Send us a textJaime is booted from King's Landing by Cersei to settle matters in the Riverlands. He finds a sparring partner, installs new leadership at Harrenhal, and sends Wylis Manderly home. Finally, he defends the honor of Brienne of Tarth. Mackelly and Simon give high fives.Chapter Review:Jaime Lannister thinks the plan is folly. Queen Cersei doesn't care for his opinions on the matter. He'll go to the Riverlands, sort out Harrenhal, find Wylis Manderly, and end the siege at Riverrun. Jaime reluctantly agrees but insists on having Addam Marbrand and Ilyn Payne accompany him. Throughout their journey, Jaime finds a private place for Ser Ilyn and him to spar. Ilyn soundly defeats Jaime at every opportunity, and Jaime chose him as his partner because the silent knight can't tell anyone the embarrassing details.Once at Harrenhal, Jaime is disappointed to learn that no Bloody Mummers are captives but is pleased that Wylis Manderly is alive and in one piece. Jaime announces that Bonifer Hasty will take command of the castle. Bonifer wants no part of Gregor Clegane's men, so Jaime agrees to take them with him to Riverrun. At dinner, Ser Bonifer insists his Holy Hundred warriors can hold the castle, and Jaime hopes they can fight as well as they pray.Jaime leaves Ser Bonifer to find Ser Ilyn. Instead, Jaime finds Ronnet Connington overlooking the bear pit. Red Ronnet wanted to see where Brienne of Tarth fought the bear. He tells Jaime that he and Brienne were betrothed once. However, upon their meeting, he rejected the girl. Ronnet says the bear was surely less hairy than that freak. Jaime socks him in the face with his golden hand, sending Ronnet tumbling. Cersei meets with her new handpicked Small Council who blithely make momentous decisions with huge ramifications. Simon and Mackelly watch on in despair.Chapter Review:Queen Cersei is, not for the first time, disappointed to find the severed head of the wrong dwarf presented to her. She offers no punishment to the murderers for fear of deterring those hunting Tyrion. She and Qyburn head to the Small Council. He has prepared the skull to be sent to Dorne to satisfy the Martell's grievance against the now, presumably dead, Gregor Clegane.The Small Council is at full complement - with men Cersei has personally elevated not because of obvious talents for their positions, but due to perceived loyalty. It doesn't make for a very thoughtful meeting. They decide to stay out of the trouble in the Vale, but demand that no harm befall Petyr Baelish. That they'll ignore the flock of Sparrows that continues to descend on King's Landing. That they have no idea who the next High Septon will be. That the grumblings from the masses about the crimes of the Red Wedding are best dealt with by waiting for Lord Frey to die and hoping that his successor will give up a few rivals as scapegoats. That to pay for a new royal fleet the crown will default on its loan payments to both the Faith and the Iron Bank of Braavos. That Lord Manderly should execute Ser Davos who came to ask for White Harbor's support for Stannis' claim. That news of dragons in Essos can be safely ignored. And that Jon Snow has betrayed the neutrality of the Night's Watch by siding with Stannis.Cersei arranges a complex plan involving Osney Kettleblack seducing Queen Margaery, being caught in the act, sent to the Wall by King Tommen, murdering Jon Snow, being pardoned, and then becoming Cersei's concubine for his service. A tall order, but if he pulls it off, then a Lannister always pays their debts. Busy day for Queen Cersei. She fends off mourners expressing regret and vying for her favor and works to keep the Tyrells off the Small Council. She bonds with Qyburn before finally having a highly contentious dinner with her uncle. Mackelly and Simon are in shock that Kevan went there.Chapter Review:Queen Cersei Lannister and King Tommen kneel before her father Tywin's body. The odor emanating from the late Hand of the King is not missed by those in attendance, so all are glad when the prayers end. Afterward, mourners approach Cersei to express condolences. Falyse Stokeworth offers that if her sister Lollys has a son, they'd like to name him Tywin. Cersei shoots the idea down.  