How to Effectively Grow an Email List

Monetization Nation Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 16, 2021 24:36

In today's episode, I'm joined by Brittany Bayley, and we're going to discuss the ins and outs of email marketing including how to grow our lists and the essential email sequences.   Brittany Bayley is an email marketing expert, coach, and copywriter who helps her clients monetize their email lists and create unstoppable marketing channels for their businesses. She has penned successful campaigns for some widely recognized brands such as Russell Brunson. She's the founder of the popular email template system Swipes That Sell. She focuses on making email marketing simple, so it's easy to stay consistent and get ongoing and sustainable results.    How to Effectively Grow a List   Here are a few strategies for growing our email list.   Focus on the Customer's Point of View   We can grow our list by thinking about things from the customer's perspective. We can ask questions about their perspective and what they are dealing with to attract them to our list. We can do things like low ticket offers, freebies, or other hooks to invite the ideal reader onto our list.   A lot of people come at it from, “What do I want to offer?” But they don't see great results from this kind of approach. If instead, we say, “Here's my person. What do they need from me?” our list is going to grow significantly faster because we're coming at it with them as our focus.   Paid Advertising   The same mindset will work with paid advertising, we just have to put some money behind it. We do need to be careful with trying to scale it and putting a bunch of money behind it before we've proven and tested it. We should test it organically to make sure it works before we start paid advertising.   To test this, Brittany recommends split testing one thing at a time. Generally, the three things we will be testing are the subject line, calls to action, and our story. When we do this we should be watching our open rates, our click rates, and our conversion rates to see how they change. Brittany personally uses ConvertKit to do this, but she said she thinks ActiveCampaign is great and she's heard great things about Mailgun.   Networking   Getting on other people's shows, or Facebook Lives, or having other people talk about us on their email lists is a great way to bring in traffic. Brittany was recently in a mastermind bundle called Digital Insiders and her list grew by about 1,500 people. They all got together and were sharing each other's audiences. “It's a really good way to jumpstart your list and to get some fresh people onto your list and then get that ball rolling,” Brittany said.   3 Essential Email Sequences   Here are three different email sequences we should implement and how to get a start on setting them up.   Nurture Sequences   Whenever someone gives us their email address, we should start with a nurture or onboarding sequence. This is an introduction to us and our brand. It should tell our audience about who we are as an expert or coach, and it will set the foundation for the rest of our relationship with that new subscriber.    Typically, this is a five-part series that will tell our story and set us up to coach them and give them some of our resources. Once we've done this sequence we can drop them into our main list.   “That's an example of a core sequence that every coach, every single online coach, should have. There [are] no exceptions. We all need a nurture sequence to onboard our customers, to onboard our new subscribers, to set ourselves up for success with every other aspect of the email list,” Brittany said.   Launch Sequences   Launch sequences introduce a new product or highlight a product we already have in existence that we haven't brought up for a while. This can be a 5-10 part email sequence saying, “Here's what it is, here's why I created it, here's how it's gonna serve you.”   Abandoned Cart Sequence   We can set up an abandoned cart sequence by having them enter their name and email address before they get to the order form. Then, if they do that but they don't complete the purchase, an abandoned cart sequence would remind them of their cart and ask them if something went wrong on our end. It's a great way to save some sales.   How do we set this up?   It can be overwhelming to try to figure all of this out and expensive to hire a copywriter to do it for us. Brittany offers a more affordable way to at least get a start on our email lists called Swipes That Sell. The product has templates for the core sequences and training to teach us how to infuse our stories into them so they don't look or sound like templates. Swipes That Sell is just $37 compared to the thousands of dollars an email copywriter will charge to set this up.   Brittany's Journey to Become an Email Marketing Expert   In college, Brittany studied journalism and wrote for the paper. She started writing more for herself, doing blogs. A woman came to her blog and told Brittany that she liked what she was writing; she asked if Brittany would ghostwrite for her. Brittany didn't know what that was, but she accepted the job, figuring out freelancing as she went.    Brittany wrote for her for years, and she did some of her landing pages, registration pages, and other pieces for her. She started getting referred more, finding herself in a place that wasn't corporate that she really enjoyed.    One day a client came to her, asking her to do her email campaigns. It was a great moment for Brittany because things started coming together. She could use what she'd been learning with freelance writing and one of her passions, psychology. She loved it, and from there she worked her way to exclusively doing emails for online coaches.   Her greatest home run was the opportunity to write a campaign for the Mastermind.com launch with Dean Graziozi, Tony Robbin, and Russell Brunson. She said it was one of the coolest experiences she's ever had to write the campaign and to see the sales coming in live.   