When you use the term “data scientist” you normally think of an inarticulate introvert who is dazzled by numbers and has week social skills.  Well, this interview with Aaron Pujanandez from Excella may change the preconception.  We start off with referencing an article from the Harvard Business Journal from 2012.  This was probably a conceit eleven years ago, but in the last decade we have seen cheap storage, available compute, and ubiquitous fast Internet.  Perhaps the title is getting closer to the truth. We begin the interview with having Aaron differentiate “data analyst” from “data scientist.”  Many common themes including Python and being part of a team.  From Aaron's view, a data analyst may be charged with providing a visual depiction of data elements where a data scientist may delve into mor advanced topics like subtleties of Extract, Transform, Load, Machine Language, and code review.  One of the challenges faced by federal information professionals is the volume of data to ingest.  During the interview, Aaron talked about many of the aspects of selecting data and making sure it is safe in transit. Aaron provides the listener with his thoughts on selecting the right data, data quality, handling large volumes of data, data access and, finally, the all-important concept of being able to communicate findings to non-technical stakeholders. There are no silver bullets here – just an opportunity to approach large data sets and artificial intelligence from a perspective that will give actionable results. Episode 309: Sondra Shannon talks about making heroes out of operators, guest-driven transactions, and building an inspirational culture

Sondra Shannon is the CEO of Gatemaster Technology, one of the leading ticketing solutions for the attractions industry.  Sondra's career in the industry began with Q-Zar Laser Tag as General Manager, where she was a self-proclaimed “super-user” of Gatemaster in the late 1990s.  When that facility was sold, Gatemaster's founder recruited Sondra to help build the next iteration of the product, which enabled the company to expand into water parks, zoos, museums, and theme parks.  Now, as CEO of the company, Gatemaster has evolved as the trends in technology continue to shift, and Sondra remains an avid enthusiast of the industry.  In this interview, Sondra talks about making heroes out of operators, guest-driven transactions, and building an inspirational culture.   Making heroes out of operators “Their focus should be on the guest experience, and not trying to figure out how to make something work in their system.”   When an attraction implements Gatemaster, the software often replaces anywhere from three to six systems.  This makes it a much more efficient operation, and Sondra stresses that her goal is to not only make things easier for guests, but also for the operator.  If staff have a difficult time navigating their own system, it reflects poorly on the business, and the guest experience suffers.   Gatemaster was founded by people within the attractions industry who know and understand the experience.  Even though Gatemaster is a software company, Sondra ensures that she is regularly visiting attractions with her family and encourages her team to do so as well.  This allows them to see the experience through the lens of the guest, which inspires innovation in technological development that further helps the operator deliver a superior experience and be the hero for their guests.   Guest-driven transactions   "We're trying to empower hospitality."   Everything that Gatemaster has created has led to what Sondra refers to as the guest-driven transaction.  A few years ago, Harvard Business Journal conducted a study with more than 200 companies and determined that self-service technology empowers customers.  The study showed that wait times were reduced by 30-50%, and customer satisfaction increased by 50%.   Guest-driven transactions allow the guest to take more control over their own experience and feel more empowered.  The results also show that guests are investing more in their own experience and thus spending more.  By intuitively offering upsells and add-ons, the guest also feels like the business knows them a little bit better by crafting a personally-curated experience.   Building an inspirational culture   “I want to encourage more people to enter this space.”   Sondra meets with her team every Friday, and at the end of the meeting, everyone is asked what attraction(s) they are visiting over the weekend.  