We talk about movies & music all the time on Baconsale, so why not combine the two? Joel and Kent struggled while trying to decide which of their favorite music videos they should pick for categories such as Best Choreography, Favorite One-Hit Wonder Video, Most Inventive, and Made You Like the Song Less, whereas Zack is just trying to make the few music videos he's seen in his life fit into each category. Nevertheless, we all decided that this episode is brought to you by Michael Jackson's “Thriller,” and we've also limited how many OK Go videos we can pick. Whether you're a fan of MTV, Fuse, VH1, The Box, YouTube, or Vevo, press play! Also, be sure to check out our YouTube playlist of the songs we try to describe on this episode.

It's time for another visit with Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins Tom Hall each week with her reviews of the Maryland-DC-Virginia regional stage. Today, Judy tells us about the current revival of the Tony Award-winning 1966 Broadway musical, Sweet Charity, brought to The Motor House stage by the new Bmore Broadway Live drama troupe. With book by Neil Simon, music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, Sweet Charity follows the romantic misadventures of Charity Hope Valentine, a “taxi dancer” — or dance partner for hire — at the Fandango ballroom. The musical earned nine Tony nominations in its 1966 Broadway season, and won for Best Choreography. It's filled with humor, romance and pathos, and driven by energetic dance numbers. The revival of Sweet Charity by Bmore Broadway Live — the new theatrical offshoot of the local arts group, Dance & Bmore — is directed and choreographed by the new troupe's founder, C. Jay Philip. It continues at The Motor House at 120 W. North Avenue in Baltimore through Sunday, November 19. Héctor Flores Jr. is a multi-hyphenate Latino theatre professional whose work meets at the intersection of art and advocacy. Héctor was born in New Jersey and raised by his Puerto Rican grandmother and his single mom. Luckily his mother believes in cultural enrichment & education which instilled a hunger for knowledge, art and change within him. The artform that chose him, however, wasn't made in his image. After being a first-generation college graduate Flores embarked on a career in musical theatre that continues to inspire him to find new ways to break barriers for Latinx people. Hector is the president of Theatre Barn Records. Theatre Barn Records is a new imprint of Broadway Records and is dedicated to original musicals in development. New York Theatre Barn, which has served as a home for new culture shifting musicals during incubation since 2007, has been evolving its unique development-based programming since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a new program of New York Theatre Barn, Theatre Barn Records will support writers in recording and releasing concept recordings of new musicals in development on global streaming platforms. Theatre Barn Records offers a worldwide marketing platform for musical theatre writers and has the potential to create revenue for writers while their show is still in development. The focus of Theatre Barn Records is to continue to incubate and elevate projects that we are already developing while evolving our storytelling systems. In this critical digital age that we now live in, EP's and concept albums of original musicals in development are potentially the fastest and most lucrative ways that musical theatre writers can now be noticed, supported, and advanced while their shows are in development.
