Podcast geluisterd? It's musicals month for November's theme and hitting up Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber again because it's time to go to church though we can't tell what denomination this is. It's pretty sweaty but there are some baddies hanging around. A little gay, to be expected, but the band is pretty sick. They're all the band. This is what Nazarenes wish their services were like. It's two thousand years ago by way of the 1970s in this rock opera retelling of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. We're jamming to Norman Jewison's 1973 film adaptation of “JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR” and it stars Ted Neeley (who crushes it) Carl Anderson (who steals the show) and Yvonne Elliman (who can get it). Then you got your Pauls, your Pharisees, your Herods and your Pilates and the timeless tale has never been told like this. We didn't know this at the time but Yvonne Elliman had some disco hits as well. She also hooked up with Eric Clapton but nobody's perfect. But anyway…Jesus. He's just a man, right? Why does he scare them so? Intro music: Samplefocus.comUsage: Standard licenseStory and Cover art by: Gail NoblesYou didn't think podcasting could have an AM radio sound, did you? Well, I suppose in this digital age, sound quality is king, but let's not forget the charm of those crackly, static-filled airwaves we grew up with. Ah, the golden days of radio! There's something about tuning in to your favorite station, praying that the signal comes in clear so you can enjoy the music without the distraction.Once a radio station ceases to exist, it's as if the very spirit of its history diappears. It's left like a whisper in the wind—only lingering in the minds of those who once tuned in. Take WHIT, for instance. There I was, a little girl in the 70s, listening to what felt like magic coming from a car radio as I enjoyed a ride. I have a notion that it was an AM station, broadcasting from somewhere that felt like a world away.I can almost hear the strains of Randy Newman's “Short People” floating through the air, mixed with the smooth vibe of Paul McCartney's “Silly Love Songs.” There was Charlie Dore crooning “Pilot of the Airwaves,” and Debbie Boone telling me, “You Light Up My Life.” How can I forget Melisa Manchester's “Don't Cry Out Loud,” or Candi Staton's “Run, Heart, Run Free”, and Yvonne Elliman's “If I Can't Have You.” Now, I don't know if I heard all these hits on WHIT specifically, but the memories are neatly tucked away with that station. And let's not overlook the charismatic Wolfman Jack—how could we forget the man who owned the airwaves? He spun records with the enthusiasm only a true radio DJ could muster.AM radio might have been fuzzier than a cat's fur, and the static could drive you nuts, but there was a certain warmth to those imperfect sounds. The music managed to shine through the noise, and that's what made it special. I didn't care about the interference; I was too busy lost in the melodies that carried my dreams.

Yvonne Elliman had it all, in her late teens and early 20s. Fresh out of Roosevelt High School (Class of 1969), she journeyed to London, where Andrew Lloyd Webber swiftly signed her to do the first commercially successful "concept" album, "Jesus Christ Superstar," in which she sang the role of Mary Magdalene. That was in the early '70s. The rock opera eventually became a hit Broadway show, then a popular film, and Elliman did both on her way to the big time. In the "talk story" session, Yvonne shares with host Kamaka Brown what her journey was like from living in Hawaii to being in the spot light with rock legends of the 70's and 80's.