She congratulates Lancel on his betrothal and his new lordship. He's not thrilled about either. He met with the high septon. Cersei reminds him of the power of silent prayer.She's approached by Mace Tyrell. He's angling to be named Hand of the King, but says his uncle Garth is on his way to King's Landing to serve as Master of Coin. Cersei has no interest in another Tyrell on the Small Council, so lies and says she's offered the role to Gyles Rosby. Mace is shocked, but his mother steers him away. Later,  she asks Rosby to be Master of Coin and to act as though it was offered yesterday.Back in the Red Keep, Qyburn says he's found a gold coin in the missing gaoler Rugen's chamber. It's from the Reach, which causes Cersei to question whether the Tyrells were involved in the plot to free Tyrion. Cersei plans to call for the headsman for Gregor Clegane. Qyburn asks to move Gregor to the dungeons, to continue to work with him.Her uncle Kevan arrives for dinner. Cersei asks him to be Tommen's Hand of the King. Kevan says he will, if he's also made King Regent. Cersei is to go back to Casterly Rock. She refuses. Kevan says he's taking his brother and going home. Arya and the Hound return to the Inn at the Crossroads, where they meet some of the Mountain's men. Trouble ensues, leaving three dead and the Hound mortally wounded. Arya refuses him mercy and leaves him to die. Finally, she uses her mysterious iron coin to earn her passage out of Westeros. Simon and Mackelly wish Arya a bon voyage. Chapter Review:Arya Stark and Sandor Clegane (AKA the Hound) find themselves back at the Inn at the Crossroads. As soon as they enter, Arya knows there's trouble. She recognizes two of Gregor Clegane's men: Polliver and the Tickler. They're accompanied by a young squire. The men recognize the Hound.The soldiers fill them in on news of the realm: King Joffrey is dead, Sansa Stark killed him, and Sansa's sister has been found. The Hound finds that last bit funny but doesn't share why. When the Tickler wants Sandor to come with them to Harrenhal, chaos breaks out. Sandor has his hands full fighting Polliver and the Tickler. Arya is distracted by the fighting and is surprised by the squire. She turns and stabs him with a dagger. The Hound kills Polliver and Arya stabs the Tickler repeatedly. Sandor makes Arya finish the squire off. She pulls Needle from Polliver's belt and slides it into the boy's heart.The next day the Hound is unable to continue riding to Saltpans due to his injuries. He wants mercy from Arya, and spews horrible things at her to get her to do it. She leaves him to die on the side of the road and continues to Saltpans. At the port town, she sells Craven and tries to buy passage on a ship for Eastwatch. The ship is going to Braavos, and she doesn't have the funds to catch a ride. She pulls out the iron coin Jaqen H'ghar gave her and utters "Valar Morghulis." Tyrion's is betrayed by Shae and demands a trial by combat. Oberyn Martell steps up and defeats the Mountain, but then lets his guard down and the Mountain crushes his head, and Tyrion's hopes. Simon and Mackelly rue the day.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister weighs the offer of Oberyn Martell, but for now allows the trial to continue. Podrik Payne cannot vouch for Tyrion's innocence, which suggests that few will. The last witness is a surprise: Shae. Of course Cersei would have interviewed, and coerced, Sansa's handmaids. But Shae is not only going to lie for Cersei, she's also going to tell the truth. Tyrion and Sansa plotted the murder and Tyrion used her sexually and forced her to refer to him as “her giant of Lannister.” The crowd's laughter is too much for Tyrion and he demands the trial by combat.Cerseis is thrilled to announce that the Mountain Gregor Clegane will fight for her, but the whole room is stunned when Oberyn Martell offers to champion Tyrion's cause. Tywin is furious. Tyrion realizes that this situation has no good outcomes for Tywin. If Oberyn wins, the Tyrells will be annoyed, and Tyrion freed. If the Mountain wins, Tyrion will be dead and the Martells might crown Myrcella, Plunging Westeros into another civil war.Oberyn outwits and defeats the Mountain, with his poisoned spear. But then stands on the vanquished Clegane's chest to extract a deathbed confession. He gets one, Gregor did rape and murder Elia, and murder her children, but it's Oberyn's deathbed. Tyrion stands trial for the murder of the king. The prosecution has no end of witnesses, while Tyrion has none. But at the 11th hour a glimmer of hope appears. Mackelly and Simon weigh the scales of justice.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister languishes for days in a Red Keep tower cell. He's well-treated and fed as befits his station, but the crime of which he's accused holds only one possible punishment. He's getting advice and daily visits from his uncle Kevan, but neither of them is very optimistic of his chances. Cersei is amassing a deluge of witnesses to testify against him. Tyrion pins his hopes on trial by combat, but knowing that the opponent will be Gregor Clegane, Bronn demurs. The trial, before a three-judge panel of Tywin, Mace Tyrell, and Oberyn Martell, goes very badly for Tyrion. The witnesses either exaggerate, downright lie, or in the case of Varys: accurately report Tyrion's various threats and comments on the dead king. Kevan advises confession and the Night's Watch, but Tyrion doesn't trust