A conversation between four artists who juggle big families, lots of jobs, and sneak in more time than ever to make things. We discuss the joys and struggles of having it all- from artist tips when your life is full of taking care of the kids to humble entrepreneurial endeavors. Corey and Melissa Hardin, owners of The Art Studio in Highland Lakes, have four children, several jobs, two BFAs, and a passion for making and teaching art. Corey earned his BFA from Pratt and is a career-long Union Carpenter. Melissa earned her BFA from Ramapo College and is a dedicated art educator in her own art school, and marketing coordinator for Gym Guys. My wife Kristin Dalelio (aka Kitchen) and I have five kids, two BFAs, and a passion for making and teaching art as well. Kitch got her dual major degrees in Art and Religion from Felician University and is now a Cottage Food licensed baker. Dennis Dalelio earned his BFA from Mason Gross at Rutgers University, his MFA from William Paterson University, and has been a career-long art teacher (and host of this show.) Through years of alarm clocks or babies waking them up before dawn, ships passing each other in the night, learning how to be parents full of wisdom, and dedicated workers who earn their paychecks, all four have maintained a practice of creating and/or teaching art that makes them feel alive and to be who they each were created to be. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thestolenhourspodcast/message

Weekly CDC COVID risk levels are released: Blanco County is upgraded to High risk, joining Milam, Fayette, Caldwell and Lampasas Counties, while the rest of the area remains at Medium risk, including Travis and Williamson. COVID-related hospitalizations have continued to slowly rise to 188, up from 170 one week ago. Meanwhile, monkeypox cases have continued to climb, and Austin Public Health confirms that West Nile virus has been detected in Travis County mosquitoes. Austin has officially seen its hottest July record, and we're now in drought conditions that are the worst in over a decade. Former Austin auto dealership magnate Erik Charles Maund, in jail in Nashville awaiting trial for arranging the murders of a mistress and her estranged boyfriend, is accused of attempting to arrange the murder of one of his accomplices - from behind bars. As part of yesterday's marathon session, the Austin City Council has approved a $350 million bond for affordable housing efforts on the November ballot. The Travis County Commissioners Court has approved a resolution imploring LCRA to take more impactful measures towards conservation of water in the Highland Lakes system. Austin's police and transportation departments are working on strategies to reduce the rising number of severe car accidents in the city. Speaking of APD, the Austin Chronicle has published an article on the department's use of long range acoustic devices or LRAD's as a crowd control measure - if improperly used, they can cause permanent hearing loss and brain injuries, and in theory interfere with heart function. The race for Austin Mayor just got a little testier, as candidate Celia Israel has characterized parts of her opponent and former Mayor Kirk Watson's housing plan as "racist". The two-screen Doc's drive-in movie theater near Buda is for sale - the land and the business are included for just under $4 million.

Murder suspect Kaitlin Armstrong is back in Austin. State Sen. Roland Gutierrez and Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin say that families of the Uvalde shooting victims are suffering delays in getting compensation benefits from the state, and that the compensation payments have been insufficient. Austin gas prices, while still flirting with record highs, have taken a dive of over 15 cents per gallon over the last week. Meanwhile, Austin's traffic levels have built back to pre-pandemic levels of gridlock. Citing extreme drought conditions, LCRA has decided to deny Highland Lakes water to agricultural customers in the lower Colorado River basin. A scandal is developing over a golden retriever that was reported missing from the Lucki Dog boarding facility in Spicewood, but later found buried on the facility's property. Austin Public Health has requested testing supplies and vaccines from the federal government to help tackle the potential spread of monkeypox in Central Texas. The current labor agreement between the City and the Austin Police Association will expire in three months - representatives of both are continuing to negotiate a new contract. Longtime KXAN news anchor Robert Hadlock, the longest-serving current anchor in Austin, is set to retire in mid-July. The original Z'Tejas location on West 6th is set to close by the end of the year. Austin has been ranked among the least-affordable cities in the country for minimum wage earners.

Rosita Gilsenan is a prolific painter who is originally from Moynalty, Kells, Meath, Ireland. Her landscape themed paintings are made with a method called "deconstruction" where paint is applied and wiped off in order to create atmosphere. She can often be found with a group of artists painting watercolors in plein air or throwing paint onto the canvas in her studios found in Highland Lakes, NJ, Naples, Florida or back in Ireland depending on the season of life. Her well known batik work began when she studied art in Strawberry Hill in London. This work brought her to New York after a NY Times article introduced her and her batiks to America. Shortly thereafter, she moved to New York City, where she made her early living selling her artwork. Once established as a US citizen, she eventually began Gilsenan Design Inc., an interior design company based in Warwick, NY that she built and established for 30 years. She recently transferred the reigns of the business to her daughter as she now spends her time steeped in communities in and around making art. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thestolenhourspodcast/message