On this special episode of On the Rocks, we get an intimate and lively chat with Grammy Winner and Golden Globe Nominee Yvonne Elliman as we chat about her career, becoming a chart-topping legend in the 70s, her time with the Bee Gees, Eric Clapton, & Bob Dylan, and her never heard before stories of her time in the rock-n-roll and disco era. We also talk about her being discovered in a bar by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice and becoming their Mary Magdalene for Jesus Christ Superstar for the concept album, the Broadway play, and the film directed by Norm Jewison, and the legacy of her one take recording of "I Don't Know How To Love Him." It's a full episode! With your sassy host with the sassy most, Alexander Rodriguez. Raise a glass, it's On the Rocks! From Straw Hut Media

It's finally here... Today, we turn to the Gospel According to Andrew Lloyd Webber: the phenomenon that is Jesus Christ Superstar (1970)! We talk about: – The context of the late 60s/early 70s that gave rise to a rock opera treatment of the Jesus story – The eroticism in Mary Magdalene's (and maybe Judas'?) relationship with Jesus and the question of how sexuality & love intersect in the Christian tradition. What does it mean to fall in love with a God with a human body? – Mary Magdalene (not a prostitute in the Bible!) and the way the musical treats her as a woman, a sex worker, and a romantic lead. – Anti-Judaism and Anti-Semitism in Jesus Christ Superstar and in the New Testament and what responsibility Christians bear in challenging it. – What kind of Christology (big fancy theological word for “understanding Jesus”) undergirds Jesus Christ Superstar, and whether there's any good news in this musical. You'll hear: – Ian Gillan, Murray Head, Yvonne Elliman and the cast of the Original Studio Recording (a.k.a. “The Brown Album”) from 1970. – "Could Ye Not Watch With Me One Hour?" from John Stainer's Crucifixion sung by the St. Michael Singers (Fox Records, 2009). – Joshua Mostel singing "Herod's Song" from the 1973 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Back in December 1977, a young actor named John Travolta (by then only known for his role as Vinnie Barbarino on the TV comedy "Welcome Back Kotter) strutted across the streets of New York to the funky beat of an English trio that reinvented themselves from Soft Rock gentlemen to the purveyors of the global Disco explosion. While The Bee Gees' music was the centerpiece of "Saturday Night Fever," the film's soundtrack gave a spotlight to notable pop performers like Yvonne Elliman, masterful musicians and arrangers like David Shire, Ralph McDonald, and R&B veterans like The Trammps and Tavares that were also heavily instrumental in creating the blueprint of Disco in the early 70s.Show Tracklisting:Jive Talkin' (Bee Gees)You Should Be Dancing (Bee Gees)I Don't Know How To Love Him (Yvonne Elliman)Love Me (Yvonne Elliman)How Deep Is Your Love (Bee Gees)If I Can't Have You (Yvonne Elliman)More Than A Woman (Bee Gees)More Than A Woman (Tavares)It Only Takes A Minute (Tavares)Boogie Shoes (KC & The Sunshine Band)Open Sesame (Kook & The Gang)K-Jee (MFSB)A Fifth Of Beethoven (Walter Murphy)Calypso Breakdown (Ralph McDonald)Night on Disco Mountain (David Shire)Zing! Let's face it; things didn't come easy in the 70's. People spent a lot of time searching the want ads and it was hard not to feel down on a Monday when you couldn't find anything in there. Relationships were strained when he loved her madly, but she didn't know how to love him, and yet both realized they never can say goodbye. The drumbeat of bad news made a lot of people turn toward the heavens and say “for god's sake if there were only some way to bring more power to the people”. Some people ignored the bad news, drank their cool aid, had brown sugar and marmalade on their toast, while others were looking for a superstar who would offer their hand and lead them to a bridge over the troubled water. Someone to tell them that it's not too late, that perhaps the way to bring back joy to the world was right on the tip of their tongue. I humbly ask you to stay awhile and indulge in this week's podcast where we take a look at the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending June 5, 1971. We've got funk, soul, religion, stories, and alternate sources of food. We promise to be respectful of the chart and treat her like a lady. 00h 00'00" Inicio 