his father's mercy.On the final night of the trial, Tyrion is visited in his cell by Oberyn. He's not necessarily there to reassure Tyrion, but knowing that he's doomed he's hoping to get the truth about his sister's death. Tyrion confirms some suspicions: while it was the now dead Lorch who dispatched Princess Rhaenys, it was The Mountain who raped and murdered Elia and killed baby Aegon. But Tyrion denies that Tywin ordered the deaths. Oberyn throws Tyrion a lifeline. In the episode, Stannis Baratheon attacks the wildling camp beyond the Wall, as Jon Snow tries to meet with Mance Rayderwith plans on taking him out. Bran Stark meets the Three-Eyed Raven but not before he meets a whole gang of wights and a child of the forrest. Qyburn tries to revive Gregor Clegane; Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne encounters Arya Stark and the Hound in the Vale. And best believe it was some MFn furniture moving. Daenerys Targaryen is forced to chain her dragons up in the dungeons in Meereen after Drogon lil silver capped teeth self showed his ass. Cersei came clean AF with Tywin and said she chooses Jaime. Speaking of Jaime, he sets Tyrion Lannister free before he is to be executed under Tywin's orders. Jaime and Brienne arrive in King's Landing. They've learned that bad news awaits them. Brienne is immediately imprisoned, while Jaime gets into it with his father and his sister. Simon and Mackelly hope for a bit more love and a lot less, respectively.Chapter Review:Jaime Lannister arrives in King's Landing with Brienne, Qyburn, and Roose Bolton's men. It's not changed that much, still stinks. They've learned en-route of the deaths at the weddings (the red and the purple). Jaime is struggling to find the correct emotion. He cares more about how Cersei is feeling and feeling sorry for himself about his hand.Upon arrival, they meet Ser Loras Tyrell, who denounces Brienne as a kingslayer - of Renly that is. Jaime arranges for Brienne to be imprisoned (temporarily, for her own good). Jaime visits the sept, where Joffrey lies in state. He finds his twin mourning over their dead child. She affirms that it was Tyrion who killed Joffrey. They have sex there and then. Jaime wants to be open about their relationship, but Cersei roughly disabuses him of that idea.Jaime visits his father, who reports that Vargo Hoat is getting his comeuppance from Gregor Clegane, who has retaken Harrenhal. Jaime is to leave the Kingsguard, marry Margaery Tyrell (Cersei will marry Oberyn Martell) and take King Tommen to Casterly Rock to be raised away from his mother. Jaime flat out refuses. Tyrion has an awkward dinner with Sansa then gets lost in Littlefinger's financial books. He then has a family gathering filled with news of Robb Stark's death and his family's involvement, as well as Tywin's plan for Gregor Clegane. Throughout it all, King Joffrey is rotten, but this time he attacks Tywin. That does not go over well. Mackelly and Simon ponder the punishments for our dear king.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister dines with his wife Sansa Stark. Awkwardness still reigns between them. Afterward, Sansa goes to the godswood and Tyrion digs into the crown's financial books maintained by Petyr Baelish.He's summoned to the Tower of the Hand. Upon arriving, Tyrion is handed a letter indicating that a Frey married a Tully and did something with wolf pelts. Joffrey blurts out that Robb Stark is dead. Awful Joff wants Robb's head to make Sansa kiss it. Tyrion takes umbrage and calls Joff a monster. When Joff calls him the same, Tyrion says that if he is, Joff should be careful as kings are dying like flies lately. The back and forth ends with Joff telling Tywin that he hid under Casterly Rock during Robert's Rebellion. Joff is sent to bed and Cersei is admonished for poor parenting before also being shown the door.Tywin tells Tyrion the price of the Frey alliance. Some Lannisters will marry some Freys and Roose Bolton is Warden of the North and will marry Arya Stark to his bastard son Ramsay.Tywin says he doesn't plan to give Gregor Clegane to Oberyn Martell. He's going to feed Oberyn the deceased Amory Lorch instead. Tyrion is dubious about the plan. Cat and co arrive at the Twins to a frosty reception. Edmure is delighted by Roslin - she takes after her Rosby mother. Roose Bolton confirms some of the news from the north, shares more bad news, and tells a few lies. Simon and Mackelly get measured for our wedding bonnets.Chapter Review:Catelyn, Robb, and Edmure arrive at the Twins. A welcoming party of Freys is all-but attacked by Grey Wind - who's not really doing his part to smooth things over. He's banished to the dog house with Ser Raynald Westerling.Inside Walder Frey lords it over Robb demanding that the young king apologize to a whole bevvy of Frey girls, any one of which might