S8E4 was prerecorded on 22 Jan 2025 to allow me to attend the Green Day, Offspring, and Fokofpolisiekar gig live in Cape Town on 23 Jan the night this show went out on Rebel Rock Radio.   And what a gig it was.  It seems like forever since South Africa got International bands of that calibre.  The last time I was out for a show was for Guns N' Roses in 2018, and then Covid happened and KISS got cancelled and that was the last time I was at a live gig.  So, it was amazing and one of the best shows I have ever seen.  Hats off to Fokofpolisiekar who show just how good they are amongst the best international acts in the world  Anyway back to this show.  We had all the normal features; Twisted Triplets, Evolutions:  Judas Priest, The Immortals, and This Week in Rock and Metal, PLUS The  Diabolical Challenge is back.  We looked at four albums produced  Martin Birch.  Heaven & Hell, The Number of the Beast, Rising, and Assault Attack by Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Rainbow and Michael Schenker Group respectively.   Artists featured:  Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Emigrate, Def Leppard, Saxon, Rose Tattoo, ACDC, Goodbye June, The L.A. Fokofpolisiekar are a household name in South Africa, and rightly so - their honest, insightful and highly intelligent lyrics are delivered with powerful, intricate guitar work, propulsive drums and bass, and Francois Van Coke's raw-throated vocal. And it's this magic combination that formed a band who truly connect with people, on multiple levels and across genres and walks of life. The band's history is well summed up in the epic documentary 'Fokofpolisiekar' - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/video/detail/amzn1.dv.gti.0eafcf3f-cc57-9552-80ed-bf687d8c6276?autoplay=0&ref_=atv_cf_strg_wbAnd Francois has now told another side of the story in his awesome book, 'Hoe Ek Dit Onthou' - https://woordfees.co.za/en/program/francois-van-coke-hoe-ek-dit-onthou/Fokof continue to be very active, both as a band and in their various side projects including Van Coke Kartel and AKing. Their last album 'Dans Deur Die Donker' came out in 2023, so there's a lot of creative mileage left in the tank - and it's befok. In this short but awesome chat we tried to get to the heart of what made Fokof so great.Find out more about Fokofpolisiekar here: https://www.fokofpolisiekar.co.za/ Hosted on Acast. S7E12 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 21 March 2024.  It was full throttle out of the gate with Dio and ‘Evil Eyes'.  We had some new music from Dan Patlansky, Judas Priest and Bruce Dickenson.  Most interesting is a new single from Vended.  I am really digging Vended a lot, sons of Slipknot, literally, Griffin Tayor and Simon Crahan doing their parents proud.   To remind you to get tickets for next year's Green Day, The Offspring, and Fokofpolisikar concert in Cape Town and JHB we again took a quick track from each of them.   This weeks Twisted Twins featured a song called 'Lost in Hollywood'.  The new Judas Priest is out so obviously we continued to rave about that.    This week's Immortals feature was incredible.  Mark Knopfler has assembled 60 musicians, mostly guitarists (he's got Ringo and his son Zak on drums and Sting on Bass), and it is a veritable who's who of guitar.  The track has been recorded by Mark Knopfler and Friends to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.  It's a new version of 'Going Home' (Theme from Local Hero) and, it includes contributions from among others Joe Bonamassa, Slash, Springsteen, Joe Satriani, Steve Lukather, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, John Mc Laughlin, Brian May, the list goes.  Incredible.       This week's Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘L'.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Loverboy – Get LuckyLed Zeppelin – Over the Hills and Far AwayLynyrd Skynyrd – Second HelpingLive – Throwing Copper Artists Featured: Dio, Chickenfoot, Phil X & the Drills, ACDC, ZZ Top, Saxon, Motörhead, The Union Underground, Overkill, Black Tide, Alice Cooper, Doomsday Outlaw, Michael Schenker Group, Guns ‘n' Roses, Volbeat, Rainbow, System of a Down, Judas Priest, Bruce Dickinson, Bullet For My Valentine, Machine Head, Green Day, The Offspring, Fokofpolisiekar, Loverboy, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Live, Metallica, Megadeth, Vended, Piet Botha & Jackhammer, Joe Bonamassa, Dan Patlansky, Pink Floyd. The Story of Rock and Roll. S7E11 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 14 March 2024.  Last week we invented a new feature which, thanks to some audience participation, has become known as Twisted Twins.  It involves playing two songs with the same name but by different bands.  We continued with Twisted Twins on this show as well as the usual favourites The Diabolical Challenge and The Immortals.  The new Judas Priest is out so obviously we continued to rave about that.  There is also a new Pearl Jam album coming and we took a listen to the title track 'Dark Matter.  Plus we have great news!  Green Day, The Offspring and Fokofpolisiekar coming to SA in January 2025.   This week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases an artist in a way that typical < 5 min radio tracks can't.  This week we had one of the world's most beloved bands – Pink Floyd and the 11-minute masterpiece off Animals titled ‘Pigs (Three Different Ones)'.  Log overdue some might say, excuse the pun.       On The  Diabolical Challenge, we looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘K'.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: King Diamond – AbigailKrokus – One Vice At a TimeKiss – Lick It UpKid Rock – Rebel Soul Artists Featured: Nazareth, Mustasch, Buckcherry, Accept, Ratt, Iron Maiden, Volbeat, Green Day, The Offspring, Fokofpolisiekar, Great White, Jelusick, Cold Chisel, Airbourne, Mark Haze, Butch Walker, Tool, Pearl Jam, The Clash, The Stranglers, Annihilator, Burning Witches, Infanteria, Metal Church, Pink Floyd, King Diamond, Krokus, Kid Rock, KISS, Rush, Velvet Revolver, Elton John, The Beatles, Judas Priest, Saxon, Arch Enemy, Circus of Power.  The Story of Rock and Roll. S6E13 kicked off at 19h00 sharp on 30 March 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio.  The show started a bit differently with a track called ‘City Lights' by Motionless In White, from there normality was restored with Scorpions and Motörhead.  We went back to Germany for 'Buck Dich' from Rammstein and then shifted to the USA for some Aerosmith, and a track on the Get a Grip album titled 'Walk on Down'.   Follow the list below for the deatils.  In terms of highlights we had the brand new Metallica, title track of their forthcoming album 72 Seasons.  It is wonderful, if you don't like it then I gotta say maybe you never liked really liked Metallica, maybe you should admit they are just not for you.  The weekly interview was with Ross Harding and it was very cool to catch up with him and discuss his brand new track ‘Everything is Black'.  The Ultimate Challenge this week looked at 4 albums from 2000.  The candidates were Iron Maiden – Brave New World, Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory, Disturbed – The Sickness, and In Flames – Clayman.  Iron Maiden was the clear winner this week, Hybrid Theory did next best.  The Immortals slot was awarded to Judas Priest and we basked in the glow of ‘Victim of Changes'.   The Punk part was filled by The Stranglers, Sex Pistols and UK Subs, this to celbrate my brand new Stranglers T-Shirt, this is a bucket list shirt and the story behind it is buried near the end of the show.  We went out heavy with Dark Tranquility and Parkway Drive. Artists featured:  Motionless In White, Scorpions, Motörhead, Rammstein, Aerosmith, Nickelback, Volbeat, Buckcherry, The Rolling Stones, The Black Crowes, Nita Strauss & Alice Cooper, Hatebreed, Metallica, Hellfighter, Queensrÿche, The Longshot, The L.A. It is that time of year again, Dan Patlansky's guitar weekend down in Clarens.  This episode went out on Rebel rock Radio on 2 March 2023 at 19h00.  It was a bit messy, but messy is good, let me know if you disagree.  We kicked off with Fokofpolisiekar and their classic rock anthem, ‘Hemel Op Die Platteland, and followed up in quick succession with Airbourne, Grand Funk Railroad, and Mötley Crüe.  We heard from the ladies pretty early in the show, two stellar guitarists Sophie Lloyd and Laura Cox showing the way.  From there we checked out some Queen of Queen II and the opening tracks of My Chemical Romances masterpiece The Black Parade.   We broke radio rules and played Nickelback with no problem at all, I love Nickelback, I think Chad Kroeger is a phenomenal songwriter and has a golden voice.  I think the hate is coming from people piling on because others don't like them.  Be your own person and admit that there is nothing wrong with Nickelback

