If you've ever struggled with feeling stuck in your circumstances or letting past disappointments define your present, this episode is for you. When a pastor or ministry leader falls, it impacts the entire family and community. Walking through a tragedy like this is difficult for everyone. Today's show is from The Glass House, when Illuminator, Lisa Whittle, shared how she has walked this road firsthand as a daughter of a pastor who had a very public fall from their church ministry position. Lisa Whittle shares with us how her father's actions and the reaction from the church community deeply impacted her faith and relationship with the local church. Lisa is the best-selling author of 9 books and several Bible studies, including Jesus Over Everything and The Hard Good. She is a sought-out Bible teacher for her wit and bold, bottom-line approach. She is the founder of online communities: Ministry Strong for ministry leaders and Called Creatives for writers and speakers, and host of the popular Jesus Over Everything podcast. She's a wife, mom, lover of laughter, good food, and The Bible. As we broke down a few points from Lisa's article, How to Lose a Pastor in 10 Years, our prayer is that through this conversation we grow in compassion and grace. Our prayer is that we think twice next time we forward an article or respond to a text. May we be people that surround and support those in need of grace because of the overwhelming amount of grace our Father has given to us.SHOW LINKS:Connect with Angie How to Lose a Pastor in 10 Years 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens  Connect with the Glass House on Instagram HERE

In the dictionary of your life, what would be written beside the word “good?” Maybe health, fulfillment, beauty, wealth, comfort, or control? If God promises to withhold no good thing from those who walk faithfully with him, why doesn't life feel all that great for those of us who are doing it “right?” Everything we've been taught about goodness could use an update from the kingdom of God. EP 103: We are not cold plunging on Jan. 1! Are we? Not me, not yet! Ever noticed that so many “midlife things” feel “hard & good”. For example, marriage is hard… but also good…(for some). Same with parenting, like I have to worry about my kids and their health & schooling, complain about their messes and then hard because I cry over them leaving the nest.  I'm also so proud of their independence and receive so much fulfillment as a mom. And, don't even get me started on having to lift what I call “the dumb, but necessary weights”, in midlife for brain and body health… hard! Ugh, I don't want to lift weights. It's hard. It can be annoying. But, then lifting is good because of the brain and body benefits. The forever long list of dualities of HARD & GOOD!  In this solo episode, I talk about how I don't really do New Year's resolutions. I am kinda just proud of myself and all those “midlifers” who take small steps and actions to “get through” some days and have fab other days. Part of midlife is the “ughs & fabulosities”...the good and hard. We are not all blazing to run through a million new intentions. Sometimes it's just getting through that damn day. At the end of 2023, things felt good and hard for me. Listen to find out why. I bet you can relate.  Just like you, I am re-approaching my own personal fulfillment, relevance and asking “what's next for me.” I made a post about the good and hard aspects of midlife and you guys loved it, so I wanted to speak more about the duality that is life. Take a listen! Let me know what you think!  Looking forward to connecting with you! Here are some ways to connect with me! Summary:   Winging it is the art of doing something with little to no practice or preparation. While winging it can seem fun, spontaneous, and may even make you feel good about yourself in the moment, it inevitably leads to stress, chaos, and pride around what YOU can do and not what the Holy Spirit is doing. On today's show, I sat down with Lisa Whittle and we talked about winging it versus working for it. Lisa and I dive into the sanctification and growth of trusting a process and doing due diligence in preparing for whatever God has called you to.    Lisa is the best-selling author of 9 books and several Bible studies, including Jesus Over Everything and The Hard Good.  She is a sought-after Bible teacher for her wit and bold, bottom-line approach. She is the founder of online communities Ministry Strong for ministry leaders and Called Creatives for writers and speakers, and host of the popular Jesus Over Everything podcast. She's a wife, mom, lover of laughter, good food, and The Bible, and a self-professed feisty work in progress.   When we look at scripture we see the carefully thought-out plans and purposes of God all throughout creation. Through the way He asked Noah to build the ark, Abraham to trust his promise, and David to trust his calling, God shows us that to look more like him is to trust his process and complete the work that is necessary. Hard bad times always arrive. Hard good times are blessings too.   Here we discuss the mindset and challenges that life delivers, both the good and the bad.   Ultimately, You are in control   You are, you control your action; your energy, and what you do. That doesn't mean life won't provide you with interruptions, but even as we discussed above those are our own decision.   You are in control. How you react. How you respond. How you act. You control those states and efforts.   You are not in control of what happens to you, nor what other people do. So stop judging yourself based that which you do not control. It is the mistaken belief that you did control them that has you so stressed.   Focus on what you can impact and tackle all the hard bad. Embrace with gratitude and self awareness the good hard! Something she landed on repeatedly in her studies is our need to redefine the definition of good (and even hard) as Christians.   GoodHard. Life is always both. The good and hard are always commingled in our lives. God made us do the hard things in the midst of the good story He's writing in our lives. Wow. M believes God's trying to tell us something here, friends (well, so many things, actually)… let's have ears to hear. Good Hard. Hard Good.   “Suffering is not the end of the story. Our stories have been so so hard, but they've also been so so good. Dear ones, keep persevering in your own GoodHard story. Tell your GoodHard story to others. Your story will be someone else's survival guide.” Oh, friends… This is a don't miss show today on OOBT.   For today's BONUS + EXTENDED episode show notes, please go to https://mfahring.com/extended-bonus-threads-to-pull/.