have been his queen. Robb is contrite and says the right things. Walder is disappointed that Queen Jeyne didn't make the trip, he'd wanted to see what would make a king forget his vow, but he concedes that he remembers being young and in love. They break bread together and Catelyn relaxes - now they have guest right, and no harm will befall them.Edmure is pleased with his betrothed Roslin, who cries “with joy” when she meets her future husband. Roose Bolton is there and lies about who was to blame for the debacle at Duskendale, and reports that his march north was interrupted by Gregor Clegane who waited until his forces were split by the Trident before attacking the rearguard. Bolton was forced to leave men behind to prevent the Mountain from crossing the river. Roose is also dishonest (or misinformed) about his bastard Ramsey's part in the destruction of Winterfell. Tyrion is surprised to welcome the feared warrior Oberyn Martell, rather than his more placid brother Prince Doran, to King's Landing. Oberyn is here for justice. Simon and Mackelly weigh up the chances.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister leads a group of dignitaries to welcome and accompany the 300-strong delegation from Dorne across the Blackwater. All the major Dornish houses are represented, but Prince Doran is uwell and has sent his firebrand brother Oberyn, the Red Viper, in his stead. Tyrion worries for Myrcella and peace.Oberyn has met Tyrion before, whenTyrion was a baby, and Martell a teenager. He was disappointed that Tyrion was not all that monstrous. He relates how Cersei abused Tyrion, and Jamie came to his rescue. All the while their father Tywin was absent in his grief over his lost wife.Martell wants justice for his beloved sister Elia who was murdered by the Mountain in the Sack of King's Landing. He wants Clegane and he wants to know who ordered the murder. Tyrion tries to stall, but that triggers an angry reaction from Oberyn. Tyrion tries to warn of the power imbalance. Arya's miserable life in Harrenhal continues. Weese's petty cruelties take their toll and she gives Jaqen H'ghar her tormentor's name. The Lorathi assassin delivers on his promise. Tywin and his army leave to fight Robb. Simon and Mackelly plan Arya's third wish. Chapter Review: Arya Stark is kept busy running messages for Weese. He has no clue that she can read, so he doesn't bother sealing them. The intel she gathers is utterly pointless. Meanwhile, the castle bustles as Tywin Lannister's army prepares to move out. Apparently he's had enough of Robb winning at every turn. Amory Lorch and his men will stay to garrison Harrenhal. She hears gossip of Robb's exploits, most of which sound fabulous, but hearten her nonetheless. After a gratuitous slap from Weese she bumps into Rorge. He is his usual charming self, threatening to make good on the perverse promises he made to her while he was Yoren's captive. His bravado drops when she mentions Jaqen's name. He's afraid? He meekly directs her to the bathhouse. There she whispers “Weese” in H'ghar's ear. The next day she regrets not being more strategic with her choice, as she watches Twyin's huge army head out to fight her brother. Arya's working as a servant for the Lannisters in Harrenhal. Life is not quite as miserable as it was on the road. Amongst the Lannister troops she notices Jaqen H'ghar. He tells her that he owes the Red god three deaths, to atone for the ones that Arya spared. He just needs names. Arya provides one, and the guys turns up dead two days later. Simon and Mackelly consider the remaining two wishes. Chapter Review: Arya Stark, still disguised as Weasel, is working as a servant in Harrenhal. It's woeful, but at least she has food and shelter so it beats the road. She is also able to stop the gender denial, which had to have been a burden. She's about as visible as a mouse to the Lannister nobles and soldiers, so they speak pretty freely in front of her. From this she learns that Robb is at Riverrun, a lot closer than Winterfell. She hatches a plan to reveal her true identity to one of the Northern hostages. She's knows only one personally, Lord  Medger Cerwyn, but he succumbs to his wounds before she can enact the plan. The various raiding groups stop by: The Brave Companions (aka the Bloody Mummers) of Vargo Hoat are a terrifying bunch of oddballs. Ser Gregor Clegane's men are evil monsters. And Armory Lorch's men have three new recruits: Rorge, Biter, and Jaqen H'ghar.  