In addition to some other civil rights anniversaries, 2021 marks 50 years since the Supreme Court decided Younger v. Harris. There, the Court made it extremely hard for federal courts to stop an unconstitutional state prosecution. This “Younger abstention” doctrine has been with us ever since. Professor Fred Smith of Emory Law joins us to discuss what Younger's impact has been and how it has especially made it difficult to fight state court systems that have become de facto debtors' prisons. Additionally, we hear from Sam Gedge of IJ who gives us some of the background on the case and perspective on litigating civil rights cases with it looming in the background. We close with an investigation on where the heck the term “Our Federalism” (which Younger relies upon without citation) came from. Hint: Its first name is Felix. Younger v. A recent Internet meme about Pablo Picasso prompted me to wonder about how many unsold paintings and other art objects he still had when he died. This thought came to me because Democrats are proposing all sorts of new taxes on corporations and the wealthy, and I wondered how Picasso's estate might have been affected had he been subject to these taxes. That led me to wonder why the Democrats were so obsessive about taxing the wealthy. It could not be because they are suddenly fiscally responsible, because they aren't. And it is not because they are worried about the mounting public debt, because they aren't worried about that either. In this podcast, the Edifice of Trust host, Victor Bolles, looks at the real motives behind the Democrats' raising taxes. (Hint: Its politics)

To start our conversation, Skip discussed his role as the Director of Football Operations. What is it like scheduling Matt Campbell’s day and what does the bill look like for a team meal? With practice during the day, how difficult is it to schedule classes for student athletes? When Matt Campbell brought over almost his entire staff from Toledo, some questioned the decision at first. After over a year of them being in Ames it has become clear this is a big part of their success. Just how close is this staff and how much fun do they have with each other? We took a moment to discuss some of the top storylines from the spring: Allen Lazard’s senior season, Chase Allen’s first season and whether Joel Lanning will see more snaps on the offensive or defensive side of the football. With so many Ohio roots, we discussed the Akron non-conference game this fall along with the possibility of returning there for non-conference games in the future. With so many Cleveland roots, which professional sports team does this staff follow the closest? Hint: Its not one of the good ones. We appreciate Skip taking the time to join us on the podcast. Anything else you would like to know about the team or coaching staff? Let us know in the comments and we’ll ask him next time.

Joel Martin is an extremely versatile musician who is a composer and the driving force behind the power-pop band, The Running Jumps. He plays guitar, pedal steel, and loves the mellotron. I first met Joel years ago through mutual friends and we have worked on many different kinds of creative projects together over that time. His band The Running Jumps is inspired by the likes of Guided By Voices, Superdrag and the psychedelic leanings of the Beatles. One of the things that I love about the band is the attention to detail in all aspects of the production, down to the incredible artwork that evokes the feeling of the 70′s and yet still retains a modern dreamy flavor. Joel has worked closely with my previous guest Chris Schwab on many of his films and in the score for Look Closer you can hear just how versatile Joel is as a musician. Joel is also a raw vegan, and we kick this show off by talking about his reasons for adopting this lifestyle and how it has impacted his energy and focus. About halfway through the interview we talk about the  life changing car crash that nearly killed him and the journey of resilience that has followed. I am really excited to have Joel on the Podcast for two reasons. His road has been one of challenges that many of us never face and yet his kind spirit and loving heart continue to shine through. He is a perpetual learner who is always exploring new ways to express his creativity and he is happy to share his enthusiasm with the world. IN THIS EPISODE: What being a raw vegan has done for his energy Training for a half-marathon How Yoga changed his body The ins and outs of being in a band Why surrounding yourself with good people is important What a knee lever is (Hint – Its not connected to your shinbone) DISCOVERY QUOTE: “Everyday there is another opportunity to challenge yourself with”  - click to tweet!
