Audrey II was more than just a mean green mother from outer space. Back in 1984, and voiced by Levi Stubbs, he was the main attraction of the movie musical, Little Shop of Horrors. Based on an off-Broadway show, which itself was based on a 1960 horror comedy of the same name, the Frank Oz directed flick achieved cult classic status on VHS and Beta. But now, decades later, are we still singing its praises? Are abusive boyfriends, exploitive bosses, and blood-thirsty plants the stuff of sing-a-longs? Or is this Rick Moranis' finest hour? The Old Roommates head down Skid Row and give it all a revisit through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. Nebbish Seymour Krelborn finds an extraterrestrial plant that offers him everything he wants—fame, money, the love of his coworker Audrey—in return for fresh human blood. What started as a 1960 Roger Corman schlockfest is turned into a campy musical from the guys who brought us… The Little Mermaid? Wait, really? Starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, and Bill Murray. Written by Howard Ashman. Music by Alan Menkin. Directed by Frank Oz
Join us down on Skid Row with our latest episode - "Somewhere That's Mean: Settling Scores Feasts on Little Shop of Horrors." Categorizing LSOH (with music by Alan Menken and lyrics/book by Howard Ashman) is a bit tricky. Here's our best effort: it's a genre-crossing cult classic chamber musical with elements of dark comedy, horror (obviously), and sci-fi with a ton of catchy Motown-inspired earworms and a giant puppet. Phew. While the musical does venture into heavier themes of ambition, morality, sadism, and the dangers of unchecked desire, the story is balanced with moments of humor and genuine heart, particularly in Seymour's tender interactions with Audrey, who dreams of escaping her abusive relationship and finding a better life. Join us as we discover and discuss the roots of this campy, brilliant, B-movie inspired musical and have a bloody good time along the way." The cast and creative team of the original production of “Little Shop of Horrors.” In the front at center are Howard Ashman, left, wearing plaid, and Alan Menken, lying on the floor. Howard Ashman directing Ellen Greene, who played Audrey. “He just loved me, and when a director just adores your creativity, your creativity blooms,” she said.
We're kicking off Alright Scary with Frank Oz's under-sung movie musical “Little Shop of Horrors”! While not the spookiest pick on the list this month, it's certainly got the best balance of bonkers and beautiful. Plus all those homoerotic overtones in the dentist's office, Levi Stubbs' vocals, the perfection of Ellen Greene, and a Greek chorus by way of Crystal, Chiffon and Ronette. In a surprise twist, Ben & Rob stop by the ‘Little Shop Of Horrors', an incredibly fun remake of Roger Corman's 1960 original horror comedy, with a musical twist! Starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, John Candy and Steve Martin, this animatronic wonder of eighties cinema tells a disturbing tail of space invaders, murder, love and horticultural horror with equal parts star power and catchy melody. With the sad news of Roger Corman's untimely passing this month, we thought it best to revisit a movie SO packed with Ben's special interests that it can't help but put a smile on his face! But how did this movie create practical effects nearly unmatchable since it's 1986 release? Why do both of our hosts have such deep and intense fear of dentists? But it's not just about these brilliant performances; these two 80s gems also delve into fascinating themes about the darker side of humanity: capitalism and human greed. Did you know that the version of Little Shop of Horrors we all know & love, starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene & Steve Martin, is an adaptation of a 1982 Broadway musical, which itself is based on the original 1960 Roger Corman film of the same name? Now that the previous run-on sentence is over, here's another one to explain that in 1973, some hack named Carl J. Munson made a porn parody titled "Please Don't Eat My Mother". Film critic Morgan Roberts joins the show to discuss 1986's Little Shop of Horrors starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, and Steve Martin. We'll discuss the elite group of movie musicals the Frank Oz-directed film belongs to, the staggering puppetry that brings Audrey II to life, and explore why some of our favorite movie musicals go to some very dark places. Ellen's poignant portraits of individual elephants combined with her comprehensive and deeply considered compilation of often surprising scientific research on elephant physiology, psychology and the importance of elephants to humanity, emphasize the looming tragedy of their possible extinction. In addition to ELEPHANTS – Up Close and Personal, published by Toplight – an imprint of McFarland & Co., Ellen is the author of Kaleidoscope (about the intersection of art therapy and dementia), Magnolia Street Publishing; Superheroes Unmasked (an emotional literacy curriculum for grade school children), Youthlight Publishing; and Mental Health in Rural America, Routledge Publishing, as well as numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. “Little Shop of Horrors” is an iconic American horror comedy musical turned film, but simply put, it is a cult classic. Starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia, and countless iconic cameos, “Little Shop” somehow makes murder endearing when paired with a catchy, early 1960s rock & motown soundtrack. The film follows Seymour, a nerdy flower shop attendant, who seizes an opportunity to jumpstart the straining business, as well as a hopeful romance with his co-worker Audrey. Discovering an alien plant that feeds only on human flesh and blood, this adaptation of an Off-Broadcast musical toes the line between chaotic camp and creative comedy. To honor the madness, personality and mogul, Michelle Collins, joins Matt to dive into everything from the sexuality of an alien plant to the featured tentacle work. This special Halloween edition of Broadway Nation! This is the first part of my conversation with Adam Abraham, author of Attack of the Monster Musical – A Cultural History of Little Shop Of Horrors. In this terrific new book Adam relates the unlikely story of how Roger Corman's schlocky, low budget, 1960's monster movie was transformed 20 years later into a smash hit, long-running, Off-Broadway musical that became an international sensation and spawned a hit film musical adaptation as well. And of course, today Little Shop Of Horrors is a hit all over again and can currently be seen in another long running off-Broadway production. Adam Abraham is a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at Auburn University, and he also has taught at Virginia Commonwealth University, NYU, and Harvard. His previous books include When Magoo Flew: The Rise And Fall of Animation Studio UPA, and Plagiarizing The Victorian Novel: Imitation, Parody, Aftertext. He has also written for film, television, and theater. Attack of the Monster Musical provides us with a fascinating, in depth, look into the dynamic partnership of Howard Ashman & Alan Mencken and their creation of what I believe is one of the best and most perfectly crafted musicals of all time. Topics discussed in this episode include: How Howard Ashman was influenced by the cast album of GYPSY; how he discovered Roger Corman's film in the first place; his first musical The Candy Shop; the truth behind the legend that Corman shot the original movie in just two days; NYC's Off Broadway scene during the late 1970s and early 80s; the WPA Theater; how an early version of Little Shop bombed at the BMI Workshop; the casting of Ellen Greene & Lee Wilcoff (and how Nathan Lane & Faith Prince were almost in the original cast); why the show never moved to Broadway; what Cameron Mackintosh, David Geffin & the Shubert Organization have to do with the show; how the dream team of Ashman & Menken worked together; and the tragic loss of Howard Ashman. This is an interview that I did with the author of a fantastic book. Recorded on WIOX Community Radio. Here is a review from Booklist.[Stewart's] mix of memoir, travel journal, and elephant behavioral overview offers a unique perspective on how wildlife tourism can mesh with the conservation of an endangered species….The up-close and personal profiles of each elephant, combined with the author's reminiscences about her experiences with them, make for an unusual look at forest pachyderms and at a place successfully committed to their protection….[Readers] will be fascinated by Stewart's close encounters with free-roaming elephants.”―BooklistSupport the show