Episode 40 went out live on 6 Oct 2022 at 19h00 on rebel Rock radio.  We kicked off with The Who and 'I'm Free' which was fitting seeing as I have just finished nearly three years of study and now have a lot more time to dedicate to The Story of Rock and Roll.  It was a pretty laid-back start by TSORR standards featuring stuff by John Cougar, Black Stone Cherry, and Jimmy Barnes.  The pace picked up with Motörhead and when we went to Germany to visit Rammstein and Scorpions with ‘Zwitter' and ‘Wild Child' respectively.   The next part of the show covered some classic '70 and '80s stuff from Golden Earring and Pat Benetar.  Instead of KISS we took a listen to a Gene Simmons track called ‘Living in Sin.  We changed pace with some Billy Talent (no he is not singing “I gave my life to Satan” :-), listen carefully) and Matthew Good Band out of Canada.  From there a good dose of Serbian Metal from Claymorean and then my current favourite thrash band out of San Franciso, Hell Fire, by now no strangers to this radio show.  Check out their new album Reckoning. The Punk came courtesy of The Clash, Die Toten Hosen, and Rancid, Carnival in Rio (Punk Was) went down very, very well.  Pairing George Lynch and Jeff Beck back to back was a great idea, listen out for those solos on the Lynch Mob and Ozzy tracks.   We hit the final straight with some great new SA stuff, another band out of the Devo Oosthuizen stable, this week a band called Forth Son South, and then we had Code 106 from their Alium EP.  From there some Springbok Nude Girls and classic Fokofpolisiekar.  A highlight of the show was a quick little tribute to the amazing Eddie Van Halen who passed away 2 years ago to the day.  You'll always be special to me Eddie RIP and thank you for everything. The ending was also very cool, we went acoustic with Rush, off Rush in Rio, and a track called 'Resist' and then Live with ‘Overcome', recorded live in Amsterdam at the Paradiso.  we then finished off with a bit of Neil Young and out with Megadeth off the new album The Sick, The Dying.......and The Dead.   Artists featured:  The Who, Fozzy, Black Sabbath, Jimmy Barnes, John Cougar, Black Stone Cherry, Motörhead, Rammstein, Great White, Scorpions, Pat Benetar, Seether, Stone Sour, Gene Simmons, Golden Earring, Billy Talent, Matthew Good Band, Pixies, Claymorean, Hell Fire, Led Zeppelin, Nibs Van Der Spuy, Eddie Van Halen, Van Halen, Die Toten Hosen, The Clash, Rancid, Kid Rock, Lynch Mob, Ozzy Osbourne, Kane Roberts, Fourth Son South, Code 106, Springbok Nude Girls, Fokofpolisiekar, My Chemical Romance, Linkin park, Rush, Live, Neil Young, Asphyx, Megadeth

Episode 34 of Season 5 kicked off on 25 August 2022 at 7 pm on Rebel Rock Radio.  ACDC got us out the blocks with a track off Power Age called ‘Gone Shooting, We stayed in that style of rock and checked out The LA Maybe, a band out of the Carolinas, and an awesome track called 'Sucker Punch'.  In recognition of the fact that the world is pretty fucked at the moment we took a listen to ex-Hanoi Rocks and glam icon Michael Monroe with a track called ‘Junk Planet'.  Then we got heavy with Burn The Priest, the band that were Lamb of God before they became Lamb of God and a Melvins cover called 'Honey Bucket'.  Then we followed on from last week with another track off Bring Me The Horizon's incredibly good album Sempiternal.  One of the highlights of this show was an awesome track by SA band Fear of Falling, this was a new single they released called ‘All My Time'.  SA music is world-class, always has been always will be.   We took in some Metallica off Kill ‘Em All and then changed the tone with The Offspring and a track called 'Self Esteem'.  Noodles on guitar got some love for his guitar sound.  Ibanez and Pitbull Amps are apparently the secrets.  25 August is famous for being the birthday of two of the greatest rock stars the world has ever known, two guys who had a huge influence on me personally as a kid discovering this awesome music.  I am talking about Gene Simmons and Rob Halford, to celebrate their birthdays, 73 and 71 respectively we took a listen to Gene with 'God of Thunder' off kiss Alive II and Rob with 'Victim of Changes' off Unleashed in the East.  Those two albums got played to death when I was growing up and I used Kid Rocks' anthemic 'Still Something' off his latest album Bad Reputation to hammer home the point that in the 70s and 80s music rock music was special.  From there it was Tom Petty followed by Bruce Springsteen with a lovely sentiment in his track “Further On (Up The Road) off The Rising.  God remember that hey?, 9-11, seems like a lifetime ago and it took the Boss to put it all in perspective as only he can. The show went heavy again with a new band called The Halo Effect, made up of ex-members of In Flames and Mikael Stanne from Dark Tranquility, it's well worth a listen, the album is called Days of the Lost.  There was no way we were going anywhere without taking another track off the stupendous new Arch Enemy album, Deceivers, the track we heard was ‘Spreading Black Wings', from there is was My Chemical Romance and Oasis time and a bit of Billy idol thrown in for good measure.  The end of the show was a bit self-indulgent and took us back to some good jols in Cape Town, the scene was set with Kobus!, The Uninvited with 'The Poultry Christ' and Fokofpolisiekar with some Neil Young thrown in.   Kobus! with 'Die Volk Van Main' is a very special song, Theo Crous and Francois Blom got it right here.  The only huge disappointment with all this was that after Neil Young I explained how we used to use Tom Waits to clear the Whammy Bar in Cape Town and then I said cheers and goodnight and I assume that I didn't hit the mic button so we have a 60 min silence and no Cheerio until Tom Waits takes us out with 'Mr Siegal.  Sorry about that.   Artists featured:  ACDC, The L.A. Maybe, U.D.O., Michael Monroe, Warrant, Adrenaline Mob, Burn the Priest, Bring Me the Horizon, Fear of Falling, W.A.S.P., Metallica, The Offspring, Great White, Baton Rouge, Kiss, Judas Priest, Kid Rock, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen, Jasper Dan, The Halo Effect, Texas Hippie Coalition, Arch Enemy, My Chemical Romance, Oasis, The Professionals, Billy Idol, Stiff Little Fingers, The Distillers, Kobus!, The Uninvited, Fokofpolisiekar, Neil Young, Tom Waits

Episode 24 of season 5 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 16 June 2022.  It was workers' day and being a Thursday most people took the gap and the long weekend.  It was incumbent on TSORR to provide the soundtrack to the jol.  With that mission in mind, the show kicked off with the Thin Lizzy classic ‘Cowboy Song'.  From there it was time for some Clutch off the wonderful Blast Tyrant album and a track dedicated to the Gupta Brotherc called 'Subtle Hustle'.  From there we ended in a weird little bit where every song was about Moving On.  George Thorogood got it started with 'Move It On Over', then we had two different songs called 'Move On' first by Walter Trout and then followed by Paul Stanley.  Speaking of Paul Stanley it seems pretty certain that we are not going to see Kiss in SA.  Thanks, Covid ☹ It was time for some metal so we moved on to Queensrÿche and Accept.  The Accept track was called 'The Abyss' off Blood of Nations and featured an awesome little Wolf Hoffman bridge about 3 min in, check it out.  Next, we went political and dedicated a song by The New Black called ‘Send in the Clowns' to the politicians.  The hair metal days were celebrated as they always are on the show, this time with Ratt and Poison, Warren DeMartini, and CC de Ville showing exactly what the fuss was about.   For the Metal, we had Slayer, Cradle of Filth, Testament, Megadeth, and Wolf.  Tom Petty, Kid Rock and Pride & Glory gave us a bit of laid back, what I like to call, heartland rock. Pride & Glory was Zakk Wylde's outfir after he left Ozzy but before Black Label Society.  The track 'Found a Friend' was dedicated to Athol and Margie who have been TSORR lifers since the show started in 2017.   We didn't get any UK punk in this episode so that's pretty rare, instead we took a lightning tour around the world ending up in South Africa via Germany, Canada, Japan, Australia, and France .   Oh, and of course, the new Kreator is out so we played a track called 'Crush the Titans'.  We ended heavy with Kreator, Slayer and Slipknot, albeit mellow Slipknot with a track called ‘Snuff', with about 8 min left it made sense to go from Slipknot to Nickelback to Hinder, why the hell not it's only Rock and Roll and we like it.  Cheers for now, catch you next episode.    And Jaques got his drums.Artists featured:    Thin Lizzy, Clutch, George Thorogood, Walter Trout, Paul Stanley, Queensrÿche, Accept, The New Black, Tesla, Ratt, Poison, Slash, Wolf, Joe Bonamassa, Megadeth, Marilyn Manson, Cradle of Filth, Testament, Audioslave, Stone Temple Pilots, Billy Talent, Blink 182, Kid Rock, Tom petty. Pride & Glory, Scorpions, Rush, Gary Moore, Loudness, ACDC, Gojira, The Black Cat Bones, Fokofpolisiekar, Kreator, Slayer, Slipknot, Nickelback, Hinder.