REBROADCAST: This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm chatting with author Lisa Whittle about her new book The Hard Good: Showing Up for God to Work in You When You Want to Shut Down. Lisa has published eight books and her wit and bold bottom-line approach have made her a sought-after Bible teacher. She is also the creator of a companion video Bible study for Jesus over Everything. A pastor's daughter and longtime ministry leader in issues relevant to the church, Lisa is the founder of Ministry Strong and the popular Jesus over Everything podcast, which debuted in the top 25 of Christian podcasts. Her love runs deep to see people pursue Jesus for life, grow deep roots of faith, and walk strong in the midst of a world that so often seems to have gone crazy. She and her family live in North Carolina. Key Points from Our Conversation: "The Hard Good" is the stuff that is hard and most spiritually transformative if we allow God to use it and the emotions/feelings that thwart us in the process of change.  "God anoints and appoints, but usability is up to us." Some things are just hard, but not spiritually transformative. The things God wants to use in our lives are often the hard things. But we can better endure the hard when we know there's a purpose behind it. We tend to live ignoring our feelings or feeling controlled by them. People of faith have often struggled in this area because of the false idea that it dishonors their faith. But the creator of the universe made us with emotions and feelings, so He's the one to help us regulate them. We need to have more hard conversations in the church about abuse, widows, refugees, race, etc. When the church won't have tough conversations, the world leads the conversation and the church is left to respond when it should be leading. As a Christian, you are called to make disciples wherever you have influence. Encourage hard conversations in the church and pray for your leaders. If you feel your church isn't aligning with your values, it may be time to leave.  “Instead of silencing tough conversations, let's silence the fear of taking them on.” We all fear getting into a hard conversation because we don't know how it will turn out. If something continues to compel you after praying about it, it's probably time to address it. Praying and being in tune with the Holy Spirit is the best way to ensure a good conversation. Before engaging online remember that anything that offers help apart from the power of God is not helpful. It will end in disaster because it's a human providing a solution. Take time to process and pray before posting. Let's Get Real Practical:  It's time to face hard conversations head-on without fear. Ask God to show you what tough conversations He's inviting you into and use these 3 tips to engage - pray, listen to the other person, and reflect what they said for clarification. You don't have to be stuck in the emotional places you find yourself in! Best-selling author, Lisa Whittle, joins me on the podcast this week to talk about being the boss of your emotions, showing up for your life when you want to shut down, and how to shift from obsessing over “what if?” to accepting “what is.” Lisa helps us see how hard things can take us to good places.    Favorite Quotes: “Life is simultaneously hard and good.” “If we know Jesus, the end of our story is not the hard, but the good.” “Our culture has elevated emotions to being gods. Emotions make great guides but very poor gods.” “We really can boss our emotions.” “Acceptance and preference are two different things. We don't have to prefer something to accept something.” “You don't need a brand new life; you just need Jesus to run the life you have.”   Listen in to learn more: {01:25} Introduction to Lisa and where the idea for her book came from {08:54} The good that can come from the hard {15:05} Showing up when you want to shut down {23:41} Controlling your own emotions {34:39} What Lisa hopes people will take from her book   About Lisa  Jesus is everything. After the past few years, we've all had, facing the prolonged effects of the pandemic and what feels like constant social unrest, our friend Lisa Whittle's new (and 8th!) book could not come at a more welcomed time. Released in September of 2021, The Hard Good: Showing Up For God to Work in You When You Want to Shut Down addresses, with profound wisdom and without platitude, the struggles of living in a painful world where hard things just keep on happening. When Lisa's father died in 2017, she says his passing “was the catalyst to writing [the book], but in so many ways I feel like it's just been an account of the ongoing journey of my life.” Each chapter recounts a hardship she's walked through and her resilient work to discover God's nuggets of good, even in very not good seasons. She never shies away from what real heartbreak looks like, but she also confidently and consistently lets Scripture have the last word in whatever she faces.  