Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Providence Journal College Basketball Podcast. This is Bill Koch, sports writer for The Journal. I'm joined by Morey Hershgordon, sports director at WPRI and Fox Providence, and Nick Coit, sports director at ABC6 and weekend WEEI-Providence co-host of Cordischi and Coit. Providence's men (1:25) are staggering into the Big East Tournament after a loss to Seton Hall and a 4-5 mark in their last nine. The Friars face Connecticut in a Thursday quarterfinal at Madison Square Garden Brown's men (20:05) missed out on Ivy Madness via tiebreaker after a home loss to Yale. Cornell claimed the fourth spot in the league while the Bears fell a victory shy of a first appearance. Bryant's men (31:10) suffered an America East quarterfinal loss at New Hampshire to close their season. The Bulldogs were hoping for a fresh start after dropping four of their last five. Mary Burke (41:40) will step away from the Bryant women after 32 years. She crafted a Hall of Fame career as a student-athlete at Toll Gate and Providence and then as a coach with the Bulldogs. The University of Rhode Island women (47:15) were upset by Saint Louis in the Atlantic 10 semifinals. The Billikens went on to finish their Cinderella mission by downing Massachusetts in the title game. The Rams and Minutewomen are likely bound for the WNIT. Thanks as always for listening.

In her first year as  St. Joe's field hockey coach, Hannah Prince led the Hawks to a 16-4 record advancing to the Round of 8 in the NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual NCAA Champion North Carolina Tar Heels. In her collegiate career, Prince was a four-year starter at UMass from 2010-13, helping the Minutewomen to three Atlantic 10 titles and three NCAA appearances. Prince also competed on the international level, serving as a captain on the USA Field Hockey Indoor National Team from 2015 until her retirement in June 2021. In this episode, Prince talks about her first season at St. Joe's and dives into what she looks for in recruiting high school talent. She also discusses a lot of the concerns for today's parents including pay-for-play, the importance of tournaments and showcases, access to water-based turf and what events should some of the top high school players target for participation. Erin M. Kempker is an associate professor of history at Mississippi University for Women and the author of Big Sister: Feminism, Conservatism and Conspiracy in the Heartland (University of Illinois, 2018). The author examines how 1970s right-wing women activists in the state of Indiana combined earlier political conspiracy theories, Cold War anti-communism and anti-ERA sentiment to cast feminism as threat to American democracy, free enterprise, and the family. Conservative women's groups in the mid-West, such as Minute Women and Pro America, rallied against the Equal Right Amendment at a critical moment for feminism. The strategy of the ERA Coordinating Committee, (HERA) a coalition of twelve liberal organizations, was of low-key bi-partisan lobbying of legislators that marginalizing radical feminists. The soft-sale approach of Hoosier feminists threatened to kill the ERA as it faced militant right-wing opposition. Kempker examines the motivations and organizational strategies of right-wing women and the problems feminist encountered in promoting ERA as a matter of simple justice and failing to directly counter the conservative critiques. Big Sister is a study of both conservative strategies that led to the rightward move of the Republican Party in the 1980s and the failings of feminists in delaying the ultimate passage of ERA in Indiana offering lessons for activist today. Lilian Calles Barger, www.lilianbarger.com, is a cultural, intellectual and gender historian. Her recent book is entitled The World Come of Age: An Intellectual History of Liberation Theology (Oxford University Press, 2018). Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