Episode 4 of Season 5 aired on 27 Jan 2022.  I think I will always consider this the episode I lost control of.  Doing these shows is a bit like doing a gig, you have the songs and the sequence in our head and you play them in a way that seems to fit and sometimes everything flows and one thing leads to a better thing and that to a better thing, and other times everything doesn't seem to fit.  The biggest problem is when you get technical shit and lose your rhythm.  I lost wifi on one laptop but the show stayed up which is all that matters.  We started with Backyard Babies and Chickenfoot and then made our way through some early Halestorm and a track called 'I Get Off'.  Faith No More and Tool got a look in for the first time in a while and I give top marks to Tool for the lyrics to 'Aenima'.  They were just what the doctor ordered.   I suggest pulling them up while you listen to the track.  We said cheers to Meatloaf who sadly passed away last Friday.  Meat had a huge impact on everyone growing up in the '70s, Bat Out of Hell was one of those freakish, outsize albums, selling north of 35 million copies that just took the world by storm.  We took a listen to 'Rock 'n' Roll Dreams Come True'  of Bat Out of Hell II.  SA music got 4 in a row with 12th Avenue, Sugar Drive, The Burning, and Fokofpolisiekar.  We had nothing from Aussie, zero, nada, zip, that has to be a first, and was quite a shock when I realised it.  Apologies to my Australian friends, amends will be made next week.  The Punk section was also unusual with nothing from the UK, we checked out Ramones and then a track called 'Bad Habit' off Smash, The Offspring's breakthrough album.  Are Offspring considered Punk?  No idea, these labels can be a bit tedious at times.  A highlight for me was Don Babylon with 'Ow, My Tiny Heart'.  I think it's one of the greatest choruses ever written.  It must be impossible to finish that song live, it will just loop on forever.  Artists featured:  Backyard Babies, Chickenfoot, Halestorm, Ozzy Osbourne, Dokken, Def Leppard, U.D.O., Faith No More, Tool, Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders, Therapy?, Ramones, The Offspring, Walking Papers, Meatloaf, Arch Enemy, Judas Priest, 12th Avenue, Sugar Drive, The Burning, Fokofpolisiekar, Savage, The Pretty Reckless, Sheryl Crow, Ryan Adams, The Rolling Stones, Audience, Billy Gibbons & Vivien Campbell, Don Babylon, Eluveitjie, Scorpions, Metallica, Slaughter, Mötley Crüe, Sepultura

Episode 44 of Season 4 aired on 4 Nov 2021 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio.  Kicking off with Van Halen and running through a series of rockers from the likes of Quiet Riot, Chrome Division and Jorn got the show off to a lively start.  We had a bit of prog for a change, Porcupine Tree and Mastodon doing the honours.  I have always seen Mastodon as a metal band despite the prog label attached to them.  They have definitely moved in that direction in the last 10 or so years.  We celebrated 20 years since Nirvana's Nevermind and played 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and more grungy stuff from L7, then into a very cool cover of 'Boys of Summer' by The Ataris.  For some reason, we had fewer of the classic bands like Judas Priest, Aerosmith & W.A.S.P than normal.  I think it's probably the first time ACDC didn't get a run.  We also made up for the lack of SA music last week and checked out Fokofpolisiekar & Arapaho.  I needed to wrap up the elections theme that I started last week and The Uninvited and The Burning, out of Cape Town and Benoni respectively stepped up for the job.  The final word on elections was given to Deangersmith from his album Lead Me To Your Taker (Disable the Corrupt) and a track called ' The Bigger They Are The Harder They Fall'.  P.S. The Hollywood Vampires track featured Jeff Beck, I couldn't find it during the show.  P.P.S after hearing this again I found a bit at around 2:08 where I obviously didn't put the microphone on.  It's after AMH before Arapaho and I had been asked to mention to people that all those letting off firecrackers for Guy Fawkes / Divali are terrorizing a lot of very loved pets.  Please forgive the gap and don't adjust your set.  It's about 60 sec but feels like forever from my perspective :-( Artists featured:  Van Halen, Wolf, Quiet Riot, Jorn, Chrome Division, Hollywood Vampires, Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey, W.A.S.P., Avenged Sevenfold, Rob Zombie, System of a Down, Porcupine Tree, Mastodon, Nirvana, L7, The Ataris, The Clash, We Are Harlot, Trivium, Judas Priest, Manowar, Danko Jones, Buckcherry, Demon, Faith No More, Aerosmith, AMH, Arapaho, Fokofpolisiekar, Hinder, Dave Hause, Neil Young, The Uninvited, The Burning, Audioslave, Clutch, Massive Wagons, Volbeat, Deangersmith

Episode 39 of Season 4 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio, incredible how the year is flying past!  We kicked off with 'The Mob Rules' brilliantly covered by Adrenaline Mob.  The track came off a tribute to Ronnie James Dio album called This is Your Life.  It set the show off to a blistering start.  It fell to Alice Cooper and Slash's Snakepit to pick up the pieces.  Slash features on both tracks.  From there we were into some Gospel music from Stryper and some not gospel music from Mötley Crüe.  There was a bit of early '80s stuff then we went to Seattle to check out solo work from Stone Gossard and Jerry Cantrell of Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains respectively. One of the show highlights for me was a 3 song bit featuring SA bands spanning nearly 40 years.  We went from a new band in Cape Town called Image&Nation with a track called 'Rivers and Dreams' back to the mid-'80s and a recording I have of The Diamond Dogs, to AKing out of Bellville featuring half of Fokofpolisiekar.  We also checked out the power of Dean Smith, an ex-South African responsible for pioneering some serious SA Metal, and his new album released as Deangersmith.  The album is called Lead Us to Your Taker (Disarm the Corrupt) and the track was called 'Buckle My Shoe'. In the last hour we got heavy with Hatebreed and Testament then commercial with Nickelback and Bon Jovi ( yes I said the N-word), and played out with some classic ACDC, Judas Priest, and show closer 'Gypsy Lee Rose' from Brody Dalle's outfit The Distillers.  I Ran out of time as usual.  I was so busy I totally forgot to play the new Guns 'n' Roses track, which tells you something about a few things.  Artists featured: Adrenaline Mob, Alice Cooper, Slash's Snakepit, Stryper, Triumph, Texas Hippie Coalition, Black Star Riders, Sebastian Bach, Mötley Crüe, Stone Gossard, Jerry Cantrell, Biters, Kid Rock, Frank Marino, Rory Gallagher, Rival Sons, Black Stone Cherry, Dangerous Toys, My Chemical Romance, Seether, Image&Nation, The Diamond Dogs, AKing, Deangersmith, Testament, Hatebreed, Serj Tankian, The Stranglers, Queensrÿche, ACDC, The LA Maybe, Nickelback, Bon Jovi, Judas Priest, The Distillers.