Narrowing Your Niche   When I asked Brittany what the biggest failure or mistake of her career was, she said it was not being specific enough in her niche. She didn't specify what kind of emails she would be writing and for whom; she just said emails. She realized that emails for webinars and follow-up sequences for sales calls are significantly different from emails for infopreneurs.   “I made the mistake of assuming that just reaching into email marketing would make me an expert in all email marketing when really you have to know your industry,” Brittany said.    Narrowing our niche is one of the secrets to how we can become number one in the world at something. As we narrow it down, there are fewer people that are experts in something so specific, so we become the expert of a niche within a niche within a niche. When we do this, we can become one of the best people that our clients could possibly hire to do that and we're worth a lot more.   Long-Term vs Short-Term Monetization   Brittany said one of her favorite monetization strategies for email marketing is focusing on long-term and short-term monetization. For long-term monetization, we want to have strategies such as ongoing content going out, ongoing nurturing of our list, funnels that fire a couple of weeks after someone buys, etc.    But we can also monetize in the short term. We can do flash sales or if someone came through our funnel and didn't buy the bump or the OTO, we can say, “Hey, how are you liking this product? Here's something that you might have missed in the haste of buying this.”    These are a couple of easy ways to monetize long-term and short-term. We should always be leveraging our list to the max, not just focusing on one side or the other.   The Best Way to Provide Value   We need to make sure we are nurturing our list. Brittany said, “If all we're doing is . . . hopping in and doing these little sales, we're never going to nurture them. We're going to have a lot more unsubscribes. We're not going to build loyal customers or loyal brand credibility. We're just going to be those people who are hopping in when they need money.”   If we make sure we're consistently providing value to them and nurturing them, then when we do come back with a short term offer or short term sale, they're much more likely to realize that we're bringing that to them for the best interest because we've been investing in that relationship in the long-term.   “It all comes back to who you're talking to,” Brittany said. “Sometimes we get really over-complicated with how to nurture lists or how to do these things. It all comes back to . . . the person in your list. What can we do for them? When you come from that standpoint, all of the strategies, everything else, makes sense when you come from a place of, what do they need from me?”   We should be thinking about what we can do to improve their circumstances. What questions are running through their mind at night? What things are they coming up against based on current events? What is coming up for them that we can solve or answer? What resources do we have that you can give to them? It can be as simple as what they need and how we can fill that.   Owning Our Database   Brittany sees an increasing need to build our list, own our database of customers, and have a way to directly contact them. There is so much going on with social media, with algorithms, with changes to how we're able to relate to our customers, and with what we're able to stay in our ads. This isn't to say we shouldn't be on social media, but it is important to be able to have a direct-to-customer line in case something happens with social media that negatively impact our business.   This is an example of the tectonic shift of building a “skyscraper” on “land” we own. In this case, the skyscraper is our business and our customer database, and the land we own is our email list. If we don't own the land, someone could come in and disrupt things for us. However, if we do own it, we can control what goes on on it.   It is important to sell in a way that we can get their contact information and permission so we can build that relationship through our list. The long-term value of a business comes in the ability to have that list and continually be able to sell new products to that list.   “Until you have a list, you don't have a business.” - Russell Brunson   Key Takeaways   Thank you so much Brittany for sharing your stories and insights with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode:   Focusing on the customer's point of view will better attract them to our email lists. Before we do paid advertising, we should test it organically to make sure it works. We can grow our list through networking and leveraging other people's audiences. Everyone should have a nurture sequence to introduce customers to us and our brand. Abandoned cart sequences are a great way to save a sale. When choosing our path, we should narrow our niche, so we become an expert in that specific thing and increase our value. We should focus on both long-term and short-term monetization. The best way to provide value is to look at things from our customer's perspective and ask, “What do they need and how can I give it to them?” It is important to be able to control our connection with our customers and have a direct way to contact them.   Connect with Brittany   If you want to learn more about Brittany or connect with her, you can find her on LinkedIn, Instagram, or visit her website at BrittanyBayley.com.    Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer?   Please follow these channels to receive free digital monetization content:   Get a free Passion Marketing ebook and learn how to be a top priority of your ideal customers. Best Ways to Listen Most people don't do a very good job of listening to other people or even themselves. This podcast is about what best to do and not to do to become a better listener. These suggestions apply to conversations with friends, family, colleagues, and ourselves. It really is amazing how wonderful it is to be truly listened to when you're trying to get across how you're feeling or what you're doing. I talk about an exercise I did with a group of professionals who were blown away by what it felt like to be fully listened to by one other person. That's how we can also feel when we make the effort to listen to ourselves. Hope you listen well and enjoy!

