The song has been ringing through the rafters of Hopetown already this summer, as it does every year. It's one of our kids' favorites. They have hand motions and have the best time reminding themselves and each other of these words of truth. “My lighthouse, I will trust the promise. You will carry me safe to shore.” The song is My Lighthouse from Rend Collective and we would highly recommend you listen to it with the kids in your life. AND, we're thrilled that our new friend Ali Gilkeson has written a children's book based on the song. We can't wait for you to listen in on this rich conversation about her new book, homeschooling, bus schooling, and the power of worship for kids! Find on Ali on Instagram. In September of 2019 Diverse Voice Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Attica Locke, author of HEAVEN, MY HOME. Republishing this interview is part of DVBR's Celebration of Black Authors for Black History Month. Attica was the first African American writer to win the Edgar Award for Best Novel from the Mystery Writers of America with her 2017 novel, BLUEBIRD, BLUEBIRD.With HEAVEN MY HOME, Locke continues her exploration of race and racism in America through the prism of her crime novels. She displays it through her protagonist's reception by the local towns people in Jefferson, Texas. She also explores it through the debate his uncles that raised him engaged in on, and I quote, whether forgiveness made black folks saints or stooges. She also includes as an integral part of her story a historic black community in the area, Hopetown, that was founded by blacks after the civil war and is home also to Caddo Indians. Attica Locke is the award winning author of five novels and a screenwriter. Her novel, Bluebird, Bluebird, was the Winner of the Mystery Writers of America 2018 Edgar Award for Best Novel. She was also a writer and producer on the Emmy Award winning Netflix series about the Central Park Five, When They See Us.

Heather Millsaps and Leslie Hawkins are two of the co-founders of New Day Recovery in Fountain Inn, S.C. Both ladies and their husbands have incredible testimonies of how God delivered their husbands from drug and alcohol addiction and saved their marriages. Leslie's husband, Stephen, has epilepsy and suffered a seizure that resulted in him having brain surgery that exacerbated his existing drug and alcohol addiction. Heather's husband, Glenn, had a shoulder injury that resulted in him becoming dependent on painkillers. Both of these families walked a difficult road to recovery and, after the healing came, Leslie had a recurring dream about helping people recover from addiction. After having the dream several times, she finally shared it with her husband, who shared it with one of their church pastors, who in turn encouraged them to start a ministry. Heather, who wasn't aware of Leslie's dreams, responded in an act of obedience from a Sunday morning message saying she felt she needed to help people seeking recovery. Once these ladies and their husbands, along with two other couples, Nick and Wimberly Cox and John and Megan Phillips, got together they created New Day Recovery with the help of Capstone Church. Megan, by the way, was on episode #73 and Laura Barrineau, who is also mentioned in this episode, was my guest in episode #72. I hope you'll listen to their stories as well. You're going to love Leslie and Heather and their hearts for helping individuals and families in their recovery journey. When you're going through something hard, it's such a comfort to have someone come alongside you and say, "I understand, I've been there too. I can help." That's what this group is doing. If you or someone you love struggles with addiction, I pray this episode will give you practical ways to find hope and healing.

Hopetown is also passionate about equipping ministry leaders to care for themselves better, in order to avoid burnout, and so they can minister to their fullest potential. You will find that Zach is uniquely qualified to share this message with us today as you hear part of his story. Zach and Ashley have been married since 2010 and currently live in the Upstate of South Carolina. They have a precious little girl, Everly, and baby boy, Dax.

Sharie and Clayton invite Zach and Ashley Dickson from Hopetown to talk about one of the biggest challenges in a relationship- honesty. It’s hard to tell the truth about our past, present and future when we just want to be liked, loved and accepted by the one we love the most.
Sharie interviews her friends, Zach and Ashley Dickson from Hopetown, a Christian counseling ministry, on how to wake up from bitterness and depression. In this episode they discuss how you can find personal courage to be real with yourself and God about overwhelming emotions which feel "un-Christian." Sharie and Hopetown give useful tips for standing beside someone who is in the midst of short-term or long-term depression.
Episode 77 and the Great de Wet hunt sees the English cornering their quarry in the North East Cape Colony, close to Hopetown. The mercurial Boer general Christiaan de Wet has given up the plan to invade the Cape Colony and he's doing all he can to remain on the loose. He felt even more responsibility about the future of his commando because Free State President Steyn is traveling with him. Not that far away, in Bloemfontein the Free State capital, the British Commander Lord Kitchener and Transvaal Boer commander General Louis Botha met at the end of February, then a second time on 7th March to discuss possible peace terms. Kitchener presented Botha with a set of ten terms which the English say they'll accept to make peace. It seems an incongruous position - the Boers technically defeated most of the towns and villages in English hands, the infrastructure out of their control - and yet - here they are negotiating their position as if they had a choice. A guerrilla campaign has left most of the west, north and eastern regions decimated. Boer property was being systematically destroyed in these areas in an attempt to force the men still roaming the countryside to accept defeat - but these actions were embittering the hard core fighters. Politically, this action was to leave a scar which would sometimes burst into violence in the coming century with uprisings during the First World War. In the Second World War, hardline Boers felt empathy with the Germans and some left the country to fight in Europe. Others trained with the Germans then returned to German South West Africa to continue the war. Much of the animosity emanates from this period - and specifically from the early 1901 to early 1902 period when Lord Kitchener set the veld ablaze and ordered women and children into internment camps which were ominously known as Concentration Camps. So General Louis Botha was not really interested in the British terms but his wife had asked him to meet and simultaneously he knew his people were suffering greatly so hoped that some way could be found out of this war which he knew he could not win. Botha was also aware of the role that Sir Alfred Milner, High commissioner of the Cape played. Milner was monitoring developments and was pressing for a resolution. While Milner was concerned by Kitchener's destruction of Boer property - he was more worried about the Cape Afrikaners rising up in support of the Boers - and the British High Commissioner was influenced by investors in London.
