Lacrosse is more than just a sport; it's a mirror — one that reflects the history, tensions, and contradictions of America itself. So posits acclaimed sports journalist/renowned Sports Illustrated Senior Writer S.L. Price on this week's episode, as we explore his impressive new book "The American Game: History and Hope in the Country of Lacrosse" — a sweeping chronicle of the Indigenous origins, elite entrenchment, and modern upheaval of America's truest "oldest sport.” From its sacred beginnings among the Native American (and First Nations) Haudenosaune — where the “Creator's Game” served as both spiritual expression and a form of conflict resolution — to its adoption and reshaping by white elites in Ivy League corridors, lacrosse has long occupied a complicated cultural space. Price brings us inside this uniquely American paradox: a sport that's simultaneously expanding at lightning speed, yet reckoning with the deep scars of exclusion, privilege, and violence. We dive into lacrosse's turbulent professional history, including the shaky rise and fall of multiple pro leagues, the game's fraught image in the wake of high-profile scandals, and the symbolic power of the Iroquois Nationals playing as a sovereign team on the world stage. Along the way, Price shares stories of legendary figures like Jim Brown, Kyle Harrison, Lyle Thompson, and Oren Lyons — voices who have reshaped what lacrosse means, and who it belongs to. This isn't just a conversation about sports — it's about race, class, identity, and what it means to belong in America. If you think you know lacrosse, think again. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/good-seats-still-avalable?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Old Fort Baseball Co. We are taking a short break over the holidays and are rebroadcasting some memorable discussions. This episode was originally published January 12, 2021. The Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse team are ranked as one of the top teams in the world, but were passed over for the upcoming World Games likely in part due to their fight for sovereignty. This slight inspired an act of sportsmanship that has helped bring two nations closer together. Rex Lyons is a former player and board member of the Iroquois Nationals, and he joins “This Matters” to explain this remarkable sports story.
A day after the IOC granted full recognition to World Lacrosse in advance of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, CEO Jim Scherr joins IL's Terry Foy to discuss what it means for the sport, what the next steps are, how Sixes fits in and the Iroquois Nationals' path to being a part of a potential future Olympic Games.
For several decades the male dominated power structure in Onondaga has tried to keep Haudenosaunee women out of lacrosse in order to maintain their dominance over the Iroquois Nationals men's lacrosse team. After facing pressure from lucrative sponsors and outside organizations to merge the two teams under one banner, a delegation from the men's team spoke to the Grand Council of Six Nations at an unusual closed-door session and the women's team was disbanded without justification shortly after. The women were not given an opportunity to defend themselves and their team's sanction was pulled by the Grand Council which made it impossible for them to compete at the international level. In this episode, John is joined by Katie Smith, Erin Francis and Kathy Smith to peel back the curtain on the inner-workings of Haudenosaunee politics and to discuss these troubling developments. →→→→ Like what you hear? Lyle is the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer and someone universally regarded as one of the best lacrosse players in the world. (Member of the: Iroquois Nationals, Chesapeake and Georgia Swarm). Despite his well-deserved accolades and his love of the sport, so too is the love of his culture and heritage.