This has been quite a palaver to get this episode out, after two days of wifi problems I finally managed to get it out so apologies for that.  Episode 38 of season 4 aired on 23 Sept 2021 at 19h00 on rebel Rock Radio.  It was quite different due to the unusual amount of South African music from unsigned acts.  We kicked off with The Clash by accident when Thin Lizzy 'Suicide' didn't load and I had to act fast with 'Clash City Rockers'.  From there on it was an hour of classic rock with Motörhead, Ozzy, Van Halen, Bowie, AX7 and Rammstein.I spent a bit of time discussing how Dan Patlansky is not only one of the most talented guitarists on the planet but has also contributed to SA music more than most through his guitar clinics which have inspired many amateurs to get stuck in and start getting their music out there.  Two such artists, Roan Ash and Roland Suttie are examples of this and were featured next.  We also took a listen to Dean Smith and his track 'Freedom Fighter' under the Deanangersmith monicker.  Dean is a SA Metal legend having been a mainstay of bands such as Odyssey, Ragnärok, Brothering, and Mouthful of Flies, he is absolutely prolific and deserves more recognition.  He also doesn't give a fuck what you think and that is what makes him so endearing :-)  We checked out another track from Mark Biagio and The Fismits and then got stuck into the brand new Stranglers album called Dark Matters.  I was extremely complimentary and made it clear once again just how much I love The Stranglers.  We did a bit of anger management with Fokofpolisiekar 'Angs Aanval' and Hatebreed with Black Flags 'Thirsty and Miserable.  All in all, it was one of my most enjoyable shows.  Hope you dig it.    Artists featured:  The Clash, Thin Lizzy, Mason Hill, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Blue Öyster Cult, David Bowie Motörhead, Night Ranger, Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen, Avenged Sevenfold, Tyr, Deanangersmith, The Fismits, the Pretty Reckless, Samantha Fish, Dan Patlansky, Roan Ash, Roland Suttie, ACDC, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Cinderella, Bon Jovi, California Breed, Gojira, Marilyn Manson, The Stranglers, Seether, Dirty Honey, Airbourne, Fokofpolisiekar, Hatebreed, Mark Knopfler, Foo Fighters, The Gaslight Anthem, Billy Joe Armstrong

Episode 34 of Season 4 went live on Rebel Rock Radio on 26 August 2021.  It was a great episode, one of my favorites, mainly because there is so much going on in life and with Rebel Rock Radio that I didn't even have time to think about this show.  The station is growing and we have some seriously good shows being added to the line-up.  Ep 34 flowed because of the number of new bands I have been listening too and the sad passing of Charlie Watts.  The amount of love being handed out on social media for the passing of this rock star is unprecedented.  I played a few Rolling stones songs that really highlighted his drumming and helped to make the point about how Charlie was always in the pocket and very much the backbone of The Stones.  I had a number of bands that, while not new to the world, were new to me.  These included The L.A. Maybe and a South African band out of Cape Town called Imagine&Nation.  There were new releases from Iron Maiden and KK's Priest.  I spiced the show with Killswitch Engage, Gojira, & Annihilator and we covered the Punky / New Wave stuff with Green Day, Titus Andronicus & Talking Heads.  It was great to hear 'Burning Down the House Again'.  We had more Chrome Division and more Greta Van Fleet. The usual heavyweights, Guns'n' Roses, Joe Bonamassa, Kid Rock, Dio, and Motörhead were featured.  I found a Motörhead song I had never heard called ' God Was Never on Your Side', I do not know how I missed the album, Kiss of Death.  The track actually reminds me of The Kinks 'I'm Not Like Everybody Else' which you can find on the website www.thestoryofrockandroll.com.  It is on the blog page and features an incredibly powerful video from The Sopranos.  The show closed out with a final goodbye to Charlie Watts and a few tracks that help us to realise that we are living the times discussed on page 185 of The Story of Rock and Roll.  "These heroes may die but their music lives on".  Artists featured:  Guns 'n' Roses, Kid Rock, Kris Barras Band, Dokken, The L.A. Maybe, Annihilator, Myles Kennedy, Edguy, Grateful Dead, Billy Talent, Alice In Chains, Killswitch Engage, Dio, Royal Blood, The Raven Age, The Rolling Stones, Greta Van Fleet, Kadaver, Image&Nation, Chrome Division, Iron Maiden, KK's Priest, Green day, Titus Andronicus, Talking Heads, Joe Bonamassa, Rory Gallagher, Pebbleman, Piet Botha and Jack Hammer, Nine Inch Nails, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers,  Hinder, Gojira, Motorhead, Linkin Park, Fokofpolisiekar.

To say that being in South Africa right now is difficult is an understatement.  The continuous load shedding is playing havoc (hammock :-)) with the broadcasts, you never know when you are going to get cut off or if the cell towers are going to work.  Episode 23 of Season 4 went out on 10 June at 7 pm, load shedding kicked in one minute after the show ended, score one for Rock and Roll.We started with W.A.S.P.  and ' The Invisible Boy' off their masterpiece, The Crimson Idol. Next, it was the turn of Great White off their '91 album hooked and I highlighted just what a great year 1991 was for new releases.  The show was light on both Australian and South African artists, with only Cold Chisel, ACDC, and Fokofpolisiekar getting a slot this week, I will put in some extra SA next week.  Cold Chisel's 'Yakuza Girls' off The last Wave of Summer went down very well.  We checked out Die Toten Hosen with 'Liebeslied' which just made it impossible no to follow up with The Damned and 'Love Song'.   Once again The Doors sounded amazing and clearly, I need to play a bit more of them.  Amazing to think Jim Morrison only made it to 27, so young, imagine what he would be putting out these days.  Other than that Halford was great and so was Kid Rock, in fact, everything was good, just as it should be.  Check it out, i am sure you will find something in here.  Artists featured: W.A.S.P., Great White, Soil, Cold Chisel, ACDC, Jorn, Overkill, David Lee Roth, Chickenfoot, Rammstein, Filter, Billy Idol, The Cult, Ivan Ivankovic, The Doors, Pearl Jam, System of a Down, Kiss, Guns 'n' Roses, Accept, The Stranglers, Die Toten Hosen, The Damned, Halford, Dio, Kid Rock, John Mellencamp, Red Dragon Cartel, Mammoth WVH, My Chemical Romance, Staind, Testament, The Horrible Crowes, Halestorm, Foo Fighters, Fokofpolisiekar.

Episode 22 of season 4 was recorded at 7 pm on 3 June 2021.  It did not air due to the collapsing infrastructure in South Africa.  A continuous spate of load shedding, almost 12 hours in my area , in the last 24 hours has led to the cell phone tower batteries running down and thus no internet to send out the show.  Fortunately, the podcast is here to make sure that you get your weekly dose of music that matters.  The show kicked off with Axel Rudi Pell and a track called 'Gunfire'.  We followed with Black Sabbath and  'Tomorrow's Dream' which at the moment is looking like a nightmare.  It is very easy to go off on a tirade about this so I will resist but just know that as relaxed as the show may sound I am in a constant war with wifi throughout.  I even set up a whole separate router system during the show which didn't work either.I played Beatallica which is a very odd mash-up of The Beatles and Metallica, it sounds ridiculous I know but just listen to it, the guy has Hetfield down to a T.  I played another Sinner track off There Will  Be Execution, really enjoying the band, I paid tribute to the amazing Francois Van Coke and celebrated his fantastic victory over rugby star Derick Hougaat last Saturday.  Rock gave rugby a lekker klap, we took a listen to Fokofpolisiekar with 'Tygerberg Vliegtuig' to celebrate.  Then it was time for some UK punk in the form of the Sex Pistols with 'Holidays in the Sun' and The Clash.  Another notable mention was that it's 10 years to the day that I was in Germany for Rock Im Park.  We took a listen to Avenged Sevenfold and Bring Me The Horizon to mark that momentous event.  It's 2 years since Piet Botha passed and I played 'Die Gemmerbroodman' and told you a little bit about who I had been told that song is about.  Incidentally on my iTunes copy of Die Mamba Piet Botha is called 'Pie Botha' so if you are living in another country and have the album, his name was Piet........not Pie.  I played the brand new Buckcherry called 'Hellbound' and I went on yet another big gushy rave about Sunken State.  It has been a long time since I have been as excited about a band as I am with SA's own Sunken State.  The album gets released on 11 June.   We wound up with The Parlotones and 'Disappear Without a Trace'  because that is how the future in SA feels right now and we said happy birthday to Charlie Watts by playing 'Street Fighting Man' and closed out by continuing the love affair with Brody Dalle and The Distillers with a track called 'Seneca Falls'.  Adios amoebas, check you next week.    Artists featured:  Axel Rudi-Pell, Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains, Bush, Keel, Seether, Sinner, Ratt, The Winery Dogs, 12th Avenue, Rammstein, Type O Negative, ACDC, Aerosmith, Beatallica, Machine Head, The Band, Matthew Goode Band, Fokofpolisiekar, Sex Pistols, the Clash, Piet Botha, ZZ Top, Avenged Sevenfold, Bring Me the Horizon, Hollywood Vampires, Buckcherry, Mark Morton, Greta Van Fleet, Halford, Iron Maiden, Sunken State, The Parlotones, The Rolling Stones, the Distillers.

