Making Midge Ure's New Guitar with Jimmy Moon

Scottish guitar maker Jimmy Moon receives an order to make a custom-built acoustic guitar from musician Midge Ure, as the craft of handmade musical instrument making is put in the spotlight in this edition of In the Studio. We follow the process from Midge's initial specifications of size and finish, to the picking of wood, joinery, engineering work and finishing by Jimmy and his assistant Stephen Devine, to final delivery to Midge. Midge needs a new acoustic to use on stage for a series of shows where he's stripping back his solo hits and those as front man with electronic 80s band Ultravox to perform them with just an acoustic guitar. Jimmy has eight weeks before Midge returns to Glasgow, and we follow this master instrument maker as he creates the guitar that will accompany Midge's catalogue of classic tunes including If I Was, Vienna, Dancing with Tears in My Eyes and the Band Aid classic Do They Know It's Christmas. Along the way, Midge talks to guitarist supremo Martin Taylor about the different requirements for him as a jazz guitarist compared to Midge's rock style. Midge throws up a challenge requesting an all-black matt finish, a first for Jimmy's order book, so he has to juggle design as well as creating musical tonal perfection.

29 October 2020 at 7 pm was the date and time that Episode 11 of season 3 of The Story of Rock and Roll aired.   It was quite a show, unusually chatty and with only one little balls-up which I left in there in the interests of reality. Don't adjust your set after Iced Earth's 'Burning Times' it just takes me 30 seconds to twig that the mic wasn't on :-)  The joys of live radio.  It was a very lively show with plenty of people chatting on the Discord server and on Whatsapp.  We kicked off with 'Majestic' the traditional Journey opener but instead of more Journey, we cracked on with Metallica and Dio.  I started the local stuff early with another track off Johnathan Martin's amazing album Into The Nebulous Night.  Following up with Jack Hammer just made sense.  Punk happened in the form of The Stranglers and The Clash and there was plenty of classic metal and rock such as Iron maiden with 'The Trooper' and Judas priest with 'Hell Bent For Leather'.The highlight for me was Bruce Springsteen with 'If I Was the Priest', as I said he's not called The Boss for nothing.  We also learned how to pronounce Bonamassa and took a listen to a track off his new album called 'Royal Tea'.   All in all, it was good fun and we had a lot of laughs.  Oh P.S. if any of you eve read this I'd like to know because I am not sure if I am wasting my time :-)Artists featured:  Ozzy Osbourne, Journey, Metallica, Dio, The Cult, Social Distortion, Wolfmother, White Zombie, Johnathan Martin, Jack Hammer, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Audioslave, L.A. Guns, Bullet For My Valentine, the Clash, The Stranglers, Armored Saint, Joe Bonamassa, Blue Oyster Cult, Sixx A.M. On today’s episode:If I Was Rich: From Short Story to Dancehall ClassicI think it was in episode 2 that I mentioned how our West Indian brothers and sisters will remix any and all songs so this is the first of a number episodes that will feature some of my favorite use of samples, of remakes and remixes by Caribbean artists. Rich Girl by Louchie Lou and Michie One is probably the first time I remember hearing a dancehall song sample a song that is so clearly NOT of reggae or even soul or R&B origin but I didn’t immediately know it was a sample and remake of If I Was a Rich Man from the musical Fiddler on the Roof. It’s quite possible that my mother overheard it and asked if I was listening to Fiddler on the Roof but I could just be making that up. I can’t really remember how I discovered where the song was from but it was the first time I thought, man, Jamaicans will make a dancehall remix of ANYthing.SONG CREDITS:If I Was a Rich ManFiddler on the Roof Original Motion Picture SoundtrackChaim Topol, John Williams1967Rich GirlLouchie Lou, Michie One1993Rich GirlLove, Angel, Music, BabyGwen Stefani, Eve2004LINKS:A Sample, A Cover playlistFacebookEmail:  spacetimemusicpodcast@gmail.comThe SpaceTimeMusic theme is a sample of the Ana-Tole x Jonah Christian Remix of Ready or Not by the Fugees. On a completely different note, if you are in need of some centering, healing, calming music I highly recommend the Healing Vibes series from Yogetsu Akasaka, a Japanese Zen Buddhist monk/live-looping artist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUoG8MfKNoQ

Self Help for Life Podcast: Self-Improvement | Mindset | Emotions | Personal Development | Health | Business Success | Financ