PR is the Best Way to Get More Visibility For Your Business and to Control What Others Think, Say, and Feel about Your Business. Here's How to Successfully Pitch Your Story. About Michele Glogovac Michelle Glogovac is THE podcast matchmaker!   Not only is she the host of the My Simplified Life Podcast, but the Founder and CEO of The MSL Collective, a PR agency helping others get featured interviews on other podcasts and traditional media outlets.  As a podcast host and PR agent, she knows the ins and outs of how to successfully pitch your story and get more visibility to connect with a larger audience. Think About How to Be a Great Podcast Guest Before Thinking About How to Successfully Pitch Your Story Michelle is a previous guest on The Second Phase Podcast. In episode 53 Michelle shared tips on being a great guest and following podcast guest etiquette. As Michelle mentions again, the key to being a good guest is to remember to be authentic and that the interview isn't about you.  Yes, you have knowledge and information to share, but it isn't about you, it's about giving, that will land you the interview. It isn't about promoting your business or book it's about giving to the host and their audience. Michelle used the analogy of a dinner party to relate to how to successfully pitch your story. Your pitch is going to be the hostess gift. Then you are going to be a good guest, listen to episode 53 to learn how, and then you thank your host. Think about the fact you wouldn't go to a friend's home without a gift and it's the same concept when you are a guest on a podcast, bring the gift of your knowledge to share with the host and her/her listeners. Robyn reminded that a personal brand is what other people think say and feel about you. Similarly, when you pitch to be a guest on a podcast, you want to control the perception that the host will have of you when reading the pitch. The more you offer to give, the better the pitch will be received. How to Successfully Pitch Your Story - What Goes Into The Pitch During the first part of your pitch, make a human connection and share that you've listened to episodes of the show and how you relate. Show the host that you care about them and their audience. Really know who you are pitching to. Do not copy and paste a pitch from one person to another. Some items may be the same, for example, topics that you will speak to, but there must be an original, unique component for each pitch. Relate to the host what you've gotten out of their previous episodes, and tell them how they resonate with you. It's about building an authentic human connection. If you are wondering how to successfully pitch your story, take note that it's important to express that you genuinely want to be on their show and make it about them, not you. Include topics and tools that you are an expert on. Include features you've been on if you are a host of a show, etc., and hyperlink them. You don't want to give the host any additional work. Make it simple for them to find more information should they need it. Most hosts have jobs outside of their podcast so reviewing pitches takes time away from their jobs and the podcast so if you give them homework to do, they will say no, they don't have time to chase information about you. Don't pitch to a host who does the same work you do. Be sure that you do your homework and be very specific about what the host and their audience will learn and gain from you.  Include links to demonstrate why your topics are pertinent and how you are an expert. The Things a Successful Pitch Includes How to Successfully Pitch Your Story for a Podcast Guest Interview Relate to the host. Look at past episodes. Tell them why you liked it, how you related to it and why you felt connected to this show and this host. Don't just look at their show, look at their website and Instagram. Get to know the host and really get to know them. Make sure that the host is accepting guests or is it a solo show. Include some topics that you can speak to. Select three or four that are really applicable to this show. Always include a link to your website. If you are a podcast host, include a link to your show and include links to your most recent interviews on other podcasts. Include a brief bio, a few short sentences, and attach your one-sheet. Thank the host for the opportunity to pitch. Your follow-ups should be 2 to three weeks out and they should be very short. The final follow-up should state that this is the final time I am following up.  Yes, podcast hosts are planning, but it is much more relaxed and not time-sensitive like traditional media. How to Successfully Pitch Your Story to a Traditional Media Outlet This pitch is going to be very short, very brief, only 200 words. The pitch will not go into a lot of detail about you or your client. It has to relate to the journalist. Journalists are mostly on Twitter. Follow them and engage with them so that they will recognize you. Most online entrepreneurs are on Instagram. Let the journalist know that you've read their recent articles. These pitches must be relatable for current events. Plan ahead. You don't want to pitch for Father's Day a week before. When pitching a topic, provide research to show why the subject is relevant and why the journalist would want to cover the story. Provide stats and data and hyperlink them so that the journalist has all of the data at their fingertips. Follow up is 2 to 3 days because it is timely. How to Successfully Pitch Your Story for Help A Reporter Out (HARO) HARO is a great resource for finding opportunities to pitch. Reporters will post what they are looking for and a list will drop into your email inbox after you subscribe. The reporters will specify pertinent details, deadlines, and requirements. After reading the post, you simply click to respond to the reporter with your pitch.  