Jaqen tells Arya that he owes three deaths to the red god, for the three that Arya saved when she threw him an axe in the fire. After hearing a particularly monstrous story from Chiswyck (a member of Clegane's coterie) she offers him up. Two days later he's found dead: fallen from the battlements. Arya is in the clutches of the Lannisters. Needle is taken from her, the secret of her gender is revealed, and she loses all faith in her ability to water dance. They're held in the village while the Tickler tortures and kills villagers for information as to the location of any treasure and intelligence about Beric Dondarrion's increasingly legendary force. No amount of ingratiating or cooperation saves the villagers. Arya's at a low ebb. She feels that, as a water-dancer, she shouldn't have been captured. Another soldier called Polliver has Needle, severing her last tie to her family. Each night she whispers the names of all the people responsible for the deaths that have blighted her life since she left Winterfell. Eventually, the group moves out with the prisoners in tow. All the fighting age men are slain. Gendry only survives because his trade is useful to the Lannisters. On the march, Arya has to pee, and Hot Pie is astonished to discover her gender. Nobody else cares. Harrenhal is a scary place where the towers look like melted candles. Arya is assigned to the Wailing Tower as servant to Weese the understeward. Arya and the surviving recruits bury Yoren, subsist on acorn paste, and spy a village that is not completely abandoned. Reconnaissance gets Arya, Gendry, and Hot Pie captured by Gregor Clegane's men. Weasel escapes and Lommy meets his maker. Simon and Mackelly grope for positives. Chapter Review: Arya Stark, Gendry, Hot Pie, Lommy, and Weasel (the new name given to the crying girl) head back to the holdfast in the daylight. They bury Yoren and find three comrades still alive. Kurz succumbs to a wound, and the other two abscond rather than throw their lot in with Arya's crew. Lommy is injured and must be carried. Weasel has stopped crying. Continuing north around the western edge of the God's Eye, they find a village not entirely abandoned. Arya and Gendry check it out and determine that it is Lannister troops who inhabit it. Gendry is captured, so Arya returns to the others to solicit Hot Pie's help in a daring rescue mission. Lommy wants to abandon Gendry - but Arya convinces Hot Pie to help. Hot Pie makes enough noise as they enter the village to have them both immediately captured. Arya comes face to face with Gregor Clegane, the Mountain that Rides. Hot Pie cracks under questioning and leads the troops back to Lommy. Weasel has scarpered, and the Lannisters are unwilling to carry Lommy, so they run him through. Arya and her fellow recruits spend the night in an abandoned holdfast south of the God's Eye. Tywin's second favorite goon, Amory Lorch, and his gang arrive in the night and attack. Arya does all she can in battle, but eventually flees with Gendry and a couple of others, having paused to throw Jaqen H'ghar a lifeline. Simon and Mackelly worry for her future.Chapter Review:The Night's Watch recruits are stymied by an uncrossable river. They head north to the point of difluence with the Gods Eye lake. They find an unharmed village, utterly abandoned. No boats or anything useful. Gendry suggests that they could build rafts to get across to Harrenhal. Ned gets a turn on the Iron Throne while King Robert is off hunting. His leg hurts and so do the various bits of him getting poked by the chair - curse you Robert, and you Aegon the Conqueror. His comfort is hardly enhanced by news from the Riverlands of murder and pillage by Lannister-men. Simon and Mackelly consider every implication. Chapter Review:Eddard Stark is in charge and sits the Iron Throne. He's not thrilled by either the responsibility, (Robert is off hunting) nor the ergonomics. While Sansa watches on, he is confronted with news of atrocities in the Riverlands. Un-sigiled brigands have sacked three towns, killing and raping - but not stealing. The only clue as to their identity - one of them is as big as a mountain. Against Grand Maester Pycelle's objections, Ned strips Ser Gregor Clegane of his titles, lands, and life and dispatches a sizable contingent under the King's banner to carry out the justice. He gives the lead of this mission to Ser Beric Dondarrion. In so doing, he slights Ser Loras Tyrell and Ser Ilyn Payne (the King's executioner). Lord Varys suggests that this might not have been the best strategic decision. Sansa is having a magical day filled first with jousting followed by feasting with her betrothed Joffrey. It isn't until she is escorted home by the Hound that things go sour, starting with an odd revelation and ending in a death threat. We take you step-by-step through her day at the Hand's Tourney. Chapter Review: Sansa Stark is enchanted by the spectacle of the tourney in honor of her father. She and her friend Jeyne Poole sit with the high lords and ladies to watch the jousting tilts. She sees all of the realm's greatest knights go head-to-head. The only blemish on the magic of the event is when a young knight is killed by Gregor Clegane's lance.
