Uncover the shocking secrets of classic works of art by da Vinci, Holbein, van Eyck, and others! Hidden symbols and surprises are revealed in famous artworks that will amaze you.
Joku & Rosa discuss 'A Complete Unknown' a 2024 American biographical musical drama film directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks, about American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald, the film portrays Dylan through his earliest folk music success until the momentous controversy over his use of electric instruments at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. We also discuss 'Memoir of a Snail' a 2024 Australian adult stop-motion animated tragicomedy film written, produced and directed by Adam Elliot. It stars the voices of Sarah Snook, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Eric Bana, Magda Szubanski, Dominique Pinon, Tony Armstrong, Paul Capsis, Nick Cave, and Jacki Weaver. Lastly, we review 'The Wages of Fear' a 1953 thriller film directed and co-written by Henri-Georges Clouzot, and starring Yves Montand, Charles Vanel, Peter van Eyck and Véra Clouzot. The film centres on a group of four down-on-their-luck European men who are hired by an American oil company to drive two trucks over mountain dirt roads, loaded with nitroglycerin needed to extinguish an oil well fire. Sara Wheeler explains why every week for several decades - despite knowing nothing about art - she has called in to London's National Gallery to look at the same two paintings. 'This habit of mine,' writes Sara, 'started by accident when I moved to London forty years ago' when she first set eyes on Botticelli's 'Portrait of a Young Man' and van Eyck's 'Portrait of a Man.' 'I have come to realise,' says Sara, the extraordinary power of 'familiarity, close contact and regular attention'.
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Hannah French presents the second of two programmes of highlights from the 2023 London International Festival of Early Music, today focusing on their support of young, up-and-coming artists. The OAE Experience Ensemble offers students the chance to play alongside seasoned professionals, and you can hear them playing music by Haydn and Mozart, as well as students from Chethams School of Music in Manchester, and London's Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the Junior Royal Academy, performing music by Telemann, Purcell and van Eyck.
China's One Belt One Road policy, or OBOR, represents the largest infrastructure program in history. Yet little is known about it with any certainty. How can something so large be so bewildering? In One Belt One Road: Chinese Power Meets the World (Harvard East Asian Monographs, 2020), Eyck Freymann, a DPhil Candidate in China Studies at the University of Oxford, explores the nature, function, and purposes of OBOR. Drawing on primary documents in five languages, interviews with senior officials, and on-the-ground case studies in Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Greece, Freymann sifts through the purposeful ambiguity of the Chinese Communist Party and unravels a series of popular myths about OBOR. He finds that OBOR is not controlled by a monolithic state apparatus; that recipient nations do not consider OBOR a debt trap; and that appeal of OBOR is growing, not shrinking. Ultimately, Freymann argues that the infrastructure projects are a sideshow to something else: Xi Jinping's project to restore China's greatness in world affairs and to solidify his place at the helm of the new Chinese empire. John Sakellariadis is a 2020-2021 Fulbright US Student Research Grantee. After the last episode produced some stinkers, Carlin and Rebecca turn their attention to a sour beer from New Jersey and a hoppy offering from Maryland. One of the two impresses.
In Psalm 85, we hear of the the graciousness of God toward Israel, and then a confession for a continual need for that grace and kindness from God. How does this reveal our need for Christ and his work? Where does salvations start? Does it start with me or does it start with the foundation laid by Christ's suffering, death, and resurrection?Image: Adoration of the Lamb from the Ghent Altarpiece, Hubert van Eyck, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.

Diego Velazques was one of the most significant painters of Spain's Golden Age in the 17th century. He was a master of both portraiture and genre painting, Las Meninas is a sort of mix of both. We see people who seem rather formally dressed by today's standards, but the subject is also, it was a peak behind the curtain of royal life. Withing the work, the first focal point would be the little girl, the infanta margarita, daughter of the king and queen of spain. She is dramatically lit from the side by light streaming in from the window. The top half of the composition is essentially in shadow, and we see her looking out at us, the viewers. Diego Velazquez included himself in the scene as he stands before his giant canvas. Within this oil on canvas painting, we see a representation of a painter working on canvas. Velazquez also seems to break the fourth as he looks out at the viewer. There is a figure standing in the doorway in the back of the composition. The strong light in the doorway pulls our focus there as a secondary focal point, and that figure seems to be caught in motion and again, he looks out at us, the viewers. Jan van Eyck was a remarkable painter. He worked in oils during the Renaissance, and created stunning photorealistic portraits centuries before photography was developmed. In the Arnolfini portrait, he captures not only the subjects standing before him, but also a reflection of the room in a convex mirror showing the full scene and accurately rendering the distortions caused by the curved glass. The Life and Times of Walter Reuther: An Unfinished Liberal Legacy by James Ten EyckThe Life and Times of Walter Reuther recounts the events and social movements that have shaped modern America and the role Walter Reuther played in many of them. For over thirty years Reuther and his United Automobile Workers Union were in the vanguard of voices advancing economic and social policies that raised the standard of living for many Americans. Reuther serves as a lens through which a period