By encouraging every member of the team to visit attractions and understand the guest experience, it enables them to bring back ideas for how they can help the operator, and others like them, improve the guest experience, resulting in fewer angry guests and, therefore, fewer burnt-out team members.   When describing Gatemaster's culture, Sondra says that it's easy to get people to buy into the idea that they can help people create memories.  Gatemaster's core values align with what needs to go into building a product that enables attraction operators to create memories for their guests that last a lifetime. The theory of "disruptive innovation" was introduced in the well-thumbed pages of the Harvard Business Journal in 1995 by Joseph Bower and the late Clayton Christensen. In it, they outlined the case for classic disruption - a small enterprise targeting an overlooked proportion of the population with a new but modest offering, and gradually growing to challenge industry incumbents.  In this theory, disruption only occurs in two cases: in low-end, less profitable markets, or in completely new markets altogether. However, over the past 27 years, "disruption" has shape-shifted to become a tell-all term for a business with a heck of a lot of growth potential, usually followed in tow by a slew of imitator start-ups, and of course, industry incumbents quickly pivoting their business models to catch up.  And what could be more disruptive than decarbonisation?  So in this episode, Livewire's Ally Selby was joined by Nanuk Asset Management's Peter Wilmshurst and Pella Funds Management's Steven Glass for their thoughts on three companies that dare to disrupt incumbent industries as the world shifts to net zero.  Plus, they also each name two companies that could become global leaders in one of the world's most important megatrends over the coming three decades.  Note: This episode of Buy Hold Sell was shot on Wednesday 27th April 2022. Live in Their World is helping companies and organizations use VR technology to tackle workplace cultural issues and help employees develop and practice new skills for a respectful engagement at work. Today, VR is an immersive technology that many HR executives are starting to embrace to train employees on workplace issues from racism to sexism to hidden systemic biases. Especially in the wake of new Black Lives Matter protests, Live in Their World (LITW) hopes to use Virtual reality to help people better understand others by putting them in their colleagues' shoes, allowing organizations to use the technology to help create a more diverse and more inclusive work environment. By immersing employees in realistic digital environments, virtual reality can lead to mind-bending experiences, such as making users feel as if they have swapped bodies with someone else, letting them see first hand what it's like to be discriminated against or treated in an uncivil way. According to Harvard Business Journal, Incivility costs an estimated $14,000 per employee per year through sharp declines in employee performance and effort and lost time. Managers spend a total of seven weeks each year on average of addressing employee conflicts and their effects, not counting increased turnover or legal costs. Even more specifically, nearly a third of adults in the US, UK, France, and Germany have experienced or witnessed racism in the workplace, according to research from Glassdoor, making it even harder to retain staff from ethnic minorities. Robin Rosenberg, Ph.D., CEO and Founder of Live in Their World and shares with me how the company uses virtual reality to address issues of bias and incivility in the workplace and upskill employees for respectful engagement. She is a clinical psychologist, and prior to starting her company, she had both psychotherapy and coaching practices, wrote college textbooks, and taught psychology classes at Lesley University and Harvard University. Robin combined her interest in immersive technologies with her coaching and clinical experiences to foster in employees a deeper understanding of how and why other people may feel slighted or marginalized and how to approach such interactions differently. She's also been interested in virtual reality (VR) for years and was the lead author of a study to investigate using "VR for good." She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Francisco.

