Brandy has been a leader in the pro-life movement for well over a decade. Her passion and energy for the mission increased while she served as a pregnancy center director in her early years. Later, she was recruited as the Director of Marketing and Research Application at Vitae Foundation. In 2018, former Planned Parenthood director turned pro-life advocate Abby Johnson asked Brandy to join her as the VP of Operations at And Then There Were None to help more abortion workers leave the abortion industry while the movie Unplanned gained popularity. Together, they also launched ProLove Ministries, a pro-life organization that seeks to fill gaps in the movement. And, being aware of this, we can use this principle to not only bring ourselves into balance more quickly, but we can actively practice balance, too.With this in mind, I’d like us to take a look at the main point of Verse 22: To yield is to preserve whole. In other words, non-competition results in maintaining balance. So let’s look at some of the ways we compete from day to day.We compete with others and we compete with ourselves, don’t we?In completing with others, I can find myself always making mental notes - is this person legit? Is this person better than me? Am I better than that person? Maybe it’s not so obvious - perhaps our little competitions are more subtle:At home, is my news more important than my significant other’s news about the day? Do I need to express my feelings and make sure they’re heard first? Do I insist that my significant other pays attention to me?At work: Do I actually listen to what others are proposing or saying, or am I preparing counterarguments? Or, am I thinking of novel ways to relate and show that I’m a good team player by coming up with more elaborate ways to say, uh huh. Yes, I understand. I’m guilty of this.With friends - do we make fun of others? Do we talk about others? Do I bring these subjects up or do they? When they bring others up, do I engage or allow the conversation to pass?If those are some ways I compete with others, let’s consider how I compete with myself. What are my plans for the day? How important is it that I accomplish these things? What happens if I don't accomplish them? How will I feel? Will I be less worthy, less disciplined, or just not a good person if I don’t accomplish my goals? What if I don’t want any goals and am content to sit there? Doing nothing? Do I beat myself up for not wanting to do anything?I think the main takeaway for this verse is for us to become aware of when we contend with either others or ourselves. And we see that every time we contend, we place some sort of resistance in our paths to growth. Lao Tzu urges us to yield, to accept what is, both within ourselves and without, so that we may keep close to center and therefore stay balanced.

A ministra da Saúde da França, Marisol Touraine, anunciou na última quarta-feira que os homossexuais masculinos poderão doar sangue na França a partir de 2016. Os gays estavam proibidos de realizar a prática desde 1983, quando houve uma forte incidência de infecção por HIV nessa população. Porém as severas restrições da nova medida dividem opiniões entre o movimento gay. Enquanto algumas entidades as consideram estigmatizantes e discriminatórias, outras apóiam. Em um primeiro momento, segundo a ministra, os homossexuais apenas poderão doar sangue se não tiverem feito sexo nos últimos doze meses. No caso da doação apenas do plasma, o tempo de abstinência cai para quatro meses. Os heterossexuais apenas têm restrições caso tenham trocado de parceira ou tenham tido relações sem preservativo - quando terão que ficar quatro meses em abstinêcia antes de doar. As associações de defesa dos direitos dos homossexuais SOS Homophobie, Fédération LGBT e Act-up Paris condenaram a estigmatização dos gays. Anthony Roux, vice-presidente do SOS Homophobie, considera a medida hipócrita. "Essa medida vai permitir reinserir no sistema de doação de sangue os homens que tiveram relações sexuais com outros homens ao longo da vida. Mas nós não achamos que isso seja suficiente, pois passamos de uma proibição permanente a uma condição de abstinência sexual de doze meses. E, evidentemente, a maioria dos gays não fica abstinente por 12 meses. Então essa medida é relativamente hipócrita e, no final, não vai permitir aos homossexuais doar seu sangue como anunciado pela ministra da saúde." Para Anthony, as restrições aplicadas aos gays são uma forma de homofobia. ""Devemos ser claros. Doar sangue não é um direito, mas, por outro lado, é um dever cívico. E, quando excluímos toda uma parte da população unicamente se baseando em uma de suas características, como neste caso a orientação sexual, há uma verdadeira estigmatização. É também uma forma de homofobia legitimada pelo poder público. Isso provoca um impacto sobre a sociedade. O que nós pedimos é que as restrições para a doação de sangue não sejam mais baseadas no critério de população de risco, mas de comportamento de risco. E que todas as contra-indicações à doação sejam baseadas nas práticas sexuais das pessoas, e não simplesmente na orientação sexual." Passo importante Já outros grupos, como Inter-LGBT e Aides, são menos críticos. Michel Mangin, responsável pelas questões de saúde do Inter-LGBT, participou das discussões no Ministério da Saúde que levaram à recente autorização. Ele vê a medida como uma passo importante. "Na verdade, chegamos a essa decisão colocando em primeiro lugar a segurança da transfusão de sangue, que é um elemento muito importante para nós. Efetivamente os critérios são muito rígidos para os homens que têm relações sexuais com outros homens. Mas, por enquanto, é uma boa etapa, que deve evoluir, segundo a ministra. Esperamos novos dados científicos, que serão coletados durante o primeiro ano da medida, que deverão permitir a redução desse critério." Michel explica por que acha que as restrições são justificáveis: "Sabemos que toda a população é afetada. Mas a prevalência entre os homossexuais é muito elevada, chegando a 17%. Enquanto que, na população em geral, o índice é de 1%. Para reduzir o critério de doze meses de abstinência, é necessário combater a epidemia de HIV, trabalhar os meios de prevenção, fazer campanha para a realização do teste. Devemos, antes de tudo, combater a epidemia". Regras brasileiras No Brasil, as regras para os gays são parecidas com as da França, como explica Gustavo Torres, do departamento de comunicação da Fundação Pró-Sangue, de São Paulo. "A portaria que define as regras para a doação de sangue, 2.712, de 12 de novembro de 2013, define que homens que tiveram relações sexuais com outros homens devem ficar 12 meses em abstinência para doar". O diretor da Associação Brasileira de Hematologia, Hemoterapia e Terapia Celular, Dante Langhi Jr., explica o porquê da restrição no Brasil.