Oftentimes, the quickest pitch seals the deal. Don't delay and pitch right away. Types of PR HARO is reactive PR. You are reacting to what someone else is looking for versus being proactive which is making a recommendation for the kind of news you want to share. A similar platform to HARO is Qwoted. You can only send 3 of your pitches per month for free and then you will be charged. Note that you do not send attachments with this type of pitch, you use hyperlinks to your one sheet. The pitch is brief. The journalist will vet the responses they get, and then come back with more questions. How to Successfully Pitch Your Story Using A One-Sheet A One-Sheet is also called a pitch or media kit. It should have everything important about you, everything you want the podcast host or journalist to know. A One-Sheet is branded to your business and should include hyperlinks. Things to include in a One-Sheet Full bio Logo Headshot Website All of the topics you are an expert on The cover art of all podcasts you've been featured on with hyperlinks to the episodes Logos and hyperlinks to any other outlet you've been featured on It's really everything there is about you in one spot with all of the links embedded so that the person can go anywhere to find out more about you. The one-sheet really showcases and highlights the key things about you. One-sheets should be updated on a regular basis as more interviews occur. It is forever revolving, keep it fresh. Michelle uses Canva to create her One Sheet template. Canva makes is easy to hyperlink the graphics included on the One Sheet. Additional Tips on How to Successfully Pitch Your Story  Engage with hosts that you eventually want to pitch to. Same thing with journalists. Retweet and share content. The key is to become recognizable by the host or journalists so that when you do pitch and show up in their inbox, they know who you are and are more likely to engage with you and say yes to your pitch. Be proactive and engage before you even start pitching. Using Twitter as a Resource to Successfully Pitch Your Story  Share and add a comment, create lists of who you want to engage with, use Twitter chats, there are so many options for sharing and engaging on Twitter. It is easier to grow a following on Twitter unlike Instagram, where people hem and haw about following others, or they follow and unfollow. Twitter now has Twitter Spaces which is like Clubhouse rooms. Learn More About Your Host, Robyn Graham, Click HERE. To learn about The Brand Marketing Insider by Robyn Graham, click HERE. Whitney is also host of The Real Estate Syndication Show podcast.$100m in 2020From Whitney:Whitney Sewell is a seasoned real estate investor, podcast host, philanthropist and founder of Life Bridge Capital.  Whitney has acquired 900 doors and $150 million in assets under management, and interviewed over 1000 experts on The Real Estate Syndication Show. Whitney was able to scale his business at a groundbreaking pace - starting from nothing in 2017 to now consistently raising over $10 million in a few hours.Episode Highlights:- Networking is key when starting out so that you can connect with people that are running the right programming and can bring you to the next level you're trying to get to.- Always have an advisor / mentor on your first few deals (especially your first deal) to help identify risk factors that you may be blind to such as overly trusting the seller, broker, or anyone else during your due diligence stage.- As you scale your business by adding more properties to your portfolio, you also need to scale your team.- Although acquisition fees and asset management fees can range from 2% to 4%, these fees are important in covering a large amount of costs that go into setting up legal entities. - Every property that Whitney invests in has an expense cash reserve of at least 6 to 9 months.- As a passive investor considering investing in a deal, one of the first things that's extremely important to ask is when the first distributions will be made. It is crucial to understand the general partner's business model for the deal. If the sponsor can't clearly answer questions on this topic, then the business plan may not hold water and you might need to consider investing in a different deal with a different sponsor.- Dual class structures split limited partner shares into class A and class B, where class A get a preferred 10% return for example, but no upside in the equity when the asset is sold, while class B receives a 7% to 8% preferred return, and receives 70% of the equity upside at the end of the deal.- One way to increase the value of a multifamily property beyond increasing rents and decreasing expenses is being creative like charging for pet fees, covered parking, and dedicated parking spots.Helpful Links:https://lifebridgecapital.com/Best Way to Contact Whitney:whitney@lifebridgecapital.comText Whitney at the number he gives out toward the end of the episode or email him or Mason asking for it.