Guest: Kristen Brooks SandlerDirector, Choreographer, CreatrixFounder & Artistic Director of Thistle DanceToday marks our first interview episode with an incredible guest who challenges what sustainable, collaborative, inclusive, consent-based work can look like. Not only does she share how she holds space for both the person and the artist but the collaborative framework she believes (and we do too) has the power to make a bigger impact on our industry at large if we all chose to meet each other with more transparent authenticity.Kristen (she / her) is an award winning director and choreographer whose work can be seen on screen and stage. Purple haired & proudly queer, she is committed to physical storytelling, believing in movement as the language that bridges the gap between audience and artistry. On stage, she has directed & choreographed musicals, immersive work and original dance creations at regional & international theaters. Her screen credits include work on set with Nickelodeon and Hallmark, & her films have been featured in festivals in over 30 countries. Her first original creation, won Best Dance and Physical Theater at the Capital Fringe Festival, and she has since been nominated for many awards, including a New York Innovative Theater Award for Best Choreography. Her company, Thistle Dance, uses movement as the primary language to conjure wonderfully strange creations challenging our codified perception of history and lore. The company is currently in their second year of creating the immersive experience “UNBOUND” in partnership with the New York Public Library, opening in October. Before leading her own rehearsal rooms, Kristen worked as a performer alongside such creators as Andy Blankenbuehler, Savion Glover, Karma Camp & Connor Gallagher. Luke Sheppard and Jenn Weber are two creative geniuses currently teaming up for the smash hit, "& Juliet", as the show's director and choreographer, respectively. The two discuss the instant connection they had and where the concept for the show originated. While making "& Juliet" was originally a stretch for him, Luke recalls how it was also the most satisfying and fun he's ever had directing a show. The two recall how their journeys with "& Juliet" began, and how the workshops helped in getting the story and tone right. For Jenn the most exciting part is collaborating with the director and writer. The two take pride in the show's culture where there's room for support and honesty for each other. While Jenn and Luke's stories on how they got into theatre differ, the two share a common approach when it comes to pursuing their dreams: not taking no for an answer—a true testament that rejection doesn't mean failure and that you don't have to follow the traditional path that most people take to get to where you want to be. Luke Sheppard is a British theatre director known for his work in the West End and on Broadway. He studied at the University of Warwick before going on to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Sheppard's directing credits include the West End productions of "In the Heights," "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾," and "The Comedy About a Bank Robbery." He also directed the Broadway production of "& Juliet," which opened in 2019. Sheppard has won several awards for his work, including the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival for "In the Heights" in 2016. Jenn Weber is a choreographer and director who's also a double Tony Award nominee for the 2022-2023 Broadway season with nominations for Best Choreography for her Broadway debuts of “& Juliet” and “KPOP”. She made her West End debut as the choreographer of “& Juliet” and collaborated with Disney+ as an Executive Producer and Choreographer for a new film version of “The Hip Hop Nutcracker”. Her Off-Broadway choreography credits include “KPOP”, “Teenage Dick”, “Cruel Intentions”, and “Stockholm”. Adam grew up in Northeast Ohio where he attended Cleveland State University (2006). Formally studying classical percussion throughout his education, Adam also actively performed as a freelancer on drum set. Today's guest is Pacific Northwest Ballet Soloist, Jonathan Batista! Jonathan started his training at a social project in Rio de Janeiro's City of God slums. His talent was then spotted by his teacher which took him to a pre-professional dance division at Alice Arja Ballet School where he started his journey in Classical Ballet. I won't spoil the story about how Batista went from this humble beginning to performing all over the world – he shares this wonderful story in our conversation – but I will tell you that during 2017-2021 he has performed with Oklahoma City Ballet as a Principal Dancer. Whilst with the company, Jonathan created two world premieres, winning ‘Best Choreography of the Year' by the National Destined 2 Dancer Award and in 2021 he won the ‘Art Culture & Music Award' by the TAF AWARD FOUNDATION for his contributions in representation, activism, work and contributions to the dance community in Oklahoma. In this conversation we cover growing up in Brasil, the importance of having an entrepreneurial spirit if you're going to have a successful career as a dancer and most notable his mission to create more diversity, equity and inclusion in the dance world. Batista is a man with a mission and like all humans who want to make a difference in this world, he is incredibly focussed, driven and organised. We cover his insane morning routine and disciplined practices – but of course there's some balance in there too… I really loved chatting to Jonathan, in fact when recording was done we spent another few minutes sharing diary recommendations and organisation tips! I have a feeling we're cut from the same cloth… I wish Jonathan all the success in the world and would like to thank him for carving out some precious time to share his story with the Balanced Ballerinas community. As always you can find me on Instagram @thebalancedballerina and you can find Jonathan @jonathanbatistaofficial – I love when people actually comment on the latest podcast tile on the official @balancedballerinas account, so come say hello and let us know what you enjoyed in this episode.
