Send us a textDaniella (Danny) Guyette is an emerging talent in collegiate lacrosse, recognized for her agility, composure, and leadership as a goalkeeper for Syracuse University.Originally from Newbury Park, California, Guyette's lacrosse journey began at Newbury Park High School, where she was a standout player. She earned multiple accolades, including three-time All-Marmonte League First Team and All-Ventura County First Team honors. Her senior year was particularly impressive, as she posted a .590 save percentage with 130 saves in just 12 games. She was also named to US Lacrosse's Fab 50 and played in the Adrenaline All-American Senior Game.At Syracuse, Guyette has continued to develop her skills. After missing her freshman season due to injury, she made her collegiate debut in 2024, playing in seven games and recording a 7.63 goals-against average with a .524 save percentage. She made her first career save against Virginia Tech and had a season-high three saves against UAlbany.Guyette's dedication to the sport has been shaped by her admiration for past Syracuse goalies. Growing up, she studied the play styles of standout SU goalkeepers like Asa Goldstock and Delaney Sweitzer, incorporating elements of their game into her own. Now, with Sweitzer's transfer to Northwestern, Guyette is poised to take on a larger role as Syracuse's starting goalie in 2025.Off the field, Guyette is pursuing a degree in forensic science and has been recognized for her academic achievements, earning spots on the ACC Academic Honor Roll and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. The start to her Syracuse career didn't go exactly as planned as Guyette suffered a knee injury keeping her out the entire year. We talk about the process of overcoming an injury like that both mentally and physically. Her journey from a determined high school athlete to a rising collegiate star serves as an inspiration to young lacrosse players aiming to make their mark at the next level.Enjoy my conversation with outstanding Syracuse goalie Danny Guyette.Support the show

The first weekend of the 2025 season went mostly according to script. With more teams making debuts and 32 games on the slate, will this week bring the drama, upsets and stunners we all love? D-Fly and Dixie are back to get you teed up for the weekend. They'll take a big picture look at the opening weekend, recap mid-week games including Hopkins nail biter with Towson and of course look ahead to the second weekend of the regular season. While the show's regular guests will generally be the current stars of the college game, the early part of the season always affords for a variety of discussions with interesting luminaries from across the sport. This week's guest certainly fits the bill as coach Seth Tierney joins Dan and Mark to talk about his Hofstra Pride, taking the reins of the men's national team for US Lacrosse, his leadership role with the Premier Lacrosse League and much, much more. WEEKEND PREVIEW Several more teams in action this weekend for the first time, and a few Top 20 matchups to get excited about. Unfortunately, almost all the games are again jammed into a short window between noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday.  FRIDAY Vermont (0-0) at No. 2 Syracuse (1-0), 6 p.m. SATURDAY No. 13 Army at UMass, noon No. 15 Michigan (1-0) at No. 16 North Carolina, noon No. 10 Georgetown (1-0) at No. 8 Johns Hopkins (2-0), 1 p.m. No. 4 Maryland (1-0) at Loyola (0-1), 1 p.m. SUNDAY No. 12 Penn State (1-0) at Villanova, noon MONDAY No. 17 Towson (0-1) at No. 2 Syracuse (1-0), 5 p.m. In this week's Super Bowl-themed Give & Go, the guys discuss their (surprising lack of) enthusiasm for this year's Big Game.

