If you can't figure out how to play Joe Bonamassa's solo from “Blues Deluxe,” don't worry. It all changes when Shifty sits down with Bonamassa for this special episode of Shred With Shifty. No surprise that both of them reach for their Les Pauls, and Bonamassa even reveals why he switched from Strats to Gibsons in the early 2000s. Bonamassa is known for his dazzling collection of vintage guitars—which he says has become a target for haters—but he explains that you don't need a '58 Les Paul to get the goods. “It's also the mystique,” he says. “If Jimmy Page played a Tokai, everyone would want a Tokai.” A guitar made two weeks ago, he says, is just as good as a classic. Bonamassa's lightning-quick soloing style, which conjures a hurricane of major and minor pentatonic notes with some phrygian flair, is the stuff of legend, and his tricks on “Blues Deluxe” are plenty. Even though he tries to adhere to a “divide by two” rule to simplify his phrasings, he still stumps Shiflett with a volume swell trick he learned from Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton. This solo is no walk in the park. Any brave takers up for giving it a shot? Share it and tag us so Shifty can have a look! Most importantly, remember to have fun. “Do whatever you want with the damn thing,” says Bonamassa. “It's just a guitar.” Click below to subscribe to the podcast! Joe Bonamassa, who opened for B.B. King at age 12, was a cocky 26-year-old blues-rock guitar virtuoso when he made his breakthrough third album, Blues Deluxe, in 2003—and an established 46-year-old when he released Blues Deluxe Vol. 2 in the fall. In a thoughtful conversation, Bonamassa reflects on all that has happened in between, how he has grown as a musician, taken control of the business side of his career and launched his own label and foundation, both called Keeping the Blues Alive. He also weighs the impact of artificial intelligence on music. Would the blues be the hardest kind of music for robots to fake? (Photo by Adam Kennedy)

When he was 12, Joe Bonamassa started his career in blues-rock by opening for the legendary B.B. King. Somehow, things only got better for his career from there. Bonamassa has since been nominated for three Grammy Awards, had the number one position on the Billboard Music Blues Charts 26 times and been noted as one of the pre-eminent modern day blues-rock guitarists. But in reality, he is much more. Bonamassa is a tremendous songwriter and vocalist, but also continually demonstrates his passion for preserving and elevating blues as an art form beyond his music. Through Bonamassa's philanthropy, the Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation, he's working to chart a path and raise millions for children in music. At the same time, he's also helping guide and manage rising artists through his management agency and record label, Journeyman Records. Bonamassa recently dropped a fantastic live concert film and album shot at Red Rocks in Colorado while he is also celebrating the 20-year-annivesary of his groundbreaking independent album Blues Deluxe with the just-released studio album Blues Deluxe Vol. 2. This all brings us to a terrific conversation with Joe as he visits the Load Out music podcast. Enjoy!

We've featured loud rigs. We've stood strong in front of Matt Pike's octet of Oranges, been washed over with waves of volume from Angus Young's nine Marshalls for AC/DC's “small gig setup” in an arena, trembled from J Mascis' three plexi full stacks, and even withstood Bonamassa's barrage of seven amps at the Ryman, but nothing prepared us or compared to the Godzilla-rising-from-the-Pacific roar that is Sunn O)))'s auditory artillery. And it's more than the sheer sight of 14 amps and 16 cabs or the dishing of deafening decibels; it's the interplay of these characters and their conductors.“The third member of the band is the amplifiers!” laughed Greg Anderson in a 2014 interview with PG. “We use vintage Sunn Model Ts from the early '70s. They're a crucial part of the show. I've got more amps than I have guitars.”Stephen O'Malley takes a more metaphysical outlook to the connection between him and the thundering Model Ts. “My philosophy is that I'm just part of this bigger circuit of the instrumentation,” he says. “You have, of course, the amplifier valves, the speaker, effects pedals acting like different and various voltage filters, the air in the room, and the feedback generated from all this equipment, so who's in the band is immaterial.”We learned more about O'Malley's perspective when, following a 90-minute drive southeast from Nashville to Pelham, Tennessee, and a short descent into The Caverns, the Sunn O))) guitar tag team welcomed PG's Chris Kies onstage for an amplifying chat. O'Malley details his signature Travis Bean Designs SOMA 1000A, while Anderson explains how a broken guitar led him to his beloved Les Paul goldtop. Both pay homage and reverence to the eight Sunn Model Ts that form the band's foundational tonal force, and explain why the LM308-chip Rat influenced their Life Pedal collaboration with EarthQuaker Devices.Special Silver 25th anniversary edition of the V.3 Life PedalSunn O)) Official WebsiteBrought to you by D'Addario XPND Pedalboard.

