Bora Laskin, Canada's first Jewish Supreme Court justice, gets his own Heritage Minute

Just in time for Jewish Heritage Month, the team behind the iconic Heritage Minutes—60-second short films about notable Canadians throughout history—is spotlighting Bora Laskin, the first Jewish justice appointed to the country's Supreme Court. Laskin became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court soon after. He served from 1970 until his untimely death from pneumonia in 1984 at the age of 71. The son of Jewish immigrants to Fort William (now Thunder Bay) in Northern Ontario, Laskin was a gold-medal law student in Toronto during the 1930s. With widespread antisemitism in the profession in those days, it was challenging for Laskin to find an articling position, which he ultimately did—with a Jewish firm. Laskin then went on to complete multiple degrees, including from Harvard. After nearly two decades teaching law at the newly founded U of T law school–where the library now bears his name-Laskin was appointed to the provincial court in Ontario, where he developed a reputation as a champion of the labour movement. After former prime minister Pierre Trudeau appointed Laskin to the Supreme Court, Laskin's judgments led to patriating the Canadian Constitution, enshrining the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and equalizing women's marital property rights. This new minute-long short film stars veteran Canadian Jewish actor Victor Garber, who was reportedly eager to take on the role due to his own heritage. It will be broadcast on more than 70 television stations and also online beginning May 7. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we're joined by Sam Rosenthal, one of the creative team members behind the project, who explains the drive and meaning behind the project. Shelley Laskin, his niece and a Toronto school board trustee, also joins. Related links Watch the Bora Laskin new Heritage Minute by Historica Canada on YouTube beginning May 8. If you live in Canada, you're probably familiar with Heritage Minutes. Produced by Historica Canada, these sixty-second short films educate viewers on fascinating or little-known stories from Canada's history. Dozens of Heritage Minutes have been released since 1991, and many of them are iconic, like “Doctor Penfield, I can smell burnt toast!” and “You never know, it might be worth something someday” and especially “Both of you know I canna read a word.” The latest short film to join the pantheon of iconic Heritage Minutes tells the story of Mary Riter Hamilton, a brave Canadian painter who ventured into No Man's Land in the aftermath of World War One. She bore witness to the destruction and devastation, painted what she saw, and suffered mentally and physically as a result. The haunting Heritage Minute – which stars Megan Follows (AKA Anne Shirley) as Mary – was written and directed by a Vancouver-based dynamic duo, Hayley Gray and Elad Tzadok, whose previous Heritage Minute told the story of Paldi, one of the most successful multicultural communities in our history. In this fascinating episode, get to know this trailblazing but little-known artist from the first half of the 20th century, as well as the dynamic duo who stepped up to tell her story. Plus, the guys make their quick picks for the playoffs, and go in-depth on which team in the lottery mix actually deserves to land Connor Bedard, which clubs would be tolerable to see him end up with, and who would be the most annoying to see come out on top at this year's draft. The guys give immediate reaction to the breaking news that this is John Garrett's final season calling Canucks games on Sportsnet Pacific, the end of a legendary 20 year run on what is hands down the best regional broadcast in the entire NHL. Then it's time to sound off on another late season winning streak that is seeing the club destroy their own draft odds for no real reason instead of doing the obvious thing and leaning into the skid before righting the ship in the off-season. And finally, while Pride Nights continue to be a big black eye for the league, Luke Prokop and the Seattle Thunderbirds offer hope for a better future. So don't laugh too much when Jackson says "We'll see what becomes of that" with regards to the Islanders' first round pick. With Vyas finally back from galavanting across Europe, the guys catch up on everything that went down while he was away -- which in the case of the Canucks happens to be A LOT of weird and wild stuff -- so much in fact that you may have already forgotten some of it as your brain clears space to make room for new stuff. It's been a defrag your brain type of season. Anyway, Jackson is back from his honeymoon and the guys will have a reaction pod to the Trade Deadline coming your way before you know it. The guys reconvene for the first time in a few weeks to discuss a very Canucks-centric Hall of Fame induction ceremony as the Sedin twins and Roberto Luongo headline the 2022 class. That, combined with Kevin Bieksa's recent one-day stint around the team before retiring, put the focus on the level of professionalism and dedication that used to be embodied by that orca sweater, and what this owner has really created while wasting millions in cap space on so-called culture carriers. This week on the podcast, Canadian Musician Editor-in-Chief Mike Raine welcomes Thompson Egbo-Egbo, a celebrated and internationally acclaimed pianist and composer from Toronto. His new album, What Remains, is out this Friday, October 28, via MNRK Music. Born in Nigeria, moving to Canada at age four, and learning piano at age six, there was concern that the renowned jazz pianist wasn't adjusting well in school. His mom decided to enroll him in music lessons. At Dixon Hall, a community centre down the street from where Thompson grew up in Toronto's Regent Park neighbourhood, he was able to take piano lessons at two dollars a session. Growing up in subsidized government development area of Toronto, Thompson was inspired by Dixon Hall's mission to build a musical school gave neighborhood kids access of affordable music lessons. Thompson went on to earn degrees in music from Humber College, and music production at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and has released numerous works and collaborating with some of the world's most renowned artists. In 2021, Thompson portrayed a young Oscar Peterson in an episode of Historica Canada's Heritage Minute, honouring the artist's life and career. While he was set to cross the pond for a recording opportunity at Abbey Road Studios in London, UK, Thompson was still able to proceed in Toronto to write and record Oddly Familiar – an album released and archived with Audio Network's sync library.

Kandyse McClure's filmography is populated by a staggering range of characters. On the critically acclaimed and beloved Battlestar Galactica, Kandyse portrayed Anastasia “Dee” Dualla, a passionate woman who fought, loved, dreamt, and, ultimately, succumbed to despair. As Nicte Batan in the third and final season of Motherland: Fort Salem, she wrestled with her character's past as a terrorist while forging unexpected alliances. As Sam in Neill Blomkamp's wildly entertaining horror film Demonic, she embodied the stuff of nightmares; and as Golden Eyes in the genre-defying feature film Sew the Winter to My Skin – a role for which she was nominated for an African Movie Academy Award – she somehow managed to speak volumes about the impact of oppression on humanity without actually speaking many words at all. Other recent work includes GenZeroes (the cutting-edge project championed by friend of the pod Aleks Paunovic), Charmed, Limetown, the bonkers Netflix series Ghost Wars, and a standout role as Viola Desmond, the entrepreneur who challenged segregation in Nova Scotia in the 1940s, in an iconic Heritage Minute. The projects and roles are wildly different, but the thread that unites them is the humanity, authenticity, and conviction that Kandyse brings to each one. In this riveting episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, Kandyse reflects on her journey from South Africa at 11 years old, grieving Dee, moving into her “villain era,” and dancing in her trailer.Content warning: This episode contains frank talk about suicide. The Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow was a delta-winged interceptor aircraft designed and built by Avro Canada. The CF-105 held the promise of Mach 2 speeds at altitudes exceeding 50,000 feet and was intended to serve as the Royal Canadian Air Force's primary interceptor into the 1960s and beyond. But a host of political and financial issues grounded this extraordinary plane before it had a chance to take to the skies.