61. Dr. Brett Owens: MCL Injuries - Part I

On today's episode we're focusing on medial collateral ligament injuries with Dr. Brett Owens. We'll start off our discussion today with an article authored by our guest, Dr. Brett Owens, titled “The Epidemiology of Medial Collateral Ligament Sprains in Young Athletes” from the 2014 issue of AJSM.The authors performed a longitudinal cohort study of US military cadets and found that MCL injuries are relatively common in the athletic population. Male athletes are at significantly greater risk than females –of the 128 injuries in this study, 89% occurred in males. Intercollegiate athletes are also at greater risk than athletes participating in intramural sports. The incidence of MCL injury was highest in wrestling and hockey. In terms of time missed, the average amount of time was 23 days but this differed based on the grade of injury – with grade I sprains only missing a median of 13.5 days.Up next is a Current Concepts Review article from JBJS authored by Robert LaPrade and colleagues at the University of Minnesota. Some takeaways from this paper: First, the medial structures of the knee (including the superficial and deep MCL as well as the posterior oblique ligament) are the most commonly injured ligamentous structures of the knee. The majority of medial knee ligament tears are isolated injuries. Physical examination is the initial method of choice for diagnosis and includes application of a valgus load to the knee in both full extension as well as in 20 to 30 degrees of knee flexion. In terms of imaging, valgus stress radiographs and MRI are useful to confirm and grade the injury. We wrap up Part I with a discussion on the prevention of MCL injury and review an article from the August issue of OJSM this year titled “Prophylactic Knee Bracing in Offensive Lineman of the NFL – A Retrospective Analysis of Usage Trends, Player Performance and Major Knee Injury.” Dr. Robert Gallo and team at Penn State found that brace wears had a significantly lower rate of major knee injury, defined as an injury requiring time missed. The most common knee injury in nonbracers was an isolated MCL injury. There was no difference in player performance between bracers and nonbracers. Interestingly, despite this data, brace usage has steadily declined – from 16.3% in 2014 to 5.6% in 2020 – specifically at the rookie level. We are joined today by Dr. Brett Owens, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at University Orthopaedics in Providence Rhode Island, who specializes in complex shoulder, knee and sports medicine. He is the Chief of Sports Medicine at the Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI and the Director of the Rhode Island Cartilage Repair Center. He is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brown University Alpert Medical School and is currently a Team Physician for Brown University and the Providence Bruins. Prior to joining University Orthopaedics, Dr. Owens served as the Chief of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Keller Army Hospital at West Point New York, where he cared for soldiers and cadets at the US Military Academy and was the Team Physician for Army lacrosse, rugby, and football teams. While deployed in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Dr. Owens served as Chief of Orthopedics at the 86th Combat Support Hospital. He has also served as Team Physician for US Lacrosse like Catherine! Needless to say, he is a very accomplished person and we are excited to have him join us today.

Good afternoon lax fans and thank you for spending some time reading the Utah Lax Report. I'm really excited about this podcast with Mason Goodhand. Goodhand has been part of the Utah lacrosse scene from the beginning and there are some great tidbits in this episode for any level of lacrosse fan. Please give it a listen! Just a reminder, you can subscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. As a spoiler, Goodhand mentions that he was part of the Vail shootout when it was in Aspen. Inside Lacrosse & ESPN analyst Quint Kessenich wrote about the Vail lacrosse shootout ‘When Vail Was King'. It's a great read and provides a little insight into the tournament and lacrosse in the West. Goodhand was one of the first to create a ‘club/travel' team called Team Utah and the only tournament they would go to was the Vail shootout. Goodhand also mentions when Westminster beat BYU in 2015. It was the first in-state loss that BYU had ever had. You can read the recap here. I was there and it was a great game. One of my favorite lacrosse pictures I've ever taken came from that game as well. BYU attackman Mike Fabrizio loved to creep around the crease from X in this shot he did so but Westminster was up the task with Trent Herbert and Dalton Tuor defending the play. A cliched bit of advice that, in my opinion, has been overused to the point of meaninglessness. Mental toughness boils down to:Just do it, Put your head down, Find a helmet, Grind it outGrit, and perseverance are valuable virtues for any human to develop; I am not arguing against these virtues. Why do children play sports? According to a study by researchers at Notre Dame's Center for Ethical Education, it's to (#1) have fun, then—do something that are good at, improve skills, get exercise, be part of a team and enjoy the excitement of competition. But looking out at many sports fields or at many athletic events- sometimes, if we are being truthful, it looks like we are missing the mark. There are coaches screaming and parents gritting their teeth, fans yelling at referees and teammates shunning other teammates over missed goals or botched moves. What happened to the carefree freedom and fun that sports and athletic engagement once gave us? It's no wonder so many kids drop out of sports by the age of 13. And if we are really to ask ourselves how we can develop strong athletes who thrive at peak performance- do we really think this is the way? My next guest has some other ideas that can really help us. John O'Sullivan started the Changing the Game Project in 2012 after two decades as a soccer player- collegiate and professional- and a coach on the youth, high school, college and professional level.  