The Best Way to Lower Your Seller's Price | Real Estate (LA 1524) Transcript: Steven Butala: Steve and Jill here. Jill DeWit: Hello. Steven Butala: Welcome to the Land Academy Show, Entertaining Land Investment Talk. I'm Steven Jack Butala. Jill DeWit: And I am Jill DeWit. Wait for it. Broadcasting from sunny Southern California. I had to say that. Can you see? Can you see? Steven Butala: Today, Jill and I talk about the best way to lower your sellers price. Jill DeWit: What? Steven Butala: I can't wait to. Jill DeWit: Why would we ever do this? Steven Butala: Hear how Jill does this also. Jill DeWit: What? I need to do it. How do I do it? We can help. We got this. I'll tell you why this happens too. Although, you probably know. Steven Butala: Before we get into it... Well, sometimes you send a letter out. The thing comes back and they say, "I got your letter and I do want to sell but this price doesn't work for me." Jill DeWit: No, no, no. I'm lowering their price of any one I offered them. Steven Butala: Whoa. Jill DeWit: Yeah. Hold on. Let me- Steven Butala: Yes. Set us up. Jill DeWit: Let me tell you what the show is really about today, babe. Jill DeWit: That's great. Steven Butala: You know what? Jill DeWit: That's awesome. Steven Butala: Before we get into it, let's take a question posted by one of our members on the landinvestors.com online community. It's free. And if you are already a member, join us on Discord. Jill DeWit: I thought you were saying, "If you work for your spouse, you understand what just happened." I work with, not for. Jill DeWit: All right. Bobby wrote, "Hello, to this fabulous community. And thank you again for taking the time to read this. One area I'm getting hung up on is checking counties against the listed to universal rule. This usually kicks out otherwise great counties as they pass all other tests. Except that one. I thought I understood it but can someone please explain, in your words, and the overall importance of this test so I can be sure that I'm applying the correct logic. Thanks so much." Jill DeWit: Go. Steven Butala: Here at Land Academy, we have what is called a red, green, yellow test when you choose a county to send mail or zip code. And before I send mail out, it has to pass these three tests. And one of them is the listed to universal rule, which means how many properties are listed for sale on the MLS against the universe of like-kind properties in that county or zip code. So, there might be 50 pieces of property that are listed for sale and 5,000 pieces of property that are in the universe of just vacant parcels in that county. And you want that number to be low. Jill DeWit: I like that number. Steven Butala: Yeah. Jill DeWit: 50 to 5,000, I can do. 1,000 to 5,000, not so great. Steven Butala: Or 5,000 to 5,000. Jill DeWit: Really bad. Steven Butala: San Bernardino County California is like that. So, you don't want to generally send mail. In general, you don't want to send mail to where there are just tons and tons of for-sale property. And this statistic is designed to point in the direction of, don't do that. Jill DeWit: This is such a common thing. I love it. When you do this Bobby and you do it, just get into it. Figure it out and when you're staring and please pull at least zip codes or counties or something lined up. Two or three of them are going to jump to the top. You're going to go, "Oh, I see it now." So, as you're starting the process, we all kind of question it like you are but hang in there. Jill DeWit: Thank you. Steven Butala: Today's topic: The best way to lower your sellers price. This is why you're listening. Jill DeWit: As I alluded to in the beginning, here's the setup. Steven Butala: I want to sit back and listen. Jill DeWit: Okay. This is fine. So, you picked a county. You did what Bobby said. You sent out your offers. You think you did a great job pricing your offers.