Here are a few topics we hit on in our conversation: Redefining good - The lies about the good life are pretty but covertly exhausting. Holding both – Grief and joy can exist in the same space, but you often have to fight for joy! Replacing shutting down with showing up - Take the power back from your emotions. Kingdom purpose vs. Kingdom usability – You will determine your level of useability in the Kingdom by how you respond to the hard things. Waiting - When we have to wait on God, we have to need God. Waiting is one of the best producers of what we need. Through Lisa's courageous yet tender storytelling, we are reminded that some of the greatest goods in this life come on the heels of some awfully hard things. It's not our job to make diamonds from the coal or lemonade from the bitter lemons life hands us; but it is our job to entrust the hard to the good, good God who loves to bring beauty from ashes. This life will be hard, Lisa reminds us, but when we endure the hard with reliant and expectant faith, God can bring good from any hard if we let him.  Our friend Lisa Whittle's new (and 8th!) book could not come at a better time. Released last fall, The Hard Good: Showing Up For God to Work in You When You Want to Shut Down addresses, with profound wisdom and without platitude, the struggles of living in a painful world where hard things just keep on happening. Lisa Whittle joins Amber to discuss Lisa's new book, The Hard Good, showing up when you want to shut down, and being used by God. Questions Lisa and Amber Discuss About Showing Up vs. Shutting Down: (4:40) Your new book, The Hard Good, comes from a place of grief and learning to journey with Jesus in the midst of it instead of shutting down.  Will you set the stage a bit and share how you came to know Jesus and what life was like for you growing up as a pastor's kid? (7:02) The temptation to shut down became very real to you when you saw another man wearing your father's cowboy hat.  In that moment and as the book has developed over time, what did you learn about actively choosing to show up even though there was pain involved? (12:49) Let's talk about our idolatry of feelings. Emotions are not a bad thing, but too often they become the boss of us. How can we use them as a gauge? (21:00) I constantly hear people say, "What is my purpose?" Or "I am praying for God to show me my purpose." This is a hot button for me and you speak directly to it.  As a Christian, what is our purpose? (21:00) In light of that purpose, how can we maximize our usability? (27:15) I am going to share some chapter titles from The Hard Good and I want you to share a thought or piece of advice that comes to mind Accepting Something You Wish Were Something Different Cheering For Someone When They Get What You Want Showing Up When You Want to Shut Down Opening Up Your Heart Again When It's Been Hurt Welcoming Change (31:16) As we close out, you have written a Bible Study that goes along with The Hard Good.  What can one expect from the study? This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm chatting with author Lisa Whittle about her new book The Hard Good: Showing Up for God to Work in You When You Want to Shut Down. There are many times in life we look around at our circumstances and think 'what if' this happened differently or 'what if' I made this choice and not that. The endlessness of questions and sitting in the 'what if's' can keep us from getting to a place of peace and joy to discover the beauty of the 'what now'. Lisa Whittle joins Desiree on this episode to chat about working through the hard times and even hard thoughts we process daily in her new book, The Hard Good. From grief to jealousy and everything in-between, Lisa shares ways to get through each scenario to a greater good. A few other topics we discuss in this episode include managed feelings vs. bossy emotions, change and transition and being able to process each in a healthy way. Life is full of hard things, we all know that. But how we choose to see those hard things – our perspective on all that life gives us -- can make a radical difference in how we come through our trials.  When bestselling author and Bible teacher Lisa Whittle lost her beloved father in 2017, she found herself on a journey to learn the hard good.  Years later Lisa combines the lessons she learned with counsel from Scripture to create a roadmap that will help readers navigate their own hard good. In this episode Lisa shares about her relationship with her dad, and then we touch on a number of the “hard good” circumstances that we all face: From accepting things you wish were different, to seeing someone else get what you want, to showing up when you want to shut down. I think Lisa's honesty and Biblical counsel will help you navigate a current hard season, or store up wisdom for those ahead. Lisa Whittle's NEW book, The Hard Good, provides a solid roadmap for anyone who has experienced hard times or difficult circumstances in their life. Human nature causes some people to want to resist the hard, turn away and try to substitute things in place of experiencing those certain feelings of disappointment, frustration, longing, emptiness, inadequacy, jealousy (the list is long!) – but Lisa encourages people to take that hard journey. This book reframes the work we need to do in the inevitable “hard” times of our lives – giving us tangible tips to help us recognize triggers of shutdown and tricks to aid in quickly deescalating feelings of making us realize the importance to going through it to come out to the "good" we are meant to live.