Episode 8 of Season 4 aired at 7 pm on 25 Feb 2021.  I am very thankful to see the back of February, to be honest, it's been a really crap month.  I was on my last 24 hours of Covid quarantine and I find this shit really affects my mood.  This show was a good bit of medicine for anyone who is feeling a bit down.  We got straight into it with System of A Down and a wonderful cover of Sabbath'sSnowblind' and no it's not about the weather.  Next up we got into some ACDC and worked our way through some good up-tempo rock.  Ivan Ivankovic's demonstrated once again what a great guitarist he is,  The Dead Daisies took care of some new stuff, and then we went all the way back to '73 for a dose of The Rolling Stones off Goats Head Soup.  We took in some metal nice and early in the form of Parkway Drive and let The Clash and The Stranglers do the UK Punk honours.  Stevie Ray Vaughan made a rare appearance with 'Cold Shot'and it was fitting to follow Stevie with one of the only guys who can play Stevie like Stevie, South Africa's own Dan Patlansky.  I felt the need to stick the knife into Coca-Cola after this week's judgemental piece of wokeness and dedicated Fokofpolisiekars 'Vernietig Jouself' to them.  Other than that it was business as usual, with a nice little 3-play near the end featuring  Johnny Thunders, Asylum Kids & Matthew Good Band.  Artists featured:  System of a Down, Brides of Destruction, ACDC, Ivan Ivankovic, The Dead Daisies, The Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, Parkway Drive, The Clash, The Stranglers, Black Sabbath, Royal Blood, Megadeth, Dio, Accept, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dan Patlansky, The Gaslight Anthem, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Killswitch Engage, Those Damn Crows, Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, Van Halen, Airbourne, Austin Gold, Gov't Mule, Pearl Jam, Fokofpolisiekar, Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters, The Pretty Reckless, Johnny Thunders, Asylum Kids, Matthew Good Band, Arch Enemy, Michael Schenker Group, Live.

The final episode of season 3 went out fittingly at 7 pm on New Years eve, 31 Dec 2020.  It was a great episode, one of my all-time favourites.  I really enjoyed doing a review of the albums released this year.  The plan was to run through the albums and to throw in some rock classics like Guns ‘n' Roses with ‘Welcome to the Jungle', Rainbow with ‘Kill the King', and Def Leppard with 'Women'.  I didn't want to lose the audience with too much unknown stuff especially in view of the fact that there were some seriously good metal albums by Heathen, Annihilator, Testament, Onslaught, and Sepultura but by playing some classics I realised too late that there were way more albums than time so some albums did get short-changed as a result.    All of the albums featured in this episode have been played on TSORR through the year, I bought 46 albums released in 2020, and obviously, with a 3-hour show, I had to prune it quite drastically.  We got to hear some standout lesser-known artists; Catalano, Thundermother, Those Damn Crows, All Them Witches some excellent SA releases from Agro, Deadline, Fokofpolisiekar, and Johnathan Martin.  Johnathan's album Into the Nebulous Night is my favourite SA release of 2020 and I urge you to buy it.  I also paid tribute to some of those we lost this year; Eddie Van Halen, Leslie West, Dave Greenfield, Neil Peart, and Bob Kulick.  Overall, I reckon it's a pretty good summary of a year that was very good musically.Artists featured:  Guns ‘n' Roses, Catalano, Those Damn Crows, Biff Byford, Thundermother, ACDC, Ozzy Osbourne, Rush, Axel Rudi Pell, Dirty Shirley, Rainbow, Onslaught, Cirith Ungol, Vandenberg, Blue Öyster Cult, Philip Sayce, Joe Bonamassa, Agro, Deadline, Def Leppard, Paul Stanley, Heathen, Sepultura, Johnathan Martin, Piet Botha & Jack Hammer, Pirates of Radio, Bush, Seether, Marilyn Manson, Annihilator, All Them Witches, Bruce Springsteen, Fokofpolisiekar, The Stranglers, Van Halen, Mammoth WVH, Five Finger Death Punch & Leslie West

Episode 12 of Season 3 of The Story of Rock and Roll was fraught with trouble right out of the blocks.  It took place on a cold, wet, rainy night on 5 November 2020 and my microphone didn't work for the first hour.  It was the devil's job to figure this thing out and check and recheck all the sound settings.  In the end, there was no other option than to go off air and shut the whole system down, and start again.  Luckily the damned thing worked as it should after the reboot.  What we have here is a show that starts with 50 minutes of non-stop Rock and then like a phoenix rising from the ashes begins to take the form of a radio show after the re-boot.  I have edited out all the long silences where the mic wasn't working so in theory you may even go “What is he moaning about?”…... well now you've got the back story. The purely musical first third of the show featured amongst others, Judas Priest, Kadavar, Ted Nugent, The Rolling Stones and then a chilled Tom Petty doing ‘Turn This Car Around'.  Arapaho's 'Dump Truck' marks the point where the system is rebooted and after that, I have a microphone and can talk my usual kak.  Highlights of the second part of the show for me were Jo'burg Metal Masters Sunken State featuring the drumming of one Pete Pistorius ex of The Uninvited with a track called ‘Merchants of Time'.  Another highlight was a Joe Cockers version of Leonard Cohen's wonderful ‘First We Take Manhattan'. All in all, it was an extremely difficult show to deal with but, which turned out OK in the end.  South Africa was represented by Fokofpolisiekar, Aking, Sunken State, Arapaho & Dan Patlansky, Aussie by ACDC, and The Lazy's who are fast becoming a TSORR staple, Metal by Sunken State, Kreator and Slayer and the old guard by Alice Cooper and the Rolling Stones.   Anyway job done, catch you next week.   Artists featured:  The Rolling Stones, Fokofpolisiekar, Megadeth, Kadavar, Joe Cocker, Hell Fire, Rush, Santana, Kid Rock, My Chemical Romance, Stiff Little Fingers, ACDC, Dave Hause, Tom Petty, Sunken State, Last In Line, Thunder, Arapaho, Judas Priest, The Gaslight Anthem, Rory Gallagher, Black Veil Brides, Tin Machine, The Pretty Reckless, Ted Nugent, Hinder, Tesla, Halestorm, Pop Evil, Accept, Twisted Sister, Dan Patlansky, Slayer, Godsmack, Journey, Kreator, Therapy?, Aking and The Lazy's.

