coming out July 14, and it's called Wild & Precious Life. The man of the moment is Duane Betts, and the album is packed with soulful melodies, intricate guitar work, and a raw, heartfelt energy that will take you to the place that great music is supposed to take you. Dare we say, it will tickle you. Son of the legendary Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts, Duane is his own force to be reckoned with in the guitar-based rock and blues scene. After cutting his teeth with the bands Backbone69 and Whitestarr, he spent a decade playing guitar alongside his father as a member of Dickey Betts and Great Southern. He then traveled the world as a touring member of Dawes. But in the last five years, he's been on a tear: He released an EP in 2018 and co-founded The Allman Betts Band, releasing two records in 2019 and 2020. And then, it was finally time for a solo album. Which brings us to Wild & Precious Life, which is being released by our friends at Royal Potato Family. A native of Sarasota, Duane says he wanted to capture “that old school Florida vibe” with this record. Well, he did that and more. Along with a powerhouse of a band - Johnny Stachela on guitar, Berry Duane Oakley on bass, John Ginty on keyboards – all three members of The Allman Betts Band, along with Tyler Greenwell on drums and special guests Marcus King, Nicki Bluhm, and Derek Trucks, Betts has gifted us with 10 scintillating tracks cut live at Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks Swamp Raga Studio in Jacksonville, Florida in 2022.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Nicki Bluhm. A San Franciscan now calling Tennessee home, Nicki Bluhm possesses a modern, clear-eyed perspective that grabs the heart and keeps you holding on to every word. Her new album was recorded in Bluhm's home in East Nashville, and features the talents of luminaries like Oliver Wood, James Pennebaker, Jay Bellerose, Jen Condos, Erik Slick, Erin Rae, Karl Denson, A.J. Croce and more, Avondale Drive combines nostalgic country-rock with distinctly modern, sharp lyricism—an apt contrast for the process of studying one's past in order to make a better future. Following appearances and collaborations with artists such as Phil Lesh, Dawes, The Band of Heathens, Little Feat, and The Infamous Stringdusters, Bluhm's creative confidence is well-won, and her authentic voice and songwriting is all the more apparent on ‘Avondale Drive'. With no touring happening, there were so many artists who decided to set up little home recording rooms. Because we were all physically isolated, she points out, sharing tracks and flying them to musician friends was a way to commune and collaborate, giving each musician the freedom to interpret, express and add to the songs in their own unique way. One of our favorite female singer songwriters, Nicki Bluhm will be releasing Avondale Drive in early June on Compass Records. This is, Nicki's second solo record, a follow up to her 2018 record To Rise You Gotta Fall. Nicki has been a mainstay in the jam band adjacent communities for years, and I've been a fan since her awesome van sessions that she did with her old band The Gramblers. Now this native Californian makes her home in Nashville, and Avondale Drive marks a new chapter in Bluhm's life. We sat down to talk about the new record, but first I admittedly gushed about her performance of the Grateful Dead's Sunrise with Phil Lesh and Bob Weir back at Lockin' 2017.    First song: Love To Spare Second song: Friends (How To Do It) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Taraleigh and Dr. Leah had the pleasure of chatting with ALO bassist Steve Adams and his mom Cyndy Thomas about all things ALO. The quintet dive into ALO's Tour D'Amour XV, the first inception of the band and their first gig playing intermission of a Middle School play they joined just for the intermission gig. We talk about how they have evolved as a band since Middle School and early influences like James Brown. ALO fans get treated to inside stories from Steve and Cyndy and will leave with an even deeper appreciation for the band and their manager Jenna Lebowitz. For the “Did you Know,” Dr. Leah shares what is happening when we experience love and how it relates to live music. Taraleigh gives listeners tips on how to deepen the love right now in the “Daily Jam.”Bassist Steve Adams ties together many worlds, finding a meeting ground for feel-good jams, sparkling pop/rock, dust-kicking country/bluegrass, all with a deep admiration for the vintage grooves of Motown, Stax and the Wrecking Crew. As the bassist for ALO and Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers, Adams is a national touring veteran and festival regular. When songwriting from home, Adams fires up the drums, keys, and his trusty ukulele, which one can often find him roaming with at festivals seeking out new music/buddies. In Spring of 2017, Adams jumped into the debut line-up of Bay Area jazz/rock trio, Magic In The Other, and has been exploring newer spaces still in sound and vision. Both off and on tour, Adams can often be found digging through the bins at local record stores, drawing inspiration from the great vinyl past to filter into his creative endeavors. Which now includes his own record store, Mars Record Shop, in Oakland, CA. Cyndy Thomas is a Clinical Social Worker in the Bay Area in addition to being Steve's mom and greatest champion. She brings depth to the conversation knowing the founding ALO band members since they started playing together in Middle School. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. In this episode, Corey and Sean team up with BOTE Creative Director Rob McAbee to talk about the first ever “BOTE Presents” trip. It was a product launch for The Grambler—a board that Rob envisioned as being a surf style board that wasn't necessarily performance-based, but that would surf more like a longboard. Sure enough, that's what the Grambler became. A board forged in Florida, yet with a chilled out vibe similar to Northern California. In other words, “East Coast Style Meets West Coast Soul”, the operational tagline for the Grambler. And it's from this tagline that the “Grambler Out for Delivery” trip & film were born. Rob was good friends at the time with Tim and Nicki Bluhm—of the band Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers. They were planning on performing at the Hipnic Music Festival in Big Sur that year, and Rob loved the idea of pairing music with surf to fit the laidback ethos of the Grambler board. What better way than to set off on a surf-fueled, music-filled road trip up Highway 1 to deliver the boards to their musical ambassadors. Tune in to hear how the trip went, including stories about Sean's tramp stamp tattoo, his dart gun, and a tense run-in with some super protective locals. Links from the Episode Get to know the Grambler. Listen to Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers. Visit Zuma Beach.Watch Shane Reynolds' Top 10 Locals List, PCH Edition. After spending most of his career based in Los Angeles, shooting for brands like Adidas, Red Bull, and Toyota, just to name a few, Sean moved back to the Redneck Riviera. You can find Sean capturing gritty America and spontaneous moments that translate into visually stunning photography.  BOTE Creative Director, Rob McAbee, brings the style when it comes to designing eye-catching stand up paddle boards and developing color palettes, patterns, fonts, and illustrations that unite and define the BOTE brand. With over 25 years of professional brand building and marketing experience, Rob combined his love for fishing with his love for creative design when he joined the BOTE family in 2013. An avid fly fisher, Rob is the founder of Bugslinger Fly Gear and, in collaboration with Corey, the creative brain behind the BOTE brand. Sound Bites“What could have turned out to be a complete nightmare turned out to be a killer week with unlimited cool shit happening non-stop... It was rad, but it was no Kana Beach.” — Sean Murphy, Director of Photography at BOTE“The planning of a surf trip is one of those things in life that ranks up there with a kid's anticipation of Christmas morning. This trip was no exception and the gear lists, the online recon for camping and surf spots, and all the traveling arrangements were made with the same excitement of ripping into those special gifts from Santa.” — Rob McAbee / Creative Brand Director

We talked about surviving rejection, handling anxiety when you live a life of complete uncertainty, and causing his therapist to have a car accident.   You can hear Lemuel's playing and see his art on his website, here:   http://www.lemuelhayes.com/

After a brief music chat, Seth and Rob sit down with Andy Falco and Chris Pandolfi of the Infamous Stringdusters before The Dusters’ Atlanta show this past fall and confer on this fantastic band. Since this interview, The Stringdusters band has been nominated for a Grammy for its Laws Of Gravity release - which is also the initial topic here. The band talks about this record represents a back-to-the-core coalescence of the its previous releases and approaches. They discuss their thoughts behind the choice to wait for new songs to be released before performing them. Other decision points are analyzed, like those behind sharing songwriting credits amongst each other and efforts to make sure each member’s musical voice is heard equally on each release and/or performance. The hosts and guests acknowledge the varying parameters of bluegrass, and the extent to which The Stringdusters feel compelled to adhere to them. We learn the importance of capturing the “expression factor” of each player, and how the lyrical and historical context of each song ultimately informs the performance. A discussion about the band’s Ladies and Gentlemen release leads to Nicki Bluhm. Nicki hooked the band up with Ryan Adams, and these two Dusters share some Ryan stories including how they prepared for the tour, their first performance with him, a spontaneous Black Sabbath cover, how Ryan “went to bat” for them on Colbert and some funny Ryan crowd interactions. Before Chris had to depart he discussed his thoughts behind his famous “Bluegrass Manifesto,” and how it attracted