Elite Agents Real Estate Podcast with Debbie De Grote

Hello and welcome to Debbie's Daily Tips, and I wanted to talk to you today about the fear of failure. I wonder if the fear of failure is stopping you from setting bigger goals or tackling new things. I was on an airplane and I was reading an article in the Harvard Business Review and they had an article on this topic, a terrific article. Some of the points really made me connect it back over to what may limit performance in the real estate industry. If you think about it, fear is really worrying about doing something wrong. In our case, in a sales position, maybe it's the fear of being rejected or the fear of failing and having a major setback in a situation. I look at this and, in the business of being an entrepreneur where every day we're faced with challenges, I always tell my team, we're going to innovate. We're going to try new things. We're going to embrace new opportunities. We must be agile, we must be flexible, and we also need to understand that sometimes we're going to make mistakes. Another tip on failure, from this Harvard Business Journal article, is to adopt a new mindset. After you make a mistake, if you can just look at that and say, alright, what did I learn from this? How can what I learned actually be worth the lesson learned? In other words, maybe you’ll use it in the future to make more money, to be more successful, to streamline your processes, or in some cases, maybe have a better quality of life, a better work environment. Embrace the fact that every day you need to do something that might make you just a little bit uncomfortable. Every month you need to examine the new opportunity, an out of the box idea, and then maybe play the game that I do, which is looking at the worst-case scenario. In other words, if X, Y and Z happens, or I try this and I fail, what is the worst-case scenario? And truly, usually the worst case is not that bad, especially when you think about it with something as simple as prospecting. If I make this call, what is the worst-case scenario? What if they hang up on me? Well, guess what guys? You probably don't know them or don't know them well or they're not really all that important in your life, so you can simply hang up and go on and call somebody else. There’s a quote on a little magnet that we have on our microwave here at the office, “Do one thing every day that scares you,” Eleanor Roosevelt. Get used to stretching your comfort zone a bit. When you were a were kids, did you ever have silly putty? You may remember that when you stretched it, it wouldn’t go back to its original shape. It probably rebounded a bit, but it was still bigger than how it started. If you think about your tolerance for trying new things, your tolerance for getting out of your comfort zone, your tolerance for overcoming rejection, you can stretch that tolerance. The more you do it, the more you attempt it, the more you stretch it, the greater your tolerance becomes, so that it is easier for you to try new things. So think about it, what's the worst thing that can happen? Probably nothing too bad, right? Zig Ziglar often used to say when he was alive, 80% of what you worry about will probably never happen. And when it comes to the 20% that does happen, you can't do anything about it. I'm going to ask you this last question as we wrap up the Daily Tip for today. What is one thing that you are avoiding that you know, if you stopped avoiding it, embraced it, and did it, it might be a game changer? Think about it. Maybe it's time. Give it a try. Be Brave. Alright guys. Have a great day and I look forward to talking to you on the next Debbie's Daily Tip.   If you are a real estate agent or broker that is looking to for more insight and direction on how to get more listings, sell more homes to your investors, and work with more buyers, then this podcast is just for you!

Today’s First Big Idea comes from the Harvard Business Journal  — Five leadership voices every executive must cultivate. Communication is an important leadership skill that deserves more of our attention. Our second big idea focuses on the age-old debate:  Which executive is more likely to perform better and thus move ahead — the person who puts in the longer hours, or the executive who sticks to a set work schedule with no nights or no weekends?  The answer may surprise you.

考证:获得MBA是否值得

Is getting an MBA worth it?Derrick Williams, Have an MBA. I use it sometimes!Written 22 Dec 2015I have an MBA, and while I'm happy to have one, I think I got it for the wrong reasons. If I had to do it again, I would have gotten something in the hard sciences like cryptography or mathematics (just my personal choice). In the late 1990's and early 2000's, MBA's were something of a fad, simply everyone was getting one. Coupled at the time was the fact I was working for IBM, and could not conceive the possibility of working anywhere else. I loved working there and was really proud of being an IBMer. I was going to work there forever! Then the layoffs and offshoring of IBM jobs started happening, and in one meeting my then PDM (personnel development manager) made an offhand remark that everyone except the MBA's were getting laid off. While that alone didn't set me off, it was the spark to apply for business school that very day. I got into a reputable one (although not Harvard or Kellogg, just a established accredited school with good rankings), did fairly well, and got laid off from IBM anyway. My last few months at IBM was me scrambling away from technology and into sales, which I didn't like much after all, but if it kept me at IBM, maybe I could learn to like it. A moot point, I was terminated with some 10,000 other people at the same time. The MBA did help me find new work though, and helped me with my career and the ability to evaluate new projects and work better with people, and made me comfortable with leadership. I don't necessarily like being in management, but given the choice between me and someone else with little experience, I can step up.So to answer your question, since it seems you want a yes or no answer, I would say no, the MBA is not worth getting. To qualify this 'no':1) The MBA program is something you can learn on your own. Subscribe to the Harvard Business Journal, read the classic MBA textbooks, and there just might be a free MBA type course you can take online. This assumes you are interested in knowledge and not just the credentials.2) The MBA program is a lot about networking. If you get to a top ranking program like Kellogg or Harvard, you will make excellent connections, and that alone can be worth the money. Going to a good ranking but otherwise unremarkable school like I did got me some new friends, but not make connections that would be invaluable. I have connections with very nice people working as middle managers for Fortune 500 and small companies, not future presidents of the United States.3) If credentials are important, I would strongly recommend you get a 'hard' credential in science or mathematics, the kind of skill that products are built on. You can still learn the soft MBA skills on your own on top of that.So that's my take on it. Your mileage may vary!Derrick
