SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE There are albums that shake the earth. Everyone's got at least one that, after you listen to it, your world can never be the same. Of the couple dozen that changed my existence, this one here I just can't ignore any longer. I've been sifting through my LP collection these past months, pulling out releases at random, and I knew I couldn't get to this one until I was ready. I had three copies of Run-D.M.C.'s debut album. Anyone old enough to remember that period can probably guess why. For everyone else, here's the deal. I was a DJ for years, back when you had to carry crates and two turntables and two cassette players and a mixer and a mic and all that. My partner, Mike Smith, and I DJed a bunch of parties & dances, even made actual non-metaphorical mixtapes. We also loved to perform ourselves (you heard us last Saturday doing an original rap song), and our two go-to bands to cover were the Beastie Boys and Run-D.M.C. (who toured together and were actually quite good friends for a while). If we just wanted to play the tracks, we used one good copy of the album. If we wanted to mix them, we needed a second copy to do the scratching – which in my case unfortunately led to me ACTUALLY SCRATCHING the vinyl. (I wasn't winning any hip-hop awards.) If we wanted to PERFORM them, we needed the instrumental versions, which back then they sold in certain stores where DJs would buy shit from. (Mike & I often went to Chestnut Street in Philly to get our stuff.) So three copies. And it was appropriate that I owned that many of this album. When it came out, my entire neighborhood went crazy. There was the dude who was amazing at popping & locking. Then there were the dudes who could memorize and rap all the lyrics to all the songs. That was my brother & me. I think I was Run and he was D.M.C. We had our favorite cuts for sure, but basically we could perform the whole album front to back. I had gotten into rap (later AKA hip-hop) before – “Apache”, Kurtis Blow, “Planet Rock”, etc. – but when this album came out, it sealed the deal. From then on, hip-hop was a part of my life and my musical development. I started writing rap lyrics when I was a teen, and hip-hop as a genre – or at least a production influence – has been a part of my go-to suite ever since. The song I shared last Saturday is possibly the earliest recorded evidence, and the song below from this year is the latest: REC - “The Power of Repetition (Everlasting)” (from the album Synocpy for the Weird) Relistening to this album, I can tell you I ain't picking favorites. Then applied to become an assistant for a large multi-op DJ company in Illinois. Later I moved to Arkansas and found CAE. I love my job. Mario has traveled the world, acted in movies, served in the military, become a husband and a father, and DJed for thousands of beautiful young “in-love” couples. Mario might be a “one-upper” but at least Mario has the skills to one-up. Solstice debuts as the remarkable summer mix of 2016. This mix has special meaning to me as it is dedicated to the victims of the Pulse Orlando shooting that took place in June. This vocal-infused house music experience celebrates life and the community of the dancefloor and is intended to keep you uplifted and smiling and dancing all night long. Stylistically, it has a few nods to the 1990s when I DJed every week in Orlando, and also has some summer gems from the past few years in addition to brand new music. Enjoy this house celebration.

After a couple of lesser spotted DJ stars, we now look to someone who has blown up in a very short space of time. Based in the Windy City, The Black Madonna has not only released some highly sought after, steamy disco-house 12”s on Argot, Stripped & Chewed and The Nite Owl Diner, but so too has she started making her mark as chief booker at Chicago’s famous Smart bar. As well as this, she has found time to lay down sets all across Europe and North America and this latest podcast proves why the opinionated feminist is so in demand. It is a kinetic and athletic mix that goes from deep and heady to jump up and jacking, from diva vocals to dazzling disco and one that both starts and ends with a fat bottomed reggae swagger. She says of the mix: ”I had so much fun doing this. I got snowed in at the house where all the guys from Stripped & Chewed live. We're lucky the electricity stayed on. There was a terrible blizzard here! So I just stayed there and recorded. It's the first time I DJed since my hearing came back too. I had a little audience trapped with me, so was a great time.”

To mark New Zealand Music Month Waiheke Library hosted a series of music performances each Saturday during May. Happy New Year to all my Podcast listeners! What a year this has been. 2011 has provided me with so many great memories. Some of my greatest moments was when I Djed during Miami's Winter Music Conference which included a crazy Yacht  party with the Bingo Players , Another crazy moment was when I Djed in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, As well as Becoming the Resident DJ at Sublime and VLive Chicago where I was given the opportunity to open up for some of the biggest names in the industry.  With over 50,000 Podcast listeners from around the world I want Thank You! for all the support and a huge thanks to the club owners and promoters.