the ire of many bluegrass purists. Chris acknowledges that he was inspired by Bela Fleck to play bluegrass in the first place, and he denies that the “infamous” part of the band’s name was by design. When the focus shifts to Andy, we find out that he was in many New York bands including the Water Street Blues Band. He talks about how David Bromberg and Buddy Merriam stoked the fire of his interest in acoustic music, and how Merriam essentially taught him how to play bluegrass. We find out how Andy ended up meeting the Stringdusters’ guys and how he found his way in the band. Andy also shares some of his Stringdusters experiences, including the preparation for and execution of their Lockn set with Page McConnell and Phil Lesh. Then Seth and Rob take us home with a conversation of their own which starts with a discussion of the interview and then many music topics including the Dead and Company show the hosts had seen together just before completing this episode. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com Inside Out w/ Turner and Seth: insideoutwtns.com Twitter: @InsideoutWTNS Instagram: www.instagram.com/insideoutwtns Facebook: www.facebook.com/insideoutwTnS See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

You know it has been a long since you've done a podcast when you have to go back to your own site to find out the next episode number.  This is episode 69 of the Live Music Podcast. Welcome back everyone and I'm glad you are joining me once again after so long.  It would be rude to not at least acknowledge the extended absence from the podcast world so lets go over that real quick.  If I had to pick one reason that I stopped and I'm sure this is true for any others who have pod faded is just a lack of time and energy to put into it.  This was compounded by some health issues that have since been put to bed and ultimately I just wasn't listening to as much live music recordings as I was did.  Sure there were a few occasionally that I would jot down for a potential future episode but nothing much came of those.  I also thought that if I did come back I could cut out a lot of the extra monotonous work that really wasn't all that necessary.   So why am I back now.  Really it was just a what the hell I'm going to do a podcast moment.  Unfortunately this does not mean that I will be returning to regularly producing podcasts again like in the old days.  I just have too many other commitments that take precedence over this and in all likelihood it may be a 2-3 episodes a year kind of thing which is much more than I was doing.  There are at least a few new artists that I have my eye on podcasting, Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers definitely comes to mind. As far as these other commitments a big part of that is starting a recipe and health blog at slowcarbchef.com.  Switching to the the Slow Carb diet was an enormous part of getting me out of my health funk and in that process I became very passionate about eat healthy and cooking.  So please check that out if you are interested. In closing I want to thank you for understanding on the abrupt stoppage without explanation.  I got a few messages curious about if there were going to be new episodes but nothing negative so I appreciate that. The music for this episode features a band that I have listened to more and more since the last podcast and although I don't usually like to pick favorites if you pressed I would have to say they currently are at the top of the list for me.   This concert was recorded at the Firefly Festival in Dover, Delaware on July 22nd, 2012.  I hope you like it and please tell your friends to listen as I'm sure a lot of my original subscribers are long gone.  Special thanks goes out to the taper for making this show available and please support the Black Keys by purchasing albums and concert tickets. Looking forward to the next time friends, thanks for tuning in. In some circles, the names Merle, Buck and Gram don't require surnames. They're patron saints of a style of music that continues to inspire countless imitators - and although imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, Brokedown in Bakersfield is no cheap knock off. Assembled from the cream of the crop of Bay Area musicians, the 6-piece band's set list reads like the whiskey stained jukebox selection of a Nashville honky tonk circa 1972 - and they approach these classic songs with nothing less than reverence. All the key elements are here: two steps, Scully shirts, weepy pedal steel guitar, tear jerking harmonies and snappy Telecaster chicken picking. The band is fronted by the husband and wife duo of Motherhips' frontman Tim Bluhm and Gramblers chanteuse Nicki Bluhm - and the bearded Blum's laconic baritone blends perfectly with his wife's breathy and respectful channeling of Loretta Lynn. Backing them up are Telecaster twanger Scott Law and Lebo, Steve Adams and Dave Brogan from the funky San Francisco band ALO. Listening to this band's amped up take on classic country brings to mind another adage... if you're going to steal, steal from the best... or better still, just be the best.