29 October 2020 at 7 pm was the date and time that Episode 11 of season 3 of The Story of Rock and Roll aired.   It was quite a show, unusually chatty and with only one little balls-up which I left in there in the interests of reality. Don't adjust your set after Iced Earth's 'Burning Times' it just takes me 30 seconds to twig that the mic wasn't on :-)  The joys of live radio.  It was a very lively show with plenty of people chatting on the Discord server and on Whatsapp.  We kicked off with 'Majestic' the traditional Journey opener but instead of more Journey, we cracked on with Metallica and Dio.  I started the local stuff early with another track off Johnathan Martin's amazing album Into The Nebulous Night.  Following up with Jack Hammer just made sense.  Punk happened in the form of The Stranglers and The Clash and there was plenty of classic metal and rock such as Iron maiden with 'The Trooper' and Judas priest with 'Hell Bent For Leather'.The highlight for me was Bruce Springsteen with 'If I Was the Priest', as I said he's not called The Boss for nothing.  We also learned how to pronounce Bonamassa and took a listen to a track off his new album called 'Royal Tea'.   All in all, it was good fun and we had a lot of laughs.  Oh P.S. if any of you eve read this I'd like to know because I am not sure if I am wasting my time :-)Artists featured:  Ozzy Osbourne, Journey, Metallica, Dio, The Cult, Social Distortion, Wolfmother, White Zombie, Johnathan Martin, Jack Hammer, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Audioslave, L.A. Season 3 Episode 9 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show aired at 7 pm on 15 October 2020.  It had a rocky start so be warned, the show opens with Van Halen and Dreams because I am still sad about Eddie, it is followed By ACDC, and then on the 3rd tack it goes soft for about a minute DO NOT crank up the volume because it comes back to full volume as soon as I realise the levels we not right.  After that everything is fine.  Start-up blues we call it.  We check out some Twisted Sister and some Volbeat and a couple of lesser-known bands like Austin Gold, Axel Rudi Pell, Bullets & Octane, and The Lazy's.  The Lazy's out of Aus are a great band, check them out.  I played another track off the Brendan O'Brien remix of Pearl Jam's Ten and it sounds fantastic, check out the guitars in that. The brand new EP from Fokofpolisiekar got an airing and it's great.  The highlight of the show for me was an old track by No Friends of Harry called Make My Day, requested but a listener who said it makes him want to down a warm Black Label quart and attack your neighbours with an empty bottle.  I understood the moment I played it :-).  There was a lot of good stuff on the show so best you just listen to it, but remember not to adjust for the low volume in the beginning.Artists featured:  Temple of the Dog, Hinder, The Rolling Stones, WASP, Twisted Sister, Judas Priest, Kiss, Axel Rudi Pell, Bullets & Octane, Volbeat, Mötley Crüe, Iron Maiden, Conil, The Uninvited, Marilyn Manson, Pearl Jam, Jerry Cantrel, ACDC, Great White, No Friends of Harry, The Cult, Joan Jett, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Austin Gold, Megadeth, The Anti-Nowhere League, The Temperance Movement, Phil Campbell, The Lazy''s, Herman Frank, Fokofpolisiekar, Rammstein, John Cougar, Backyard Babies  & Jet

Season 3 Episode 6 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show aired from behind the bar at 7 pm on 24 September 2020 on Rebel Rock Radio.  It was Heritage Day in South Africa and so there were numerous celebrations of many cultural traditions going on around the country.  My heritage is rock and metal from around the world so it was a great opportunity to celebrate a couple of bands that fed directly into this heritage, bands like Judas Priest, Nazareth, Led Zeppelin, Queen, ACDC, Boston, Van Halen, and Ozzy Osbourne.  We also heard from two SA bands that were very much a part of growing up in SA, The Radio Rats with 'ZX Dan', and 'Stingray With Better The Devil You Know'.  Technically this is the best show recorded since leaving Mix 93.8.  The microphone volume is finally at the right level and there were no glitches.  The show kicked off with 'The Black Parade' by My Chemical Romance and a bit of Airbourne.  The punk portion of the show was covered by The Sex Pistols, the Damned, and The Clash and for once we didn't have anything particularly heavy.  The highlight for me was playing 'Ow, My Tiny Heart' by Don Babylon.  It was used briefly on the TV series Billions but it's actually a 9-minute song which deserved an airing.  Kudos to Don for not bowing to pressure and shortening it for the sake of a killer chorus.  Thanks to everyone who tuned in and if you have any comments or questions find me on The Story of Rock and Roll Facebook page or on the website.  Artists featured:  Foo Fighters, Nazareth, Airbourne, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Junkyard, Ted Nugent, The Lazy's, Van Halen, Boston, My Chemical Romance, Pirates of Radio, The Radio Rats, Fokofpolisiekar, ACDC, Stingray, Linken Park, Gov't Mule, Ozzy Osbourne, Firehouse, Queen, Hinder, Don Babylon, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, The Burning, Kid Rock, Black Bone Nation, Saxon, Buckcherry, Michael Schenker Group, Tony Carey, System of a Down, Junkyard, The Sex Pistols, Adrenaline Mob, The Clash, Ryan Adams and The Clash.

Its a brand new Season, welcome to Season 3 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  It marks the brand new chapter where I left the radio station and together with 3 other presenters from Mix FM started our very own Rebel Rock Radio.  Its a steaming site and TSORR is now excluse to Rebel Rock Radio every Thursday from 7 pm until 10 pm.  There are obvious advantages here, firstly you get an extra hour, secondly I am part of a really good team, thirdly I have pretty much no restrictions on what I say or play.  My commitment is to bring you the best music in the world and to fly the rock and metal flag until the day I die.The show starts in the middle of Judas Priest with Saints in Hell, there is no Dr Who intro and the opening track Swamp Devil by Circus of Power didn't make the recording.  It's done from home with a brand new set-up including new headphones and mic.  The mic is still not right but its close now, bear with me, you are here for the music anyway I am sure.  Don't adjust your set when there are one or two minor silences while I adjust to the new desk.  I can't control the end of the show, if I finish early its silence if I run over it cuts me at 10 sharp.  Apologies to The Rolling Stones who were the first victims of that.  There was a lot of good stuff on the show Black Sabbath back to back with Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen back to back with Chickenfoot, lots of that sort of thing.  We had Seether and Mott the Hoople, some Death Angel and some Ugly Kid Joe.  Anyway check it out, it marks the beginning of an exciting time.  System of a Down with Violent Pornograpy was another good one to hear.  Artists featured:  Mott The Hoople, Seether, Death Angel, Judas Priest, Hell Yeah, Ozzy Osbourne, Sheryl Crow, Charlie Sexton, Skid Row, Desolation Angel, Leslie West, Dirty Honey, The Stranglers, Guns 'n' Roses, Black Sabbath, Pirates of Radio, Foo Fighters, Red Dragon Cartel, Fokofpolisiekar, The Offspring, The Wildhearts, Van Halen, Palaye Royale, Cold Chisel, Stiff Little Fingers, Dirty Shirley, The Defiants, Government Car, Deadline, Chickenfoot, Damn Yankees, Anti-Flag, System of a Down, Seether, Desolation Angels, The Gaslight Anthem, Ugly Kid Joe, The Rolling Stones

Recorded at behind the bar in Planet Rock on 31 July 2020 this is the 3rd episode away from the radio station.  Consequently, it has one of those little parental guidance stickers we used to use to look for to help us choose great records back in the '80s.  The sound problems are pretty much sorted out, the only niggle is that the mic seems to have a small delay before the volume settles.  I am not worrying too much, I am sure you are here for the music, not the chatter. This week we had a mixed bag of rock, metal, ballads and blues.  We kicked off with Def Leppard's Demolition Man and then followed up with the Dead Daisies, Doug Aldrich's latest home.  Other amazing guitarists to be found on the show include Jason Hook, Rory Gallagher, Lt. Joe Satriani, Tony Iommi, Mathius Jabs, and Ace Frehley.  We let Anti-Flag and the Ramones take care of the punk.  The SA music was supplied once again by Fokofpolisiekar and then also by The Burning.  the third local track was the highlight of the show for me.  It's a track called Porsche Roller, a one-off demo featuring the voice of Jack King Lawless, the prodigious talents of Adam Thomas and the guitar work and songwriting of yours truly.  What's the point of having a podcast if you can't play your own shit :-) Check it out, let me know on TSORR Facebook page if you have any comments and check out the guitar work on Rock and Roll Angel.  I am finding that the absence of the live radio environment has a massive drawback in that it leads to overthinking.  I am committed to avoiding this pothole and just recording and releasing exactly as it happens.  Artists featured:  Rose Tattoo, Kreator, Kiss, Def Leppard, Rory Gallagher, Anti-Flag, The Winery Dogs, The Dead Daisies, Ramones, Iron Maiden, Joe Satriani, Rival Sons, Cold Chisel, Fire Horses, Fokofpolisiekar, Extreme, Thin Lizzy, Scorpions, Heaven & Hell, Halestorm, Motorhead, Buckcherry, Clutch, David Bowie, The Burning, The Four Horsemen, Accept, Five Finger Death Punch, TSORR, Rock Radio, Best show for rock