00h 01'06" Cabecera 00h 01'44" ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER 00h 03'58" Close every door - Philip Schoffield 00h 06'56" Any dream will do - Jason Donovan 00h 10'43" Heaven on their minds - Josh Young 00h 14'23" I don't know how to love him - Yvonne Elliman & Ian Gillan 00h 18'30" Gethsemane - Ian Gillan 00h 24'02" Oh what a circus - David Essex 00h 27'47" Another suitcase in another hall - Barbara Dickson 00h 30'45" Don't cry for me, Argentina - Elaine Paige 00h 36'32" BLONDEL y CHESS 00h 37'05" The least of my troubles - Paul Nicholas 00h 40'59" Running back for more - Elaine Paige 00h 44'06" One night in Bangkok - Murray Head 00h 49'02· I know him so well - Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson 00h 53'12" Someone else's story - Elaine Paige 00h 56'53" CRICKET y HEATHCLIFF 00h 58'19" The summer game - The London Quartet 01h 01'47" A misunderstood man - Cliff Richard 01h 06'16" Had to be - Cliff Richard & Olivia Newton John 01h 10'23" Be with me always - Cliff Richard & Olivia Newton John 01h 15'25" THE LION KING y KING DAVID 01h 16'52" Circle of life - Carmen Twilie 01h 20'47" Hakuna Matata - Nathan Lane y Ernie Sabella 01h 24'49" Can you feel the love tonight - Elton John 01h 28'45" Sheer perfection - Marcus Lovett & Judy Khun 01h 33'03" Saul has stain his thousands - Stephen Bogardus & Chorus 01h 36'41" This new Jerusalem - Marcus Lovett & Anbthony Galde 01h 40'54" MÁS ELTON JOHN 01h 41'37" Every story is a love story - Sherie Rene Scott 01h 44'57" Fortune favors the brave - Adam Pascal & Cast 01h 47'10" Elaborate lives - Adam Pascal & Heather Headley 01h 51'29" Written in the stars - Adam Pascal & Heather Headley 01h 55'37" The panic in me - Elton John 02h 01'02" It's thought to be a God - Elton John & Randy Newman 02h 04'44" My heart dances - Elton John 02h 09'29" PRINCIPIO Y FINAL 02h 10'36" A man on his own - Adam Brazier 02h 14'50" Going, going, gone - Tim Rice 02h 19'15" G Company Blues - Ensemble 02h 22'39" Fight the fight - Robert Londsdale & Ensemble 02h 25'08" More than America - Darius Campbell & Rebecca Thornhill
Joanna Parson and Lance Werth talk with Jack Cummings III, Obie-winning Artistic Director of off-Broadway's Transport Group, about listening to Helen Reddy's music in the '70s and beyond. In this episode we hone in on the first song in "Reddy or Not: A Musical Comedy Tribute to Helen Reddy," "I Don't Know How to Love Him". We talk Jesus Christ Superstar, Yvonne Elliman, and the great movement in female vocals that inspired us then and now. We also work hard to uncover the most insipid lyrics from the era (NEVER Helen's), and chat about what makes a great theater song, as opposed to cabaret or pop. Music by Barbara Anselmi.
00h 00'00" I don't know know to love him 00h 03'43" Presentación 00h 06'19" Cabecera 00h 07'27" Inicio 00h 08'49" Overture (arreglo Teddy Bautista) 00h 13'21" Heaven on their minds - Murray Head 00h 18'26" What's the buzz - Steve Balsamo & Joanna Ampil 00h 20'48" Strange thing mystifying - Steve Balsamo & Zubin Varla 00h 22'55" The we are decided - Kurt Yaghjian & Bob Bingham 00h 25'54" Todo estará en paz - Angela Carrasco, Teddy Bautista & Camilo Sesto 00h 31'05" This Jesus must die - Kurt Yaghjian & Bob Bingham 00h 34'46" Hosanna - Bob Bingham & Ted Neeley 00h 37'56" Simon Zealotes - Larry T. On this episode of the MacGuffin Guild, we're going to witness the story of the last 6 days in the life of Jesus Christ... in Jesus Christ Superstar. This classic 1973 Rock Opera stars Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, Yvonne Elliman, Paul Thomas and Josh Mostel. Directed by Norman Jewison. We're gonna talk about the works of Norman Jewison, Rock Opera's vs. Musicals, this film's controversies, comparisons to The Passion of the Christ, and the game of "telephone" in human history. We'll dig into the intense talent of Carl Anderson, Justin and Pat's love for Steel Magnolias and real violence caught on film. We'll also dig into the fickle nature of humans, Paul Thomas as Peter -- in both THIS film as well as 388 adult films, odd human tendencies, the perception of Jesus in the film and the sexual appeal of an audio show.I'm Pat Dougherty and as always I'll be joined by my fellow MacGuffin's Justin Jones and Mike Antonio. Our theme song was written and performed by Jordan Vincent. First the stage show... then the film... now the podcast... Jesus Christ Superstar.