Hard things are a part of life. Yet they don't have to have the final word. They can become the keys to our greatest usability in the kingdom of God—that is, if we let God make good of them, rather than running away and refusing the growth we truly crave. Lisa Whittle is on the show today discussing her new book The Hard Good. In today's episode, Lisa guides us on a powerful path to progress as we learn to: accept things we wish were different, apologize and forgive first, cheer for someone who gets what we want, open our hearts again when we've been hurt, find joy in the waiting, and show up when we want to shut down. Written for those who desperately want to move forward, The Hard Good gives voice to the hard places we all have lived and Lisa's clear directions as to where to go next. We pray through this episode you realize your hard place is never too hard for God. Allow it to change you, help you, and ready you for the greatest comeback you have ever known. This week's love offering is to remember that “You can't fix it so don't try. We try to offer our story as help, but sometimes we need to just listen. Don't be afraid to let silence sit. Sit in the grief.” “If you don't love Jesus you can't love people. If it doesn't come from an overflow of our hearts eventually it will become service that in some way serves us.” Connect with Lisa: Lisa Whittle | Author, Speaker & Teacher | Put Your Warrior Boots On (Book)

Are you struggling? I have been hearing from so many people who are tired, weary and are just done. And these same people just want to shut down. So today we are honored to have Lisa Whittle in the studio to talk about her new book, The Hard Good: Showing Up for God to Work in You When You Want to Shut Down. Lisa Whittle is here to share her wisdom, experiences, and on what God has taught her. Lisa explains how she views the difference between hard and good and why she wants to redefine these terms. It doesn't end with just the hard, it ends with the good. Lisa speaks about so many of her experiences of hard times during this conversation. She talks about her father and how she shares his same habits and responses, which guided her in writing her new book. How faith is a key part of Lisa's life, and she talks about how to work through the hard things but also how to walk through those hard times with God by her side. How she needs more than just believing in herself and in this world, and to hold on to that belief that there is more. We continue with our conversation, acknowledging that we all struggle and not everyone's journey is the same. Even if some struggles may be universal, each person handles it differently. How to see and recognize the signs that are different for everyone and to pay attention. We speak to those out there who are struggling and give guidance, and steps to working through their difficult time, because we come from a place of understanding. That working through the hard is not perfect and it doesn't mean that you cant see the good in the hard. But most importantly that you can come out the other side.   In This Episode [00:39] - Welcome Lisa Whittle to The Crystal Paine Show [01:15] - So many people who don't want to show up. [01:45] - I have Lisa introduce herself for our audience. [02:43] - Tell us where this book came from. [04:15] - I love, kind of, this conflict or tension just in the title of your book.  [05:15] - We don't have to define hard. [08:06] - When you know what you believe and when your firm in your faith, I don't think there should be anything, any conversation we're afraid of [09:27] - How do you know that you're shutting down? [12:20] -  How do we reverse course and not just get stuck in that rut of shutting down? [14:00] - “I am here.” [14:52] -  A lot of us are alive but we are not living. [16:53] - When we are really vulnerable with a friend, our relationship deepens because we've shared our hearts, and I think it is the same in our relationship with the Lord. [18:15] - I loved what you had to say about cheering for someone, when they get what you want. [18:30] - I read a passage from The Hard Good [20:49] - Women are amazing, we, we have the ability to be so for each other. [23:36] - She is not the opponent, jealousy is. [25:48] - I would just love for you to speak to that woman who is in the hard right now, and there is, and it doesn't feel like there's any good. What would you say to her?