Hill Country Motorheads, LLC is a vintage motorcycle museum located in Burnet, Texas – the “Bluebonnet Capital of Texas” in the beautiful Texas Hill Country and Highland Lakes area, just north of Austin. Hill Country Motorheads joins just a handful of motorcycle museums operating in Texas and displays over 7000 square feet of vintage Street Bikes, Motocrossers, Trials, Flat Trackers, Drag Racers, Choppers, other genres of motorcycles and memorabilia mostly from the 1960’s – 1980’s. For the Harley diehards, we do have some cool old HD’s to enjoy! Hill Country Motorheads is not your typical antique motorcycle museum. With over 200 motorcycles in the collection, the museum regularly showcases more than 70 bikes of many brands from around the world. Some pre-60’s bikes are on display and we welcome consignments if they are suitable to the museum theme. While you’re here, relax in the Man Cave, play some pool, watch the big screen TV and enjoy all the memorabilia on the walls and vintage bikes scattered throughout the facility. There is plenty of paved parking for all sizes of vehicles, trailers and bikes. The museum is pet friendly but all pets must be on leash while on the museum property. Hill Country Motorheads is also a great “destination ride and drive” and is located in close proximity to Luckenbach, Llano, Austin, Fredericksburg, San Antonio and the famous and challenging “Twisted Sisters” highways. Owners Pat & Janell Hanlon invite you to come spend some time at the museum to take a walk through time and experience the “history of the best days of motorcycling” . Pictures of hailstones are clogging Austin's social media feeds after a brief hailstorm this morning. Williamson and Hays Counties may be a better bet for finding a vaccination appointment as near-universal eligibility begins Monday. As Texas' African-American community gains confidence in COVID vaccines, White Republicans are left as the group most likely to say no. Unsurprisingly, almost all of the Austin City Council voices opposition to Prop F, which would grant veto power to the Mayor over Council decisions - we'll vote on that on May 1. Blue-green algae, dangerous to dogs, is detected in more Highland Lakes locations. Texas Women's Basketball advances to the Sweet 16, for the 16th time. Austin FC reveals their complete inaugural schedule for 2021. And pizza pie propagates into Round Rock with a new Via 313 location.
Austin Public Health had a minor meltdown of its vaccine appointment website last night, and will try again Tuesday evening. A new COVID variant surfaces on the UT campus. Texas ranks very low in percentage of fully vaccinated residents, and Travis and Williamson counties rank at the bottom of the most-populous Texas counties by the same measure. The Texas Senate rams through a bill to force ERCOT to lower billions in energy charges during the winter storm, during which at least 57 Texans lost their lives. New help has arrived for Austin renters struggling to keep up. LCRA advises that dogs be kept out of all of the Highland Lakes due to toxic algae. And the first - and hopefully the last - fully virtual SXSW starts today.
Our guest this week is retired postman, visual artist, Bruce Young. After a 20 year hiatus Bruce returned to his art school roots to start a prolific career as a visual artist. The last decade of his 34 years with the postal office in Highland Lakes, NJ was spent drawing and painting in the stolen hours after work and the time that came available after his kids were grown. Now he can't help but make art throughout all shifts of the day as he sits working in his home studio on commissioned pieces or his own personal concepts. Bruce will work 4 or more days straight on his highly detailed pen and ink drawings so retirement is still very full of putting in some hours. This work, though, is full of customers who praise, a sense of timelessness, and an energy to get up and work in the morning that does not need an alarm clock. He may still depend on putting in overtime to get his paycheck, but making art as his second career has been a true labor of love. At this point, Young works on commissioned projects so much that he has to steal moments to create his personal works (that people often buy as well) and must remind himself to take a break to go to the grocery store or catch a glimpse of the beauty of the beautiful lake that fills the scene just outside of his studio. Bruce's home itself is an art gallery. There you can find his impressive illustrative and imaginative works, but also those of many other Highland Lakes' visual artists. In better times, he puts out a sign inviting people to stop in and check it all out. You can also find his work hanging on the walls of many area galleries and the restaurants and cafes of Vernon, NJ and just over the border in Warwick, NY. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thestolenhourspodcast/message
A new algal bloom has invaded Austin’s Lade Bird Lake killing four dogs and affecting recreational activities and could potentially affect our drinking water. Our guest, Dr. Brent Bellinger, Senior Environmental Scientist with the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department explains the issue, and how we can be mindful of it and be safe. He also gives us an update on the invasive zebra mussels that have now affected all the Hill Country’s Highland Lakes and most of the lower Colorado River below Longhorn Dam.

I had just seen him and his wife the night before for a surprise dinner. The following night, his wife called and told me of his sudden passing. We were all devastated. His funeral took place the following Saturday. It was a touching service and many of his friends and family spoke. Myself included, please see the show notes for the words that I spoke in honor of my friend and for additional details about his life. As I knew my friend so well and for such a long time and since I am a lover of music, I was asked to put together music for the funeral and reception. Having done this before for other friends and family, it was an honor to this on behalf of my friend. As my friend and I were both in our early 40's, and both grew up in the Texas hill country and on the Highland Lakes on the Colorado River; and liking the same kind of music, country music. Ranging from Country and Western to 90's Country, and any of the good stuff that Nashville put out, but mostly it was Texas Country. These songs could suffice for my own someday or for others folks of the same liking. Today, I would like to play a distilled playlist from that day in honor of my friend, this is Funeral for a Friend. Many songs were played today in remembrance of my friend. These songs are special to me and mean a lot. I hope you enjoyed them as much as we did. And there were many other songs that we just didn't have time to play here. Please see the show notes for a playlist containing this additional music. Thanks for listening.