Well, this is something totally different.  You may or may now be aware that the Rockfest Radio shows on Mix FM have been shut down indefinitely due to Covid 19.  This is the first episode of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show to be recorded from my home studio or should I say bar.  It was a technical challenge of note but I have figured it out.  You may find some odd bits and pieces but it gets better as it goes along.  The big challenge is the volume balance.  Getting the voice to record at a similar level to the music is not easy at all.  And then there is the difficulty of not getting all the dogs barking, pots banging general noise that comes from doing this outside a state of the art studio.  Desperate times call for desperate measures indeed.  As I mention in the intro it does however mean that the show now gets a bit more sweary, a bit more political and a bit more opinionated, the song, however, remains the same.  Anyway see what you think. The show kicks off live with Joe Bonamassa and then we continue with Those Damn Crowes.  Tom Petty makes an appearance a bit later on and I play the Skid Row cover of Little Wing that I have been meaning to play for ages.  Check out those solo's at the end, man Dave and Scotty can wail.  It was great playing George Harris's band the Raven Age straight after his famous dad's band and it sure holds its own.  Quite a bit of SA stuff in the form of Agro and Deadline as well as TSORR stalwarts Fokofpolisiekar.  Santana sounded great, first time on the show and then all the usual stuff you've come to expect, Stranglers, scorpions, Airbourne, etc.  Playing Warren Zevon's 'My Shit's Fucked Up' was liberating. Anyway check it out, hopefully, it doesn't disappoint.  One thing for sure I miss the audience and the adrenaline of live radio.  Without the Whatsapp line and all the regulars tuning in its a bit different. Thanks, Covid, thanks a fucking lot.  :-(Artists featured :  Joe Bonamassa, Those Damn Crowes, Led Zeppelin, The Gaslight Anthem, Five Finger Death Punch, Santana, Scorpions, Black Label Society, Queensryche, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, The Raven Age, The Offspring, The Stranglers, Skid Row, Greta Van Fleet, Agro, Deadline, Tom Petty, Papa Roach, Tom Petty, Asking Alexandria, Blackberry Smoke, Foo Fighters, Pop Evil, In Flames, Airbourne, Warren Zevon

Season 2, Episode 13 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show took place at midnight on 3 July 2020.  It kicked off with the stated intent of getting this place Hotter Than Hell.  I think we succeeded but you will have to be the judge.  Metallica set a blistering pace with a live version of Hit the Lights off Hard-Wired to Self-Destruct.  It was pretty much all fast, driving, rock and roll through until we took a brief Punk break with The Jam and The Stranglers.  I say Punk lightly because both bands are prisoners of the genre rather than true examples of the idiosyncrasies of Punk.  That being said it set us up nicely for 11 minutes of Judas Priest featuring Richie Faulkner's guitar solo at Wacken in 2016. As shows go this one had a pretty good mix of everything, we went back to 1967 for some Jimi Hendrix and also checked out what Leslie West sounded like in Mountain back in 1971 with Nantucket Sleighride, an often neglected rock classic.  There was a nice little bit of nostalgia with The Quireboys and The Dogs D'Amour and the idea of preparing for TSORR 30 years ago.  ACDC and Jimmy Barnes took care of the Australian music and Blue Scream and Fokofpolisiekar did the honours for local content.  Pop Evil made their TSORR debut with an awesome track called 100 in a 55 and then we were into the dying 15 min leading up to what I considered to be the highlight of the show i.e. playing you the track that I have been addicted to throughout lockdown, Killswitch Engage with Bite the Hand That Feeds.  I didn't dedicate it to Jackson, my beloved Border Collie but I could well have J  Artists featured:  Blue Scream, Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Axel Rudi Pell, Red Dragon Cartel, Fokofpolisiekar, The Stranglers, Mountain, the Jam, ACDC, Pop Evil, The Quireboys, Jimmy Barnes, Black Label Society, Q5, Rainbow, Black Veil Brides, Killswitch Engage, Jimi Hendrix, Mötley Crüe, Billy Squier, Sixx A.M., Judas Priest, Texas Hippie Coalition, The Dogs D'Amour, Metallica.

Season 2 Episode 4 played out at midnight on 24 January 2020 and it was great fun and pretty much seamless.  The show kicked off with Queensrÿche and ‘Spreading the Disease' and then straight into Dio with The King of Rock ‘n' Roll.  From there it was balls to the wall through until 2 am.  The Black Cat Bones and Fokofpolisiekar took care of the South African music, ACDC did the honours for Aussie, Accept represented Germany, Pink Floyd, and Billy Bragg were some of those from the UK, the USA was well represented as always and the colours were represented by Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.     We took a listen to a new-ish band called 3Teeth who are making waves at the moment, see what you think, I find it Marilyn Manson-ish.  After that is was the turn of a band formed in California in around 2007 called White Wizzard, the audience loved it.  It was definitely a highlight of the show, check it out, the track was called Storm the Shores and the guitar work is great.  Seether as always can be relied on to keep the show on track and then we had two tracks perfectly demonstrating one of the things TSORR radio Show is known for, notifiable guitar.  Adrenaline Mob with Mike Orlando showing us how to solo and then straight after that, no stranger to the show, Animal Bites, Dino Jelusic's band with a proper cover version of Roxette's ‘The Look'.  Dino's voice is as always off the scale good and I'm not sure who is on guitar but he is all over this.   The Rolling Stones ably represented the bands formed in the '60s and then it was time for something new on the show.  If you listen regularly you will have picked up that I am of the Van Halen school of thought i.e. that songs between 2 and 4 minutes are perfect.  Alex Van Halen once said they don't plan it that way, that's just how long it takes to say what you gotta say and move onto the next one.  This means that we are missing out on some good stuff so to remedy that I decided to play one 7 min or longer song per week.  The first of these was a track called A Little Piece of Heaven by Avenged Sevenfold.  I am happy to say the WhatsApp line loved it.  Carry the Cross by Arch Enemy was exquisite, such power.     Artists featured this week included:  Pink Floyd, ACDC, Billy Bragg, Joe Bonamassa, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Fokofpolisiekar, Queensrÿche, Bruce Springsteen, Dio, Avenged Sevenfold, Accept, Green Day, Windowpane, White Wizzard, Five Finger Death Punch, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Live, Arch Enemy, The Black Cat Bones, Animal Bites,  Seether, 3Teeth, Adrenaline Mob & The Rolling Stones, From: James Daubeney

Season 2 Episode 3 went out live at midnight 17 Jan 2020.  The show started with a bit of The Offspring before the traditional Dr Who start-up theme that signals arrival of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  That was just a bit of fun to keep you on your toes, otherwise, it was pretty much a textbook show.  One thing I suggest you do when you listen to the show is Google the lyrics, it's fascinating to see how good they are on so many of these songs.  In the old days you had the lyrics on the album cover, probably why the generation growing up through the '60s, '70s and '80s know all the words to everything,  but actually we are better off now where you can get lyrics for everything while you listen.   The show kicked off with The Sweet's Teenage Rampage and then straight into the mighty Judas Priest.  It would have been remiss of me not to call out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fiasco for their latest travesty of justice so that was done pretty much straight away.  Motley Crue restarted again halfway through the song but you won't really notice because I clipped it out for your listening pleasure.  I do however speak about it, so in the words of one of my high school teachers, “And boys that is why”.  I don't normally edit the show but no-one wants to hear a song twice in a row with so much other good stuff to get to.  The highlight for me was the brutality of Sepultura into the smooth perfection of Gary Moore with Still Got the Blues.  It made me realize Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher would have been the most amazing twin guitar combo ever.  There were so many good moments on this show, ‘(White Man ) In Hammersmith Palais' from The Clash, ‘California Uber Alles' from ‘The Dead Kennedy's' as well as ‘Man in the Box' featuring some great guitar work from Jerry Cantrell.  These were just a few that spring to mind, the whole thing is good.  Finally let's not forget the sheer, power, aggression and rawness of Fokofpolisiekar in their hey-day with ‘Angs Aanval' was sublime.  And then, of course, we did need to pay our respects to the amazing Neil Peart, drummer and lyricist for Canada's greatest band Rush.  Neil sadly passed away on 7 January and we played Spirit of Radio to say cheers, RIP Mr. Neil Peart.   Artists featured included:  Pink Floyd, W.A.S.P, The Clash, Fokofpolisiekar, Stone Sour, Bush, The Sweet, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Mötley Crüe, Black Sabbath, UFO, Sepultura, Neil Young, Tesla, Def Leppard, Motörhead, ACDC, The Defiants, Marilyn Manson, Alice in Chains, Gary Moore, Desolation Angels, Rush, The Dead Kennedy's, Nazareth.