Go see Joe's Dumbles in person: https://jbonamassa.com/tour-dates/ (https://jbonamassa.com/tour-dates/)  Dipped In Tone begins its partnership with Premier Guitar with Rhett Shull and Zack Broyles visiting Joe Bonamassa in Nerdville East, his Nashville home and museum. They talk vintage gear, guitar obsession, innovation versus tradition, and Dumbles. Many Dumbles … including a rare—even among these ultra-rare custom-built amps—example with a DI port for acoustic guitar made for the late songwriter Hoyt Axton. Bonamassa also explains his philosophy about taking guitars worth hundreds of thousands of dollars on the road and to local gigs, and what the future holds in store for his collection of 500 instruments—every one with a story. Also, our hosts “dip” Chris Shiflett's rig, offering the Foo Fighters guitarist a few “pointers” on rebuilding his massive pedalboard while ogling his refinished 1957 Les Paul and his custom-built Telecaster called “the Cleaver.” But before they dive deep, Schull shows off his recently acquired 1989 R9 Les Paul from Norm's Rare Guitars, and Broyles shows off the new super-Muff style Positron Cascading Amplifier Distortion. After moving back to New York City, Joe Bonamassa spent some lockdown time in Germano Studios in Manhattan's NoHo neighborhood, tightly winding the music for his latest album, https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/joe-bonamassa (Time Clocks). His longtime producer Joe Shirley had to work with the powerhouse guitarist remotely, from his home in Australia. Yet the result is as seamlessly Bonamassa as ever, with riveting guitar work that has echoes ranging from Africa to Led Zeppelin. “My ADD transcends into my musical life,” the other JB told longtime Premier Guitar contributor Joe Charupakorn in our December feature. “It's a very different record for me. It's not a blues record, for sure. I just try to make records that don't bore me all the way through—we've got this groove covered, we've got that groove covered, let's put a sorbet in, something out of left field.” They don't serve sorbet at Nashville's hallowed Ryman Auditorium music hall—although I'm putting that in their suggestion box. But Bonamassa did dish out plenty of guitar flambé at his August 2 headliner there. And melded the music of Time Clocks with a selection of some of his favorite classic and original blues. PG's JB—that's me—connected with Joe onstage before the show, where I also did a https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-joe-bonamassa-2018 (Rig Rundown) with that other guy with my initials in 2018. This time, there were some new members of Bonamassa's ever-growing-and-shrinking collection of gear—which he spoke about at length earlier this year with Cory Wong on the rhythm guitar kingpin's https://www.premierguitar.com/podcast/wong-notes/joe-bonamassa-interview-podcast (Wong Notes podcast) for PG—pressed into service, including some recent-arrival Les Pauls, of course, and perhaps the most covetable collection of historic badass amps ever played on the Ryman stage. But rareness, novelty, or familiarity isn't what determines which toys come out to play. Bonamassa starts by building a rough set list, and then chooses the right instrument and amps for each song. So, watch, look, and listen! Brought to you by https://ddar.io/xpnd.rr (D'Addario XPND Pedalboard).

29 October 2020 at 7 pm was the date and time that Episode 11 of season 3 of The Story of Rock and Roll aired.   It was quite a show, unusually chatty and with only one little balls-up which I left in there in the interests of reality. Don't adjust your set after Iced Earth's 'Burning Times' it just takes me 30 seconds to twig that the mic wasn't on :-)  The joys of live radio.  It was a very lively show with plenty of people chatting on the Discord server and on Whatsapp.  We kicked off with 'Majestic' the traditional Journey opener but instead of more Journey, we cracked on with Metallica and Dio.  I started the local stuff early with another track off Johnathan Martin's amazing album Into The Nebulous Night.  Following up with Jack Hammer just made sense.  Punk happened in the form of The Stranglers and The Clash and there was plenty of classic metal and rock such as Iron maiden with 'The Trooper' and Judas priest with 'Hell Bent For Leather'.The highlight for me was Bruce Springsteen with 'If I Was the Priest', as I said he's not called The Boss for nothing.  We also learned how to pronounce Bonamassa and took a listen to a track off his new album called 'Royal Tea'.   All in all, it was good fun and we had a lot of laughs.  Oh P.S. if any of you eve read this I'd like to know because I am not sure if I am wasting my time :-)Artists featured:  Ozzy Osbourne, Journey, Metallica, Dio, The Cult, Social Distortion, Wolfmother, White Zombie, Johnathan Martin, Jack Hammer, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Audioslave, L.A.