In 1969, SHEP GORDON founded Alive Enterprises, a personal management company and over the years, Gordon and Alive have been responsible for managing the careers of Alice Cooper, Groucho Marx, Raquel Welch, Anne Murray, Ben Vereen, Teddy Pendergrass, Stephanie Mills, Blondie, Manhattan Transfer, Burton Cummings, Yvonne Elliman, Midnight Star, George Clinton, Luther Vandross, Rick James, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Kenny Loggins, Gipsy Kings , the Pointer Sisters, and many more, who have sold a total of over 100 million albums worldwide. Gordon and Alive set many precedents in the music industry including the first television production of an album (Alice Cooper’s “Welcome to My Nightmare”), the first long form rock video produced for home release (Blondie’s “Eat to the Beat”), and one of the first concert television series (“Rock and Roll Tonight”), all of which inspired a new generation of music video and theatrical rock concert productions. In the mid 70’s, Alive ventured into the movie business where its first production Ridley Scott’s “The Duellists” won the Best Debut Film award at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival. After several studio productions, including “Roadie” and “Endangered Species,” Gordon co-founded with Chris Blackwell and Island Records, Island Alive and Alive Films, for the production of independent feature films. Their commitment to artistic freedom attracted influential filmmakers and has been responsible for the production and/or distribution of the Academy Award-winning “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” Academy Award-nominated “Betty Blue,” “Marlene” and “El Norte,” Lindsay Anderson’s “The Whales of August,” Alan Rudolph’s “Choose Me” and “The Moderns,” John Carpenter’s “Prince of Darkness,” “They Live and Village of the Damned,” Wes Craven’s “People Under the Stairs,” Sam Shepard’s “Silent Tongue,” as well as 40 other movies. In 1975, Alive expanded into the restaurant industry with the opening of its first restaurant, Carlos ’n Charlies, which became a Hollywood institution for 20 years and then in the late 1980’s, Alive partnered with Robert DeNiro to open Tribeca Grill in New York City. Alive’s restaurant business is still active having opened approximately 40 restaurants thus far, the most current being a founding partnership in Jean-Georges’ Spice Market in New York City. In the ‘90’s, Gordon’s started focusing on food as entertainment and chefs as entertainers, founding Alive Culinary Resources, which was designed to bridge the gap between the public and the world’s most sought-after chefs. From its inception, his client roster read like a who’s who of the culinary world, including legendary French Chef Roger Vergé, Alice Waters, Wolfgang Puck, Charlie Trotter, Emeril Lagasse, Dean Fearing, Nobu, Todd English, Charlie Palmer, Larry Forgione, Paul Prudhomme, Jimmy Schmidt, Stephen Pyles, Robert del Grande, Daniel Boulud, Michel Richard, and 100 more of today’s most famous chefs. Gordon was inducted into the Hawaii Culinary Hall of Fame and has also won numerous other industry awards, including being named one of the 100 most influential people in Rolling Stone magazine.

The latest episode of the podcast which asks: would you go to see Panties at Canning Town Bridge House?Unbelievably, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, this appears to be only the second time we’ve chanced across 1978 – which is a shameful way for a podcast about Top Of The Pops to act, because this year is rammed with cultural behemoths dominating the landscape, with the musk of all the things that Chart Music cherishes hanging thick in the air. We're right on on the perineum ‘twixt Saturday Night Fever and Grease, Tony Blackburn has just slid into his Tony Manero outfit, and your panel are a) becoming massively disillusioned by school dinners, b) fancying Carol Chell, and c) drawing a picture of Hitler in a Mexico strip and getting ready to ice down his groin with some peas a week from now.Musicwise, practically everything good – and bad – about ’78 is here. The Real Thing help Legs & Co recreate one of the scenes in The Stud that didn’t involve grubby pre-Eighventies Percy Filth. Jimmy Pursey says hello to Mum again. Yvonne Elliman and Tavares keep the SNF end up. Legs & Co – on their second shift – look as if they’ve been caught short or have had a serious wardrobe malfunction. Debbie Harry’s face splits like a spaceship door. Heatwave take jumper technology to the next level. ITV Quisling Cilla has a go at Disco. James Galway makes his first appearance since being run over by a motorbike in Switzerland. Ian Dury becomes the nation’s favourite Hard Bastard Uncle. The Scotland World Cup Squad have to sing around a disembodied cardboard cut-out of Rod Stewart. And the UK’s seventh biggest-selling single ever is Number One.Team ATVLand – Taylor Parkes and Neil Kulkarni – help Al Needham fill out the wallchart of late May 1978, veering off on such tangents as the thought of Dave Bartram giving Joan Collins one in a lift, a forensic examination of the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest, urban myths about Melody Maker editors being whipped by chains, an inter-Journo fight over who liked Dexys Midnight Runners more, and – finally – the recasting of Prisoner: Cell Block H that the Pop-Crazed Youngsters have been crying out for. OVER SIX HOURS, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, and rest assured that a considerable amount of that involves both Effing and Geoffing…Video Playlist | Subscribe | Facebook | Twitter | The Chart Music Wiki | Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

50 years ago the unknown pairing of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice recorded the first ever version of their rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. They had wanted to introduce the work on stage but no theatrical producers wanted to know. Thus forced to make a cast album before the show, they unintentionally discovered a new way to launch a musical theatre project, and created a work that was much more in tune with a younger audience than would otherwise have been the case. Tim chats about this and the management and record company teams that helped them get Superstar off the ground. The episode features Murray Head and Yvonne Elliman and even a failed combo entitled Tim Rice and the Webber Group. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Grant O’Brien shares his love for the original studio cast recording of Jesus Christ Superstar but stresses it’s not his favorite musical. It’s glorious, it’s weird and not a little problematic from time to time. He reveals the sexual confusion he had while in Catholic school and how he connected with his not-cool-enough-to-be-a-hippy father over musicals. Wait. Not cool enough? Grant’s Dad rode his bike with his twin brother all the way from Ohio to New York City to see the original Broadway production of JCS. That may not be “Hippy” but that is pretty cool! They talk about seeing musicals as a kid and how the best roles are the ones where you go out, steal the show and then go backstage to “have a jacuzzi.” Inevitably the discussion turns to favorite/least favorite musicals and then we get to....Cats. I mean what the hell is that musical about? These particular songs are ABBA’s “I Am The City” and Yvonne Elliman‘s “If I Can’t Have You.” Subscribe, Listen, Enjoy, Rate and Review!