How to Destroy Your Debt Forever

When I explored topics for my first book more than 20 years ago, there was one that I couldn't ignore: Debt. I was compelled to write about how to avoid it and how to destroy it, becasue I'd personally experienced how creating debt holds you back and eliminating it sets you free. The result was Life or Debt. I've always believed debt is a cancer that destroys the financial fitness of far too many Americans. Sure, there's "good debt," like the kind used for an education, a home or maybe a business. But far too often, debt is what happens when desire meets easy credit. Result? Often, needless stress, derailed goals, ruined relationships and postponed retirements. That's why I've served on the board of credit counseling services and why I've been preaching debt-free living for decades. Unlike achieving massive wealth, achieving a debt-free life is within the means of most people, and getting there requires a few simple steps; not easy steps, perhaps, but simple. That's what this week's "Money!" podcast is about. We're going to talk about why it's important to avoid debt, the fastest methods to eliminate it, and how to stay debt-free for life. The douchebags of internet have done a hell of a job downplaying "Single Mommas." Well, if there is one thing we can both say with full certainty it's that THEY DON'T KNOW SHIT. How can we be so certain? Because we've BOTH been with single mothers from both a short-term dating perspective and a long-term perspective to the point where a life-long partnership was very close to becoming a reality. So we can be CERTAIN that the internet's perspective does NOT match the reality. But we have to keep it REAL with y'all... So we're going to answer all the questions you may be wondering; How did you honestly react when you first found out she had a kid? What attracted you in the first place? Did you feel any type of way about her “mom bod”? What honest challenges did you have dating a single mom? Did you ever have any issues or concerns about her baby daddy? What are the best things about dating a single mother? Is she someone that you, at one point, could've honestly seen yourself with as a life partner? What made you feel that way? What's the best way for a single mom to approach dating? ► Bonus Episode: Guy Best Friends, Baby Daddy Drama & The BEST Way to Ask "What Are We?" LOVE our Podcast? 5 Ways to Cash in on Real Estate

Which is the better investment; stocks or real estate? Due to the unique nature of real estate, an apples-to-apples comparison is tough to make. But speaking from 40+ years of personal experience, I'd say both are important components of a well-balanced investment mix. I've made great long-term money with both. Major difference: Stocks are easy to buy, sell and track. Real estate, on the other hand, has traditionally been anything but. When you hear someone talking about investing in real estate, you probably imagine a hapless landlord, cleaning, painting, mowing and praying that their tenant can come up with the rent next month. While that's not inaccurate -- I lived that version of the real estate investor in my younger days -- these days there are ways to invest in land and buildings that don't involve schlepping lawn mowers and paint cans. There are now real estate opportunities that don't require a boatload of cash, sweat equity or even much supervision. That's what this week's "Money!" podcast is about. We're going to talk about all the different ways to invest in real estate, both traditional and cutting edge. Want more information? This episode I explain the science of heating and cooling the body, a process called thermoregulation-- and how to apply that knowledge to significantly improve physical performance. I describe the three areas of our body that can remove heat (or bring heat into the body) faster than anywhere else, why that is so, and how proper cooling of these areas with specific protocols can allow people to perform 200-600% more volume and repetitions of resistance exercises at the same weight loads, or to run, cycle or swim significantly further. I also describe how to use directed cooling of so-called glabrous skin: the bottoms of feet, palms and face, to significantly enhance recovery times from exercise. Also, why the common practices of trying to heat up or cool the body via the torso or whole-body submersion in cold can be inefficient and/or dangerous-- and the better alternatives. Finally, I discuss the temperature-effects of caffeine, alcohol and anti-inflammatory compounds. The information in this episode is focused on mechanisms and tools for increasing athletic or exercise performance.   