of labor advances, civil rights struggle, and hot and cold war are viewed. The book traces the formative years of the Reuther brothers in Wheeling and follows Walter and Victor Reuther's European adventure to their ancestral homeland during the rise of Hitler and into the Gorky Autoworks factory in Soviet Russia. The pair returned home to help lead the labor battles in Flint and Dearborn that established a UAW presence in the factories and ultimately brought Walter Reuther to the bargaining table to negotiate historic labor agreements. Reuther's story includes assassination attempts, confrontations with Senator Goldwater and Nikita Khrushchev, and a presence on the national and world stage for a quarter of a century. The book also discusses attitudes toward immigration and race throughout the twentieth century that echo in our discourse today.James Ten Eyck received a B.S. ion Mathematics from Lafayette College in 1963. After graduation he worked at IBM, Endicott for five years before leaving to obtain a Ph.D. In Physics. He began an academic career that included adding an M.S. in Computer Science from WPI and retiring after a twenty-five year tenure at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. While at Syracuse he met and married his wife Veronica and welcomed the couple's only child, David.https://www.amazon.com/Life-Times-Walter-Reuther-Unfinished/dp/1960946161https://jamesteneyck.com/http://www.Crown888Press.com http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/11124jtecr.mp3

The episode begins by exploring Xylon's transition from a media personality to the world of sports and cycling and his battle against cancer at 26. Initially shocked by the diagnosis, Xylon shares his journey of resilience and the emotional challenges he faced. Ashleigh also recounts her teenage ordeal with a head injury that almost damaged her brain and a later illness that shortened her aspirations of conquering the Tour de France. The discussion highlights the profound impact of sickness on the human psyche and the endurance required to overcome such challenges.Xylon and Ashleigh discuss the origins of the Rocacorba Collective and its significance in their personal journeys. Xylon, hailing from a disadvantaged South African community, recounts his passion for cycling and his determination to provide opportunities for others who aspire to reach the highest levels of the sport. Ashley shares her inspiring experiences in Eritrea and her realisation of the potential to support African women in pursuing cycling excellence in Europe. The conversation takes an intriguing turn as Ashleigh describes her discovery of the virtual world and indoor cycling during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognising women's enhanced confidence and engagement in the virtual space, she saw an opportunity to foster community and empower women through indoor training platforms like Zwift. This realisation sparked the birth of the Rocacorba Collective, which extends beyond physical cycling tourism to a global virtual community. The collective's core objectives include providing training plans, coaching sessions, and building connections with riders in South Africa and beyond. Through strategic collaborations with organisations like Culture Cycles, the collective aims to break barriers and create a blueprint for eCenters in underprivileged African communities. durée : 00:59:06 - Les Cours du Collège de France - par : Merryl Moneghetti - Quelle est la longue histoire transfrontalière du Retable de l'Agneau mystique des frères van Eyck à Gand? The Ghent Altarpiece is an extensive and highly detailed polyptych or multi-paneled altarpiece, that was created by the Flemish artist Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert van Eyck in the early 15th century. The altarpiece is considered to be one of the most important works of art from the Northern Renaissance. In the late nineteenth century, the Berlin Museum, which then owned part of the paintings belonging to the Ghent Altarpiece, separated the painted fronts of these panels from their backs, which were also painted, by sawing them apart. This harsh measure was intended to facilitate the exhibition of the panels and their inspection by an art-loving public. But it also served to obscure the fact that the panels were created as ecclesiastical objects for display in a church, and to stress their character simply as art.
In this episode, we discuss the Ghent Altarpiece that was created in 1432 by two brothers ,Jan van Eyck and Hubert van Eyck. This episode takes you on a journey on how the art piece was lost, stolen, and sought after by many because of its rich history and meaning that gave it value. But after being in so many hands throughout history, someone was bound to mistreat it. Berlin museum sawed it in half to and put it on display for the world. Here we will be discussing whether or not this controversial splitting is a mistreatment of a religious piece or if it was a necessary evil to portray the significance of the altarpiece.
The adoration of the mystic lamb, also known as Ghent Altarpiece, was begun in the mid-1420 and completed before 1432 by Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert. Jan van Eyck was a Flemish painter who was one of the founders of Early Netherlandish painting, the medium that Jan van used was oil and oak wood to make this painting. There is no convincing information to determine artistic attribution. The Ghent Altarpiece is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in Saint Bavo's Cathedral chapel in Belgium, but it was moved for security reasons to the main cathedral chapel, where it is today. The altarpiece is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world's treasures. The Altarpiece has been the victim of 13 crimes since its installation, and seven thefts. Nearly 600 years old, the panels have been threatened by theft, war damage, peace settlements, outbreaks of iconoclasm , and have suffered fire damage. The idealization of traditional medieval art gives way to realistic representations of nature and humanity.
Jan van Eyck was a remarkable painter. He worked in oils during the Renaissance, and created stunning photorealistic portraits centuries before photography was developmed.