Hosts Briana Phipps and Christian Bladt discuss the movie Jesus Christ Superstar. Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1973 American musical drama film directed by Norman Jewison and co-written by Jewison and Melvyn Bragg based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice rock opera of the same name. The film, starring Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, Yvonne Elliman, and Barry Dennen, centers on the conflict between Judas and Jesus during the week before the crucifixion of Jesus. Neeley and Anderson were nominated for two Golden Globe Awards in 1974 for their portrayals of Jesus and Judas, respectively. Although it attracted criticism from some religious groups, reviews for the film were positive. Join us as we rank every song on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, and gasp along as we discover that we radically disagree on certain disco classics. Stick around for a little feminist/queer theory, a little praise for Yvonne Elliman, and a LOT of lust for '70s-era Travolta and Andy Gibb.

Anthony Bourdain/ECCO will be releasing his newest book – “They Call Me Supermensch: A Backstage Pass To The Amazing World Of Film, Food, and Rock ’N’ Roll” in September of 2016.

It's been 42 years since the original cast and crew of the 1973 film Jesus Chris Superstar have all been in the same room together, and tonight (April 27), Director Norman Jewison, Ted Neeley (Jesus,) Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene,) Barry Dennen (Pontius Pilate,) and Josh Mostel (King Herod); to name a few, will reunite for a special screening at the Beekman theater in New York City. Getting the band back together so to speak would've happened much sooner for Ted whose boundless enthusiasm for what he calls his life-changing role has never left. He tells host Robin Milling, “I've been trying to get this reunion to happen since the film came out. I've been trying to get all of us together to do another production; if nothing else just to hang out for a few days. It's never happened until now. And the fact that we'll all be in the same place at the same time with Norman is a miracle!” Miracles have been known to happen in the life of Jesus Christ, but it almost didn't happen for Ted who reveals he almost missed out on being cast in the iconic role. He also tells Robin how he met his wife of over 40 years, Leeyan Granger on the set and how their two children have been happily following dad's adventures as a superstar. Most actors run from one role defining their legacy but Ted has embraced Jesus, still performing the role wherever and whenever he can; most recently touring Italy for a year. He says joyfully, “It completely changed my life, spiritually, personally. So why slap that in the face? And I still love it; every performance is like the first time all over again. That music starts to play and I just lift off the ground, 'ok take me wherever you want me to go!”
Growing up in Van Nuys, California, Marty Walsh hit his stride in music just as his dad, and brothers did - they were all naturals. With that said, it’s no surprise that Jay Graydon was the bass player in his brother Dan’s band. As it pans out, Jay soon encouraged Marty to study music in college and he took the advice. This led to a series of events that would have Walsh playing sessions with Graydon, Seals and Crofts and Yvonne Elliman. In the early ’80s, he found himself on the hits “9 to5” by Dolly Parton, “She Works Hard for the Money” by Donna Summer and “Heartlight” by Neil Diamond. In ‘85, he played guitar on Supertramps’ “Brother Where You Bound” and then toured with the band until1988, when they released “Free As A Bird.” He’s a veteran musician who still continues to gig and is faculty member at The Berklee College of Music in Boston – an impressive way to give back to new, emerging talent. And he recently released his debut solo CD titled “The Total Plan.” Inside MusiCast welcomes Marty Walsh.