This podcast is about my successes and achievements in 2019. Creating this podcast was a little strange because it was all about me! This is not something that I normally do!However, I realize that many people enjoy learning more about me as a person, how I do things and what makes me tick. This is probably the reason that reality TV has become so popular. So, in this podcast, I talk quite a lot about Self Help for Life and how it has grown massively in 2019.I also share the success that I'm having with my Hypnotherapy practice in Sydney. I now have over 500 client hours and that was a big achievement for me.I'll reveal the key influencers in my life and the people that I learn from. I'll talk about books that I've read, the courses I attended and a cool meditation gadget that I have been using.I've had a lot of fun in 2019 as well. I've travelled to Borneo, Malaysia, Singapore and Ko Samui (in Thailand). I talk about these trips and include some photos as well.Products and services mentioned in this podcastF:100 day challenge: https://selfhelpforlife.com/100daychallengeMarissa Peer Masterclass: https://selfhelpforlife.com/marisa-peer-masterclassHypnotherapy with me: https://selfhelpforlife.com/hypnotherapyMuse brain sensing meditation headband: https://selfhelpforlife.com/museSony MX1000 Mk3 Headphones: https://selfhelpforlife.com/sonymx1000mk3Most popular video blogs. How to Hypnotize yourself: https://selfhelpforlife.com/how-to-hypnotize-yourself/Reticular Activating System and Goals: https://selfhelpforlife.com/reticular-activating-system-and-goals/The Four Main Personality Types: https://selfhelpforlife.com/four-main-personality-types/The 7 Best Ways to Create a Burning Desire for Success: https://selfhelpforlife.com/burning-desire-for-success/The 12 Common Thinking Traps that Steal Your Happiness https://selfhelpforlife.com/common-thinking-traps-steal-happiness/How to Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind for Success: https://selfhelpforlife.com/reprogram-subconscious-mind/Top 3 Personal Development InfluencersAlex Haynes: https://youtube.com/modernhealthmonkMarissa Peer: https://selfhelpforlife.com/marisa-peer-masterclassStefan James: https://projectlifemastery.comMusic and Book linksMetric – Art of Doubt: https://selfhelpforlife.com/metric-artofdoubtKeane – Cause and Effect: https://selfhelpforlife.com/keane-causeandeffectMidge Ure: If I Was (Autobiography): https://selfhelpforlife.com/midgeure

The follow-up, If I Was, came out in 2015, followed by a collaboration with yMusic in 2017. Jess's dad taught her to play guitar when she was in her mid teens and, within a few years, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in music. A few weeks ago, she came to my house with her beautiful Martin HD-28 to share a pot of coffee and tell me all about her guitars, playing and where The Staves are up to with album No 3. Enjoy. Steve Cooper talks with singer/songwriter Willie Nile.  Willie became a popular fixture in the Village’s folk clubs in the late 70's, while drawing equal inspiration from the emerging downtown punk scene. He won a deal with Arista Records, which released his first two albums, Willie Nile and Golden Down, to considerable acclaim in 1980 and 1981 respectively. Despite a series of legal disputes that caused him to walk away from the music business for nearly a decade, he resumed his recording career successfully in the ’90s, recording Places I Have Never Been for Columbia Records, before going the D.I.Y. route with such well-received indie albums as Beautiful Wreck of the World, Streets of New York, House of a Thousand Guitars, The Innocent Ones, American Ride, World War Willie and the low-key piano-based departure If I Was a River. Throughout his career he’s amassed an enthusiastic international fan base that includes such admirers as Bruce Springsteen, with whom he’s guested onstage on several occasions, and Pete Townshend, who personally requested him as the opening act on the Who’s historic 1980 U.S. tour. The list of avowed his fans also includes Bono, Lou Reed, Paul Simon, Ian Hunter, Graham Parker, Jim Jarmusch, Adam Duritz, Little Steven and Lucinda Williams. He recently his eleventh studio album, Positively Bob: Willie Nile Sings Bob Dylan, a heartfelt, personally charged set of Dylan covers that honors its subject while exemplifying the same qualities that have distinguished his work since the beginning.

Those familiar with Melbourne’s independent dance scene will know Stephanie Lake. A dancer and choreographer, Lake’s CV has a long list of credits including Chunky Move and Lucy Guerin Inc. She started dance reasonably late for a woman, and forged a career through her unique physical style. Lake said: “My hair would never go neatly into a bun … I didn’t know any of the ballet language… I think that it can actually be a positive, because you want individual voices in the arts.” Lake continues to push expectations of the form and is known for physically demanding choreography. She was awarded the Australian Dance Award in 2014 for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography, and the Helpmann Award for Best Choreography in Dance or Physical Theatre Work 2014 for A Small Prometheus. Mix Tape (2010) received the Green Room award for Best Choreography. Her work has toured to Germany, France, Ireland, Denmark, Singapore and Australia with a range of work including : Mix Tape; AORTA; Dual; Double Blind and If I Was. She now spends the majority of her time as a choreographer and a mother of two children, but is still dancing and continually finding a balancing between all of her passions and the responsibilities of motherhood. Lake has been commissioned by Sydney Dance Company, Chunky Move, Dance North, Tasdance, Stompin, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Frontier Danceland (Singapore). We met in the noisy foyer of the Malthouse early on a cold Melbourne morning, before she was starting a new development, in the pipeline for 2017. Our conversation moved from discussions of process, motivation, goals and children. We started talking about moving from a career primarily dancing to one of choreography. Stephanie Lake early in to her choreographic career is set to make her mark as a prominent Australian choreographer. If you have enjoyed this discussion share it with a friend. Stay tuned for another stimulating episode. We will be hitting the web in two weeks time as we continue to explore the world of dance, with interviews from Deborah Jowett, Joshua Pether, Gideon Obarzanek and Rafael Bonachela in the pipeline. “I get so nervous going in to rehearsal … I have these fantasies about jobs where you are not witnessed”