Episode 49 of The Sory of Rock and Roll Radio Show took to the air a few minutes past midnight on 20 Dec 2019.  It was the 2nd anniversary of the show even though the podcasts only started Q1 2019.  It was a nice opportunity to reflect on how far the show has come.  The maiden flight of TSORR was pretty rocky as I recall.  I was alone in the studio on air for the first time.  I got through it OK but I am eternally grateful there are no recordings of that show.  This episode includes a few tracks that I know for sure I played that night.  John Paul Young's Yesterday's Hero, The Boomtown Rats with Someones looking at you were definitely played.  Most of this episode is a continuation of the usual TSORR theme I didn't get all nostalgic, its 2 years not 10 ffs :-)The highlight of the show for me was Zakk Wylde's guitar solo on Darkest Hour which I mistakenly said was off Hangover Music Vol II, a BLS album, instead of Book of Shadows II.  It was too late to retract so if you noticed, so did I.  Yesterday's Hero also went down very well.  It is amazing how many people have the same or very similar memories of discovering this amazing music called Rock.  It is really why both The Story of rock and Roll book and show exist.  So many of us heard the same bands at various stages in our lives and it changed anything.  TSORR, as always, is a celebration of both this fact and the music.  The show intro was probably one of the greatest I have done, The Stranglers Live and then straight into Pantera with Drag the Waters.  This was not lost on people and the first WhatsApp in immediately said: " The Stranglers into Pantera, banging bro " !!!.  Anyway take a listen to the show, I hope you enjoy it and stick around for the next anniversary in 2020.Artists featured in Episode 49 include:  The Stranglers, Tank, Metalmorphosis, Queen, Nazareth, Billy Bragg, Newsted, Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, Def Leppard, Pantera, The Boomtown rats, Megadeth, scorpions, Fokofpolisiekar, Roan Ash, Accept, Metallica, Airbourne, Judas Priest, Zakk Wylde, Y&T, Nazareth, Hanoi Rocks & Scorpions.

Episode 44 was a real banger, plenty of good stuff happening on this one.  It went out live at midnight on 15 Nov 2019. The show kicked off with Rammstein and then a bit of ACDC and Van Halen.  Thanks to a great comment on the WhatsApp line the Roth vs. Hagar argument has been won, it's all about Eddie.   The highlight of the show was the reaction that new kids Equator got for a track off their debut EP called ‘No Mercy'.  Equator are 3 brothers ranging in age between 14 and 18 and they have a seriously good sound.  When it comes to rock bands people often say “They don't make ‘em like that anymore”  to which it can now be argued, “They just did”. The other highlight was W.A.S.P.'s nearly 8 min monster-piece Chainsaw Charlie.  It's probably the only example of lead chainsaw in existence.  I am very grateful to be able to play this music for you guys and the speakers in the Mix 93.8 studio are amazing, when Hanoi Rocks' ‘Don't You Ever Leave Me' blasted through it was like time stood still.  ‘Lions' by Dire Straits was also like cool water in a heatwave.  As always I ran out of time so it was the Big Goodbye until next week.       Artists featured included:  Rammstein, David Bowie, Van Halen, W.A.S.P., Venom, Equator, Fokofpolisiekar, 12th Avenue, Dire Straits, The Horrible Crowes, ACDC, Bruce Springsteen, The Lazy's, Tom Keifer, Black Label Society, Great White, aKing, Metallica, My Chemical Romance, Dokken, Stiff Little Fingers, The Burning, Slash, Therapy?, Tom Petty & Hanoi Rocks

Audiodacious — “It doesn't happen overnight” Francois van Coke goes by many descriptors. Front man of rock band Fokofpolisiekar. Coach on The Voice SA. Son of a preacher. An anarchist that lives in the suburbs (a translated verse from his latest track, Daarsy Boys). But once upon a time he was just a young boy from a suburb called Bellville who dreamed of becoming a rugby player. As much as his rugby dream may not have materialised, he’s realised a lot of other unexpected dreams along the way. He chats to Siv Ngesi about how fatherhood has made him less selfish, what change means to him -and to Afrikaans culture, and what made his mom finally accept his music after over a decade. Quotes from Francois van Coke interview with Siv Ngesi: • Playing in a band was not my parent’s ideal for me • We wanted to free ourselves of everything of our past • I’m definitely a better dad off the sauce than on the sauce • It took 13 years for my mom to get into my music • Being in a band is like being in a rugby team • The only thing I wanted to do was be a rugby player • The biggest thing I’ve learnt about change is that it’s possible • I want to be a good dad, be a good husband and make good music until I die • As long as Afrikaans is looking towards the future, things can change for the better • I want my daughter to see that I made people think. Episode 31 of The Story of rock and Roll was recorded in the Mix 93.8 FM studios in Midrand at midnight on 9 August 2019.  It was a joyous celebration of Women's Day and the fact that it's a long weekend.  It was also the first episode recorded in the revamped Studio A with a brand new desk.  What a pleasure.  It also marked a change in the recording process for the podcast.  My Apple Mac Book Pro died and has been replaced with a Dell / Microsoft system.  Again, what a pleasure.  The highlight of the show, certainly according to the Whatsapp line was Richard Pryor's Brand New Day, an instrumental blues monsterpiece.  I was also kaked out for mispronouncing Patlansky, thanks Paul, noted :-) It's good to have people who care enough to point these things out.  The weirdest / odd man out track was without a doubt Robert Palmers Clues which was a real jolt of nostalgia.  Machine Head were sent in to restore normality.  All  in all it was an eclectic mix of Rock, Metal, Ballads and Blues, a two hour education in high voltage rock and roll, and as mentioned, it was also Women's Day and the release day for the brand Slipknot album.  Ain't Life Grand m/Artists featured this week include:  Metallica, The Pretty Reckless, Pebbleman, The Four Horsemen, Machine Head, Def Leppard, Rainbow, Chickenfoot, Live, Thin Lizzy, Bruce Springsteen, Skid Row, Headpins, Arch Enemy, Paul Stanley, Joe Walsh, Fokofpolisiekar, Halestorm, Slade, W.A.S.P., Rammstein, Skid Row, ACDC, Robert Palmer & Tom Petty

Episode 18 of TSORR Radio Show went out live at midnight on 3 May 2019 from the Mix 93.8 FM studios in Midrand Johannesburg.  It was not a textbook start by any means.  I was in Studio B which I have never used before and consequently the usual hearty greeting over the Dr Who intro theme is not there and you only know you are listening to a Radio Show after the 3rd song.  There is also a quick splice between Volbeat and Airbourne because the podcast link shut down in the Middle of Rainbows Long Live Rock and Roll.  Those problems were resolved quickly and the rest of the show went smoothly.  The show as always provided an eclectic mix of Rock music including the biggest hard rock and metal bands in the world, spanning the last 53 years but also celebrating some of the unsung heroes who have written & performed some of the greatest songs you have never heard.  Bands featured this week include Volbeat, Airbourne, Jimi Hendrix, Montrose, Dan Patlansky, Audioslave, Arapaho, Quiet Riot, Therapy?, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Kreator, Rush, Tom Waits, Joe Satriani, Pearl Jam, Phil Rudd, Dave Hause, Fokofpolisiekar, Night Ranger, Motor Sister
