Send us a textI'm excited to introduce a Life With Grief guest that does some INCREDIBLE work—and is unlike any other guest we've had on before.Ashley Spence is a motivational speaker, victim advocate, and founder of DNA Justice Project; a non-profit that focuses on educating the public and policy makers on the value of forensic DNA in the criminal justice system. When Ashley was a 19-year-old college student, she was the victim of a brutal home invasion and rape that nearly took her life. She never saw her attacker's face, and it was a cold case for seven years until he was caught through a forensic DNA match. For Ashley, the levels of grief around this are deep, raw, painful and complex, and we dig into all of this in our conversation. She now testifies all over the country to support legislation that will maximize the use of forensic DNA and advanced DNA technology, and she has worked globally to spark conversations on how to come together to put an end to sexual violence.Ashley's story is truly one of incredible bravery, profound healing, and taking inspired actions.TRIGGER WARNING: This episode contains discussions about a home invasion and sexual assault.Connect with Ashley:@ashleyespencednajusticeprojecthttps://www.dnajusticeproject.org/https://www.ashleyespence.com/Learn more about Micro-Moments for Transformation and begin your evolution today: https://lossesbecomegains.com/transformation Learn more about the 14-Day Relief in Your Grief experience and begin feeling more peace and healing: https://lossesbecomegains.com/transformationWork with me: Micro-Moments for Transformation: https://lossesbecomegains.com/transformation 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Challenge: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further: Leave a voice note through Speakpipe! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGrief Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gains Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. Send us a textWe're diving into the concept of disenfranchised grief—the “silent sorrow”, as I sometimes call it. This is grief that's often not openly acknowledged, socially validated or publicly mourned, which makes it especially challenging to navigate. In this conversation we're chatting about various examples of disenfranchised grief that are long overdue for some validation—think: the loss of an ex-partner or estranged family member, unrecognized or invalidated relationships, losses that are considered “less significant” than a death, stigmatized losses, losses of a job or sense of identity, major life transitions, and more. This is truly such an underrated yet incredibly important type of grief to acknowledge, so I'm also offering some insight into how to cope and navigate this. And, as always, giving you some practical coping strategies along the way.My mission with this topic is to validate your experience and loss, and provide you tools, support, and mindset shifts to help you navigate this complex form of grief. Send us a textToday we're joined by Lauren Evans, author of the highly relatable fictional novel, “Casket Case”. I serendipitously found this novel in an airport and was immediately drawn to it, then proceeded to finish it very quickly because it was THAT good!In this episode we're talking all about Lauren's book, which intertwines themes of love and grief—two things I know will speak to so many grievers here. Her book follows Nora, a young woman who returns to her hometown after her parents' death to run their casket store, who eventually meets Garrett, a logistics coordinator for death. And yes, it's as juicy as it sounds! In our conversation we explore how grief shapes the characters' lives, and how it reflects real-life grieving experiences that we all go through—ones I have no doubt you can relate to. We touch on the challenges Lauren faced while writing about grief and loss in this way, and how writing served as a cathartic process for her.The episode highlights the importance of acknowledging grief, giving ourselves permission to feel it, and finding ways to integrate and transform this profound and deeply painful experience.Work with me: 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Challenge: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief Explore the membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further: Leave a voice note through Speakpipe! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGrief Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gains Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. Send us a textI'm so thrilled to welcome travel expert, host, and executive producer of Dream of Italy and Dream of Europe on PBS, Kathy McCabe.Kathy is so incredibly talented, and when you're watching one of her shows, you'd never know some of the trials and tribulations she's endured. I think this is such a beautiful example of never really knowing what someone is going through just based off of seeing them on social media or TV, or even in person. After unexpectedly losing both of her parents, she found herself on a journey of self-discovery and healing through her adventures across Italy.Reconnecting with her Italian heritage, building a successful career, and choosing a path that doesn't follow traditional societal norms for Gen X women of marriage or motherhood has been transformative for her. Now, she hopes to encourage others who may feel like they don't fit into these molds to find fulfillment in their own way.Today's conversation is all about embracing an unconventional path in life, and how travel helped her cope with the grief of losing both her parents.Kathy's perspective comes from her personal experiences and 22+ years of travel storytelling through her award-winning series, and we have a really beautiful and vulnerable conversation that I have no doubt you'll resonate with.Connect with Kathy:https://dreamofitaly.com/https://www.instagram.com/dreamofitaly/https://www.instagram.com/dreamofeuropetv/Discover and listen to the Taste Toast Travel Podcast, available wherever you get your podcasts and Youtube! https://tastetoasttravel.com/ Learn more about my 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Experience: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-griefWork with me: 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Challenge: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief Explore the membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further: Leave a voice note through Speakpipe! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGrief Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gains Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. Send us a textIn case you didn't already hear, I co-host another podcast called Taste Toast Travel with my husband, John, and I'm so excited to bring you an episode that bridges grief and travel in the most beautiful way. We're digging into healing through travel, and how the act of travel and exploration can help us grieve, heal, and transform.Needless to say, travel has become a transformative and healing experience in my own life, and it's something I feel is so beneficial for anyone grieving. In this episode we explore the dualities of using travel both as a way to process grief, and as a means of emotional escapism. You'll hear some practical advice as a griever considering travel, and we chat about the importance of choosing the right destination, pacing ourselves, and leaning into small moments of joy.We also dig into the therapeutic benefits of travel, how exploring new environments can help us reconnect with ourselves and the world around us, and how it offers a path to healing and personal growth. So, I hope you enjoy this episode as I much as I did creating it! Also, I hope you have the chance to check out the Taste Toast Travel Podcast, if you feel so inclined, because we have some really fun conversations over there. Send us a textToday we're chatting with Adam Zuckerman of Buried in Work, an incredible resource that simplifies estate planning, end-of-life tasks, and estate transitions.Might not sound like the sexiest topic in the world, right? I totally get it. But this is IMPORTANT stuff here. I speak from my own experience of going through a three year probate process after my parents died. And let me tell you, that hands down made my grieving experience worse. There were things that came up that I never wanted to deal with—or never thought I would have to. But that's the nature of grief, and the consequences of estate planning that wasn't at the level it should have been.In this episode, Adam shares his emotional journey of the passing of his father that led him to create Buried in Work, and shares poignant advice and wisdom about the non-linear progress of grief. And of course, we dig into the importance of estate planning, end-of-life tasks, and estate transitions in a way that's actually fun and interesting. This episode will leave you with so many resources and easy ways to implement these things in your own life, or the life of a loved one.Connect with Adam & Buried in Work:https://buriedinwork.com/https://www.instagram.com/buriedinwork/Learn more about my 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Experience: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-griefWork with me: 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Challenge: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief Explore the membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further: Leave a voice note through Speakpipe! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGrief Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gains Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. Send us a textIn light of the devastating fires in Los Angeles, I couldn't help but acknowledge this with special episode of the Life With Grief Podcast. As a Northern Californian who's no stranger to fires and other natural disasters, this episode is not only about acknowledging the tragedy that continues unfolding and showing love to the thousands upon thousands of people affected, but to address the overwhelming grief, loss, and trauma that come with such natural disasters. As encouraging as it is to see people coming together to provide relief, I also see a lack of empathy and quick judgments in many cases. It's more than just losing material items. Things that, on paper, could be easily replaced. It's livelihoods, communities, schools, homes, sentimental items, and places of comfort that are gone within a matter of hours.Today is all about the importance of compassion, the need to acknowledge the depth of this tragedy, and understanding how grief like this runs so much deeper than we realize. How to support fire relief efforts:California Fire FoundationDirect ReliefRed Cross Fire ReliefWildfire Recovery FundLos Angeles Fire Department FoundationPasadena HumaneAmerican Red Cross: LA RegionLearn more about my 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Experience: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-griefWork with me: 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Challenge: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief Explore the membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further: Leave a voice note through Speakpipe! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGrief Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gains Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. Send us a textFrieds, I'm beyond honored and excited to share the story of Zachariah Thompson of The Scatter Joy Project with you today.Without giving away too much of his story, Zach's first experience with grief was when he lost his beloved uncle, Joe, when he was in 7th grade. That, and a very frightening health scare with his mom when he was 22.Aside from having countless commonalities and a really special bond with his uncle, Zach also inherited ARVC—a hereditary heart condition that would alter his life as he knew it.In this episode, Zach and I are digging into not only his profound story, but the dual nature of grief—grieving for lost versions of oneself, and this paradoxical grief of receiving a second chance at life. This, on top of losing dear loved ones as we both have.Zach elaborates on the emotional spectrum we can feel as we're grieving, ranging from anger and resentment to gratitude, all while emphasizing how these experiences have transformed his life into a profound purpose in his work within mental health with The Scatter Joy Project.I first became familiar with The Scatter Joy Project through Instagram, ended up sharing a bunch of their content because it's SO good, and from there I just knew I had to have Zach on with us. Send us a textLet's talk about the complexities and nuances of social media and grief.Particularly during the ever-emotionally charged holiday season, social media can be both a place of inspiration, comfort, and support, but also a place where we can run into imposter syndrome, comparison, isolation, and a whole lot of emotional triggers. We'll talk about how social media can both support and negatively effect our grieving process. My goal is to offer you practical tips on setting boundaries, curating your feed, engaging intentionally, and knowing when to leverage social media as a tool for healing versus hinderance.Learn more about my 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Experience: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-griefWork with me: 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Challenge: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief Explore the membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further: Leave a voice note through Speakpipe! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGrief Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gains Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. Send us a textI wasn't planning on doing this episode this year, but frankly, I'm feeling griefy… so here we are!The more I reflect on it being five years since my mom died, the more I realized how much my grief has truly changed in that time, how the loss of my mom was affected me short and long term, and why I'm more convinced than ever there is NO timeline on grief… and I'm spilling on why. I'm getting REALLY raw and real here as I share the thoughts and feelings I have as I approach my mom's “angel day”. In this episode I reflect on how my grief has evolved over the years, particularly with the arrival of my daughter this year--which has been the greatest gift, but has certainly complicated that. Today is all about validating the myriad of emotions felt by those of us who are grieving, and how time alone truly doesn't “heal”. I also dig into navigating this during the holiday season, especially if you've lost someone around this time of year, too. Finally, we'll chat about not adhering to a timeline or feeling pressure to move on as we acknowledge the enduring impact of grief and loss.Work with me: 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Challenge: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief Explore the membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further: Leave a voice note through Speakpipe! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGrief Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gains Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. Day 5 of the 5 days of holiday grief is here! For the last episode of this mini-series, I want to talk about the balance of grief and gratitude around the holidays. And, explore the question of whether these two things can even co-exist. So many of us struggle with these contradictory emotions of grief and gratitude during the holiday season. And let's be real, it can feel like gratitude, joy, and merriment aren't even on our radar. Perhaps we're still harboring some anger or resentment or hurt. Maybe it's complicated feelings from years ago and you're still struggling—because that is the reality of grief. So, let's talk about how to navigate this very emotionally charged and complex time of year. PS—if you haven't listened to episodes 78-81 (days 1-4 of our 5 days of holiday grief), definitely go check those out because we cover some really important topics! What holiday grief looks like and feels like, how to navigate it, holiday triggers, and more. Day 4 of the 5 days of holiday grief is here! Today we're digging into re-imagining the holidays after we go through a loss, and talking about how to even begin moving forward—which I know can feel so impossible sometimes. The holidays, an anniversary, a birthday, or any other day that holds special meaning can feel like everyone around you is celebrating or going about their normal life. Meanwhile, you're just struggling to keep your head above water. This episode is going to be a little different than the other ones, because we're also doing some exercises to help us along in our healing and grieving experience. Hint hint: we'll go through some really helpful and thought-provoking prompts/questions to ask yourself, and even do a quick breathing and meditation practice! In this minisode, we're tackling one of the most—if not THE most—overlooked aspects of grieving that I see as a Grief Coach and Educator. I can't give it away here… you'll just have to listen in to see what it is! But, I CAN say we'll dig into an aspect of societal misconceptions about grieving, and of course I'll offer up some practical tips for coping with prolonged grief. This topic is something about the grieving experience that I'm always (desperately) trying to normalize. A big takeaway today is to encourage you to integrate your loss into your life in the most meaningful, impactful way that works for YOU. Today's guest is such a force of nature and an inspirational voice in the grief space—I'm truly so excited to share this episode with you all today because if you know her content even just from social media or in her books, you know how vulnerable and honest she is which we always need more of when we're coping with grief. Whitney Lyn Allen is first and foremost mama to her sons, Jackson (6) and Leo (2). She practiced law as a medical malpractice defense attorney for ten years before her husband had a severe reaction to a bee sting and sustained a severe brain injury, subsequently resulting in his death. Whitney decided to turn her pain into purpose and followed her new calling to serve others who are also experiencing grief and trauma and share her vulnerable and personal grief journey with others. She is the author of “Running in Trauma Stilettos,” which is an Amazon Best Seller, and also just released another book called “what must be carried”. Whitney is also a certified grief educator and provides grief coaching to those who are ready for their own transformation and growth after loss. She shares the empowering message that there is so much beauty in life, even after losing a loved one. This is an ideology that I am just so aligned with and speaks to everything I do at losses become gains and here on the podcast, and I'm truly so honored to share Whitney's story and uplifting perspective with you here. Today we're chatting with Matt Jacobson, the Co-Founder and CEO of Lifebooks. In this vulnerable episode, Matt shares his personal journey with grief following the loss of his father to esophageal cancer when he was just 21. Something I resonate with deeply, as I lost my mom to this type of cancer, too. In honor of his father, Matt launched Lifebooks—an innovative legacy book that allows families and friends to create hardbound memorial books through a collaborative online platform. These memorial books are designed to last for generations with contributions from various family members and friends, offering a personal and meaningful way to preserve your loved ones's legacy. Here we dive into Matt's background, his experience with coping with grief, the highs and lows of developing Lifebooks, and finding purpose amidst our grief and staying active as a means of healing.
