Rosemary Gladstar was the very first person I interviewed for this podcast nearly four years ago, and it was truly an honor to be able to have her on the show again. She is such a presence in the world, having brought so much love and wisdom to the herbal community for decades. Rosemary's work has inspired many thousands (at least!) of budding and experienced herbalists, and I am so incredibly grateful for every moment I get to spend with her.Rosemary discussed a variety of topics in this interview, but there was one major thread that wove its way through our conversation: the beauty and power of diversity, whether that's diversity in an ecosystem, in a group of people, or even in the thoughts and ideas that guide us on our journey through the world. She shared about many of the people, places, and plants that have influenced her path, and how sometimes the most challenging of situations have often been her biggest teachers.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► What inspired Rosemary to write her new book, The Generosity of Plants – and why she continues to be inspired by its contents► Why Rosemary finds such value in being challenged by different viewpoints► How the art of herbal formulation can be used as a model for community and collaboration among people► Why connection, relationship, love, and adventure make such strong medicine► and so much more…For those of you who don't know her, Rosemary Gladstar has been practicing, living, learning, teaching and writing about herbs for over 45 years. Our hope is for this show to be entertaining and fun – and maybe we'll learn a little something along the way too.  There may be no better person that embodies the vision of “Plant Stories” like herbal troubadour and Appalachian naturalist, Doug Elliot. A gifted storyteller, Doug recites both wisdom and whimsical through spoken word and song. We've compiled some of our favorite songs that Doug has recorded with us and are releasing them together, in this delightful and heart-warming episode. Our host, Thomas, gives a brief introduction in between Doug's sets, offering context for each of the four botanical tales & tunes.  Today's episode also comes with a special visual bonus! For many years made his living as a traveling herbalist, gathering and selling herbs, teas, and remedies. He has spent a great deal of time with traditional country folk and indigenous people, learning their stories, folklore and traditional ways of relating to the natural world. In recent years he has performed and presented programs at festivals, museums, botanical gardens, nature centers and schools from Canada to the Caribbean. He has been a featured storyteller at the National Storytelling Festival. He has lectured and performed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and conducted workshops for the Smithsonian Institution. He has led ranger training sessions for the National Park Service and guided people on wilderness experiences from down-east Maine to the Florida Everglades. He was named harmonica champion at Fiddler's Grove Festival in Union Grove, N.C. He is the author of five books, many articles in regional and national magazines, has recorded a number of award winning albums of stories and songs, and is occasionally seen on PBS-TV, and the History and National Geographic Channels. In recent years, he has received a variety of honors. The National Storytelling Network (the largest storytelling membership organization in the world) inducted him into their Circle of Excellence for “exceptional commitment and exemplary contribution to the art of storytelling.” The International Herb Association presented him with the Otto Richter Award honoring his work with herbs and useful wild plants. The National Association for Interpretation (the professional organization of park rangers, naturalists, museum curators, etc.) gave him the Master Front Line Interpreter Award for his “mastery of interpretive techniques, program development, and design of creative projects” celebrating the natural world and our human connection to nature.  Elliot's passion for the natural world developed in early childhood roaming the woods and waters around his home. His dad used to say, “That boy knows what's under every rock between here and town.” He still roams the woods today. He has traveled from the Canadian North to the Central American jungles studying plant and animal life and seeking out the traditional wisdom of people with intimate connections to the natural world. And he still looks under rocks. These days he uncovers more than just a few strange critters; he brings to light the human connection to this vibrant world of which we are a part. We'll explore how roses, linden blossoms, mugwort/cronewort, Grandmother cedar and other plant allies taken as teas, tinctures, or infusions, and enjoyed in anointing oils, ointments, smokes and baths – help open our “third eye”, guide our dreams and trance journeys, help us create safe and sacred space, and evoke healing visions in meditation, ritual, and ceremony. We are resurrecting the Western System of Energetics where the language fits our culture. Working from the six tissue states and teachings of the physiomedicalists, this system is both intuitive and clinically accurate.  To observe patterns of disease we need to observe patterns in nature first to grasp harmonies and disharmonies. Winds that dry, waters that swell, heat that rises, cold that depresses are all vital expressions of nature that play out in our organs, joints, muscles, thoughts and spirit.  This is the practice of traditional folk herbalism where nature is observed and the inherent self-regulating systems of the body are acknowledged and supported. Throughout the Renaissance Era of medicine, it was standard practice for not only herbalists, but university trained physicians to utilize medicine astrology in their diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. As science desacralized ancient traditions, the usage of astrology for medical purposes has diminished into obscurity. The 5 Keys for Using Herbs Holistically

In the modern world of herbalism, strongly influenced by information from Google and the phytopharmaceutical and supplement industries, there is an increasing lack of traditional knowledge in the common mindset and usage of plant medicines. This had led to an allopathic approach to herbalism and "holistic amnesia," where we treat plants like drugs and not sentient beings.  Ultimately, plants cannot be used like drugs and if they are approached and such they will not work! This lecture from the 2017 International Herb Symposium outlines 5 keys for how to understand and use herbs in a truly holistic fashion. This isn't focused on what herbs are "good for," but rather who they are as intelligent forces of nature. By learning these 5 keys, everything about a plant is understood within a holistic context so you learn each remedy with more depth and precision.  ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ ———————————— ABOUT SAJAH ———————————— Sajah Popham, founder of Organic Unity and The School of Evolutionary Herbalism, is committed to creating a new paradigm of plant medicine anchored in herbal, medical, and spiritual traditions from around the world.