Nick mourns Notre Dame's CFP performance (they covered!) and attempts to rationalize it away while Evan returns from vacation and reveals the best burger you've most likely never had and probably never will. (19:16) Onondaga CC legend, former Syracuse stud, MLL Champion, NLL Champion, and very soon to be PLL standout Randy Staats sits down with us. Randy gives us some info on the amazing work he is doing with Turtle Island (http://turtleislandlax.com/), growing up and playing lacrosse on the reserve, his time at Hill Academy and scoring 1 million points at OCC while only playing one half per game. Randy and Evan recap their time at Syracuse and compare OCC nightlife to Cuse and Notre Dame nightlife. Nick and Randy look back on their NLL encounters (scouting report: "take Ossello to the rack") and discuss Randy joining the PLL. Cam Bomberry - Season 2Cam began playing lacrosse when he was just three years old. He worked his way through the Six Nation’s minor league box lacrosse program and began playing for St. Catherine’s Junior A team when he was 15. He finished his junior career with the Six Nations Arrows and won the Minto Cup in 1992 and was captain of the first Indigenous based franchise to win a Minto Cup and won the Jim McConaghy MVP Trophy. The three-time All-American played NCAA lacrosse with Nazareth College from 1990 to 1994 in Rochester, New York, where he helped his team claim an NCAA championship title in 1992.On top of his minor league and college achievements, Cam was able to play professionally for eight seasons in the NLL with the Buffalo Bandits, the Rochester Knighthawks, and the New Jersey Storm. On the Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) circuit, he participated in three Mann Cup titles with the Six Nations Chiefs. His experience also stretches onto a number of national teams. He played for the U19 Canadian Men’s Field Lacrosse Team in 1988, and was a four-time member of Iroquois Nationals team. Cam finished his playing career in the summer of 2006 at the World Championship in London with Team Iroquois, and continues his involvement with the sport through lectures and clinics.
The gaining popularity of lacrosse at the international level combined with the political pressure to ignore our autonomy and distinction may force the team permanently out of international competition. The successful promotion of the sport by Native leaders and the push to have it included in the Olympics may sideline the team representing the sport's creators. This week on the #OTCBPodcast we dip into the Inside Lacrosse pool for two great guests, Stephen Stamp and Terry Foy. Stamp is the NLL's draft Guru and knows pretty much everything there is to know about the top 100 prospects for next Thursday's NLL Draft. We all know Teat is going first overall but after that, it's anyones guess so, we'll see what Stamper has to say. Foy is the CEO of Inside Lacrosse and has been on the beat covering the Iroquois Nationals saga in relation to the 2022 World Games. In the past week we've see Team Ireland vacate their position for the Nationals as well as a few more hurdles seem to have bene cleared which will allow the torchbearers of our sport to compete at the World Games. So how did it all happen so quickly, and what does it mean for the future? We break it all down on this week's OTCBPodcast.
Ray chats to Michael Kennedy, CEO of Lacrosse Ireland and Rex Lyons of the Iroquois Nationals to find out about how only one team can play at the 2022 World Games.
Today we celebrate social justice solutions! Incarcerated firefighters can finally pursue careers in the field after release in CA and a heartwarming gesture of sportsmanship makes way for the Iroquois Nationals to claim their place in the 2022 Lacrosse World Games. Listen to The Optimist Daily Update with Summers & Kristy - Making Solutions the News!
Second Cup of Coffee - Michael Kennedy comes on and discusses Team Irelands decision to vacate their World Games spot to allow the Iroquois Nationals the opportunity.
This week on the #OTCBPodcast we continue our #NLLDraft prospect watch with projected Top5 pick Ryan Smith, and chat with newly appointed VP of Lacrosse Operations and GM of the expansion Fort Worth team Bob Hamley. Hamley has seen and done nearly all there is to do in the NLL over a 30 year career but now he gets the chance to build his very own team from the ground up, after being named VP of LaxOps and GM down in Fort Worth. He's ready to meet the task head on and knows he doesn't get a mulligan. Smith has seen his rise up the prospect list steadily grow over the last few years as his game has progressed from Jr C all the way to the NCAA and Sr A ball; now the next step in his journey is the NLL. The impressive power forward, looks to use his size, shot and mental strengths to make an immediate impact once he's done at RMU. But the biggest story of the week came out late Wednesday and that was when Team Ireland just "did the right thing", and gave up their spot in the 2022 World Games so that the Iroquois Nationals could take their rightful spot amongst the game's best. All that and more on this week's OTCBPodcast.