Thank you to our sponsors: InsideTracker - https://insidetracker.com/huberman Helix - https://helixsleep.com/huberman Theragun - https://theragun.com/huberman   Our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/andrewhuberman Supplements from Thorne: http://www.thorne.com/u/huberman Social: Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/hubermanlab Twitter - https://twitter.com/hubermanlab Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/hubermanlab   Timestamps: 00:00:00 Introduction 00:05:08 Physical Performance & Skill Learning 00:06:40 Optimal Learning Protocol (Recap): 4 Steps 00:08:31 Variables Impacting Physical Performance 00:10:00 Temperature Is the Dominant Variable 00:12:08 Understanding Mechanism Is Key 00:13:42 Heat: The Enemy of All Performance (& Why) 00:16:30 Blood Flow & Sweating & Piloerection 00:22:35 Heat Is What Limits Effort: Even If You Feel Fine/Motivated 00:25:29 Proper Cooling Can Double, Triple, Quadruple (Or More) Your Ability 00:26:42 Heat Induced Confusion & Death 00:30:02 The Three Body Parts Best For Heating & Cooling Your Whole Body 00:31:38 Face, Palms, Bottoms of Feet; Glabrous Skin 00:33:00 Arterio-Venous Anastamoses (AVAs) Are Super Cool(ing)! 00:37:15 Palmar Cooling Can Supercharge Your Athletic Performance 00:38:35 ATP, Pyruvate Kinase & Heat 00:40:55 Palmer Cooling Outperforms Anabolic Steroids Several-Fold 00:43:45 Increasing Endurance, Willpower & Persistence 00:46:33 Cardiac Drift, & Moving the ”I Quit” Point 00:50:44 Deliberate Heating: Myths and Better Protocols 00:53:20 Protocols For Self-Directed Cooling To Vastly Improve Performance 00:59:23 How To Use Cold To Recover Faster & More Thoroughly 01:02:05 Ice Baths & Cold Showers Can Prevent Training Progress: mTOR, etc. 01:06:29 Alcohol, Caffeine, NSAIDs: Their Temperature Effects Matter 01:09:44 Are Stimulants Counter Productive For Performance? Guest: Richard Pitino, University of New Mexico Head Coach In this week's coaching conversation, University of New Mexico head coach Richard Pitino joins the podcast to discuss coaching transitions and program building. Coach Pitinio is the head coach of the University of New Mexico. He has previously been head coach at Minnesota and at Florida International University. Before that, he was an assistant under his father Rick Pitino for two seasons at Louisville. He also worked as an assistant coach for Billy Donovan of Florida for two seasons. He has been a part of seven NCAA Tournaments, including two as a head coach. He has also been a part of three Elite Eight runs and one Final Four berth as an assistant. He comes to UNM after an eight-year stint at the University of Minnesota, where he went 141-123 with two NCAA Tournament berths and an NIT Championship. His first season at the helm of the Golden Gophers saw Minnesota go 25-13, setting a school record for wins as Minnesota won the second NIT Championship in school history. At Florida International, Pitino led the program to its first winning season in 12 years and a 10 win improvement from the previous year. Overall at Minnesota, Pitino picked up 19 wins over ranked opponents, including five top-10 opponents. Daniel Oturu in 2020 was selected in the second round of the NBA Draft by Minnesota, becoming the first Golden Gopher to be drafted into the NBA in 16 years. Additionally, five players were drafted into the NBA G League. Pitino’s success isn’t just as a head coach, as he has been a part of several deep NCAA Tournament runs as an assistant and as an associate head coach. He spent two separate stints at Louisville coaching alongside his Hall of Fame father Rick Pitino. In 2011-12 as associate head coach, the Cardinals went 30-10, advancing all the way to the Final Four. That team along the way scored a 59-56 win in Portland over New Mexico in the NCAA Tournament, paving the way for the Cardinals to make it to the Sweet 16. From there, Louisville defeated No. 5 Michigan State and No. 25 Florida before losing in the Final Four to No. 1 Kentucky. Between Louisville stops, Pitino spent two seasons at Florida coaching under Billy Donovan. In his first season with Florida, the Gators went 21-13 overall, making it to the NCAA Tournament as a 10-seed where they would lose 99-92 in double overtime to BYU. That team climbed as high as No. 10 in the polls. The following season in 2009-10, Florida won the SEC regular season championship and went 29-8 overall, advancing the Elite Eight, losing to a Cinderella Butler squad 74-71 in overtime. Pitino has also had assistant coaching stops at Duquesne, Northeastern and the College of Charleston.