He is the author of the #1 bestselling books Changing the Game: The Parents Guide to Raising Happy, High Performing Athletes, Giving Youth Sports Back to our Kids and Is it Wise to Specialize? John's work has been featured in The Huffington Post, CNN.com, Outside Magazine, ESPN.com, Soccer America and numerous other publications. John is an internationally known speaker for coaches, parents and youth sports organizations, and has spoken for TEDx, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, US Lacrosse, IMG Academy, and at numerous other events throughout the US, Canada, Asia and Europe. Mental toughness Practice reading situations - so your players know what to look for and don't panic when they see something new 'If you're still teaching your quarterback the day before the game, you're in trouble' Mondays through Wednesdays are work/teaching days Monday - introduction Tuesday/Wednesday - work day Thursday - the players should be teaching it back to the coach Friday (gameday)- just be there to chit-chat with the players, not teach them anything new. Ask them if they have any questions - if they do, have them try to answer their own question. Coaching up the parents Moms of football - go from a fan, to a team mom, to a coach on the field Have a teaching day - start with your coaching philosophy. Then make a one-page cheat sheet that explains the basic rules. Then take them on the field and have them try it out a bit. Practicing in a game-like environment Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent Ask who wants to take a pressure shot in practice - good way to see who might be clutch player at the end of a game Flushing routines Take your hat off, brush some water in your hair, when you put your hat back on you are starting anew Release, replan, refocus - Turn your back to the field of play, replan, then when you turn back around you are refocused Serena Williams - has notecards at her bench with 2 or 3 points of emphasis, she looks at them every time she changes sides Evaluative environment vs Expressive environment: Players don't perform well when they feel they are being evaluated every single play, they perform much better in a expressive environment Dump card - write down everything that is stressing you out - then leave it in their locker - you're not bringing that to the field with you - you can stress out about it again when you get back to your locker The Sport of School - the book 5 different types of student athletes: The workhorse The rookie The natural talent The spectator The intellectual 3 ways to be successful: Work hard Solve problems Have intellectual curiosity Book: Coming soon! Kate Leavell: I have been an NCAA lacrosse coach, a high school varsity lacrosse and strength coach, a youth and travel coach of many different sports, swimming instructor, NASM certified personal trainer and senior fitness specialist, board member, a national coaches education trainer for US Lacrosse, an eternal college student, a parent of youth and high school athletes, speaker, teacher, and apparently now after four years of blogging and nationally featured articles and a book…a writer. I'm drawn to all things motivational and figuring out what makes people reach and discover what seems impossible. After a recent shoulder surgery led to staring a pulmonary embolism in the face (or staring at it in the lungs?!) i had time to reevaluate what is important. I came to the realization that it's not an interest after all that I spread motivation around, it's in fact, a necessity. So my mission begins, one kid, one coach at a time if need be. Get the energy vampires off the bus. You are better off without them.' - Jon Gordon Coaching your own kids Have assistant coaches coach teach your kid and vice versa Stop coaching on the car ride home, leave it at the field Cringe Moment Putting your own self-worth based on a team's performance 'I know a lot about lacrosse, I don't know anything about building a culture' Big moment: meeting Jon Gordon in the airport, reading The Energy Bus - changed Kate's perspective on building culture Accelerate Deep Training Make everything fun, make everything competitive, then quit talking and just let them do it. 'Kids hear the first sentence and last sentence you say', the middle usually just goes in one ear and out the other. Good Icebreakers/games The Hug game - Call out a number, then the kids have to form a group with that number of people and put arms around each other to form a circle. Whoever doesn't end up in a circle is out. Zombie Tag - First time tagged, you lose an arm. Then you have to go out of circle, run a lap, then you're back in. Then you lose 2nd arm, then legs. So last time you have to roll out of circle b/c you have no legs. Stop playing chess with your players, put away the 'joystick', and Peak performance 'I'm a believer in belief' - The more the kids believe that you believe in them, the better their performance will be Building Culture It starts with expectations up front 3 different groups that feed into your culture: 1 - Coaches - Support one another. Do a mid-season survey to ask kids how they are doing 2 - Players - Positive self-talk 3 - Parents - Kate has an open door policy, the only restriction is that they will only talk about their kid, not other kids on the team Communication - "Drama is heavier than bricks, it always breaks through" Lessons from Jon Gordon 'Invite your team to get on the bus. Get the energy vampires off the bus. You are better off without them.' Urban Meyer 10-80-10 Principle - Quit spending energy on the energy vampires, put your energy towards your high energy people The one that got away It wasn't a tough loss - it was a team where Kate had let the culture get away from her The Positivity Experiment Kate did an experiment where she committed to only talking about what it going well, never pointing out negatives. The things they needed to work on, she would just add them to the practice plan instead of pointing them out. 'I let go of being focused on winning, which freed me up to enjoy coaching and took the pressure off the outcome of the game'