Lyle Thompson is arguably the best lacrosse player in the world. He plays for the Georgia Swarm in the National Lacrosse League along with his three brothers, Jeremy, Haina and Miles. Lyle is growing the game of lacrosse through his heritage and beliefs as a Native American. He has and continues to make such a big impact in and out of lacrosse that he became a Nike sponsored athlete in 2015. The other thing you may notice about Lyle is the pony tail that hangs down his back as he plays, which represents his Native Heritage. There was an incident in January this year during a game where an announcer made a remark about cutting his pony tail or “scalping” him. With an outpouring of support from fans and players around the league, this was something Lyle turned into an opportunity to educate. In September of this year Lyle will represent the Iroquois Nationals at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. In this episode we cover the origin of lacrosse, how it is a game of medicine, how the stick was created, we debunk myths of Native Americans and have some laughs about an honorary Thompson brother… which is not an easy title to receive. The Iroquois Nationals took the Bronze Medal at the FIL Men's Lacrosse World Championship; an incredible feat considering our small population competing against the likes of the US and Canada. But how long can we remain the third best in the world? Ed Schindler and John Kane discuss the issue.
IL's Terry Foy and ILIndoor Editor Stephen Stamp react to the U.S. National Team's 11-10 win over Canada on Sunday and Canada's 10-5 win over the Iroquois Nationals on Monday. Additionally, Stamp talks to LaxAllStars host Josh Hawkins about his time in Israel.
The Iroquois Nationals did travel to Israel, eventually. They were held up until the 11th hour because Israel wouldn't issue travel visas without Canada recognizing the team's travel documents. Canada wouldn't budge on their view that Haudenosaunee passports are "fantasy documents." The issued a waiver for travel but that's it. Ed and I discuss this mess.
The Boys are back in town. After taking a quick hiatus after the end of the NCAA DI season, the boys are back to preview the 2018 FIL World Lacrosse Championships. The fellas hit you with everything you need to know heading into the tournament in Israel including previews of Team USA, Team Canada, the Iroquois Nationals, as well as making a few dark horse picks on teams to make some noise at the Worlds.
Ed Schindler joins John Kane for the hour. Looks like the Iroquois Nationals are heading to Israel after all. We'll know just how many players make the trip over the next few days. Ed and John discuss the on-going suppositions made about the origins of our populations in the Western Hemisphere. Bering Strait, Afrocentric, Egyptology, "Lost tribe of Israel"; lots of "theories" with very little science based evidence. While Native people are rarely obsessed with the question, there seems to be an agenda behind these "theories."

So maybe the Iroquois Nationals are not going to Israel after all. Good! That is the buzz anyway. I guess we'll see. I was asked about my thoughts on George Carlin's view on "Indians." Well, let's just say that this isn't his best work. I put to rest this whole "in dios" BS. Columbus was an ass and a terrible navigator and yes, he thought we were "Indians" in the East Indies.
The origin of lacrosse belongs to the Native American Haudenosaunee (pronounced “ho DEE no Show nee”) who the French called Iroquois. To this nation of 125,000 people it is more than a game. It is a profound medicine, part of Iroquois cosmology and their lifeblood. Gifted players like the Thompson brothers and Brett Bucktooth Junior provide a spiritual sense of what it’s like playing Lacrosse with a “good mind”. They belong to a pool of only 400 Iroquois players, whereas team Canada and USA draw from over 600,000. In 2010 England hosted the World Lacrosse Field Championship and the United Kingdom refused to accept Haudenosaunee passports denying the Iroquois Nationals their chance to compete on the world stage. They have waited four years for the next championships in Denver. Out of the 83 nations taking part in the games, the Iroquois win the bronze medal for the first time. The Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse Team is not only among the world’s best, but ambassadors for their Nation’s sovereignty and recognition. In 2015, the Iroquois hosted the World Championships on Native soil for the first time ever, in which history, politics and culture all collided on the playing field before the eyes of the world. Co-directors Peter Spirer and Peter Baxter stop by for a conversation on their nuanced documentary as well as the history, culture and spirit of the of the Haudenosaunee people.