Dead Air - Oliver Stone's Talk Radio On this week' s episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Mr. Chavez & I sit down to talk an underseen Oliver Stone film . . . Talk Radio (1988). From an original theatrical production (produced Off-Broadway), Eric Bogosian tells the story of Barry Champlagne - provocateur, shock jock, vile human being. It's a wonderful debut from an actor we don't see nearly enough of. Along with Bogosian, Stone peppers his film with a wonderful supporting cast including: Ellen Greene, John C. McGinley, Leslie Hope, John Pankow, Michael Wincott, and Alec Baldwin. There's a whole lot to break down. Take a listen and let us know what you think. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.
26 years after the original, a Frank Oz-directed musical bloomed and flourished with stunning production values, great songs, and a stellar cast including an endearing Rick Moranis, super-belter Ellen Greene, and Steve Martin taking on the psychotic dentist role. There aren't many seeds of dissent to be sown this time--it's less about which movie is better and more about which alternate ending of the remake we prefer. Da-doo! Merry Musicals May continues with our landmark episode on a landmark musical, Frank Oz's Little Shop of Horrors from 1986!This movie is a delight from front to back. We're gushing about Ellen Greene & Rick Moranis' disparate voices, the design of Ashman & Menken's soundscape, the puppetting tours de force, and how it takes the time to rub our noses in its anti-consumierism message. We talk at length about how the three endings this movie has: the original movie ending, the off-Broadway musical, and the somehow darkest-timeline version that failed the preview process. Plus, Erin's cursed casting choices cause Nick psychic harm.Next week we're entering the 21st century with Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge! (2001)

"Feed me, Seymour!" On this episode of our 1986 series, Scott Hoffman joins Jeff for a garden variety conversation about Little Shop of Horrors that is sure to knock your stalks off (two puns in the first sentence?)! Scott provides a rich history about the property, from stage to screen to remake! Connections to Batman, the puppetry of Martin P. Robinson, great options for the Nintendo faceoff, and music that makes you want to turnip the volume (okay, that was the last pun) are among the topics that bloom (okay, but really that was the last pun) on this episode! And for more on Martin P. Robinson, check out the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry's "Little Shop of Horrors" forum at the following link https://www.facebook.com/BallardInstitute/videos/273676570307412/

Little Shop Of Horrors was a black comedy musical film directed by Frank Oz. Released in 1986, it was an adaptation of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's off-broadway musical of the same name, which itself was an adaptation of the 1960 science fiction film directed by Roger Corman. It featured Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, and Steve Martin, and a carnivorous plant that came from out of nowhere, but immediately causes trouble for the citizens of Skid Row.On this episode of Hell Is A Musical, Scott and Lilz welcome their first ever guest; theatrical actor and director David Allen Prescott, to dig into Little Shop Of Horrors, marvel at the practical effects and catchy songs, and be thoroughly perplexed at the rare occurrence of a really genuinely good movie on this show....with Lilz & Scott!
A flytrap-like plant that feeds on blood is the only thing keeping a failing flowershop alive? What could possibly go wrong? Roger Corman's B-Movie shot in 2 days inspired an off broadway musical, and was famously re-adapted in 1986 with Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene (reprising her off broadway role). “Find Your Bill Murray”Hey everyone! We're releasing one quick episode from the vault (it's our last one, we swear) while we gather equipment to transition into recording remotely. Eli goes to his first gay wedding and finds out turning 30 means passing the point of no return. The Fact of The Gay centres around Richard O'Brien (Rocky Horror) who… Maybe we need to talk about? Speaking of musicals, Ellen Greene is a beautiful queer icon and QoTW, specifically for singing Suddenly Seymour FOR DECADES NONSTOP! Also oscar-winning performances in trashy films and for the love of God, rate us 5 stars. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
THE MILKSHAKE BOOM are back this week to discuss Robert's movie selection: 'Talk Radio'! This 1988 film, based on a stage play written by star Eric Bogosian, is directed by Oliver Stone and also stars Ellen Greene, Alec Baldwin, and John C. McGinley!
